Uh does the w530 have a typo?

15.6" FHD (1900 x 1080) LED Backlit AntiGlare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready

shouldn't it be 1920? So the 1080p, K2000M, 6-cell battery version of the w530 could be had for just under 1400... hopefully some reviews will come out before then and I'll also be able to see what Apple is offering.

Haven't seen any good 14" panels yet, so I won't hold by breath. Wouldn't bother with the dual core i7 since it's not significantly faster than the i5, especially for the money

    same HD+ panel as T420s

don't have a shipping Optimus one, the early demo unit we have got a pre-release BIOS that cannot switch to discreet, couldn't get a score out. HD4000 scores 6226 on 3dmark 06

Same reason they'd want one on a T430 or W530 - driving extra monitors, CAD, boosting performance from graphics card-accelerated programs ( Photoshop, Flash, etc.), light gaming, etc. Are you also against Optimus in the T430, and if not, is it just the price of including it in the T430s you are against? There might be a battery hit, but you should be able to disable it in the BIOS, no?

really attempted to buy the w530 now instead of waiting for dell. However, I did recall people complaining about the noise of w520. Is that a common problem, or solved?

I'm talking about edge detection etc. Would be a shame to get one of these and have a compromise a couple of months down the line...

Also I can't find about the Lenovo Pay-as-you-go Broadband plans anywhere.

    Links and info please..?

"Lenovo Mobile Access" from ThinkPad Professional-Grade Laptop PCs | Computers | Compare | Lenovo | United States (US)

"This pay-as-you-go wireless WAN (WWAN) mobile broadband service enables online access anywhere, anytime, with flexible pricing and no contract needed. Perfect for travelers."

    Also slides 38, 39, 40 from:

    http://www.notteb.com/html/pds_update/2012_new_tp_intro.pptx

I spent some time on the phone with Lenovo sales reps this morning, trying to nail this down. On the order site, Lenovo offers both Verizon and AT&T Gobi 4000 LTE modules for the X230. I tried to find out which module offers Lenovo Mobile Access. The only answer I got was "either one." Several reps gave me the same answer. I hope they know what they are talking about...

I ended up ordering an X230 with the Verizon module. We shall see...

If anyone finds out any additional info, please post details. Thanks.

The Intel HD 4000 is supposed to support 3 LCD panels. If it does indeed support three external LCD panels (probably with a dock), then most people will have little need to move to Optimus for four external LCD panels.

The extra bump in GPU processing power provided by the NVIDIA NVS 5200 (which comes in 1GB or 2GB flavors on the lenovo.com) is also not needed by most people.

I know if I buy a T430 or T430S, I won't be buying the Optimus model this time around. I have zero need for a discrete processor on this class machine.

The same is true for any Ultrabook I buy.

A portable workstation is a different story.

is there a big difference? between this configuration?

Question about the keyboard choice for the new lineup. I'm configuring a T530 and it gives me the choice between:

    1) Keyboard - US English
    2) Keyboard Backlit - US English

Does this mean that choice 1 = the traditional keyboard? or does it mean the new chiclet keyboard without backlight?

It means the new chiclet keyboard without the backlight. There will be no option (by any means) to return to the traditional keyboard.

Just confirmed with Lenovo sales support that the mSATA port in the T430s is SATA-III.

[EDIT] Talked to two different Lenovo technical support reps who both confirmed that the mSATA port is SATA-III. This didn't make sense, though, since the chipset only supports two SATA-III ports, which would mean the ultrabay would have to be SATA-II. Finally called a third rep and discovered that the reps are not savvy enough to differentiate between SATA-III and SATA at 3.0gbps. So, sadly, the mSATA port on the T430s is just SATA-II (at 3.0gbps).

Now, though, I wonder if the X230's mSATA port is SATA-III, since it doesn't have the Ultrabay that would use the second port...

At first I thought you were full of it. But you are right. If you select the i7 config on the T430S or the T430, the NVIDIA Optimus isn't available.

I guess there are two possible explanations. One could be that the CTO site is in error. The other possibility is that both the i7 and Optimus exceeds the 90W AC adapter and battery thresholds so they would have to create a new AC adapter between the 90 and the 135W.

    Really odd.

I thought Ivy Bridge was supposed to be more power efficient, not less.

Someone pointed out the 80% recharge option now on the T430S. That could account for not having the i7 and optimus in the mix at the same time while trying to recharge everything in 30 minutes.

It's expensive because it's mSATA, not a standard SSD drive. It fits in the mSATA/WWAN slot, so you can keep the traditional hard drive for non-system files.

Lenovo will gouge you if you let them. They want $1100 on the W530 to take it to 32GB of RAM.

I can buy 4x8GB DDR3 SoDIMMs for less than $200. I refuse to give Lenovo $900 for no apparent reason.

The same is typically true on storage prices.

Ok, so I'm customizing a T430s and just noticed this:

So the default config can be reduced in price by $50 by including Office!? That option doesn't include a license, does it? Anyone see this before? I know the bundling and licensing deals are crazy, but this!?

Looks like a pricing error as the Home and Business version is the mid tier version of Office 2010, above the Home and Student version which for some reason is more expensive.

Better buy quick before they notice!

Apparently, for the T430s, discrete graphics is $330... I'm holding off for now. Will most likely settle for Intel graphics on this one instead. Looking through the B&N site, my minimum configuration (HD screen, Intel WiFi) is approximately $900, including sales tax.

Hehe, I ordered and it went though. Hopefully they won't cancel the order due to that.

I intend to blank my hard drive. I might be inclined to reinstall Office if it's a full, licensed, non-trial version. I assume they don't provide a disk, so does anyone know if it's possible to transfer the key to a new install?

I did the same thing. Ordered through Lenovo's student site, but at about $1,000 (including a ton of little upgrades but excluding tax), I think I did pretty well.

I don't have the T430S so I can't say for certain but I think the answer is yes.

Unless lenovo changed the bay, it's still 7mm and the Sammy should work just fine.

The T430s is lighter and thinner, about .87lb and .2in respectively. Also, the T430 can be equipped with NVS5400 while the s model can only go up to NVS5200. Other than that they should be about the same

    30
I prefer the T430 as it has the 9-cell battery and could get it about $100 cheaper. I know that you can add the 3-cell battery in the T430s but you would not be able to add an additional hard drive. I do not care about the graphics card at all because I wanna get the Intel 4000 only. So do you think I should go with the T430s or the T430. I am still confused about why I should not just go with the T430? Is the weight and height differences practically significant?

Also, where did you get the dimensions and weight for the T430s? The only website I could find it at is Lenovo Australia and it does not give specific measures (ht: 21.2 - 26 mm and wt starts at 1.7 kg)!

Does anyone have any idea as to why there's no 256gb SSD option listed yet? Right now the highest is 180gb.
