^ yes AM or April 29th, to the other question, it depends on them really. nevertheless Lenovo chief river models (ivy) are available for purchase on June 5th

The 11.6 sager model seems to be a good form factor to be lugging around but how durable can it be against a Thinkpad? If you can bear the small screen with the 1366x768 resolution, the price point appears competitive against the y480.
-
Hopefully, the i7-3612 ( 4 cores plus 4 hyperthreading), 35W will be released with the other IB quads as that would meet the 11.6 Sager's profile perfectly. I am suspecting they may not as laptop monkey do not have that IB CPU on ebay while they have the other quad IB CPUs listed.
-
-
Don't know why either - but they are doing false advertising with tigerdirect as the GPU is not an actual gt 640m but a gt 640 LE that is weaker.
-
-
I find that all the screens Lenovo has parts for the Y480 have LVDS (1 ch, 6-bit) Signal interface whilst all 1600x900 have LVDS (2 ch, 6-bit)
-
Broke down and got something sensible- Acer 7750g i5-2450m, 7670m, dual HDD, 17.3 HD 1600x900 screen all for $500! Better deal & performance than getting an APU. With my upgrades -SSD, ram, and overclock- this system should last me well into Haswell late 2013. Got frustrated of waiting for IB and I also had to watch out for the money flow. Can't beat the price/performance ratio of this system.
-
-
Best price I can find is $675. How'd you get it at that price?
-
FMruss, that's an impressive deal, and I can't help but wonder where you got it. -
pssst...tigerdirect

Looks like the 650M version IS happening: Intel Ivy Bridge launch laptops pictures and hands-on - Pocket-lint

now lets c if its ddr5 or ddr3 like asus n56

I really like the designs of most laptops this year. Samsung Series 5 13" with GT650m , sweeeeeeet, plus their awesome screeen.

-
I am going to hold off from the new tech as the increment of IB from SB (10-20%) does not warrant an extra $1000 for me with the GT 650m- I must resist temptation! drool...drool... No really, Haswell will be a real game changer and it's next generation in the 2013-2014 cycle. The tech that I got for the moment will suffice for the moment and I can easily sell later with the ugrades I did. The mantra should be get you need and not what you want. The Acer model that I got also has a PCIe slot (where wifi card is sitting) that you can do an egpu. But, if you got the moolah, enjoy (words from a recovering tech addict $38,000 in the hole for new tech over the last 25 years). Just my humble perspective.

With the specs and supposed performance of the 7870m, I'm starting to wonder if I should wait for a slim 15 laptop to debut with that instead of the y580.
-
There are a lot of other ultrabooks coming out with dedicated graphics-
I always like the option of thunderbolt to connect an egpu later on and get the most use out of your laptop if you are into gaming.
Again, everything is relative to your needs and budget-
7700m series seem to offer good promise but we have to see benchmark scores of their other gpus as we only have in hand the 7970m scores.
If you can wait till June, the better. -

IdeaPad Y480 14" Laptop | Shop | Lenovo | US
anyone else sorely dissapointed, 4 models, none with the gt 650m, i knew the gtx 660m was too good to be true, but this is BS
and also no 1600x900 option as well, they really need to step up and hopefully add in more options. -
Looks like I'll be taking my money elsewhere - that is extremely dissapointing. -
Looks like my y460 isn't going to get replaced my the y480.
The y480 seems too mediocre. The search continues...
-
Who saidGTX 660min Y480 lol, itwas a typo on that page. GT650m n GTX660m will be in Y580. It's pretty overpriced right now and the same with Y580 for sure. Anyway aneo e mnow if I can replace the Y580 screen with a 95% gamut one ?

So I chatted with a Lenovo rep earlier and they said the 480 may get the 650M in later configurations. He then spent 15 minutes trying to convince me that the 640 was just as good for all games on the market, especially on the x768 screen. Sigh.
Wish Sager would plug the 650M into a 14" model. Anyone know of any other 650M/Ivy Bridge laptops between 13 and 14 inches? -
-
You cannot physically jam pack all that into a 14" unless you make it looks like a 15" , which doesn't really make it a 14" . Don't put your trusts in sales reps. I don't bother to buy a word from them when there aren't even rumors on the subject

They are expecting to gouge customers who are not informed with the tech- greatest maximum profit with minimum cost- still last year's GPU performance at medium details and very moderate cpu speed increase with very minimal cost.
We deserve better than this for sure - -
^ hence informed customers come here to gain some insights before making the purchase

Amen bro! ...

also the samsung q470 or series 5 500P4A is a 14inch probably with a gt 650m -
The 5 series might have 650 but the prices look very high even without it.
Vaio has a 900p 650 coming but that's super expensive. The asus 46vz has 650 and ivy theoretically but were still waiting for pricing. So bummed Y480 screwed us. Glad we had this thread to check before ordering! -
By the way, it's near impossible to upgrade the Y480 screen, I figure the connector is 30pins LCD/10pins Webcam
Y580, I am still figuring out. -
Found a good deal at the Dell outlet store for a vostro 3555 A6-3400, 6520g igpu, 4gb ram, dvd-rw, 500gb 7200rpm - for $328 out the door with coupon. Going to flake out with Tigerdirect again and return my order. This would have been $305 but taxes and recycling fee added to it. This will suit my purpose given the A6 can easily be OC to 2.8 -3.0 GHZ and the igpu also be bumped up. Just temporary tech right now until something really game changing comes along.
This even has a back-lit keyboard. -
-
^ Read the manual and find its parts.
Y480 Y580 lcd upgrade -
Okay guys, I'm not going to claim that the release of the y480 wasn't disappointing, because it definitely is to some degree. However, stop counting the laptop out completely; there's more to come!
First off, note that this was a soft release of the laptop. No publicity, nothing special. They didn't even put the release on their homepage! To me, this means it's more of a teaser of the possible configurations Lenovo has in store. You shouldn't think of this as the laptop Lenovo will be offering for the next year, but as a bit of a teaser.
Of course, that means very little, so time to get to something more concrete. One complaint I saw a few places on this thread since the release is the pricepoint. $1250 for the lowest-end quad-core version? No thanks!
But wait. That's the web price without any discounts. If you've paid any attention to the way Lenovo operates, their laptops are VERY RARELY offered at that price. Lenovo constantly has deals running, and all the y-series laptops seem to be discounted perpetually. For example, notice that the highest-end model of the y470p is listed with a web price (in green) of $1250.
Affordable Entertainment Laptops | IdeaPad Y Series | Y470p | Lenovo | US
However, in the month or so I've been considering buying a y470p, I've never seen the actual price jump over about $830 because there's always some sort of sale on it. That's how Lenovo works.
So I'm sorry if the laptop looks expensive right now, but just wait. Sometime soon, Lenovo will start up a new weekly offer and the y480 will be brought down to the $800-$900 pricepoint everybody expected. In fact, it just so happens that on April 26 (tomorrow) two of Lenovo's current deals will expire. Who knows, maybe one of the new deals Lenovo starts up will include the y480?
That brings me back to my first point. Why hasn't Lenovo made a big deal about releasing a new laptop in one of its most popular series? Why hasn't it even mentioned it on the homepage? Maybe because it's waiting for its current deals to expire so it can announce and advertise the y480 at a more attractive sub-$1000 price!
This still leaves a few hardware complaints:
The screen resolution is sort of moot, as a higher resolution on such a small screen is pushing it and really does make you strain your eyes (and no I'm not some blind old man, I'm young and have 20-15 vision). If that's not enough of an excuse for you, do as I will: buy a cheap HDMI cable and hook the laptop up to that HD screen I'm sure you already own. It's a bit of a disappointment, sure, but Lenovo never promised us a better screen and I'm still not positive we really need one.
Nobody has mentioned it yet, but the 5400 rpm HDD on the y480 is a bit of a disappointment. Luckily, in keeping with the rest of its y-series, Lenovo has included an mSATA slot for us. I know it's a workaround, but with SSDs coming down in price, I have no problem buying one to do a bit of a tech upgrade. The performance boost you'd see by adding the SSD is amazing. If you don't believe me, look at the before and after benchmarks when LaptopReviews added an intel 330.
Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 Review
The graphics card is a definite let-down, as I too was looking to future-proof my laptop a bit with at least a 650M. However, there's an upside to even this. Lenovo's product page pictures a much flashier version of the y480 with a black case and red-orange trim (similar to the y470). To me, this means that entire models of the y480, models utilizing this body, have yet to be released. Will one of them be carrying a 650M on board? Only time will tell.
To recap, though today you may be disappointed with the y480, don't give up on it. I can almost guarantee that a discount will come soon, likely to the tune of $400. For that, you can buy a decent SSD and monitor and still pay less than many other of the gaming laptops you've mentioned as alternatives. In addition, if you're willing to wait a couple of weeks, I'd like to believe that a 650M version of the y480 is yet to come, and I'd wager that if one does come, you won't find a better value (price vs. performance) for an Ivy Bridge+Kepler laptop. -
the screen is still awful , 900p would be ideal. Plus not everyone is able to hook it to a monitor
-
-
Yeah, that's disappointing. I wouldn't recommend that to friends until, at the very least, a GT 650m variant is offered. On top of that, a 1600 x 900 screen with better viewing angles would be awesome. I'm personally not going to buy another laptop for least another year or so (maybe the y490 or y490p) since I do have a y460 with 900p right now. My only grudge will develop into the graphics performance. As more demanding games become available, a laptop with decent graphics performance, within a 14" form factor, will become more desirable.
-
So the reps are saying that the 650M may come as soon as June but no guarantees or pricing info.
Would have been nice to be informed of this at some point instead of having to ask multiple salesmen who all give different answers. -
I had another impulse buy moment- and decided to cancel the vostro 3555 and instead bumped it up to the vostro 3450 w/ 6630m, backlit keyboard at $539 with tax and delivery. What really pushed me is the ease to implement egpu with this unit (w/ express card slot)- the current Y480 specs is still lacking for the price even at $999. Same form factor as the y480 and saved myself $500 in the process with decent specs and features.
-
Highly believe 650m GDDR3 will be revised in future for Y480. 650m GDDR5 standard or as optional as GTX 660m in Y580.
-
-
Reps still saying 650M is coming and to check back in two weeks for the Y480.
Hrmph. -
Bet GDDR3 hehe, if the screen was 900p I'd be happy
