Also it is interesting that the new Edge e420 and e520 have the mSata option while the classic doesn't have the option as of now.

Seeing how the i3 can be had for around $1250, I would venture a guess that the i7 would be $200 more (a rough pattern in the i3-i7 upgrades across their laptops) so around $1450?

    Edit:
I take that back. For the x220, upgrading from an i5 to an i7 is $245, and the difference between the x220i (the i3 cheapest bottom line x220) and the i5 model is around $100, so probably more like a $300 upgrade from the i3 x220 Tablet.

Seems retailers here in Sweden will get some models late April or early May. Too bad it's impossible to tell which models that come equipped with IPS. I will hold back for the moment. Would prefer to see how good that screen really is. Too many desktop IPS screens have that horrible glow effect.

Hi guys, I have a question:

Is it worth it to upgrade the wireless to 6205 Intel stuff or is the Thinkpad worth it?

And also, with the monitor selection when you are purchasing your laptop, are those discounted prices or just normal prices? And does Lenovo sell any IPS displays?

@TSE: Regarding Wifi options.. http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/571369-x220-wifi-options.html No definite answers reached in that thread, but it does show what each of the cards offer and a few user experiences.
Personally, I'm going with the 6205 option. The Wireless-N 1000 is a 1x2 card, whereas the 6205 is a 2x2 card, so that second transmit stream should allow for more fluctuation in wireless coverage (provided you have a wireless access point that conforms to 802.11n specs)

Regarding the monitor selection, if you're purchasing a x220 (and not a x220 tablet), the "Premium" HD screen is the IPS screen. The non-premium HD screen is their regular screen.
For the x220 tablet, the IPS screen comes standard with both their "multi" and "outdoor" display options.

I was expecting the IPS (Premium) display to be more expensive than $50 extra. I hope the quality is noticeably better than the standard TN screen.

Chat Rep 1: i5 and i7 are available for x220t but due to a website error that Lenovo is aware of, it can only be configured with i3.

Chat Rep 2: The i5 and i7 will not be available to order w/ x220t's.

Phone Rep 1: x220t will be available to customize with i5/7 this Friday.

Go for the i5. If you look at Notebookcheck.net's processor list, the i3-2310M is #64, i5-2410M is #33 with roughly 30-50% more processing power. the usual upgrade price for i3->i5 is like $50, its worth it

find your old processor on there and see what difference it is too

for SSD/HDD, go find the specs for those SSD/HDDs and compare. i dunno

i think its 8 or 10 days. i havent actually bought it yet, waiting for a better price

When logged into Lenovo's academic storefront, the site is advertising the following coupon:
Save 5% on the Thinkpad X, X Tablet and Edge. eCoupon Code: USXAPRILSAVINGS2011

In addition, if you're unable to access student pricing ($125 less for x220t) then you may receive the same $125 discount via Lenovo's military discount page which appears open to civilians.

not sure if this has been answered elsewhere but what do you guys think between the i5-2510 (embedded processor?) vs the i5-2520M ? other that the difference in clock speed, why pick one over the other?

I dont believe the i5-2510 is an option for the x220.

    These are the options: 2410M, 2520M, 2540M, and 2620M

Are you using (or plan to use) a 5Ghz N wireless network at home? If so, then go with the 6205 because it is dual band capable wifi card (2 and 5Ghz).

Go to lenovo.com. At the top navigation bar, hover over "Solutions for" and then choose "Students". Now you can choose your school.

This also works for faculty and staff.

My there is nothing more sketchey than Lenovos site on a big launch day.
Finally got the order to take, but noticed that the language for Windows somehow was listed as Spanish!

Anyway bottom line was i5 9 cell, 720P camera and IPS for $845. Not bad.
My wife is going to castrate me when she finds out, but it is worth it! I use my computer more than that anyway. :)

Alright - just to clarify as this is new to me. If I were to go with i5, how would I go about adding USB3.0 later (I am told via expresscard)? In that case, do I have to purchase the Expresscard Smart Reader option? And, wouldn't it stick out?

    Thanks guys

Ok, there seems to be a lot of differing advice on these processors. I've been messing around with Intel's site and finally figured out how to compare processors between the 24xx family, 25xx family, and 26xx family of mobile processors (BTW, that's what the 'M' stands for).

My 2 cents: I don't mind spending an extra $45 for the 2520 vs the 2410. I think it's worth the improvements in base clock and turbo clock frequencies as well as the small improvement in GPU clock frequency. However, I would not spend another $45 for the 2540.

Jayayess - you order yours yet? I am looking forward to your impressions of the notebook when you get it. While not actively considering one of these, my wife is looking for a 13.3" notebook and ... :D

@DocJ - I have a first gen 540M in my Acer 3820TG and Love it. If the second gen is anything like the steps in the first gen, I would spend the extra money for the I5-2540M. I have tried a I5-450M, I3-370M and an I5-540M of the first gen ICores in the same computer and think that the I5-540M is a nearly perfect business CPU. Powerful enough for anything I have thrown at it. It was head and shoulders above the I5-450M which was similar in base-speed to the I5-520M.

    Bronsky

No. The smart reader card goes into the ExpressCard slot that is already in your x220. You absolutely dont need it unless you work for an employer like the Department of Defense and require a Smart Card reader for security reasons.

You can add USB 3.0 whenever by buying a card for the 54mm ExpressCard slot that comes standard with the x220.

However, you should know that you may not be able to power some USB 3.0 hard drives using a ExpressCard usb 3.0 adapter. It simply can't draw enough power. Some usb 3.0 hard drives will require an external power source.

Yep, Lenovo just told me there is a problem that is making the site default to spanish. They want me to cancel and order tomorrow.

Oh well, they insist I cancel and wait until tomorrow.

By then something will prolly happen to make it 10% more expensive.

Is there a list or some resource that I can look up regarding USB 3 HDD's that can't support power by itself? I'm going with the ExpressCard USB 3 route but I don't want to buy an external USB 3 HDD and not be able to use it..

I'm not aware of any resource like this. You should begin by looking for a USB 3.0 card and then read the reviews. You might be able to find out how much power it provides and then compare that with a USB drive requirements. But that's a lot of work and still doesn't guarantee anything. Another piece of advice is to buy your portable hard drive from a local store with a fair return policy.

Here's an example of some user reviews that deal with powering portable drives: Newegg.com - StarTech ECUSB3S2 2 Port ExpressCard SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter

edit: also, generally speaking, 3.5" portable drives will almost always come with an external power cord while 2.5" portable drives do not. It's really with 2.5" portable drives that you'll have to experiment with. More often than not, 2.5" portable should work, but again, buy them from a seller with a good return policy just in case.
