Since you were told that there would be a Thinklight, you should be waived the restocking fee. I wouldn't open it and explain your situation (nicely) to customer service.

I read that you were trying to figure out a solution a while back to a backlit keyboard. Are there any replaceable keyboards that can be used or any mods anyone has tried?

I haven't heard of anything. The keys on these are solid plastic, so that won't work. Lenovo doesn't make any backlit keyboards so you can't swap it. Lastly, I'm not sure if another brand of keyboard would work. It would have to be the exact same size, have all of the connections be compatible, and be recognized by the laptop. In short, it seems near impossible. The only solution would be to put fiber optic lights under the keys and light up the spaces in between the keys. IMO that wouldn't work as well and would look stupid.

Has anyone maxed out the memory on the 560? Going from the OE 4gb pc3-8500 to 8gb pc3-10600? Been searching all around and in here, couldn't find any responses.

How was the difference in terms of overall computer speed? Any difference in gaming in any way? Just wondering :)

Honestly, I don't know where to start with the dv6t QE. The biggest thing is the screen is terrible. Then there is the unusable touchpad. I don't mind the keyboard and the backlight is really nice. I like the overall design of the machine... the metal is awesome. The bloatware is terrible. Unlike Lenovo that actual has their own pretty useful programs. I don't think there is one HP program that I would use. Keep it mind that the dv6t QE does NOT have CoolSense.
Also HP put quick keys along the left side of the keyboard, while not terrible, it's also not all that useful and leads to awkward hand placement.
From my use, it does seem to run pretty warm, but I have no numbers to back that up. The palm rest gets warm.
That's about the short and sweet of it. I'm hopeful my experience with the DM1Z will be more positive.

It looks like the y470 which is due out in May is made of metal with a glass screen. Still not sure if that one will have a backlit keyboard. 4 months is a long time to wait for an upraded chasis and video card.

I wanted the Y460P as the Y470 will have a new "island" style keyboard (puke) and worse battery life. Also a full glass screen will mean that the laptop will be completely unusable. See the M11X's screen for an example.

My y560 came with 8gb RAM from the factory. I'm sure it performs virtually the same as if it had 4gb in terms of gaming, but since I got it from the outlet that way I'm not complaining.

Hi there I just want to raise this issue, im from philippines and this issue regarding Y460 is the thread now in our country

The monitor is turned to be black for a second (just like when the graphic card are changing) when connecting and disconnecting the charger.

Is this ok, or there is some problem. We already raise this to Lenovo but they haven't answer yet

does anyone has the same problem with us, and how to fix it.

Take note also that we already change the driver version to all available version lenovo has

That is probably normal b/c of teh switching of teh integrated graphics card on battery to the ATI when plugged in. It goes to the integrated to save battery power while on battery

    I've heard no switchable graphics?
Is that true? That would be the deal breaker for me.
Also, what are the dimensions and weight of the y460p?

he might not have updated the drivers correctly, for AMD switch you have to install first the intel drivers, then you have to install AMD drivers. Maybe its different for this model, but for every other that has this option this is the way to go.

its explained better in the envy 14 lounge, the acer 3820tg and the 4820tg lounges.

The dimensions of the y460 are the same as the y460p, its the same chassis.

I am able to get the y460P for $989 and I can probably find an additional 15% off on the following specs:

    i7-2630QM (2.0GHz, 6MB Cache)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550M 1GB
    8 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz
    750GB 5400

Should I get that or should I wait for the e420s? I need something that's light and thin, powerful, and can last for at least 5-6 hours (I'll be happy with 5) from a single battery charge.

    Does the y460p fit this?

According to the info that we have, the e420s is going to be thinner, lighter and more powerful.

The iiiiiiiick part is that it might not support the i7 quads, which for me leads to the idea of a greater battery life.

Im in the waiting line as you are now, I have to change for a more portable and more powerful package, off course not forgetting the build quality and durability of the laptop.

Another possible option is the Vaio SA, which has basically the same specs except for the 13.3'' size, instead of the 14'', and the better screen that would come with it (1600*900 res base, probably there would be an option for a higher res, not that I find it comfortable or useful for that matter, but the great contrast and colors are clearly a step up against the possible 1366*768 screen of the e420s)

I'll be very happy with an i5-480, 6530 GPU, 4GB RAM, and a 500 GB HDD on the e420s. But this needs to be around 800 with the student discount. Do you think this is possible, or will lenovo skimp out on the student discount version of the laptop?

Well I dont know how much it would cost, nor anyone with the discounts and the config that you want.

What we do know is the 750 base price, what we can expect is that the gpu would be a 100-200 ish upgrade, as this is the case with most laptops. I do hope that in the base config the gpu comes standard.

What we do have to remember is that this is supposed to be affordable, not as affordable as the e420 and e520, but nonetheless cheaper than the real thinkpad line.

Moreover I didnt even knew that the student discount was a separate version, instead of a regular version minus some 5%

yeah, I really hope that the GPU will be in the base price as well. But then again, I've been hearing that the e420s will have an integrated graphics card and up to a 2gb ATI 6500. So perhaps to get the 1gb graphics option would be $100 extra.

the e420s use a 6600 series card, not the rebranded 6500 (aka 5650/5700 series)

The amount of memory is of no consequence, the bus width of the cards is too low, so anything higher than 1g is just a waste. You can check the review of the 6950 1gb version in anandtech to see that the amount of memory only affects significantly when going to 2560*1600

    oops.
Yeah, I meant 6600 series. And I agree with you, the 2gb would be a big waste. I would most likely stick to the 1gb version.

If there is the 512mb, would there be a huge difference b/w 1gb and 0.5 gb?
I think I would still get the 1gb.

I have a 4670m with 512mb, and there is no difference between this model and the 1g version.

Although I would get the 1g right away, this would lead me to problems in some older games that I play, but well patience is a virtue....

But this should serve me well with my chess program and database and moderate strategy gaming.

How easy or hard would it be to swap out the DVD drive in a Y460P? I would eventually like to get a Blu-ray reader/write.

I just purchased the Lenovo Y460 with the ATI 5650 graphics card... but I'm hesitating to get the Acer 3820TG instead (also with ATI 5650) because of all the 'heating' issues I've heard about the Lenovo Y460........ and I might want to overclock the mhz just a bit on the GPU..

    Any opinions appreciated

To get rid of bloatware, just go to Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program (Under "Programs" on the bottom left.)

After you remove all your bloatware, be sure to run CCleaner or something similar to remove all traces of the programs from your system. Add/remove programs won't do it.

Probably not a replacement of the whole laptop, but I'm guessing you'll have to send it in and they'll pop in a new HD. Make sure you backup/image before you send it in.

Lenovo support / sales is a joke.

Here's the 2 issues i have with my NEW laptop:
    1. LOUD clicking noise in harddrive (meaning it will fail soon)
    2. 50% of the time when I start-up the laptop, before booting windows the screen turns "off" / stays off.. (you hear the sounds but screen stays dead)

    - I called Lenovo SALES department: they told me to call technical department.
    - I called Technical department, they told me I'll have to send it in for a new replacement but that I have to call Sales department for it
    - I called Sales department AGAIN and they told me, "oh sorry Lenovo does not replace laptops, the only option you have is a full refund if you send it back."

^^ Where are you from? If you're from the USA(I think Canada is the same.), I would call back and try to get the support center in Atlanta.(Doesn't go there if the phone lines are full.) I would write down the name of the person and if you're not getting what you want, ask to be sent to a manager or high tier person. It's frustrating and the people who answer phones never seem to know what is going on. Hang in there.

My harddrive has clicking noise since the day i got it, in april. Hard drive still running... I think this seagate harddrive is lower quality.

Do watch out for this... a clicking harddrive is a BAD thing. Usually means your drive is going out. I got a bad seagate once. It clicked from the second I put it in my laptop and it went out in three months.

That's odd, the Lenovo support person I talked to was not in India or the US< bit in the Philippines.

Just for future reference, how does one contact the Atlanta center?
