So why would anybody buy the 480/580 when the upgraded GPU is just around the corner?

IdeaPad Y480 - Powerful Gaming Laptop PC by Lenovo (US)
check the "do list" there will be a gtx 660m in the y480
and Mikegrann was right there are deals on the i7 model -
im not getting my hopes up for a gtx 660m......just because lenovo says it, its not really specific, could be for a y580.
-
its a little bit retarded that the y480 with ssd costs 950$ and without ssd 1000$...
-
-
The gap between GDDR3 and GDDR5 in 650m isn't much of a deal if the screen is below 900p which is the case. You have to compromise :/

Looks like Ill be getting the 11.6" Clevo since there's no other option in this range... -
Will the y480 have express card? I'm thinking of buying it and make an eGpu,
in the spec sheet it says none though http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/y480_tech_specs.pdf -
Still hoping the backlit keyboard in the 480 fits in my 470... fingers crossed!
-
-
God, I just wish they'd let me know if/when they plan to have a 650M model. I just need to know if there is a reason to wait... -
You may want to see what the new 3450 Vostro's are with their video cards. Nice small 14" screen, backlit keyboard, dvd-rw, express card slot (for egpu GTX 690 anyone for a laptop?)- their old SB models have the 6630m and can be had for $600 with an i5 with stackable coupon RP2R6RDX12DT28 for $50 off.
-
Should I expect to see more announcements come June with the IVB dual-core announcements? -
-
We will see in June what they have to offer. The thermal TDP should be similar to 15 watts as the 6630m -All of the AMD 7000 new mobile series I am looking at 32-36 watts lowest for 7750m and 7770m. Unless they have increased the watt power of the upcoming vostros.
-
Current models are getting prices slashed. Rumor is there are new models coming Monday, May 7. Hope we see a 650M version!
-
i3, backlit keyboard, 640m LE, 14" for $679 - not shabby but i3's can be had for around $350 - so still paying a premium $329 for the a moderate GPU and backlit keyboard. Hmmmm... Me no understand.

I've only heard "June" from them myself but I can cross my fingers, can't I? -
I ordered a y480, but after reading this thread it seems like a big mistake.
I'm a bit reluctant to rescind my order bc like someone mentioned, there was a pretty big sale on the y480 this week and I didn't want to miss it because my budget was sub $1k
Is there a better alternative to the y480? I am a light gamer and student who might need heavy processing power.
Speaking of processing power, I am confused about the roles of 2nd-3rd gen i3-5-7 processors. What is the difference between a say, 2nd gen i3 that gets 2.3gHz and a 3rd gen i7 that has the same gHz number? -
The last thing to mention is the difference between 2nd gen (Sandy Bridge) and 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge). We've already established that an i7 (eg the 2.3 GHz 3610QM) has more power than an i3 at the same clock speed because there are 2 extra cores (and 4 extra threads) rated at that speed and all the cores have the ability to speed up significantly if they need to (up to 3.3 GHz in the example). But what about a 2nd gen i7 versus a 3rd gen i7? Well, the main difference between the two is that the Ivy Bridge processors are said to have 20% more power than a Sandy Bridge processor at the same speed. In addition to this, the former has the new Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics which are a significant step up from last generation and are as good as an entry-level dedicated graphics card.
So what does all that mean to you? Well if you want to do any real gaming, video processing, etc. you'll probably want an i7. In all honesty, though, most people won't notice much of a difference between this and last generation's i7, especially with a dedicated graphics card. If I missed anything, I invite others to chime in or correct me.
On a bit of a side note, I was actually very excited about the y480 as well, but the letdown on the prices and GPU was just too much for me. Just a heads-up, the y480 was predicted to come out at a price of $800-$900 WITH the promised gt 650m card, so it was hard for most of us to swallow the higher prices and very inferior graphics card (which wasn't even an upgrade from the last-generation y470p). That's what put us off of the product.
If you're gaming on a budget and you like the y480, I would actually recommend the y470p. If you don't care too much about a backlit keyboard, you'll get a laptop with the same dimensions and weight, a cooler appearance (opinion), and about the same performance overall. Make sure to get the 7200rpm hard drive to get the best performance. A couple of weeks ago all that was $750 and I expect it'll go back down to that price sooner or later. In my opinion, it's not worth paying a few hundred extra for the rest of the hardware, though I'm sure many people might disagree.
I personally just ordered the new HP dv6t quad (7000). It's pricier, but you can get a student discount from HP Academy or use one of HP's great coupons (Google it) and get a very powerful machine for about $1000. I'd recommend it greatly, especially because you don't sacrifice TOO much in portability to get the bigger 1080p screen and higher specs, particularly because the y480 is already a heavier 14" laptop.
Good luck to you. If you have your heart set on a sub-$1000 14" gaming laptop, you're a bit out of luck; there's another thread on these forums with pages and pages of people searching for and failing to find such a laptop. If you care less about having a good gaming pc and can handle a lower-level card, then congratulations! you'll enjoy your new y480 very much. If you're willing to sacrifice a bit of portability for power, we dv6t owners have a thread with information on what specs matter most when configuring that laptop and tons of other stuff. -

I would add that the current GT640LE is definitely a weaker card
than the GT640, which should be available beginning of June.
For example NotebookCheck indicates the GT640 should be able to get
about 31fps in Skyrim on high detail while the GT640LE can only get
playable fps on low detail. -
I haven't given up full hope in the Y480 just yet. Sales reps have said that they expect the 650M model to be announced sometime in June and, if the current sales and discounts are any indication, an IVB+650M model will be attainable for $1000 or less, which is what I've been looking/waiting for.
Crossing my fingers. -
get a clevo w110er/ sager np 6110
11.6 inches, gt 650m, up to quad core
or if u want a 14inch laptop, ull probably have to wait until june
when asus n46vz, samsung 500p4a, lenovo y480, and possible hp envy 4, or dv4 come out. They all predicted to have a gt 650m variant though most would likely be gt 630 or gt 640m.
basically, manufacturers are waiting for the release of the i5 dual core line up of mobile ivy bridge -

I don't believe you need a coupon codes Above is the dialog box you get when you hit save configuration, as you can see it gives the price and there is not mention of any coupon codes I don't know what else to tell you, if you do need a coupon, I can't see where you'd need to insert it or where it asks for one, can you? -
when u put it in cart, right under where u would put in ur zip code to estimate tax, there is a box for coupon code whiich is where u put it in. -
Sorry for starting a sub-thread but..
I really was hoping for a 14"
I have Y480 ordered already, but I may be able to claim lenovo error (as some people mentioned earlier) about the gt640 M being LE.
my question: I'm looking at the envy 4t, w/"2nd gen Intel Core i5-2467M Processor(1.6 GHz) + AMD 2GB Radeon HD 7670M Discrete-Class Graphics", 2 yr accidental damage, 32SSD, and office H&S, backlit Kybd
it adds up to be $1,163.98 b4 tax and coupons.
This VS the "IdeaPad Y480 Laptop - 209386U" with 3 yr plan +sale is $1,106.
Which one do you think is better? -
-
In support of the theory that the Y480 will see better specs in June, the price continues to creep downward: new coupon ( USPY4880510) on the unit with 1TB 5400 and DVD (209388U) drops the price to $799. But beware the 640m LE.

I am personally really disappointed that Lenovo changed the cooling fan set up like they did on the Y480. It looks like you have to tear the whole computer a apart to clean out the fins. On my Y470 it was super simple to clean out the heatsink fins. Just pop off the cover undo 3 screws to the fan and you are in there. Anyone with a pet knows that hair gets in there. I don't know how many computers that I have fixed for others that had this issue. Computers that were "dead" came back to life once that mat of hair and lint is taken out.
This is one reason I am hesitant to upgrade to a Y480.
Dumb move Lenovo -

Newer video about the Y580 that briefly mentions pricing configs. Dude says $999 for lower end with 720p screen, $1199 for higher end with 1080p screen. Maybe with the usual Lenovo discounts and coupons, we'll be able to knock off a hundred or two off of the top price
Shame it's a glossy screen though. -
Can't wait for the y580. But, are there any other laptops similar (price, 660m, etc) to the y580?
Don't mention dv6t, I don't like it. -
Examples are the Asus N56, Samsung Series 7, Sager NP6165, MSI GE60, the HP dv6t (teehee), the possible HP Envy 15 refresh, and even the possibly upcoming MacBook Pros (although that's way beyond in price). -

Guys, Lenovo has updated the "do list" for the y480 and added that it will have the GTX660M graphics card! Can this possibly be true? A 14 inch laptop with a top of the line gpu?

Hands-on video/review from a Czech website:
Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 (Lenovo Blog Cz) - YouTube -
-
Sager NP6165: Great price and build, good reputation. Apparently trackpad and speakers suck, may be heavier than Lenovo Y580. No backlit keyboard.
MSI GE60: Good specs, lighter and thinner than most, but body made out of extremely glossy plastic.
HP DV6T: Nice specs, great price with coupons. It's HP.
HP Envy 15 Refresh: It's HP, and the previous Envy had screen issues. -
the ge60 has been updated ont he msi site. Now has an option for a gtx 660m!! and its only 1.48 inches thick

New "Wired" review of the Y480:
Review: Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 Ivy Bridge Laptop
I don't think they like it.
Also, this Wikipedia article on the Ivy Bridge technology says that:
"Ivy Bridge's temperatures are reportedly 20°C higher compared to Sandy Bridge when overclocked."
Ivy Bridge (microarchitecture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Won't that play havoc, in the already high temperatures debate, of the Lenovo Y-series. What I mean is, if your Y470 runs hot at 90 degrees, and throttles the CPU, what will the Y480 do?
Everybody knows that I'm not a gamer, but don't "most" gamers overclock?:confused2:
Set me straight, if I'm wrong.
