Well the W520 is confirmed that if you did not order RAID, you will never be able to set it up. I would assume the same applied to the W530 based on the configuration options online. You might be able to see if they can set you up with a RAID capable motherboard by phone without ordering RAID. For most users, RAID isn't a big deal though. It would just be nice if they enabled it on all configurations...

    Thinklight ftw.

couple of things i noticed there:

    1. No thinklight for tablet (i thought they included that this time for some reason)

    2. Full-size displayport for tablet (only computer in the thinkpad line to keep that, everything else has moved to mini dp)

Funny you mention art. I am going to an exhibit this weekend. :D

    Ok, peace.

    Is it happy hour yet?

And by the way, I really only frequent a few forums. This area, the Samsung forum area here, and the Lenovo forums at lenovo.com. I'll look at the Dell and HP forums if I am interested in a model but I usually lose interest pretty fast in their stuff.

I occasionally pop into thinkpads.com or dslreports.com, but that's about it.

The guy in the vide states at the end that they also have an unboxing vide for T430 but could not find it on Youtube or their videos section. Any idea where this could be?

802.11n is plenty fast for the time being. 802.11ac is a set of improvements to the N standard, is going to be only marginally faster in practice, is backwards compatible with N radios, and isn't going to be supported by anything outside of your house for at least a year. No need to hold off on any purchases to wait for an N radio. Lenovo likely won't have them anyways until Intel releases a Centrino chipset for 802.11ac.

I will need to connect my ordered T430 to an HDTV and to get the sound on the monitor, I guess I will have to get a mini-DP to HDMI converter but Lenovo does not offer it. Do you think one should also have both the mini-DP to VGA (available) and to DVI (not available) converters or only one of them?

There is no mini DP on the T420. I assume you mean T430.

I'd recommend buying these types of adapters at monoprice.com. You can save a small fortune.

    See http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2 for instance.

Prolly time to start a T430 Owners thread.

Buy what you need, and it doesn't have to be from Lenovo. These are standardized ports and transfer protocols. Buy one from Amazon that has good reviews and does what you need it to do, and you should be fine.

I'm really interested in a W530.. so for those of you who get it, I'd love if it you could post your impressions here when you get it. :)

So there is actually no way to do what I want? If you have two drives in there, they *have* to be RAIDed?

I just wanted to have two drives in there. One 7200 RPM drive in the bay as my "data" drive that I write a lot to. Then I'd have an SSD in the main HDD slot that would hold the OS and applications. They would be completely separate from one another.

your application is fine. Two hard drives not in raid will work fine, with one as a primary and one as a secondary.

what you cant do is order a non-raid laptop and then later set up two drives in raid (presumably you would do this because lenovo charges too much for their hard drives/the drives you want to raid are not available from lenovo).

Oh okay cool. So to confirm, I could order without raid... then order a hdd bay and just slap my platter drive in there and be good to go, right?

Yeah I'd never order raid as it jacks up the price so much and I already have spare platter drives. Actually I'd probably just use the 320 gig drive that comes with the laptop as my data drive and put my SSD in the main slot. :)

I am getting T430 and my question is about purchasing the docking station. Should I get the one with 90W adapter that is perfectly compatible with this model or should I get the one with the 170W adapter in case in the future I got a different model (though this should not happen in 2-3 years) like the W530 that requires higher power? The way I think about it is that you do not carry the docking station around with you so it may not matter if the adapter is huge (though it will occupy larger office space) and also the one with the 170W adapter is only $20 more expensive, thoughts?

Also, I just found that they are leaving the DP on the dock while changing this to mini-DP on the machines. Why this confusion of different port types?!

Anyway, I was wondering: does anyone know a part number for the DVD Multi recordable that I did NOT take during my order process...and/or any compatible part numbers (that are also 12.7mm)?

Also, with respect to the whole process of threading, I know we don't just willy-nilly create a thread.

So, I'm proposing that whoever chooses to create the W530 thread, consider calling it "W530 beta-testers' thread", in honor of all of our brethren in the W520 threads who went "in" ahead of us and cleared the way.

New owner threads are exciting times but may I suggest whoever starts the thread to maybe add an useful landing page about the model in question? I think the least thing we want is a replica of the W520 thread where it can be pretty daunting to get relevant information for new users over time, especially after 702 pages!

Sorry if this has already been said, but looking at the T530 configurations available, it looks like FHD is standard?
This looks like a typo. I doubt that Lenovo will hold itself to it but it may be worth trying

So guys... The keyboard connector on the W530 looks like it's in the same place as the W520: http://i.imgur.com/nqUtt.png

Would've done a Photoshop difference layer, except they're slightly different perspectives.

Methinks we should be good to go on the replace.

Seems like they have reintroduced a more solid backplate. Thats very nice, maybe that means "No more keyboard flex"

I assume your talking about putting a w520 keyboard in a w530? I don't think that it will work properly, as the keyboard mappings will not be correct. It would likely require a BIOS hack.

But that's still huge news; that ( at least for the X series) the different keyboards DO physically fit and they CAN be used, though in a rudimentary form (until someone puts out a BIOS mod, that is; which, I'm guessing, is about two months out).

Can anyone confirm that the new dock with USB 3.0 will still come with regular DP and not the mini-DP? I know it is stated in the description but just wanna make sure since I found it strange they are changing to the mini in the machine itself and not the dock
