The rectangular power adapter was first introduced with the 2012 X1 Carbon (the first generation). It was introduced as the new plug since the old round barrel shape adapter was too thick for the newer ThinkPad systems...

This is my first Thinkpad and I'm a bit annoyed by some weird glitches. The WiFi card has dropped out randomly several times while streaming video but most irritating is the sound card. It doesn't auto-detect when I insert headphones. It continues to play sound through the speakers. I have to go in and manually change the output by selecting the headphones as the default device. Sometimes the default device is already headphones, but still no sound, so I have to select the *speakers* as default and then the headphones will magically work. If I shut the lid on the laptop while headphones are still plugged in, upon resume, neither speakers nor headphones will work even though in the sound dialog box one or the other is selected and the green meter is moving indicating sound is playing. Trying to use skype is maddening too as every time I have to go into the tools and manually select external headphones and mic. For some reason the video always defaults to "privacy mode" as well, which disables the video camera- even though I keep disabling that feature.
All in all, a lot of tedious tinkering is required to get the very basic (and taken for granted) functions of video and audio to work properly. Looked online for a solution, but didn't turn anything up. Will probably contact customer support soon- I just don't want to have to send it in, so I've delayed that option.
Has anyone else had similar issues? -
I would like to run two separate monitors AND the T450s monitor, so all three. I currently have the Pro Dock and a displayport-to-HDMI adapter connected to one monitor.
Can I just connect a 2nd monitor to the notebook's mini-displayport (I also have an HDMI adapter for that)? Or do I need to get a DP-to-dual-HDMI adapter or other kind of splitter? Anything else I should know? Thanks. -
This is for all you other lenovo buyers.
I have the following Lenovos X201, T420(for employees), T420s, Thinkpad Yoga and now the following T450s
Intel Core i7-5600U
2 x 3cell 23.2Wh Rear
14.0 FHD IPS WWAN
Intel 7265AC+BT 2x2
LTE Sierra EM7345
720p HD Camera
512GB_SSD SATA3
12GB(4/MB+8/DIMM) DDR3L_1600
Fingerprint Reader
Windows 8.1 pro 64
3 y onsite warranty
Plus Dock USB Pro
Lenovo has changed three machines due to crappy AUO screen.
- The first had great contrast and colour but started flickering across the screen, particularly noticeable on dark Visual Studio
- Second was very dim and the "white" was darker than the first and off white.(Also they did not align the hand rest cover and was sticking out with a cutting feel along the edge)
- Third only a few days ago is now flickering when I use it in mid brightness - the white is not the best but I can live with it.
Will be calling tomorrow to send back and ask for my money, as they do not deserve it and increasingly my precious time - I'm not trying to be dramatic but it is not easy to pack, send and rebuild machines for a small analytics business.
(by the way they had two goes with my Yoga but I thought it was just a statistical fluke)
Bye bye Lenovo...I have no idea who to buy next but will not put up with this. -
We just received our first T450s. This machine has the FHD IPS display and an SSD. It's running Windows 7. I use a T530 with an FHD screen daily, and, with both machines set to 125% scaling in windows, setting default zoom to 110% in Chrome pretty well evens things out. The viewing angles on the T450s are great, as expected, but the 'factory' colors are a little off (I tried the ICC file referenced in the notebookcheck T450s review and that wasn't much better)... probably this is easily fixed. My T530 is just a bit brighter than the T450s at the highest setting, but they both get brighter than I ever need.
The T450s has a i5-5200U while my T530 has an i7-3632QM. I ran a quick browser benchmark ( http://web.basemark.com/) using the latest Chrome on each machine, and I was surprised to get around 5200 on the T450s and more like 4800 on my T530 - this doesn't quite jive with the single-thread performance reported at https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html, but I ran the test a couple of times and the results were pretty consistent.
I prefer the bigger touchpad on the T450s. It's great to have the buttons back. Both keyboards are good, though I find the T450's to be just a bit less crisp than the T530. I can't detect any difference between the trackpoints on the two machines.
As expected, battery life on the T450s looks to be great - I imagine I could get nearly double the life I'm seeing on my T530 (and that's with the 3-cell battery in the T450 and a new 50Whr 6-cell battery in the T530).
The built-in speakers on the T450s are better than on the T530.
I'll try some more serious benchmarks later, but generally the T450s 'feels' just as quick as the T530 when doing normal things (like browsing, watching videos, etc.). I think I could probably live with the T450s as my main machine (I do electronic design and software development). If I had to fly a lot (thankfully I don't), I'd definitely get one.huntnyc likes this. -
I ran Novabench on both machines. The graphics scores are pretty surprising... I never would have thought the HD5500 graphics could outperform the NVS-5400M, but other sites seem to confirm this: http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-NVS-5400M-vs-Intel-HD-5500-Mobile-095-GHz/m7907vsm16570.
I believe Novabench uses multiple cores, so the CPU numbers seem reasonable (the 3632QM is 4C/8T, the 5200U is 2C/4T).
The SSD in the T530 is an 850 EVO 1TB. In the 450s it's a Samsung MZ7LN256HCHP-000 (Opal-2 256GB SSD).

One more data-point... If I open a moderately complex solidworks model in E-Drawings (same version on both machines), the NVS-5400M is dramatically faster (in terms of rotating, zooming, etc.) than the HD5500. So maybe Novabench isn't actually using the NVS when it runs the benchmark (and I'm not sure what that link userbenchmark link is reporting). Or maybe Solidworks is using a different driver that's better-optimized for the NVS-5400.

As I read it the t450s is pretty much identical to my t440s.
Unfortunately mine has a smartcard slot.
Meaning that it doesn't have the 3rd m.2 slot.
Wish I'd known this before.
Now I'm in trouble because I want to add 3/4G to it.
Which is not possible because the primary m.2 slots are now occupied by my boot drive and Wifi.
And the disc bay holds a 2TB old style drive.
Wondering if it's worth it ordering the parts or that ordering the t450s instead might be the simpler solution. Going to set me back at least 70 usd but can't be sure I have selected all the right parts.
Removing the smartcard reader will definitely leave a hole... how's that on the non-smartcard models?
(and kind of thinking it would be great if I could find some who's actually ordering a t450s who can get these parts for like 10 dollars if I see the configurator). -

I just made these updates this morning - so I'm not sure if this solves the issue or not. It's possible that the above changes were overkill to fix the issue; one or a combo of the above may work for the WiFi drop issue - but I was attempting to optimize the wireless card and speed at the same time. I will report back in a few days with results.huntnyc likes this. -

Does anybody have a good case or bag recommendation, for the T450s with the 6-cell battery that sticks out?
-
Can anybody with an Ultra Dock comment on the maximum resolution they can output from the HDMI port? Would it be able to support a 2560x1080 display at 60Hz? It says HDMI 1.4 so technically it should, unless they've artificially capped it...

I think lenovos quality control is getting very bad.
My first t450s had a lg screen with very bad backlight bleed, lots of dead pixel. Also had a faulty / loose trackpad click on the left side.
My second t450s came with a auo panel which was very very grainy to point most text looked blurry. Also had a loose trackpad click.
Now awaiting my third machine to come and see if that's any better. -
Hi guys, i'm configuring my t450s online and i'm wondering if this screen
Display FHD 14" 1920x1080 IPS with WWAN
is a touchscreen version or not. It's the default monitor that come with the i7 cpu.
I'd prefer the antiglare version without touchscreen. Have you got more infos about that?
Thanks -
Unless it says touchscreen on it, it won't be touchscreen.

Just wanted to post after having my T450s for a ocuple of months now. It is indeed a worthy replacement to my steady reliable x220. Has been excellent so far.
On setting it up I had questions about whether I could put in both my m.2 SSD and larger HDD at the same time and then run Lenovo USB recovery disk successfully having it install on the SSD without problems. And, it did so giving me the option to choose the drive on which to install the recovery image.
On Sunday, my machine accidentally fell to the carpet and the extended battery came out breaking off a small piece of the latch that holds the battery in the laptop. The battery still fit but was somewhat looser than before. I called Lenovo support not thinking they could help me with such an issue because the battery was purchased as an accessory when I bought the laptop from Lenovo but was not really under accidental warranty that I have on the machine. But, by Tuesday I had a new extended battery after following their instructions to send an email to another department to confirm warranty on the battery. I just wanted to let all know here about the excellent service unexpected but grateful to receive it. -
I can't seem to find an option to ad the GT 940M on the Lenovo website. Is this no longer available?

Hi Guys,
I have a brand new Lenovo T450s with Intel HD 5500. All drivers are the latest one (Graphics one: 10.18.15.4256)
Most games (Wolrd of Tanks, Counter Strike) work only in windowed mode. When I make them full screen, they drop to the tray minimized and cant open them anymore. Must be a grapics driver / setting issue, as this does not happen when the driver is uninstalled ... but then certainly you cant play games due to low FPS.
Anyone have an advice where to look for solution?
Also, where can I report an offical lenovo suppor tticket on this? The one from the home page takes me to IBM support and there is no such option ....
Many thanks,
P. -

Hello,
Could anyone wih a FHD AUO non touchscreen panel could extract the content of ' HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet'?
I replaced my HD+ TN panel with a FHD AUO B140HAN01.2, but brightness settings is not available!
The product name in the panel EDID seems not to be in the lenovo white-list.
Thanks -
Hello, tell me if i got it right : only the FHD screen is GOOD, the HD+ screen is bad?
PS: What's difference between T450 & T450s version exactly appart 1RAM slot..? -
I have a T450s and with the 512GB SSD drive. I would like to add a m.2 SSD to add some extra storage space. I see lots of posts about using the m.2 slots for HDD cache or as a boot drive. I'm just looking for extra storage space. Since I have the 2.5" SSD drive, I would assume that I don't have the m.2 slot under the battery (unless I add some hardware for the socket) but there is still the m.2 slot next ot the WiFi.
Slightly ignorant question -- since folks use the m.2 slots as boot drives, can I assume it can just as easily be used as just a extra drive (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). Also, if I get the hardware to set up the 2nd m.2 slot, is there any advantage to using one m.2 slot over the other? -
I use a 500GB SSD and two M.2 128GB SSD's.... all for different OS's... no problem.

Thanks DanielNTX --
If you don't mind my asking, what kind of m.2 SSD did you use? -

Lenovo ( in US ) is extending Cyber Monday Door busters, and T450s is on the list. I just bought one last night.
I was waiting for the release T460s, but decided it is going to be too costly when just released. Besides, I need to save money on the Retro Thinkpad. -
I am currently using Macbook Pro, I miss Thinkpad so much and want to come back. Just worry about quality control of T450s.
-
I'm thinking of buying this machine -- I have a configuration of 1080p display and 8 GB of RAM for under $900. However, my main concern is that it comes with an Intel Core i5-5200U Processor, which is a dual-core processor. Maybe I haven't been keeping up with the laptop scene enough recently, but shouldn't these be obsolete? I'm replacing my last laptop (which broke), which was cheaper at the time and had a quad-core processor, and it was from the summer of 2012.
-
It really depends on your needs. For typical usage like Office, Media and Internet, a dual core will offer performance aplenty. There are some applications like video encoding, modeling and heavy Photoshop, not light Photoshop, that hit the processor hard and you'll need the extra oomph. If those fits what you'll be doing, then perhaps the two extra cores are worth it. If it's just an all-arounder, then two cores is more than enough. Also, for most uses it's the drive, as the computer waits for data to be found and read, that is more likely to make your system feel fast or slow. This is why SSDs rule, due to extremely low seek times compared to a platter drive.
-
I understand user preferences go into concern when buying a laptop, but that still shouldn't mean we ignore relative performance of different machines. For instance, a similar price exists with the ASUS N551VW-FW238T ( https://www.lambda-tek.com/ASUS-N551VW-FW238T~sh/B2393660), but its specs are so much better than the T450s. Really the only advantage the Lenovo ultrabook has is its battery life, but what good is that if the performance is going to be so slow and choppy.
Yes, my primary usage will not be gaming, but to say the Lenovo is justified for offering lower specs without a drop in price would be like saying the Jitterbug phone should be about as expensive as a smartphone because it is designed for just making phone calls. -
-
I appreciate your assistance.. However, upon finding out that my T450s was actually going to have only 4-6 hours for both batteries combined, I decided to cancel my order. There is much better value out there for $950 (including the ridiculous $70 tax). I can only hope Lenovo does cancel it..
-
Asus doesn't have trackpoint. That is one thing for buying T or X. Too bad that good trackpoint with 3 physical buttons is so rare. Even in Dell it is too heavy to move and HP has only 2 buttons.
-
Nor does it have near as good a keyboard as the t450s. There's nothing that competes with it with similar thickness. Just awesome to type on and ruins you for the wafer thin ultrabook keyboards

Bought my T450s in Oct and the build quality of this machine is not what I expected. The plastic screen bezel is glued to the screen with some cheap adhesive that keeps coming off. The bottom cover is made of some plastic that chips very easily. Anyone have a similar experience with the adhesive on the screen peeling off?

Is the touch pad on the t450s and t450 the same ?

can someone confirm -

I just got my T450s but there are 2 problems with it. One is a high-pitched fan noise in the upper left of the keyboard. I dont know if it is supposed to be like that but its kind of annoying. The other thing is that I only get about 6 hours of battery with the bigger battery included. I am going to write to support and ask if they cannot take it back and exchange it (maybe for a newer version).
-
You might want to see if there's a BIOS update to fix the fan. That happened with my X200, but call support too and see what they've got to say.
-
anyone having an issue where the machine will not power on? Working one minute, the next no power, lights or anything? We've run in to several instances of this with the machines we recently purchased at work. Only thing that will bring power back is to remove the battery and click the reset button. If that doesnt work, open it up, disconnect the CMOS and internal battery, click reset and then try again. Usually that will work, but its a pain in the butt and not something thats easily accomplished by some of our non-technical remote employees

I have purchased a second hand t450s, and upgrading my old x301. Just like to share some thoughts about the machine.
My one is a matte touch screen, which should be the top configuration in terms of the screen. I found the brightness is a bit low, especially when the screen is set below 50% brightness. The matte finish does help to reduce the reflection, however the way it is implemented, it feels that there is another screen on top of the screen, and the image is not that clear.
I think the construction of the machine is very good. From my observation, the bottom base is made of a single piece of metal, the screen lip cover is similar, and the top cover where keyboard is mounted is made of metal skeleton with a plastic cover on top. -
Hi, I am a happy owner of a T420s for last four years but have recently purchased a T450s (i5-5300U 12GB RAM, 256 SSD). With the T420s I took out the optical drive and bought a caddy and slotted in a crucial 256 M4 SSD. All good. I was looking to do the same with the t450s however it seems to be architectured differently and there's no room for a Crucial M4.
I am aware that I can add in a M.2 2242 SSD but I was wondering if anyone has done this and what make you used. Looking on Amazon UK I read some reviews for the Transcend M.2 2242 SSD that said they would NOT WORK for the T450s but were fine for the T440s.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-SATA3-Solid-State-Drive/dp/B00KLTPUG4
Are there any other makes out there that work okay for the T450s?
Cheers

In case anyone cares I did find two manufacturers: ADATA and myDigital.
I just need to find a way of purchasing the following product ideally in UK or US that ships internationally:

Hello People!
Did anybody have particular issues with the touchpad of this machine? I purchased the machine mid 2015, and by early 2016 my touchpad wouldn't do a physical click anymore, like something being stuck under the hinge - except it did bend down, just not click.
Roughly 2 months in since getting the touchpad replaced I am having an issue with the touchpad again, this time it registering double clicks every time the touchpad moves -> hence one double click on down-press, and one on release. Which is rather annoying. Since being abroad for 6 months and rather unfamiliar with the local support procedures, I'll probably just wait until I am back home with my machine.
edit: No, I haven't been spilling stuff over the machine, not even water...
Also I have the impression, that when my touchpad got replaced, the replacer broke off a couple of hooks holding the cases together. My casing is now loose on the left front edge.Last edited: Sep 12, 2016
