My T420 is in the safe hands of the ThinkPad Chinese Production Force (TCPF) since the launch day and my personal guess is that actually my order never went through and that I have been waiting for nothing coming all that period of time but Lenovo ignorant/lying agents could successfully convince me to wait till 3 days after the shipping date but nothing.
I will give them the benefit of doubt and assume that they decided to give my machine extra special care and quality control and that is why it has been delayed. I just hope to see it before the T440 launches with the same crappy display AGAIN! -
Did anyone try the "ThinkPad In-Ear Headphones" before? Do they worth throwing in around $12.00 to get them? Can I use the mic of the iPhone headset instead if I connect it to ThinkPads?
-
I haven't tried the ThinkPad ones specifically, but I'd be very skeptical of the value of any headphones which have a retail price of $12...
-
They are actually $20 but I am getting a discount on them but it is still a low price. I just use them for calls and watching movies when I do not want to bother people around me since they have built in mic and one jack to be compatible with ThinkPads and I also said, you cannot go wrong for that cheap!
-
There are other much better IEM at that price really, it's a rule that all headphones/iems with a built in mic usually have a poor sound quality. But they're cheap enough to make video conferences, just don't expect audiophile quality
-
But I never felt that the iPhone headset with built-in mic has any problem. I consider it a very high quality one. If someone can actually confirm that the iPhone headset should work fine with the ThinkPad including the mic using one jack, I can just use it.
-
It works with the iPhone headset. It's a pretty standard connector actually.
Also, iPod/iPhone earbuds are pretty mediocre. -
The apple IEMs are pretty crappy sound wise. For cheap high quality IEMs, the Monoprice 8320 with sony tips and the JVC marshmellows have been my favorites.
-
Yep, they work fine with all the Thinkpad combined jacks, as far as I've tried. But really, their sound quality is atrocious; it's about the bottom range of "acceptable" to me
-
where do people buy reliable replacement batteries? i've a t420 so i'm not affected by the battery safeguard crap, but are there any recommended sources? i'm looking for a 9 cell.
-
Is there a large performance impact if I buy PC3-10600 (1333 Mhz) instead of PC3-12800 (1600 MHz)? PC3-10600 is much cheaper.
-
Unless you are gaming on integrated graphics, you will see no real life benefit with the "faster" memory. So get the cheaper one.

I am not sure what to say but Lenovo people are both stupid and liers too. My order for the T430 did not ship today after waiting all the week long with estimated day of 6/11 and listening to their lies that it can ship anytime during the week of estimated shipping date. Today, I called and they told me that my ship date moved to 6/20 (?!) and you know what, they do not even give me the right to return it unopened without restocking fees if I decided it is too late by the time I receive it. They also do not care at all with me and could not even offer exceptional expedited shiiping (I know they do not have it but they could do it).
The other stupid thing (though I do not care at all about it but just find it a stupid mind of thinking), they ship everything from the HOLY China even a mice or keyboard or even my f... cheap ear phones. I cannot believe that and people still debate are the Windows PC industry is a good one compared to Apple!!!! -
I do not see much difference in the price if you talking about an additional 4GB or something unless you are upgrading for 32GB.
-
I'd go for the 1600Mhz option. Lenovo uses 1600Mhz RAM for their Thinkpad line, if you install a slower frequency DIMM then you will bottleneck the original one down to 1333Mhz.
-
Lenovo Direct is a disaster, but I suspect most Thinkpads are bought in bulk and through resellers anyway, so they can't care less.
Try Sony. They are more consumer-oriented, have physical stores, ship fast too, and not from China. Prices, looks, upgradeability and all the rest are closer to Apple too. -
It depends on the product and the destination. They do final assembly of some products in other locations (Mexico, for example) and have fulfillment centers in still other places.
Many of the laptops do come from the manufacturer directly though; I remember some of my X series came direct from Wistron. -
Is this turning into a PC v Mac thing? I've got lots of good ammo for that.
Mine has been received.
It took five days from China, once it shipped. It cost just over 1300 dollars, including taxes of 104 dollars.
Now, shouldn't every Lenovo customer have that experience? Yes. Do they? No. I would also say that not all Apple customers are satisfied with Apple...I know one (me) who with several iterations of the same product never got a good one and it was never delivered on time (Not once). -
But $12.00 ear phones or a mouse from China shipping for every single customer, really? Are you kidding me.
-
Would you please do me a favor and check if your W530 throttles on battery? Can you torture it enough till it confesses?
-
Memory bandwidth is pretty much never the bottleneck in a system. If it's the same price, I'd recommend the faster one, otherwise, there is no difference.
-
The FRUs for ThinkPads are now in an extra PDF, which can be found here: Lenovo Support - Parts Database Lookup Some are already up, W530, T530, T430s and T430. X230 is displayed, but there is no file yet.
-
Unless you are using the integrated graphics for gaming, of course.
-
+1 very interested to hear all about this machine!!!!

No 1600x900 for the x230??

can you confirm that the 1900x1080 is a typo and its really 1920 wide?WilyWilly said: ↑Mine has been received.Click to expand...

Yes it's a typo, no one makes a 1900x1080 screen. Lenovo has even fixed it on their order site.mikew3456 said: ↑can you confirm that the 1900x1080 is a typo and its really 1920 wide?Click to expand...

If you've ordered the first screen option (mistakenly annotated as HD 1900x1080), you'll actually receive the HD 1366x768 screen.mikew3456 said: ↑can you confirm that the 1900x1080 is a typo and its really 1920 wide?Click to expand...
You should select the third option if you want the FHD 1920x1080 screen. -
i believe they are talking about the w530 which doesnt have 3 options, hd+ or fhd. my understanding was if you selected fhd "1900x1080" youd get 1920x1080.
either way theyve changed it to 1920x1080. -
^^^ Well, there was this situation at one point:
Either "HD (1366x768)" or "FHD (1920x1080)".exorcistkiller said: ↑I just ordered a T530 with HD screen. On the website it says 15.6" HD (1900 x 1080) LED Backlit AntiGlare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready... Is this HD or FHD?Click to expand...
And the three screen options (for T/W520/530) are usually offered:

for the w530, only the last two are offered

ok i ordered my w530 today thru barnes and noble discount. when i try to check the order status details, everything is blank and it says "Message: Invalid Customer ID". is it because its the weekend?
some more newbie questions:
i plan on upgrading both the RAM and getting an SSD. for the SSD, what do i need? 2.5" size? i was thinking of getting these two:
Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC128B/WW 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Newegg.com - G.SKILL 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-1600C11D-16GSQ
are those correct? -
Yes, the W530 accomodates a 2.5" SSD, so that Samsung will work just fine. The memory is also correct and will work, although you should probably make sure that you actually need 16 GB (8 GB in a 4 GB x2 arrangement is several times cheaper, and is more than enough for most usage patterns).mikew3456 said: ↑i plan on upgrading both the RAM and getting an SSD. for the SSD, what do i need? 2.5" size? i was thinking of getting these two:

and 3x 4gb here:

as for memory, the w530 comes with 4gb, i could just buy another 4gb stick but i dont know if it will be too little. i plan on using a VM or two -
Unfortunately, that's the shi... Lenovo website and it will stay like this forever even after you get your machine. You cannot use "My Account" and "Order History" to see your orders like you are used to in respectable websites. All what you can do is after a maximum of 6 hours, you can manually check your order status by choosing order status from the lenovo website and entering your order number and e-mail address or phone number or by clicking on the order status link that comes in the order confirmation e-mail that you receive from lenovo after the first e-mail you get acknowledging the order.mikew3456 said: ↑ok i ordered my w530 today thru barnes and noble discount. when i try to check the order status details, everything is blank and it says "Message: Invalid Customer ID". is it because its the weekend?Click to expand...

Well, my brother runs VMs just fine on his desktop with 9GB of RAM, so I would think it's overkill unless you've tried and know you need at least 16GB. Can anyone tell me if the FHD panel on the T530 is the same one used for W530?
-
Since the maintenance manual is the same for both systems, I think it's fair to say the screen options are the same as well (in other words, yes)
-
If T/W510 FHD and T/W520 FHD were any indication, I would say "same." To me, only this screen option has been consistent.pchome said: ↑Can anyone tell me if the FHD panel on the T530 is the same one used for W530?Click to expand...

so if this w530 machine has to last that long, i want to be future proofed
but no telling if the x1c or mbp or something else catches my eye sooner -
That's probably where they're manufactured, so why wouldn't they ship from there? I'd be willing to bet that Lenovo doesn't manufacture either of those items themselves...pchome said: ↑But $12.00 ear phones or a mouse from China shipping for every single customer, really? That is fine, I understand that. Apple has the same situation too but they definitely keep stock of these 'silly' small items at their warehouse in the US. They are not crazy to ship a mouse or headset from China every time a customer orders one especially that these are not CTOThinkRob said: ↑That's probably where they're manufactured, so why wouldn't they ship from there? ^^^ Completely different business approaches. A bazaar cannot be compared to a boutique.

Pulled the trigger on a T530 with FHD. Will upgrade to 16GB RAM and Samsung 830 512GB SSD and it should fly even with VMs running.
Hope I don't regret getting a bulkier machine (I come from a T400s) but there are really no other options. I won't take another crappy display (T4x0 line) and the retina MBP has just too many downsides for me, so it just wouldn't make sense. Although it's one of those devices you just want if you play around with them. If they had one in stock yesterday in the apple store I think I would have bought one but fortunately they didn't so I was forced to come to my senses.
-
I reached the same decision and pulled the triger for the same machine too but will upgrade with Samsung 256GB and 8GB RAM. I am afraid to regret this too but what else one should do when those companies do not look after their companies need and do the right things and just try to provide cheap machines (though not so cheap to be honest). Another funny thing is that I ordered the T530 8 days after my order for T430 (after I gave up on the latter shipping) and guess what, they will ship at the same time!!! What a nice reasonable company.WWhite said: ↑Pulled the trigger on a T530 with FHD. Will upgrade to 16GB RAM and Samsung 830 512GB SSD and it should fly.
