Acer V7-482PG, Dell Inspiron 14 7000, both are maybe a little over 800

For the RAM it is DDR3L-1600Mhz

Man I was really hoping to have a new computer by now so I could buy a SSD during Black Friday deals. I suppose I could just grab one and, if it doesn't fit whichever laptop I end up getting, sell the SSD on eBay.

Is it possible to upgrade the cpu?

The manual has these cpus listed but there are also different MBs listed so not sure if it boots even if the TDP is the same...

Man, I was all set to buy the Acer V7, but it comes to 909 after tax. 850$ was my MAXIMUM limit. So looks like I'll be getting the U430, which comes to 720$ after tax, and a 8gb stick for 75$.

    Thanks for your help!

If you live in the US, Lenovo Outlet frequently dumps u430 laptops in scratch and dent condition for $408 plus tax, and also, you can get the micron 8gb stick (model MT16KTF1G64HZ-1G6E1 which is supported as per the manual) from a reputable seller in ebay for $64-65.

If you're still looking, TigerDirect has the Acer V7 for under $850 as long as you don't live in one of the states that they charge sales tax:

I snagged a brand new u430 on the lenovo outlet site for $507. I was waiting to buy this laptop. I had tested it in Best Buy and couldn't find any deal on this until I noticed it on the Lenovo outlet. Previously it had sold out almost immediately. I waited patiently and was finally able to get one.
Love it. Upgraded it to 8.1. Everything is working fine.

Where can we find the U430 with the HD+ 900p screen that is available to get right now?? The U430 is only 768p on the US Lenovo website.

For me the U430 is the quietest notebook I ever had. Probably also the one with the least power inside, but fear not for everyday use it has enough power (i7-4500u)

    Nice to know,thanks...
Do you know if its same on u330 touch?
Im getting i3 version with 1080p touch screen and hopefully i will be happy with it :)
    Some work,browsing,1080p youtube etc :)

Now i have Lenovo Z500 with I5 and gt645 and its not exactly quiet but nothing super noisy...
According to notebookcheck U330p is more quiet by 1-2 decibels in iddle mode and 4-5 decibels in load.

Im still not 100% sure if i get u330 or 430 because they are pretty simmilar in size and weight...What is biggest difference?

    13inch with 1080p vs 14inch with 900p
Rest is same from my pov.

Ok thanks for info, one probably last question...
I understand that fan is quiet when you doing some word writing or one internet tab etc...

1.but if you have lets say 5 tabs in chrome and one 1080p video on youtube...How noisy is your laptop then?
2.Also is i3 with intel hd capable of that without lagging?

There is usualy no other sound in my room when i have my tv off, so i hope its quiet :)

    Hello.
I just received my brand new Lenovo u430 and i want to ask, is this normal that my display is moving that much ? It looks like the hinges are not firm enought. The display is not just bouncing like when the hinges are fixed, it feels like the hinges are not screwed enought or something. None of my laptops has this problem before. I havent started it yet, should i reclaim it ? Here is the video i made:

Looks a bit loose indeed. My 'used' one is much firmer and only has a little wobble which I think is acceptable.

I second that opinion. I had a U430 for like a day, and returned it due to a touchpad being defective, but my screen did not wobble like that( it was actually very firm).

Hi everyone i am about to buy a U430 from amazon, (technical spec below)
    just a few quick questions before i do so;

-I will use it for some matlab calculations, movies and online tv streaming
at the moment i have an old u450p which gets hot constantly
is this an issue for this laptop as well?

-- i will buy it from german amazon, but i live in belgium. so i really dont want to bother sending it back or excahging it due to a problem etc
is there any way to make sure this wont happen or is it just luck and i will see once i open the box?

    Lenovo IdeaPad U430touch 35,6 cm (14 Zoll FHD LED MULTI-TOUCH) Ultrabook (Intel Core i7 4500U, 3GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GT 730M / 2 GB, Win 8) grau

For me the heat is not an issue. Just yesterday my notebook went on (from standby) inside the neoprene cover, inside my backpack. It drained +- 60% battery so it was on for hours. CPU and Motherboard were 54C and dropped quickly when I let it cool down a bit on the table. So heat is not an issue in my opinion.
This would have fried my old notebook. :p

The U430 has so much promise but Lenovo continues to get worse every year. The weak WiFi hardware problems are legendary in the U3xx and U4xx series, but generation after generation, they've yet to fix them. This review suggests not buying the U430 because the WiFi is so bad (his Android phone has a faster connection):

lenovo ideapad u430 touch (14") quick review - YouTube

And then Lenovo is completely random with what configurations are offered in various countries, at various times, through various dealer channels. A lot of the models offered as review samples appear not be available anywhere from anyone. Here in the USA you can get one model at BestBuy and two essentially identical lower spec models direct from Lenovo (both with lo-res screens). That's it.

There have been numerous reports of serious build quality issue as well including floppy screen hinges, broken touchpads, defective keyboards, and motherboards that lock up. There are well documented issues with Win 8.1 and various drivers, especially Bluetooth, with no updates available from Lenovo. They just seem not to care.

It's great the system is easily opened to replace the drive, upgrade RAM, and replace the battery. But it's sucks Lenovo has decided that completely voids the warranty. At least Dell, HP, and others not only let you open their laptops, they even give you detailed instructions on how to do it.

I'm surprised nobody has noticed, but even the U430 CPU temps appear not to be reported correctly. Reviews have measured higher temps on the outside of the chassis than the CPU internal temp when the system is under max load. That's just about impossible. So I have to wonder if the CPU was running too hot and Lenovo found a way to disguise the truth?

Sorry, for the rant, but perhaps someone at Lenovo follows these forums and might actually care that Lenovo just needs to fix a few things that shouldn't be that hard to fix to have a great ultrabook for the price. As it is now, it's hard to overlook everything above.

I got a new u430 touch. Everything seems great except the display. I get the feeling that the colors are washed out and no black levels. Tried a simple test Black level - Lagom LCD test

Unable to see the first 5 black squares. Poor contrast. These are visible in my 5 yr old dell vostro. Is a dull display and lack of vivid colors on u430 normal? Pretty disappointed since display colors are very important for me. Surprised how even a latest display is not vivid. Can someone advise what my options are? Does only U430 suffer from this problem? Are there any calibrations that can fix this to some extent? Are there any lenovo laptops with good display under $600

this seems like a great notebook for the price since my alienware just died on me :(. I've been searching around and 99% of them say intel hd 4400 and I really wanted that integrated nvidia 730m. Anyone know the deal on this??

A friend of mine bought one of these and is having an absolutely terrible time trying to keep a stable Wifi connection (mentioned it here as well). Basically, it's constantly dropping her to a limited connection.

Anyone else having the same or similar issues? Is there any foolproof fix? We've tried updating Wifi drivers and also changed some advanced driver settings as recommended in the other thread, and so I'm pretty stumped myself.

i7 ULV is not a quad, so you are paying 220$ for like 10-15% more CPU performance, something you won't notice in your day-to-day tasks. I'd just spend extra on a SSD.

Right.. I just bought the Best Buy model last night. Coming from a 2010 VAIO S1, I'm a bit surprised the U430's keyboard backlight has to be turned on manually. Not a big deal though

I'm going to buy this machine tomorrow..
    I can choose between the
    i7 4500U / 730 GPU / 256GB SSD / 8GB
    and the
    i5 4200U / 730 GPU / 256GB SSD / 8GB
    .
I've read the good Notebookcheck review about the i5. But I was thinking more on the i7.
    .
    Will the difference worth it?
    .
I will not play games often.
I usually surf the Internet and work in IT so my main problem until today was the browser.
    .
With Firefox (so just one instance/thread) and his 300/400 tabs circa.
The major part will be unloaded but I can have anyway an average number of 20/40 tabs loaded as basis.
So a LOT OF Javascript (ADs, auto-refreshing related contents, bad optimized scripts, that heavy beast of Facebook, the browser rendering engine itself) and Flash (Youtube, ADs -again-, etc..)
The old Tx2 was shuttering SO MUCH with his AMD Turion X2 (poor 2.3Ghz dual core).
So my main needing would be to have enough CPU power to manage my heavy multitasking surfing. Will the i7 make a difference on the i5?
    .
I'm worried just about two things:
    .
    - Will the i7 get too much hot?
I've just lost my old HP tx2 cause of the de-soldering of the graphic chip (cause of the hard/hot continuous CPU work with the browsers).
I don't want it to happen again.
Will the Haswell ULV be enough powerful to manage it and at the same time stay cool and safe?
I imagine with that CPU load it will be constantly on Turbo Boost...
From the review the i5 will be able to reach the full Turbo Boost thank to the good cooling. Will the i7 do (H)as well(^_^) ?
    .
    - There would be any fix of I encounter problems with the wifi?

I picked up the best buy model yesterday for 699. Still trying to decide if i like this keyboard and will it be comfortable to use. The right shift, enter, and backspace buttons are a little small. Some key strokes don't seem to register the first time, there is little travel on the buttons. The screen as some of you have said, is washed out and has low contrast. This is my first laptop with a clickpad and it's taking some getting used to. At least the clickable actions don't require great force to engage like some of the others I have tried such as the Toshiba 14" Satellite. Some questions for you guys:

How do I turn on the backlit keyboard?
Does this clickpad have a two finger tap (not click) motion for use as the right button action? The Toshiba does and I thought these pads were all made by Synaptics.
Any recommendations for how to tweak the screen?

Thanks very much - ask me any questions you may have about this machine and I'll do my best to answer.

    Eric

Backlight = fn + spacebar. For the different trackpad moves see the options under the synaptic preferences.

I don't know how would it cost here in europe. The machine is not bad, but I would suggest you a model with a deidcated graphic card (as in the review from Notebookcheck).

The touchpad is not so good, or maybe I have to become usual to that..
The keyboard is ok. It has some annoyance cause of the position of the function keys (the "Close program" button between the "Volume UP" and the "Refresh page" buttons.... ). The size of the button is ok; no probem if you are usual to a lot of typing.
The screen luminance is not so bad (didn't try outside).

For the two-finger-tap I found just the option to have a right-click for a click with two-fingers. Nothing about tap.
It should be just about the software. Another version of the Synaptic software could have that option.

Regarding my questions I'm actually satisfied from the performances (I took the i7 in the end) and that is not becaming hot (but I didn't do any stress test)

Sometimes some strange thing with the wifi but it's working fine generally. Just once it stopped working and I had to use the Windows tools for Diagnosis and Restore of the device.... so strange.

Anyway, a good machine in the end.

Just charge it until it's full. Should not take more than a couple hours.

How fast is this ultrabook? I'm looking to buy it maybe and this is what I'll do with it: Casual light/gaming (free-to-downloads like MapleStory and LostSaga), watching a lot of videos (YouTube and anime on anilinkz.com), web-browsing, school work, social media. It only has a 4gb ram, Hybrid 500GB 5400RPM + 8GB SSHD memory, 4th Generation Intel® Core i7-4500U (1.8 GHz 200 MHz 4MB), windows 8.1 64bit. Would this ultrabook be fast enough to fit my needs, or should I look for a better laptop?

The U430 is perfectly capable to do that kind of work. Although I would prefer an all SSD version. And keep in mind that the screen is not the best. During my school time I've always opted for a matte screen.

Just wondering if you got this figured out? Looking for a laptop for my wife, and color accuracy is probably the most important thing for her. This laptop seems pretty perfect otherwise, so I'm just wondering if this is an isolated incident, or a widespread problem?

I also saw earlier in the thread people saying there was supposed to be a higher (1080) resolution, and that screen was likely to be of better overall quality...but I'm not seeing a higher resolution screen on any of the sites that have the u430, was it ever released?

    Hello!
    I have found Lenovo U430p with i5 4258u, HD5100 (Iris) and 1080p display. I have 2 questions.
    1) I cannot find the type of the panel. Is it IPS or TN? How is the quality of this FHD panel?
    2) How is the battery life of i5 4258u in comparsion to i5 4200u?

    Thank you

    Bohumir

My first post on this forum . I read through this thread with much interest. Before coming across this forum and thread I had purchased a new Levono u430 touch almost a month ago. I did a little research and found that this Ultrabook is a good bang for the buck. My eight year old Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV650 laptop finally gave up the ghost a month ago and I needed a new computer. This most I really wanted to spend was about $700 plus or minus. The price of the u430 touch was in the ballpark on Amazon. The specs was good from what I gathered and overall feedback was good. When I received it, this computer did meet my expectations. The monitor was a bit washed out color wise but still it was not a deal breaker. The TouchPad was a okay and I guess I just have to get used to it. Overall, it is a great computer with the performance and quality I wanted in an Ultrabook for the price I paid for it.

Just ordered an 8 gig RAM stick made by Crucial. I'm planning to install it tonight. Also will invest on a Crucial 1 TB SSD later just to have the extra speed and space. Had this ultrabook for over a month now and I'm loving it!

I installed the 8 gig RAM stick last night and all is well. Those little screws that secure the cover are so tiny! Now I'm planning on buying a Crucial SSD and I'm good to go.

I'm planning to do a full install of Windows 8.1 and was wondering there are any issues with getting the drivers for this ultrabook?
