Everything is set correctly (60Hz, 32-bit color). I'm sending it back.

ANYONE with y560 please check the following.
Go to redflagdeals.com then go to forum.
TILT your monitor about 60 degrees upwards.
Do you notice flickering or shimmering or pixel "static" in the grey color areas of the forum website?
If so, Please post here and let us know.
I have this issue and am not sure if its a widespread problem or what. Is it software or hardware issue? -
does installing the newer video card driver from lenovo work better?
-
It seems like the display panel is 6-bit instead of the standard 8-bit and it's using dithering to display all colors, and the grainyness is an artifact of that.
I used CCC to adjust brightness/contrast to make it go away on some sites (MacRumors/Engadget), but then it pops up on others with slightly different colors. Out of all the components to be sub-par quality, this is a pretty bad one. Some of the original 2006 MBPs had this issue too. -
Dang is this true? Does this mean the screen is lower quality than what is used in most mainstream laptops? -
-

Its been 2 days since I ordered my Y560.
Do you guys think it's too late to be able to cancel my order? -
anyone know of any deals with the y560? Also how portable is the y560? Is it pretty thick?
-
-
Just keep it, it's just a gadget. Take a deep breath, and think about how fast these gadgets will become obsolete in a matter of months (replaced by newer and faster technology). If you ever decide to replace it, get the Y460 (it's smaller in footprint, weight, and the 1366x768 resolution is not stretched out unlike the Y560) -
-
The design is well made and pleasing to look at. The abstract shapes and some kind of glitter on the lid is very subtle which is good---not too showy or offensive. If you could return the Y560, feel free to do so and get it replaced with Y460. -
I checked out the y460 and am a bit dissapointed with the overall stats. Cache memory seems to be a bit low for me.... Ahh
more grief! Also when you say the design is pleasing.. Can it easily
be spotted out from other pc's such as a mac? -
-
Be aware that laptopmag.com reviewed the Y460 (core i5), and the new macbook pro (core i7). The Lenovo Y460 scored much better frame rates on Gaming than the MBP---look at world of warcraft and Far Cry2 fps of lenovo versus MBP and 3DMark06. It smoked the MBP. Plus, it earned a respectable score of 6,443 versus MBP's 6,669 on PcMark Vantage. The category average for that class only earns half of the score. The Y460 can keep up with even ASUS's higher end gaming laptop.
The lid is unique and stylish. The Macbooks are too common nowadays---you see them everywhere. If you want a real head-turner, type Sony X505 on youtube. It's the world's thinnest laptop. It may not have the modern capabilities of today's computer but everytime I take it with me, people starts asking questions. -
hey can anyone do y560 review?game benchmark, pics, temperature, noisy and video(during crysis,codmw2,bf2,re5 etc).i couldnt find out lenovo y560 review i hope one ll do it.

Hi,
Has anybody tried connecting this laptop to a hdtv, I just tried it now through hdmi and selection output by projector only but the problem is it doesn't fill up my tv, black borders from all sides and worst of all the color quality is very bad too even if its showing 1920 x 1080p as resolution
Any help will be greatly appreciated -
-
-
My y460 when hooked up to my year old 32" Bravia looks great color-wise, but I too get the black bars on all 4 sides issue. Very annoying, any ideas on how to get it to fill the screen? A quick google search revealed this issue happens with numerous laptops.
-
Ok, I just figured out the black bar problem. Open up the ATI Catalyst Control Center, go to desktops and displays, right click the HDTV icon, select Configure, go to scaling opens, and adjust the bar so it fits your screen.
-
there is a popular forum discussing and even reviewing on y560,translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://ideapad.zol.com.cn/xilie_list_16_160_6591.html&prev=_m.At the same time mention about user issues and problems from this laptop. From the forum i can confirm there is really no heat problem issue.I concern about the flickering problem,it is just you or every y560 users is having the flicking problem. Is the screen really that bad?The forum seem very popular with the y560.I need to know soon buying it this saturday!!!
-
Ok, now i'm having another issue with HDMI, I am no longer getting sound through my TV speakers. I have no idea if I screwed something up in the Catalyst settings but I am absolutely stumped on how to get back audio output thru HDMI. Anyone?
Edit: Fixed this with a driver update from Lenovo support. If anyone else runs across this problem just update the driver. -
another issue is the screen color.what is translated is screen color cast very serious.Refering to screen color is dilated, diluted? Is there any problem with screen color problem from user of y560 ard here?

Hi, i have been following this thread pretty much from the first post reading good and bad reviews since i'll be buying my laptop pretty soon. I just wanted to asked you AboutThreeFitty if you were able to install the ssd you bought? Did the rapiddrive work once you installed it?
Thanks -
-
Thanks for your answer, i thought it was possible to enable rapiddrive installing a ssd and some minor tweaks in the bios.
-
anybody get dolby surround sound to work from the laptops speaker yet?
-
Just ordered my Y560 as a graduation present for myself, can't wait to get it!
I'm coming from a T60p w/ a great matte screen (1600x1200), so it'll be interesting to see how I adapt to this new lower res glossy screen.
However, I have my computer docked quite a bit to my 20" monitor so hopefully it won't bother me too much. -
thanks -
When I looked at Y460 and Y560, it was easy to make a choice which was y460. Y560 is cheaper and has better spec but it has really low screen resolution for its size and price.
Y460 on the other hand has perfect spec and screen resolution.
I am about to order Y460 now, just waiting for a coupon. -
Heads up for y560 buyers.... USPIDEAPAD0603 coupon puts the i7 verison 4gb ram UNDER $1000(USA) -
I really don't know why they decided to put 1366x768 on 15inch laptop. That was the deal breaker for me.
How big of difference is it between HD 5730 and HD 5650 ? According to quick googling, the difference is minimal. -
I agree that they should have at least given an option for a higher res screen, that would have made this the *perfect* laptop for me. -
Ordered one today. They have father's day sale going on which reduced Y460 price down to 940 CAD from 1249 CAD with freeshipping.
I am sick of waiting anyway. This one looks much better than Alienware M11x which I was initially going to order. -
good choice alucasa.
I just got mine. Build quality is fine, but not as good as ASUS.
The crapware that comes with it is annoying.
Temp wise, it does run warm on the side vent, and hot underneath, but nothing crazy. I was a bit suprised at the temp of the bottom of the notebook, will have to test it out more; maybe my fan isn't working at full speed.
Graphics wise, i'm confused
The intel chip was able to run SC2 WITH the same settings at my ATI 5730. HOW is that possible? Unless the switchable graphics really isn't switching. I notice with and without ATI graphics on, my battery life is the same. -
i got my y460 earlier this week (usa 520/5650 model) and wanted to share my experience AND also ask for help....
the laptop is awesome! heat is about the same as on any other laptop--it will be hotter than the ambient temp, so if outdoors it is 90+ the laptop obviously will be hotter than that.
the hottest part of the laptop by far is the hard drive. since replacing it with an intel 160ssd, the noise level dropped by a factor of at least 3, and the palmrest on the left stays cool to touch.
Second hottest thing in the laptop is the intel 6300 network card i put in ( i have 5 ghz router and did not want to use the stock intel 1000 wifi card). this card is a scorcher but performs better than any wireless i have ever seen. it IS power efficient so if you are not actually using wireless while the card is on, it stays cool..once u start to push data over wifi u can roast eggs on this thing easily (small eggs)
I did not buy an Active cooled laptop cooler pad, but bought a flat alum one, and it works great (laptop stays cool and no additional noise) its this one right here:
Newegg.com - Antec Silent Passive Cooling Model Notebook Cooler Basic
I also wanted more HD space so i took the original hot/noisy hard drive , bought a caddy for it and it works great (u can probably find it cheaper on ebay, it;s a standard laptop dvd replacement caddy with a standard sata/sata power connector on the back) 2nd Bay SATA HDD (or SSD) drive caddy for Lenovo IdeaPad Y550 [OBHD-SATA-SATA-B] - $42.00 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks
i pulled off the DVD drive faceplate (curved faceplate) and used electric tape and doublesided tape to mount it to the caddy....the laptop/caddy looks stock but no more bloody dvd drive and i got another 450 gigs instead! you can also order an extra curved faceplate from lenovo if u want to have a stock looking swapable dvd drive and a stock looking hd caddy..i don;t plan to use the dvd drive ever , so i did not go this route..... if u want to see some pics of this let me know..in case you are wondering this shifted 80% of the perceivable heat to the back-lower-right side of the laptop where the caddy sits...if heat is a BIG concern to YOU i would recommend swapping stock hard drive for a cheaper ssd and keep the dvd drive in place.
5650 overclocks for ME to about 740/940 which gives me a 3dmark 06 score of 8000 exactly at 1280*1024 (most people run 3dmark on the smaller laptop resolution 1366*768 and my score is NOT comparable to those...my score is more usefull for comparing to a desktop system, which is not fair but may provide people some data they did not have )
What i need help with: i rebuilt my y460 using Win 7 Ultimate[ edit: 64 bit] . i installed all drivers and everything i use seems to be working (btooth, wireless, network, sound, hdmi sound, slide nav, webcam, touchpad etc) However in device manager there is a "pci simple communications controller" that has no driver and does NOT get recognized via plug and play/windows drivers.... the "physical description" reads: \Device\NTPNP_pci0003 does anyone know what device/driver i need to make this work? is this the express card connection that will be recognised when i put in an expresscard?
let me know if you want to see pics or any specific benches, and thanks in advance for any help with the PCI issue!
D -
I always do a clean install on new laptops anyway, so "crapware" won't bother me.
I am not worried about temps. I own a gaming 17inch gateway laptop. It can't get any hotter than my giant gaming laptop. Though I do plan to replace it with Y460. My shoulder is hurting too much carrying it around.
I'd say video card switch is somehow not working on yours.
-
-
there are 3 antenna indeed (4 but 4th is not accessible, it is blue and i can see it running under the rim), and to replace them is a snap-cover on the bottom. super easy access. once the cover is off it is 1 screw to remove card itself..whole thing took less than 5 mins. ....
there are 3 panels on the bottom in total.
1 cover for wifi card (snap in cover).
1 cover plate for another mini pcie slot/ (lenovo will use this slot to put in a mini pcie ssd to enable Rapid Drive) as well as hdd access (2 or 3 screws for this panel) ....
.the 3rd panel provides access to heatsink fopr cpu/gpu/RAM so cpu IS replaceable (video card is welded onto mother board) this one is 6 screws i think..i have not opened this panel on mine yet..but good to know i can do so in a year when that heatsink is full of dust bunnies
EDIT: only 3 covers, the RAM and CPU/GPU share one cover on the bottom. my mistake, i saw separate vents and assumed it was a separate set of screws for the cover!
folks posted this link before but i will save u the thread search
this is the post ( i am not the poster on this link, but awesome job by poster) that gave me the confidence to buy this thing in the first place and pick it all apart
Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 Disassembly | LaptopZ's Blog
one note---one photo legend reads "cpu and chipset", thats not the chipset up there top right, thats the radeon! http://blog.laptopz.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y460-Disassembly-9.png
NOTE2: my usa 520/5650 version did NOT come with simcard slot as that blog pictures. not a bummer i was not expecting it -
I am surprised to spot the Simcard slot as well. Does that mean the one he has can support 3G internet ?
-
the one in the blog link (apac or EU version or unreleased-americas version) can support 3g internet and lenovo has drivers posted at the every bottom of the driver page here Lenovo Support - Drivers & Downloads
for me with current usa version, that space is empty with no mounting hardware... i would have to buy a mini pcie adapter like one of these
mini pci mobile broadband - Google Product Search
and use up the other available pcie slot (under same cover as hdd) -
Well, I have Rogers 3.5G wireless internet stick (5gb bandwidth per month @ whooping 65 CAD a month). It's basically a USB mobile broadband adapter with a SIM card installed.
It'd be very nice if I can get 3G wireless installed on it somehow. That'd make the laptop truly mobile. -
Hi DILLIGAFF, I'm interested in seeing your SSD performance. I had my HDD replaced with 256 GB SSD. It rans very well and I didn't encounter any driver problems during installation. The temperature of the Y460 regular HDD on left side palm rest gets to about 88F under full load and 79F on SSD. It boots up relatively quickly (25 seconds) but I guess SSD performance is still at its infancy. I was expecting something under 20 seconds.
My other Y460 with regular HDD and XP Pro boots up in about 23 seconds (that's 2 seconds faster than with SSD). It's very happy in XP Pro but I'm not done installing XP drivers yet.
You could see my boot up test of regular HDD vs. SSD by typing "Y460 SSD" on youtube. -
boot up from bios screen to login prompt in win7 ultimate 64 (using an external 1920 * 1200 monitor connected via hdmi) is 14 seconds.
you probably won;t get the maximum ssd performance potential using XP due to a few factors:
1) xp lacks all the feature necessary to maximize most ssd (trim being the big one).
2) most 256gd SSD are slow and not comparable to Fast ssd like New Sandforce or Intel ssd. the only fast ssd i know about thats not super overpriced is the crucial c300. most of the rest are either super expensive (new sandforce) or older/ slow
find the ssd model number u have and look for reviews online, that will tell u what you have. then try installing windows 7, and it will probably run faster
EDIT : to try and get a better comparison of ssd perf in this laptop i ran the "as ssd" benchmark: http://alex-is.de/PHP/fusion/downloads.php?cat_id=4
and got this on the intel 160 ssd gen 2 trim enabled:
test ran in MB
SeqTest

Thanks. I'm leaving the Y460 with regular HDD with XP Pro instead of Win 7. For the other Y460 with Win 7, the only changes I have made so far is replaced the orginal drive with SSD. I checked newegg and Intel only have 160 GB SSDs. The model number for my SSD is Crucial CT256M225, it has 250/200 Mb read + write speeds. It's fast but 25 seconds boot-up is still not fast enough. Newegg just dropped the price by $85 from $630. Maybe mine is defective. -
I agree. I was originally going to get an Asus UL80VT (after getting impatient waiting for the new UL80JT) before I found out about the y460. I checked out the UL50 at Best Buy (very similar to the UL80 but slightly bigger) and the build quality was a big disappointment, tons of case flex and some of the worst keyboard flex i've ever seen.
