To make one thing clear, 600X doesn´t have a T440s for himself, he tested one for one Day in one of the local reseller-stores.

    Yes.

Yes, you can put in a 9mm HDD or SSD and you can upgrade one memory module for a max of 12GB system memory.

I bought the Ultra Dock 90W already and I should get it in 5 days. I however won't have a T440s until NA starts selling them.

In the german thinkpad forum, someone else seems to own one already. He posted around 7hrs battery life, with the 3-cell battery iirc. You two can correct me if I'm wrong, german isn't my native language.

600X, how was the palmrest material, is it comfortable?

The guy you are referring to had battery life issues, so I don't trust him. Only very few people actually know how to do a proper clean install and test battery life properly. I'll wait for ibmthink's in this regard. At least I know that he's capable.

As for the Palmrest, it's typical ABS plastic but a bit thicker than in previous models and very stiff. Also the surface is now smooth and slightly rubberized. making it very comfortable to put your hands on.

Awesome! That means the T440S will be the perfect laptop for me, even if my local retailer doesn't get models with a dedicated graphics.. Now to play the waiting game..

This is so disappointing. I very much wanted the T440p to be my ideal Thinkpad, but it looks as if the trackpoint "buttons" may be a deal-breaker. I don't use trackpads at all and must have a good trackpoint. I just don't know why Lenovo felt this buttonless configuration would be suitable for trackpoint users. Perhaps it will be acceptable in actual use, but it certainly doesn't sound that way from your feedback and others.

600X, was there any issue with text being too small, 1080p in 14" screen?

This very much depends on the person using the machine. I'm still young and thus have good eyes, so it was no problem at all. 1080p is a really nice size to use without scaling on 14". I have a 1200p display in my 15,4" W500, which is great as well. Some might have to get used to it first, but I assure you, once you do you won't want to miss it! Text may be smaller, but you need to keep in mind that it is also allot sharper. Pictures look gorgeous as well since they also appear very crisp and sharp due to all the detail that can now be displayed in a smaller area.

My 2013 Macbook Air has a 54whr battery (they increased it on this last Haswell refresh).
I get about 10.5hrs in Win 8 bootcamp which is incredibly good. Apple used Intel's high end Haswell ULV cpus with HD5000 graphics.

What's the T440s battery whr capacity?
I think I read it's only 2 x 23.5whr batteries for a total of 47whr, and only comes with low end ULV HD graphics.

Hard to believe how Apple managed to fit a battery with a 15% greater capacity in a much slimmer footprint like the Air compared to Lenovos chunky T440S.

    1. There is no 2.5" HDD inside the MBA, which takes a lot of space
    2. There is no changeable RAM inside the MBA, which also takes room
    3. The MBA has much less ports

Didn't Lenovo's marketing research tell them that most ultrabook buyers don't really care about these points? ;)

The ones that do care about installing their own SSD's, ports, and maxing out RAM are the pro users that buy thin mobile workstations like the X230 and T430s both of which Lenovo just killed and replaced with consumer grade ultrabooks with crappy specs and a 15% lower battery capacity than a Macbook Air.

Lenovo, once again in their infinite stupidity decided that the only option pro users need is a thick and chunky T440p that looks like a Dell from 2005.

Basically the Thinkpad lineup some us once cherished is now completely dead.

Can someone explain to me where it is and how does that roll cage work in here? These are the internals of t440s and I don't see any roll cage like in bigger T series thinkpads. It seems to me that all that roll cage thing became only marketing without any additional reinforcment. It looks now that all the internals are just in a 1mm thick abs plastic/carbon case, doesn't it? Or am I wrong?

    Untitled.jpg

And this I think is a normal roll cage (T410).

Nonsense. The specs are adequate. You can still use them the same way as T430s and X230. The best current CPU for T440s and X240s is on par with an Standard-Voltage Ivy-Bridge i5, and the coming i7-4600U will be even more powerful. At least you can use the T440s without being forced to buy a second battery like the T430s, where battery-life was really bad with the standard battery. ULV CPUs are much more efficent and still manage to be really powerful. Tell me: Which tasks would you do on an machine like the T430s, which require and i7 over and i5? Both are more than powerful enough, and the i7 ULVs used in the T440s are still. ;)

And with the optional 6-cell battery X240 and T440s have nearly more than 100% more battery capacity than the MBA.

The T440s uses a very simliar Roll-Cage design as the T430s (but not the same): The removable baseunit is made out of magnesium, and the palmrest is combined with a layer of magnesium (which you can see in the first picture).

Judging from the cries of people here about only 1 changeable RAM in X440s, it is safe to tell that many people care about them. There are also a lot users like me that want the build quaility and lightweightness of X and T but never max out the RAM. The users are not extreme as either 1) who care only about mac books or 2) power users who will max out cpu and RAM.

We are a very small percentage of the user base and potential market. I don't think our collective voice carries much weight with any of the vendors and the vast majority of the user base doesn't go to the degrees of specificity on these aspects that we do, nor care. Shame that, they should.

I understand that it's your job to pimp Lenovos on message forums. You and the guy with the near sighted kids that can't see screen door effect thru a screen door crack me up sometimes.:hi2:

That's the problem, the specs are just barely adequate. But the ThinkPad T and X series lineup is not supposed to be about 'barely adequate' specs. They have other lineups for this consumer crap.

No you cannot compare computing power of a ULV vs full power mobile cpus when it comes to running things like virtual machines, and several other cpu intensive operations.

Absolute nonsense and marketing BS. The T430s comes with a 6 cell battery. T440S also comes with 2 x 3 cell batteries (same 6 cell total).
On T430s you can add an optional 3 cell bay battery for longer uptime considering it's a full voltage mobile CPU in a very slim foot print.

My iPad's cpu is even more efficient than a ULV cpu, what's your point? Now will you convince me that it's all anyone needs?

We run virtual labs and presentations using multiple virtual machines on our fleet of T430s' all the time. They're all equipped with i7's and 16GB RAM and now that's not possible anymore on this generation of Thinkpad unless we're willing carry around a thick and ugly 5LB T440p.

At what cost to size and weight, there's goes the X240 & T440's portability again. Besides you can also get a very compact external 100Whr battery for MBA/MBP as well and its a lot slimmer and has 3x more capacity than Lenovo's solution.

While we're on the subject of comparing MBA 2013 vs T440s specs, Apple added significant top tier hardware changes to the 2013 Haswell Airs that include a brand new PCIe SSD, 802.11ac support and LPDDR3 memory.

You're sadly mistaken as usual. The majority of users complaining about only 1 RAM slot in the latest Thinkpad series are those pro users that are accustomed to using their X230 & T430s with full power CPUs as slim mobile workstations. They have little to no interest in replacing their mobile workstations with a crippled ultrabook.

Sure. But you won´t be able to get more than 3.5 -4 h with normal office and web use with the T430s due to the use of full.voltage CPUs.

How many cells a battery has doesn´t say much. The ThinkPad Twist has a 8-cell battery, which is still smaller in battery capacity than a 3-cell battery used in the T431s for example.

And still not nearly as much battery capacitiy than T440s with the optional 6-cell battery...

The i7-4500U uses maximum 15w and is still as powerful as a full-powered i5-3210M or a i5-2520M. Thats my point. ;) Its just more efficient.

So, how do you know how much the T440p weights? Let me guess: Specualation. How do you know that don´t weights about 2kg rather than 2.27kg? The W540 is also lighter than it predessor, that should be possible for the T440p too. And it should be a bit thinner than the T430, not much thicker than the T430s.

And I thought you wouldn´t care about looks? This is another unnecessary consumer thing...

Sorry, I don´t response to nonsense like this one... :hi2:

Are you sure? AnandTech | Is Haswell Ready for Tablet Duty? Battery Life of Haswell ULT vs Modern ARM Tablets shows that the effectiveness is (surprisingly) similar ;)

M.2 format also can use PCIe. It's a pity though that one can't install full sized M2 drive in the t440s

    Will you ever use it?

Soldered into the mainboard. But I guess it would be enough if one could get t440s with 8 GB soldered, then after adding another 8 GB stick it would give us 16

I get about 8hrs uptime on my T430s with 6 + 3 cell bay battery in a normal office and web use environment.
But why are you trying to compare last year's T430s' Ivy bridge cpus with the latest Haswell battery efficiency.

Yes, and full power Haswell mobile cpus will also be equally very efficient. Again you're spitting out marketing nonsense to make it seem like everyone should now choose only a ULV cpu as the only option.

Well if the T440s *STARTS* at 3.5lbs, and the T440 *STARTS* at 4.0lbs, It's unlikely the tank like ultrathick T440p will be much less than 5lbs.
meanwhile the MBA is just 2.96lbs

Of course I care about looks, weight, battery life and functionality. It's the total package.

No problem, you don't have to. Every regular on this forum already knows it.

On a more humorous note, even in Germany they are not happy about losing the dedicated trackpoint buttons:hi2:

Lenovo said many current and next gen user thought the buttons were dumb since they took up space from the trackpad. However, classic Thinkpad user wanted to keep the button. Lenovo needs to please the next gen user who will be buying their products in the long run. I heard the trackpad was pretty good though.

    Sure. With the bay-battery.

No, not as efficient. But it seems you won´t listen to anything...The ULV CPUs are SoC, the normal M-CPUs are not SoC. They are not out yet, so there are not tests yet. But the Quad-Core Haswells are already out. They aren´t really more efficient than their Ivy-Bridge predecessors

Just as I thought, pure speculation...it could be also around 4.5lbs.

The T440p seems to be as thick as the T430 or a bit thinner due to a thinner lid.
    View attachment 101476 3.jpg
The optical illusion "T440p is thicker" comes because the front is less rounded, the T440p is hiding less of its thickness compared with the T430. If you look on the VGA port, you know its really not thicker.

Sure. With much less ports, max. 8 GB of soldered RAM and not maintainablity.

I am just trying to help people and share information about new products when I find them, because others maybe interested as well. I don´t think forums are purely made for ranting the hole day or to cry the whole day because of things that won´t be changed.

Sure. Everyone else with a different logic or opionion is evil or payed. :p

    Huh. No.

Lenovo wants - per their own admission - to go "head to head" against Apple.

"Classic" ThinkPad users were exceptionally peeved about the keyboard layout change, and are not liking the new TrackPoint either.

Let's see if there's enough of "new" users/Apple converts to make up for the loss of all the "old" ones.

And let's not forget that Lenovo makes the majority of its profit on smart phones sold in China, not on ThinkPads, which they very well may be selling at a loss, using "Walmart strategy"...

Apple users don't hate thinkpad, they hate WINDOWS. And for this reason, this strategy is a fail. Reminds me of that time Runescape changed it's signature combat system to mimic other MMO's, except all they did was drive away their playerbase. The same will happen with Thinkpads.

You're mistaken. Lenovo's CEO made it very clear that he intends to use the Thinkpad brand to compete directly with Apple.

So far it's failing miserably. Lenovo isn't going to gain any market share from Apple with the crapastically crippled ultrabooks like the T440s and they're also losing their loyal Thinkpad user base at the same time. Lenovo's Think product and design managers need to be fired. Right here, right now, before the damage is permanent.

That, my good man, would be a year and a half too late.

I'm amongst those who believe that the damage done already *is* permanent and likely beyond repair.

You are misinformed (lacking information) if you think ULV CPU are cheaper than mobile CPU. If you look at Ivy Bridge, Their ULV CPU and Mobile CPU cost nearly the same. Apple is able to get the better CPU because they have the money to do it. I haven't seen any other manufacture that has got Intel to give them better CPU.

Failing? I don't think being #1 in PC shipment is failing and the T440s is not even out for everyone yet so how is it suppose to take market shares from Apple? This feels like the time when everyone complain about facebook redesign and guess what, nobody cares now. By next year, this will be standard just like the Chiclet keyboard, 6 row kb, and 16x9.

I live on a college with a lot of engineers who use MBP with Windows. It turns out that other laptops don't have the same build quality, battery life, or simplicity of the MBP. It has very little to do with Windows.

I don't work at Lenovo. I am just a level headed person. I am pretty sure all the workers at Lenovo are happy with whatever happens because they are getting bonuses that match their monthly pay for the past two years.
