I have the clicking sound too. No problems with the hard drive. Havent had the chance to have it brought back due to work on the y460. Only problem is the clicking sound but its intermittent.

Hi ,
I have a few questions,
1, can I easily replace the original HDD with SSD, by 'easily' I mean, other than removing a few screws, do I need to be extra careful on other things? cables, connections..etc.
2, what type of SSD can I use? SATA or SATA II,
3, if I installed the new SSD, can I still use the driver/recovery CDs? are there any recovery data, drivers, windows system located on the original HDD or those are all on the driver/recovery CDs?
Thank you all in advance. -
1) its easy, 2 screws and ur at the hdd, and u just take off the adapter bay thing (another screw), and put ur ssd in that. I think thats all. screw everything back and ur good to go
2)sata 2
3) if u clone ur original to ssd.
drivers are in the 2nd patition of the original hdd -
I have the same problem. When I put my laptop to sleep and turn it back on. 50% of the time the screen is off but everything else seems to be on.
Anyone know a solution? Gets extremely annoying sometimes. -
Happens to me aswell, apparently it is a common problem with this laptop.
-
thank you!
-
happens to me too, recently, and happens only when im at home... lol
-
ok the sleep issue, I havent had but coming out of hybernation it has done this. What I heard is updating the BIOS can help that. That sux tho and is extreamly frusterating. I just used sleep a few minutes ago for first time in while and it worked alright. Try hybernation and see if that does anything wrong.
-
Workaround for this is to just close then open the lid. I do this all the time whenever there's just a black screen upon resumption from sleep or hibernation. Of course, I would rather Lenovo fix this.
-
It still happens when I close the lid..

new bios 71 for y560 users, fixes gradients, pixel static, and windows index refreshing bugs. flashed and tested and i approve!

This may have been mentioned before, but is the secondary mini pci-e slot wired for SATA? Does this make it completely incompatible with traditional mpci-e devices? The schematic for the y460 states that it has 2 mini pci-e slots, but I have a feeling that the second empty one (which I assume would be used for the rapiddrive thing) isn't wired like a normal slot.
Also I am pretty sure this has been posted before, but is it possible to install a mini pci-e SSD in the second port AND boot from it, or is it only compatible with the "rapid drive" technology? -
I never heard of anyone doing this yet. People wanted to try it before Rapid Drive came out, but they never reported back. The only problem I see is the Software side of things. It's obvious that the hardware could work but I'm not sure how it would work along with the hard drive.
-
I'm not experiencing any of those problems, and I'm quite happy with my custom Fn/Ctrl swap and GPU volt modded version of whatever I was on before. I don't exactly want to risk bricking the machine again modding and flashing another version.
On a side note, get your refurb Y560 with i7 740qm and 8gb RAM for $678 from the outlet. Or the i3 model with 4gb for $500. -
I'm thinking of getting the y560. Would you current owners recommend it or do you not like it? (giving you troubles?)
-
Does Lenovo ever update the graphics drivers for these? We can't use the standard AMD/ATI drivers, right?
-
I tried the 10.11 (I think) ATI drivers and while they worked fine for gaming, they crashed constantly on the desktop.
-
I am going to try AMD's latest drivers (from last week) for Mobility Radeon and see how I feel about them. I have downloaded as backups the latest AMD and Intel graphics drivers from Lenovo's website. If I choose to reinstall those, do I install the Intel first or the AMD first?
-
Nevermind - the installer from AMD's website says my hardware is not supported and that I must get a driver from the manufacturer.
-
Yes you can, but you have to get them from Akamai, not the packaged drivers from the ATI site. I am currently running 11.1 on my y460 with no issues whatsoever.
-
Please delete
-
What do you mean get them from Akamai? I downloaded the most recent ones from ATI and installed them without any problems (so far). I don't have switchable graphics, though, if that's the difference.
-
Correct. If you have switchable graphics you can't just download any version of drivers. You must find "special" ones.
-
Is there a link?
-
Has anyone tried or had any success using SetFSB with the i7 quad Y560s? I'm sure there's more than 1.73 ghz in my 740qm, if I had some way of unleashing that extra power.
-
I think this link may work for 11-2:
https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/920...mobile/11-2_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe
I just took the link and changed it to 11-2 to get that driver version, since they tend to name the files the same things (but with different versions). I haven't tried 11.2 yet, but it should work.
You have to switch to the ATI video card, then run the installer. Sometimes the screen will turn black and won't go back on; in that case just wait until the hard drive activity slows and do a soft restart (i.e. press the power button once, but make sure the setting for the power button is to shut it down). A couple of times when I installed the drivers the screen didn't go black and the installation finished fine; I'm not sure what determines whether it does that or not. -
Thanks, I will give it a try. -
I tried that driver, and it seemed to work fine. Switching graphics worked as well. However, after I switched back to Intel and restarted my computer, I could no longer switch back to the Radeon, so I rolled back to my previous drivers and settings.
-
I tried that version of 11.2 again, and I have come to the following conclusions regarding its compatability with my Y560:
1) Installation is perfectly fine.
2) If I boot with the Radeon enabled, it works fine, including switching back and forth.
3) If I boot using the Intel graphics, I cannot switch anymore.
edit:
I am embarassed. Just after posting this, I tried to switch again, and it worked. It even allowed me to switch while having Internet Explorer active, which I could not do with Lenovo's stock drivers. Now I do not know why switching was not working some of the time... -
I picked up a refurb Y560 last week when Lenovo had them on sale. So far I'm pretty impressed with the laptop. It's well built, fast, and looks great.
-
Indeed. It does (almost) everything my desktop can do just as well, and I have found myself preferring it as of late due to the fact that I can lay in bed while using it.
-
Hi - I was wondering if anyone did any benchmarking when they upgraded from the supplied Lenovo video driver on the Y460 (switchable graphics) - 3DMark06, Gaming etc? I was thinking of doing the update to the 11.1 driver that Mjloner said is working without issue on his y460.
I just got my y460, upgraded the RAM to 8 gb and I am waiting on my new WD Scorpio Black to do a hard drive upgrade. So far I'm loving my new machine! -
Well, I'm running 11.2 now and it fixed a freezing issue I had with Borderlands so I'd say that's a major improvement right there. Load times are a bit faster in BC2 as well, and I've noticed a small increase in my minimum FPS in most games.
-
I was also thinking of venturing into an ssd + hdd setup and was looking into the optical drive replacement and slapping in a 2.5 ssd into the main slot. That new Intel 310 SSD msata is pretty sweet though. I have read though that the compatibility of it is the big unknown. Can anyone here shed some light?
-
Has anyone done a clean install of windows 7? If so, did you encounter any problems along the way?
I just finished uninstalling most of the bloatware that came with my Y560. The thing is, when I boot up and ctrl-alt-delet, the task manager says I have 80 proccesses running. That seems excessive, my previous notebook only had 41 processes running on bootup. -
I have 70 processes running when idle after a clean install. On a normal day it has about 1.5Gb of RAM being used without any applications open.
-
How often do modified drivers for our switchable graphics come out? Do they come out every time AMD does a new driver, or only some of the time?
-
did anyone find after installing the new bios that their energy management app was not working correctly? my screen brightness not change when i change the different settings? anyone know a solution to this?
-
I think the left hinge on my Y560 has its days numbered. Nothing appears to have broken yet, but every time I open and close the lid there's a creaking sound coming from it (you can also feel it). Based on the posts I've read concerning the hinge, the plastic column that keeps the top and bottom halves of the laptop together using a screw will eventually break, and afterwards the chassis will bulge, if not snap open every time the display is opened.
My question is to the ones who have experienced this problem: Is there a permanent/lasting DIY fix for it? I figure even if Lenovo fixes the hinge/chassis should it break under warranty, the design flaw is still there, and it's just a matter of time before it breaks again. I suppose duct tape is always a solution, but I would like to know if there are any more elegant ones if they exist.
Additionally, when the hinge breaks.. how bad is it exactly? I've read that the display won't close correctly, but how incorrectly? The display is still able to close, right? Is the laptop's portability affected?
Thanks! -
This might be of some help: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/543887-y560-hinge-issue-explained.html
My y460 has began to make a pop sound when closing it and my warranty runs out in two days.... Time to renew it! -
So you can renew a warranty for another year after you buy the laptop, assuming your laptop is still under warranty?
-
What I gathered from that thread was that the hinge issue for the Y460/560 isn't that bad. It seems as if the hinge itself doesn't break, but the part it's attached to becomes separated from the rest of the laptop, resulting in an unsightly bulge on the speaker panel upon opening the display and potentially popping the panel off, but nothing like, say, the Alienware M11x's hinge issue where the assembly itself comes off and the display is basically flopping loosely as result. That sound about right? If so, maybe duct tape will work (to keep the speaker panel from popping off, not prevent the breakage itself).
-
From what I have seen/read, the y560 is more prone to this than the y460 due to its size. I have my y460 for a year and have opened and closed it thousands of times and it only a slight popping sound every once in a while.(Looks like the sound is coming from the where the plastic ends meet.) I can't really complain.
-
I've had my Y560 for a few months now. It kind of sucks that I'm already hearing a problem coming, but the laptop has been phenomenal in every other way so far, so whatevs. As long as I can keep using it as a laptop with a display that can open and close properly (even if it takes duct tape or some other fix) rather than only as a stationary slab, I can deal with it. Better this than having an actual broken hinge or other more critical component failure.
EDIT:
All right, I bit the bullet and did a little disassembly, and here's what I found:
That is where the screw (mentioned in this thread) turns into. Needless to say, its days are numbered, and the number is small. That being said, it isn't the cause of the creaking/clicking I've been hearing in my Y560 every time I open and close the display; those still exist even with the plastic panel off.
As far as I can see there's no saving the piece the screw turns into. I suppose I could epoxy it and thus secure the little metal piece for a while longer, but that would just be a little while longer. As for the noises I've been hearing, I'm going to be poking around a little more to see if I can get to the bottom of them. Wish me luck! -
11.3 is available, and if you modify the link Mjolner gave, the modded version seems to be available too. -
lenovo released a certified ati driver update 8.772 on their support page a few weeks ago
there was also an update for nvidia -
Hey.
I got a problem with my y560. I got it since about 3 months an in the beginning it worked fine, however, the switchable graphics never really seemed to work, but i didnt really mind it, since the dedicated graphics (ati 5730) was running all the time and i didnt want to change that anyway. But at some point it switched graphic cards to the onboard intel one (til now i dont know why it switched or what happened) and it doesnt show the ati card in the device manager anymore. I've tried literally any solution for other problems i found on the web (including installing drivers from page 182 of this thread).
Could it be that my ati card is broken? If yes, is there a way to find out? Or does anyone have an idea how to fix that?
korrekt -
I don't think the Y560 has switchable graphics..
-
There is versions with and without switchable graphics, but mine has switchable graphics...
-
If your using integrated graphics, it will not show the ati card in device manager.
Are you switching using the software or using the switch?
Edit:
A) check in the bios if the graphics is in switchable mode/discreet mode, try switch between the 2 settings and reboot. (if its in switchable, change it to discreet and check if ATI card is running after reboot. etc)
B) [switch it back to switchable if it isn't already]
1) download the latest ati driver from lenovo
http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_list.aspx?CategoryID=661448
2) download/install driver sweeper
http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
3)uninstall the ati drivers
4) reboot into safe mode (repeatedly press F8 when the laptop is booting)
choose safe mode in the list
5) run the driver sweeper and check ati driver, click analyize then click clean
6) reboot
7) install lenovo ati drivers, reboot as needed
