If it wouldn't be Acer, I started considering this one with i7-620M http://skinflint.co.uk/eu/a502806.html. But it's Acer. And I would order it wíth HD 5650 graphics. Any news about Y560 availability?
BTW: Sheva24 was right. Still can't understand why Lenovo hasn't already offered new ideapads to ordinary e-shops, not only Amazon, but also other mainly in Europe.

so i just got a y460.. was wondering if there are any softwares out there to oc the cpu. the i5 540 i have looks like it has lots of oc potential since it idles at around 30 degrees and maxes out at 45 when on full load.
managed to do some ocing for the 5650 using amd gpu tool.
dled evga eleet 1.065 but it doesnt seem to work with the i5 cpus. anyone know a tool that works? -
The notebooks that i'm holding out for are the Y560 with the rapid drive option rumored to come out later in April or a decent coupon for the current Y560 avaliable now.
I'm also interested to see how the newly announced Acer Ethos and Timeline notebooks will perform. Info here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/lapto...Acer-Aspire-Ethos-and-TimelineX---Hands-on/p1
Finally there are rumors of a new HP Envy 14 comming out as well.
So, lots of options if you can stand for the waiting. A good time to be in the market for a new notebook though. -

Just as an update, my IdeaPad Y460 is still working fine, and I think that, although it has some faults, it is one of the best 14-inchers around. I haven't had any major issues with heat, just in case anybody is worried about that.
-
I think sometimes its easy to forget that no desktop or laptop is perfect. In the end, what makes me happy is feeling like my money was well invested and the unit meets my needs.
I can't wait for my i7 Y560 to ship (slated for 4/20)! -
Review of the Acter Timeline 4820TG 14" notebook up.

More info in the Acer forums. Long story short, the ATI 5650HD was overclocked to a 5730HD and it was hitting 79C.
Not too shabby... -
Hey everyone, just bought a Y460 today in Singapore for
$1699 (around $1200 US). Got the higher end one (there were two on sale) with 4 gigs of ram and the i5 520. Not the cheapest but you can't get it in Australia yet... Jumped straight on a plane back to Aus and have just been using it for the last hour or so on my lap in bed with no heat issues... The bottom of the laptop is warm but by no means uncomfortable. This is just surfing the net and playing a few youtube clips on intel graphics. Not sure what everyone's ing about the heat for? If you don't want to burn your balls, don't stress test the notebook on your lap... not too difficult -
-
Sure, but the testing I've seen of the Acer TimelineX models suggests they've done a better job with the tradeoff than Lenovo has.
-
Was about to do some undervolting but failed to find a compatible program for the i5. Some mentioned cpugenie but I don't have it. Oh well. Guess I'll wait, but I think I'll be waiting for a while seeing as rmclock hasn't been updated in a while. Anyone have any info on a compatible program I'd greatly appreciate it.
-
How quickly does everyone anticipate Lenovo dropping the prices on the (RapidDrive-less) Y460's? If the base model is currently going for $700 with coupon, might we see $600 sometime in the next few months? Especially with competition on the way from the Envy 14, new Timeline series, etc.?
-
Anyone get the Y560?
The anticipation in this thread for the Y460/Y560s died down after they were released. You would figure there would be more noise if Lenovo hit one out of the park with the new models.
Lenovo needs to refresh this series with RapidDrive options, improved i5 CPU selections for the Y560 and more aggressive cooling solutions before the competitions offerings overshadow their lineup again. -
-
I'd like most to see an Y560 with i7 620M with switchable GPU for price between current i5 430M and i7 720QM version, but also the same price as quad core i7 would be acceptable. Or at least i5 520M/540M, but don't expect Lenovo to change anything on their configurations, sadly.

What laptop are you looking at now? -
I suppose one of your tradeoffs is having a burnt out y460 after a lengthy period of testing.
Read that persons post of 95*C after gaming. that's close to 203*F.
-
Yes, Lenovo charges a 15% restocking fee if the laptop packaging is UNOPENED.
If opened, you may only return it for a replacement.
Sad, considering that HP allows you 21 calendar days to return a laptop with NO QUESTIONS ASKED....
-
I've had my ZM-NC2000 now for I'd say a week and haven't seen any noticeable drops in temps whether idle or full load (both cpu and gpu @ 100% using prime95 and Furmark). If there is a difference I'd say 0-4ºC. I think I went into this one with too high of expectations after reading all the reviews both here and where I bought it from. I think I got similar results by just propping the back up an inch or 2.
-
-
I payed no restocking fee because they deemed it defective. I ordered a HP Envy 15 with a i5-520. Can't wait to get it!!!
-
Don't know why we have to keep going back here but okay...
List of defects people complain about on this forum with Y460
- Runs hot.
List of defects people complain about on this forum with the HP Envy 15 Gen 2:
- High pitch noise coming from front.
- Blank Screen of Death
- Purple tint on webcam
- i7 model runs hot; people opting for i5
- Build quality issues like warped cases, scratches out the box, loose keys, etc.
What can we take from this?
Nothing is perfect.
Don't dodge a bicycle to get hit by a car.
Be informed when someone discounts a "newly redesigned" item first by $300 and then soon after by $450 and it is not your birthday.
If your product has many issues you better be generous with your return policy.
I should have taken the high road but I have never smoked in Denver. -
my y460 runs hotter than id like but ive never seen my processor go above 70. its only the gfx card that hits 83 after playing battlefield badcompany 2 for about 30 mins.
i realised that the drivers do not allow the ati graphics to downclock to 2d clocks hence staying at 400 core 800 memory all the time, increasing idle temps by alot. -
epical
By the list of the laptop you have recently, I deem that you are a picky person -
In comparison, the Envy 15 has been out for months and it's on the 2nd generation. There have been hundreds of people who have gotten one and posted. It's well known now that it's short comings are.
Finally, HP has the better return policy since they don't charge a 15% restocking fee if you change your mind and return the notebook. Lenovo does unfortunately. -
Lenovo is offering new coupon codes on the Y460 and Y560 models! If you have been thinking about pulling the trigger, nows a great time to do so. Check out the sale here:
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/na/LenovoPortal/en_US/special-offers.workflow:ShowPromo?LandingPage=/All/US/Landing_pages/Promos/IdeaPad/weekly-sale&ipromoID=hpb00631& -
I saw the coupon yesterday I couldn't believe it. My Lenovo Y560 with the i5 ships nexts week but I was tempted to cancel my order and get the one with the i7.
Maybe what I will do is change the HDD (I am still thinking this because warranty, which I don't wan't to loose). Mine will come with a 500GB 5400RPM and I am thinking in getting a HDD with 7200RPM, but I am not sure what to buy. I have seen in newegg two HDD of 320GB: Western Digital Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" and HITACHI Travelstar 7K320 HTS723232L9A360 (0A57547) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5".
What should I do, change the HDD or stay with the one that comes with the Y560 (500GB 5400RPM)? If you believe I should change it, what HDD do you recommend? Thanks for your help. -
The coupon is nice, but I'd rather have an upgraded i5 CPU with switchable graphics.
guandra, have you considered getting a SSD instead? If you want performance over storage capacity getting a SSD is the best way to speed up a system. -
Rustican, I actually never thought on a SSD hard drive, mainly because of the price. I do need atleast 250GB and with that capacity, a HDD with 7200 RPM is probably a better choice (considering the price). But I am not really an expert in this, so I will take any recommendations. Thanks for your help.
-
The Y460 will probably have similar pros and cons to the Y450. The same goes for the Y560.
I only posted that list in retaliation to what seemed to me as Y460 bashing and Envy promoting. Let us stress test an Envy and see what temps we will get.
I mean it is really crazy to point out Y460 issues and turn around and buy an Envy. That thing has too many QC issues and you feel good if yours has none of the flaws people are reporting. -
The new coupon code makes the Y460 even more tempting. I can't decide if I want to jump on this now or wait for an update of the Asus u30JC with an i5 proc or the release of the Asus U33. Also there are rumors of a new UL30 with a non-culv proc that would come out sooner than the UL30JT.
So many decisions, I really have no idea what to get. -
Just got my y460 about an hour ago. Seems well made(not as well as the Thinkpads) but the keyboard lets it down. It has a lot of flex and in general feels mushy. The screen is so much nicer than my t61, it is literally twice as bright. As far a heat so far, it seems on par with everyone else. I haven't done any gaming or video processing yet, but the temps were around 40c to 50c under web browsing and installing software. The one huge complaint so far is all the crap software they put on here. There are about a dozen free trail crap programs on here. But that aside the $896 i payed for it seems like a good choice. We'll see just how the heat treats it and if it holds together like the Thinkpads.

I was also thinking of replacing my HDD on my y460 for a 7200 one but the stock 5400 500GB drive has been holding it's own quite nicely. Just ran a quick HD Tune while under "Super Energy Saver" mode (don't think this matters though but thought I'd throw it out there).
Minimum: 28.5
Maximum: 79.1
Average: 60.3
Access time: 19.2
Burst rate: 69.8
CPU usage: -1.0%
I found a site that had some HDTune results for the scorpio black 320GB 7200rpm. Here's what they came out with
Min:38.3
Max: 76.7
Average: 61.1
I think I'll just save my money until I have enough for a nice SSD, especially since I think IMO it's moving along quite nicely. -
What is it with companies giving nice machines these terrible 1366x768 res with no upgrade option?
-
Sorry, I meant "in my y460" and not y450 in my previous post about the HDD. I edited it to not cause any confusion.
-
Modern 5400RPM drives, especially the ones with higher platter densities, have almost as fast data transfer speeds as 7200RPM drives. The main advantage that 7200RPM drives have is their faster access time. The downside of 7200RPM drives is that, in general, they are louder and consume more power (although that's not always the case). So, if your 500GB 5400RPM drive is working fine - and it sounds like it is - there's no real reason to upgrade.
-
Theoretically they also don't last as long as 5400RPM drives.

I think that my hard drive just failed on my two-week old Y460. It started making a loud ticking noise, and then there was a blue screen, and then it restarted. Time to send it to Lenovo for service...

You seem to have a lot of bad luck, computerwiz. :\

Has anyone tried playing warcraft on their Y460?
-
I have played WoW, Crysis/Warhead, Starcraft II, Dragon Age Origins, Borderlands, Dead Space, and assorted smaller games like World of Goo and Plants vs Zombies on my y460. All have played very nicely some on medium settings and the rest on high.
-
I'm playing StarCraft 2 Beta on my Y460 on maxed out graphics settings. It's running great. Lord of the Rings Online also works fine. Dragon Age Origins on max settings looks great and I haven't run into any overheating issues while gaming so far.
