It all depends on what frequency the wireless 3g run on, if they are the same I see no reason that it cannot run. Another thing you might do is, buy the laptop in the us and add the wann later on.

    Thanks.

Will it be a trivial matter to find a high-quality WWAN card that will fit from a third-party at a reasonable price down the track? If so that would definitely be preferable as I don't expect to require WWAN for a few months, maybe longer.

You can call Lenovo to buy it directly from them, they should be around AU200+. Another route is look ebay.

I am one of the 75+ but I am interested in the x220t i5 which is said will be released Friday.

Will those of us ordering the yet released x220t configurations still be able to participate in the group purchase?

It seems a comparable revision occurred with the x220's.
    x220 i appears i3 only, whereas x220 can be configured w/ i5 or i7.
I presume the same convention will hold with the x220t's.

    Can I get some opinions regarding x220i vs x220 (i3 2310m vs i5 2410m)

Would I be better off with the i3 and the intel ssd or the i5 and the 7200rpm hdd?

Also, are there any reviews that show the 9 cell vs 6 cell size difference? Are both compatible with the slice battery?

So please answer me this. For the average user (wife), would it be more beneficial to use the money spent on going from i3 >> i5 to something like changing from hdd to sdd? Unless my wife is some sort of international spy and I just ceased her operations b/c i pretty much handicapped her computer.

It's really not quite that simple, finding those two specific processors on a chart together is actually pretty rare, even still my question was more complex. I asked about the SSD trade off in conjunction with the difference between those processors, and was looking for some real world opinions, not just benchmark scores.

Also, the first result in your cute little google search doesn't even have accurate information. It claims that all i5's have 4 cores and none have hyper-threading, neither of which are true.

Don't bother upgrading the processor. Day to day things you will not notice ANY improvement what so ever. Gaming, a little, benchmarking, a lot. But browsing, Word, start up/shutdown - none.

And no offense but if it's for your wife as you mentioned earlier, I doubt she would even notice the speed improvement from a SSD. Save your money and get her the stock config. She won't know any better unless she knows computers, and if she does you wouldn't be asking that question here.

That question you could VERY easily google. Just type i3 vs i5 real world... seriously. So maybe you hit one mis-informed link. Welcome to the internet. If that site gave you wrong info, why do you assume you will get correct info here?

CPU choice, the speed performance can be looked up easily in other computer enthusiast sites which I'm sure you know how to do. Afterall, you found this site. And you're asking for opinions, but technical data. :D

My opinion is that get the i5. This choice depends on how long you plan to keep the computer. I am planning to keep it for at least 3 years. And I know 3 years down the road, newer version of Office and Windows and whatever applications will be available. So I want to make sure the CPU is fast enough to run it. I don't want to buy a computer that'll only be usable today, but down the road as well. Sure, the i3 is good enough now...but when Windows 8 comes out, will you be ready for it.

Storage choice, I'm planning to buy the HDD version, then do a self-install on my own SSD replacement. Now, if you don't feel comfortable doing this on your own, then buy the SSD. Sure, the SSD cost a bank, but the speed, snappiness, computer boot time makes it all worth it. I will NEVER EVER go build another computer or buy another laptop that doesn't use SSD. Again, you can read all the benchmarks and reviews, the numbers are obvious.

Battery size, sorry, I don't know.

IMHO, an SSD is the upgrade that the average user will notice the most. From boot time to program loading, it makes the entire computer feel faster. Much more so than an upgraded CPU.

So I would say get the SSD (either as part of the order or an upgrade after delivery). I plan to -- I have an SSD in my current laptop and desktop and it is currently the single most impactful upgrade one can make to a computer these days (IMHO, and Anand agrees).

The X220's stock 7mm 320GB HDD is, most likely, the Hitachi. It's the only game in town right now, AFAIK. Maybe by end of year for larger capacities in 7mm.

Users replace/upgrade their RAM and HDD/SSD all the time.

Another poster built a table but it was incomplete.

Here's a list of specs for all the available processor options on the X220.

I went with the i5 2520 because of the faster graphics clock.

That SSD is 9.5mm in height. I don't think it comes with a removable plastic spacer that, when removed, brings the height down to 7mm.

Yes, Premium HD refers to the IPS option.

search for ddr3 1333mhz laptop ram on newegg. it costs $80 for 8gb so get the 2 gb ram and upgrade yourself for the same price lenovo asks for 4gb

get whichever ssd fulfills your space needs the best as they have similar performances. the intel one is made from intel. the other one is not (supposedly samsung or toshiba, whichever they have on hand)

pmx, there are probably minor differences in performance between the two different capacities. I don't think it is enough for you to notice. I would get the one that suit your budget. 128GB is a lot for me.....

You get a discount. You will tell the rep the specs you want, then they send you a link to a special page that you fill out with your info (or they can do it for you) and then it is bought. I have a special page waiting for me and it is valid for 30 days.

When I did it yesterday, I chatted with a rep online for more than an hour trying to get a good deal. I told him my specs and then he sent me the link. The rep is able to change things on the fly, so if you say you want a Core i5-2510M but then decide a minute after he sends the link you want the i3 instead, they will be able to change it and send you a link with the newly quoted specs and prices.

For example I told him I would like to get the computer sent to me quickly at home since I am only home for 1 week in between the end of the semester and summer classes, so he was able to make the 2-3 day shipping cheaper for me minutes after a link with the first price had been sent to me. Then he just resent me the link and all was good.

Just talked to the rep about missing options on the x220t, and the i5 and larger battery is supposed to be available on next Tuesday...

What do you guys think about using the tablet for taking notes in classes? Would I be better off just getting the x220 and save myself several bills?

    Hi guys,

I don't see any mention of USB3 port(s) in any of the configs including custom builds.

I remember reading somewhere at some point that USB3 was only included when selecting the i7 cpu. Is that still the case ?

I would certainly feel better if the build summary mentioned it somewhere to have it in writing so to speak.

Depends on what you're taking. If your curriculum includes physics/mathematics/chemistry etc., a conventional laptop will be largely useless, whereas a tablet could be invaluable. If, however, most of your classes are in language/biology/computer science/political science etc., the laptop may be preferable. Evaluate your courseload and how you intend to utilize your laptop.

I'm going with the tablet for flexibility.

X220i is on order. The specs are in the sig. The only upgrades were the IPS, uh no-brainer here, and the 320GB 5400RPM for a little extra storage. I also picked up the 80GB Intel mSATA SSD and an extra 1GB of memory. I can't wait to get this thing. Now I can run the FF and Vista sidebars at the same time, which I'm pretty jazzed about that fact. I think this is my last upgrade for a while. Of course I always say that when picking up a new machine and it never pans out that way. If they offer a X320 with a WXGA+ IPS LCD, this thing is going on the block.
