I guess the IPS will be optional, just like X230

I'm a little worried because on the service training link that was provided, it seems that the highest CPU (only, really) available will be the 4200U. I was hoping for something that had at least HD5000 graphics.

Other than that it seems like a fine little laptop. I'm a newbie when it comes to thinkpads, so I'm not terribly upset about the lack of trackpoint buttons. I feel that the re-design has opened the Thinkpad line to a new consumer base: me!

Still the wrong aspect ratio and still the castrated keyboard.

And now the mouse buttons are gone too. Someone deserves to be fired...

The 430s had tb iirc right? So 440s should be the same?

Only a few versions of the T430s had Thunderbolt. The T440s won't, and neither do any new non-Apple laptops AFAIK. It's a shame...

You don't really have much of a choice these days for 16:10 laptops other than Macbooks or older thinkpads. I was surprised and thankful that they ordered 16:10 panels for their newer high-res displays.

The public at large knows nothing until the machine starts selling and shipping. There are very few people (as a percentage of total buyers) that read forums, Engadget, Verge, etc.

Another thing that's missing is the Expresscard slot :(

The 16:9 LCD makes me want to look for a 15" laptop instead...

According to the GB lenovo site, the T431s is coming soon and the T440s is 'new'. If they are released around the same time then what is the purpose of the T431s? Unless it's half the price of the T440s?

I really hope they haven't forgotten about the W and T(p) designs while all this Ultra-book craziness is going on. By that i mean just throwing workstation hardware into an ultra book chassis or keeping a bulky ugly design.

More and more laptops, even in the 15" and above size segments, are axing the ExpressCard slot, so you'll probably find that it's increasingly difficult to get a laptop with such a slot. It'll probably remain in some of the more mainstream, less portability-focused Thinkpads, I'd imagine.

And 15" laptops (besides the MBPs) are all on the 16:9 screen format as well, and generally top out at the same 1920x1080 resolution available on the T440s. So really, unless the higher pixel density of a 14" FHD display is an issue for you, choosing a 15" laptop isn't going to help you out.

If the 13.3" (16:10) rMBP had proper PgUp/Dn/Home/End/Backspace keys I'd be really tempted to ditch Lenovo!

Once rMBP stops using cold metal and sharp edges in the areas where palms touch the laptop, and adds trackpoint, PgUp/PgDn/Home/End/Insert/Delete, gets user-replaceable RAM and HDD/SSD, I'm switching too! Especially if they paint it black.

You know, virtually all of us are newbies here: there was no single T-p model released since 2008 when it was replaced with W-series laptops. Find more background at ThinkPad W Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Existence of T540p and W540 is a bit confusing as for me, albeit I warmly welcome T440p -- that's the long-missing member in ThinkPad family.

I'm really interested in the p too...

However, we should also remember that the actual existence of the T440 and T440p are still essentially rumor at this point. IIRC, we only know about them because of a "compatible with..." entry in some driver documentation that appeared on Lenovo's site. Nothing has been officially announced, and one could make an argument that Lenovo could release other T-series models much much later than the T440s* or even change product plans entirely (I'm just making things up to make a point).

The only reason I put the T440s out of the "rumor" category is because of the continued publication of specs, support docs, etc. on the site. However, it's still not announced either.

    * I periodically check the readme files of drivers for the T440s, hoping to see other T440-series models listed under "compatibility" - and have always been disappointed. I do find this curious. If the T440s, T440, and T440p will be released simultaneously, why is the T440s so far ahead in the driver/docs publishing arena? I'd imagine they would share some components, and technically none of the new T-series has been announced, so why not list all models on a shared driver like the input devices if they would all launch together?

Maybe this is a very subtle marketing campaign (as mentioned earlier) to drive discussion amongst fans. I certainly hope so, and it's working. But that's giving them a lot of credit and adding a lot of work, since all the drivers will need to be updated with new readmes on launch day.

Since yesterday you can preorder the Thinkpad T440s in a German education store. The prices are almost the same compared to the T431s. It starts at around 959 EUR incl. taxes. Hence, I think US prices should start at around 1,000 USD.
Link to the store: ThinkPad T440 20AQS00500 20AQS00600 - ok1.de - Shop für Lehre und Forschung
It says shipping in 1-2 weeks, but I doubt this is realistic...

The Lenovo Sales chat representatives have provided loads of inaccurate or false information in the past, so I'd take their word with (several) grains of salt.

Doesn't look too bulky, which is good. Wonder what sort of battery life this will achieve in conjunction with the internal battery.

    9-cell estimate: 18 hours.

    Actual use: 9-12 hours

    Heavy use: 6 hours

These are the estimates (1/2 to 2/3 for nomal use and 1/3 for heavy use) that I would use for present Thinkpads. But I think Lenovo might be improving on their estimates. (especially telling us that 3-cells with Haswell only gets 6 hours while the T431s got '9' hours out of the same 3-cell)

I own a T430s and looking at the T440s, I believe the T430s to have an overall better design, except for the new trackpad on the T440s which is definitely better, and the new display obviously

I would not trade a few less mm in thickness for not having an easy access to RAM and other hardware in general, one of the reasons people prefer a lot of the thinkpad models is that they are thought out to be upgradable by the user. Having integrated batteries, soldered RAM just kills the deal. I have the feeling Lenovo is trying to put Thinkpads beside macs, and I think this is a bad idea, the new models are leaving behind the uniqueness of Thinkpads little by little.

Also, I like how the T430s, which is still a pretty light and thin laptop, carries a CD/DVD drive which can be replaced for another hdd/sdd or an extra battery easily. So when the rare occasion comes when you need to read a CD/DVD, you can do it.

Another thing I just love about the T430s are the lid latches, hearing that 'clack' when closing the display is nice, also it gives it a tougher more secure feel. I could get use to no latch, but it's nice having it. You can open the display up to 180° on both models but, not that it's a big deal but when you do that on the Xcarbon or the T440s, the display will slightly go under the laptop, lifting it a tiny bit from the back, that doesn't happen in the T430s. Lastly, there's the port arrangement, definitely better having most of them on the back of the laptop like in the T430s.

So the only really great thing about the T440s is the new IPS display. I really hope it will be possible to swap it with the T430s', that would make the T430s perfect! Except for its lame speakers heh.

I'm thinking that the T440 will probably be a much better deal than the T440s. If you are into the sort of design they are throwing in the T440s, just go for the Xcarbon.

Why get an X1 carbon over a t440s when the screen is better, has better battery life, has user upgradeable ram/hdd, and a dedicated GPU?

If you want upgradeable parts, then the X1C is not your machine. While the screen is not IPS on the X1C, it's still pretty good. The T440(s) is significantly heavier than the X1C. Adding the slice battery will make it more so. The new trackpoint buttons would give me pause, though if you a touch pad used, the new set up is probably a plus. Those might be some reason to pick the X1C over the T440(s).

The T440s display uses eDP whereas the T430s display uses LVDS. So you would need to find a LVDS version of the display or some means of converting the signal.

I would say, this is a next confirmation of existence of T440, T440p, T540 Dual-Core and T540 Quad-Core -- this page http://www.lenovoquickpick.com/usa/system/thinkpad/t-series/t440p enlists them. No technical details or any other insider info, just names only. Visit this page or see attached screenshot with highlighted areas.

There are no doubts in existence of L- and X-Series machines. My curiosity is about T-Series that spreads this year in broad range of marked niches: from ultrabooks (T440s) through work horses (T440/T540) up to the ultimate mobile workstations (T440p, I suppose):
    * T440s, as we know it, is a strong competitor to X1C;
    * T440p/T540p, as we suggest it, would be strong competitors to W540.

That's interesting! Not the X-, W-, L-Series machines this year

I'm actually thinking thatsince Lenovo is slimming down with the new design, The T440 won't be on par with the T430, but the T440p will make up for it.

    T430->T440p

Interesting will be a X240(t) to compete with the Sony duo 13, Samsung ativ Q, Asus transformer book. And not a single mention of it. Lead Org said it will be discontinued, but that will be another BIG mistake of this brand.

Aren't you comparing apples to oranges, huh? X240 will be a regular laptop with the FullHD touch screen at best, there might be no tablet mode in X240 at all.

Regarding X240t I'm completely with you -- see my post http://forum.notebookreview.com/len...o-website-ips-screen-1080p-9.html#post9280149 -- killing X240t does not make much sense to me and incredibly upsets me.
