Nothing comes close to the 840 EVO IMHO -- I have the 1TB version.
-
The best deal for a 250GB sized SSD right now IMO is the Intel 530 series, which can be had for $160 on Amazon. I'd trust the reliability of an Intel drive over a Samsung drive, but obviously YMMV and for higher-capacity SSDs the Samsung is great value.
-
Thanks again Pipsqueak... Im leaning towards throwing my own SSD in since Ill be doing a clean install anyways. Huge bummer about 840 Pro... its what I was hoping to throw into mine as well. 840 EVO looks interesting as well, but would liek to stay MLC as well. Anyone try the Sandisk SSDs... those look like they are well rated too.
-
No good reason to avoid MLC (TLC) with the Samsung 840 EVO -- rated life is far beyond normal service life, backed by 3 year warranty, and excellent experience in the field, both performance and reliability. Highly recommended.iofthestorm likes this.
-
Is the EVO a faster more reliable drive than the regular 840?
-
Reportedly it has the same AUO panel as the HP 840 G1 you tried out.
-
Nice! Thanks Sterodude!
Thanks JNAVAS... i think Im going to grab an EVO 512 for about $325 online. For roughly $100 more I get a faster drive with double the space! Now I just need to confirm I want the T440s over the T440p, haha
-
If I had to decide between 2 brands they'd be Plextor or Samsung. The non-pro Samsung drives are very good but because they are TLC they have lower longevity and inferior random write performance. Your Samsung 830 has legendary endurance btw - It'll outlast an 840 non-pro or EVO by a mile.
-
Yes, fair enough.. I hadn't seen that the EVO was such an improvement over the plain 840.
This is subjective but again I agree, in real life it's probably not going to be an issue. -
In theory, it's much less reliable than old 840 due to Turbo Write. In reality, most people won't see that day coming anyway.
-
The 840 EVO is actually as reliable during its service life.
What's different is a shorter service life, but one that's still far longer than the useful life,
and thus not an issue. Reliability and service life are different things. -
Crucial M500s certainly come close in price and performance, especially larger drives (480-960GB).
-
It's not only about wear. With Turbo Write there's more read/write happening and more things can go wrong. It also increases the possible of recovery after power loss because data stay in a non-final state for much longer. Even though the controller can try to recover, it's very hard to predict what will happen during a non-graceful shutdown.

I know that comparison of Thinkpad T440s vs. Latitude E7440 has been mentioned here a few times, but with more user experience of the two machines, I was hoping to get a more accurate input:
I have a T440s on order with estimated ship date of 12/17 for $1191 (pre-tax). Here are the key specs:

Processor Intel Core i7-4600U on MB
Selectable Warranty 1 Year Depot or Carry-in

I just figured out that I can order a Latitude E7440 from Dell Business Outlet for $1049 (also pre-tax) shipped in a few days with these specs:
Dell Outlet Latitude E7440
Processor: Intel Core 4th Generation i7-4600U Processor (non-Vpro)
Windows 8 Pro 64
128 GB mSATA Solid State Caching Card
Internal English Dual Pointing Keyboard (Backlit)

Scratch & Dent
65W AC Adapter

25V Power Cord
8 GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (4GBx2) Memory
Dell Wireless 1601 (WiGig) 802.11a/b/g/n/ad + Bluetooth 4.0 LE
4 Cell 45W/HR Battery
3 Year Basic Hardware Service with 3 Year NBD Limited Onsite Service After Remote Diagnosis
The Dell system is a scratch & dent refurb which I personally don't mind since my laptops will be "scratch & dent" after a few weeks anyway thanks to my kids, but what got my eyes with this system was the 3-year warranty. I also have some concern on the new touchpad of T440s. The dell system comes with 2 upgradable ram slots for up to 16GB ram (and I already have a 1.35V 8GB module) and it has a 128GB mSATA SSD. The size and portability of the systems look very similar to me too (T440s: 13.03x8.89x0.80 and 3.5 lb. vs. EE7440: 13.2x9.1x0.80 and 3.6 lb).
So, is there any reason why I should keep the T440s order and not get the Latitude? -
Beyond the normal things in the Thinkpad's favor, the one thing I note from that Dell is the relatively small battery. The regular battery in the T440s is nearly 50% larger. As I've reported here, I think the new trackpad is really excellent, and the only complaint I could see is if you are a die-hard track point user, but then you wouldn't be considering a Dell in any case.
I also think 128gb is just too small for your main drive these days. It might work ok for a while, but I think you'll be fighting it sooner or later. If you intend to upgrade the drive in the T440s, drop the cache drive and save another $50. -
A little side note with regards to the Samsung EVO vs Pro discussion. They just updated the Magician software today and added "RAPID mode" support specifically to the Pro model; I received the update today because I use the Pro model in my desktop. I am going to wait a while before getting an SSD for the T440s until they fix the Pro model issues or at least verify if the problem really exists or not. Worst case I would eventually just get the EVO model. I would also like to see if someone can remove the base of the T440s without breaking any tabs, along with any instructions on how they did, above and beyond Lenovo's instructions which apparently are not foolproof. I saw it took one person 30 minutes to remove it........what a ridiculous design.
-
4 cell (which does not stick out) has 45/47 Wh so is of exactly the same capacity as the 2 basic batteries in T440s. It gives about 5,5-6 h of work with wifi on
-
1. Non-graceful shutdown can be a problem with any storage technology.
2. TurboWrite uses non-volatile flash memory (in SLC mode), more robust than RAM buffering.
3. There's no evidence 840 EVO is any less reliable than other mainstream SSD products. -
What are the chances we ever get a t440s with one of the slightly stronger ulv procs?
-
It's an absolute pain to do. Get some of these and grit your teeth is my best advice! I'm not in a hurry to do it again..

I was having issues with my laptop disconnecting form the router (AC card) and did everything (restore, update driver) what fixed it for me was to just do a factory reset on the router and go from there. Sometime to try if all else fails.
-
This happened to me on my T440p with the same card. But I was able to fix it by updating drivers (not using the ones on Lenovo's site).

Weird, the Notebookcheck review says 34Wh. Review Dell Latitude E7440 Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Maybe it's different in Germany? -
No, there are 2 types - 3 cell (34 Wh) and 4 cell (47 Wh, at list mine says that
), which is of exactly the same size. The listed one has the 4-cell

My T440s finally shipped today (12/10). Ordered it on 11/18 from Lenovo Germany, payment via bank transfer went through on 11/22. Still 3-6 days until UPS gets it here, can't wait. Just hope I can live with the backlight bleed. Everyone seems to report it so it must be worse than usual

500GB EVO and pry tools are already waiting. -
There isn't much backlight bleed on mine at all, and it is only noticeable when booting - haven't seen it when playing games or watching films (including letter boxed films).
My 500GB EVO arrived today, so tonight I get to find out how hard removing the bottom actually is
-
what tools are you using. I got a precision/jewelry screwdriver kit with screwdrivers that are really small. I figure that tiny flat head would work to pry. Anyone agree?
-
The only pry tools I'd use are those made of plastic so they don't damage the cases of electronics like sharp-edged metal tools would.
-
I bought a set of mobile phone repair tools with small screw drivers and several pry tools of different shapes made of plastic.

Every Geek should have one of these iFixIt Pro Tool Kit
Make a great Xmas gift too

Was meant to ship today/tomorrow... delayed till January 3. What the hell
-
What's your configuration
-
i7 4600u/12gb/512gb SSD, FHD touch, AC wireless, 6 cell rear battery. I'd be fine with waiting if I actually knew what was going on, instead of being told to email the customer support who never reply!
-
When did you order? ANd I would call and not email.
-
my estimate shipment was on the 9th of Dec
but it has not been shipped yet and no email, I am starting to freak out
also can anyone upload a video of upgrading ram and hdd
-
Hum, mine was supposed to ship yesterday, it's been a week on "Released to manufacturing".
Shouldn't take that long to assemble it, it's just the basic model with an i7... -
check to see if they charged your credit card, I think once it is shipped, they take the money from your account
so if you find yourself $1k+ poorer then they have shipped the machine
-
I ordered on November 26. Last time I called they told me that I needed to email them. I told the rep I needed to get a pen and they proceeded to mumble out an email address before I was ready...
-
When mine shipped (ordered in the first week) it actually did the same thing, showed a ten day delay on the day it was supposed to ship. Then it shipped the next day. So who knows, you might get lucky. Or Lenovo's shipping department is on crack. One of those is probably true.
-
Folks, mine has showed "Released to manufacturing" right from the day I ordered (25th Nov). My initial ship date was 4th December and then they delayed it to 16th December. I did not get any email informing me of the delay. They simply updated the status on the website and I would have never known about the delay had I not gone to check it on the website. Lenovo really needs to get their act together.
-
Mine was supposed to ship yesterday and I also got a 10 day delay. Very common thing with Lenovo; just look through the various threads. To make matters worse I ordered mine on Black Friday, so I suspect they were swamped with a ton of orders that day. When it gets here it gets here.
What is really weird is that my credit card is showing two temporary authorizations for the full price of the laptop on two different dates. I only ordered one laptop, so hopefully they don't charge and send me two. -
Not yet.
They just delayed the shipping date to dec. 20 =/ damn lenovo, this is such a bummer... -
I ordered mine on 11/25, was supposed to ship on 12/4 but got delayed by 12 days to 12/16. I just checked my email and it has been shipped, a week later than my initial ship date.
-
You are lucky. I have the exact same dates as you (and was delayed till 12/16), however, when I check the status online, it still shows "Released to manufacturing". Sigh.
-
damn, mine is delayed to 12/20, the estimate delivery date is not 12/31 instead of 12/17
I hate how Lenovo handles the shipping for their products -
I guess yours might ship soon too. Keep checking your email.
-
I've just had the third hold placed on my account. I'm assuming they put holds on periodically to see if your account still has the money. Because they're taking so long to ship they need to place a heck load of holds!
I ordered around the Black Friday week so I also suspect it has overwhelmed them. -
How long does it usually take to get it after it's been shipped?
