Yea I don't trust the temps on this thing, either. Would like to see more test results.

I am hearing from different threads of the heat issues with the ivy bridge when it is turbo boosting- with some of the laptops already performing poorly in the thermal department- would this just be a big fail on part of intel? Trinity is looking better with the thermal side.

When these were first announced I had high hopes for light laptops
    with ok gaming performance.

The actual Y480 is to heavy and 640LE is too weak. The Y580 as you
mention is way to heavy. You can get a sager with 7970M at 6.8lbs and
for sure that machine is a beast and will handle the heat.

I don't know. I think this looks pretty promising. 6 pounds is too heavy now? Jesus. I'm just want it to have quality cooling/screen/speakers.

Yeah, especially seeing as most of its competitors (ASUS N56, HP dv6t, etc) manage to be around six pounds as well.

It doesn't appear that this has a matte screen though. If it did, it would be perfect (for me at least). Can't wait for the pricing, should be in the next week or two!

Yeah, the apparent lack of a matte screen (for now) sucks. I wish they held poll like this one several years ago to gauge the public's demand for either the matte or glossy screen. It is nice that they are ditching the second USB 2.0 port on the right hand side and replacing it with a USB 3.0 port bringing that total to three, as seen in the gallery. On the other hand, the spec sheet says otherwise stating it will have 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 ports. Too bad there's no thunderbolt port.

Yes this laptop is a bit beefier at 6.2lbs than the thinner HP dv6t at 5.65lbs. However, it appears that the y580 has a larger cooling fan. I'll put up with the extra 0.55lbs if it means that the laptop remains a bit cooler.

As for the 660M, I hope that Lenovo isn't going to gimp it like it has for the their y480 and y570. Its recent history suggest that my hopes should be too high.

    1366x768 screen and 7690 instead of 555.

I am waiting to see if the Y480 is ever going to get the 640. 640LE is
    definitely a gimped card.

Well, someone already spoken for the y480. For the y570, the GT 555m that Lenovo included was in fact a rebranded 525M/540M/550M with higher clocks, which contained 96 shaders rather than 144 found in the actual GT 555m. Nonetheless, the y570 should still be good for gaming since games could only run at 1366x768 max and not 1080p HD due to the crappy screen the y570 had.

I found this when I was searching for Y580 news: Buying new laptop? Need RECOMMENDATIONS?, V15

It's a thread where a poster (the one with the swastika avatar...) has posted what looks like specs for the models that will be released in China. Well that's what it looks like to me through the broken English.

I'm waiting for this to come out in the UK, whenever that might be.

I don't really see the big fuss about a glossy screen, you can apply a stick on matte cover to it yourself - sure it's fiddly to get all the bubbles out but when it's on it's on.

the y480 now has 650m 2 gb on the spec sheet, whereas i believe up untill this morning, it was only in the to do list and not in the spec sheet unless i saw the wrong thing this when i checked the tech spec sheet this morning. doesnt say ddr3 or gddr5 though.

    Hi AlwaysSearching
thanks for the link! There is one thing that impresses me about the y480, in the reviews I've read online it benchmarks faster than asus's new g75vw which has faster hdd's, and costs a lot more! Pretty slick!

the 2gb ddr5 650m is available in china. Conveniently I am there and am really thinking of buying this but I have two questions.

    1) is the msata slot sata3?
    2) does anyone definitively know if I can swap the lcd to a better one like perhaps the 900p matte one in the t420?

So does anybody have a Y480 with the Kepler based 640M yet? Is it overclockable? If so how high did you get?

Also do we know what the ssd is? Is it mSata? Is SSD caching setup by default? If so is it Intel's or some proprietary setup?

Really interested in one of these and am wondering if I should just sell my Vertex 3 240 and pay the extra 100 bucks for the ssd option.

What’s the heating/cooling like on an Y480 or previous Y4 models?

At only 2.2kg with a very powerful CPU and GPU I’m concerned about throttling or having GPU failure within 12 months. Looks a good package mind, less than $1,000 in China for i7, 8gb, 650M GDDR5 and 1tb hard drive. Can pretty much game anything on Ultra settings with the Y480 resolution. Don’t like the exterior though, looks cheap and not as suitable for work as say Samsung’s Series 7 line of laptops. Hope China gets Samsung’s Ivy Bridge refresh soon, need to purchase a new laptop this month.

Does it list 650M or 660M as options at the time of order? It looks like the todo list on Lenovo's website that has been around for months. Note, 640LE is also touted there and is highly likely going to be on the default install.

You can purchase the Y480N with 650M GDDR5 in stores and it’s being sold on Taobao and other online retailers. Shouldn't be too long until they start selling the Y480 here with the new i5s.

On Taobao, you just choose to go with the 640LE edition or the 650M edition. Price difference is only 400RMB ($60). Y480M (640LE) aesthetically looks better IMO.

That's pretty competitive out here, actually very good given the GPU and size of the machine. An Asus Republic of Gaming laptop is twice the quoted price given for the Y580, while Alienware's are hugely expensive out here also. The Y580 looks a better bet than Aleinware's M14x, beats it on specs. Looks far more aesthetically pleasing than the Y480 as well. Might pop along the shops today and play around with one, probably too heavy for my needs but as said, that's a really good price out here. Should sell tons.

Ooh, if you're able to see it in person, would you mind taking note on the screen? Basically viewing angles, how glossy the "glossy" display is, etc. Besides cooling, the screen's the only part I'm really worried about right now.

Well I didn’t venture down to the stores but the Y580 with third generation i5 (i5-3210M) is now being sold out here with the GTX660M.

    http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?id=15362207581&ad_id=&am_id=&cm_id=&pm_id=

But I called a friend of mine who works for Lenovo and he said that all current Y580 have 1366x768 screen resolutions. Confirmed on the Taobao link as both screens for the Y570 and Y580 have the same screen description - 15.6" LED背光屏,16:9黄金比例.

I just purchased a Y480... I didn't do too much crazy research, but I felt like based on the reviews I read, it would meet my needs at a reasonable price of $900 CDN + tax (opted for the 1TB hard drive + blu ray

Is this really a mediocre laptop? I looked at many benchmarks and I thought that it was farily impressive, as well as the cosmetics. I won't do any crazy gaming (prob D3 and some older comp games that I have), but would hope that this will be no slouch. I ordered yesterday, says it's not gonna ship for another week. Maybe they're putting the better GPU in it? lol...

which model of the Y580 did u guys order? i have a MBP that's 3 yrs old and i'm looking for a replacement, so far it seems that the new HP ENVY 15, dv6t-7000 and the Y580 are really legit candidates for what they offer. not sure which one i'll get though.

i've heard horror stories of bad build quality in the dv6t, and poor IPS screen in the new ENVY 15....anyone knows about lenovo build quality? do they have flex in keyboards, bezel of the screen peeling off or extremely hot when doing gaming?

here are the specs and the price of each laptop if i were to order:

    HP ENVY 15

    i7-3610m
    AMD 7750m 1G
    8G RAM
    750G Hybrid HDD
    1920*1080p display

price after coupon and CA tax: $1,261.22

    HP dv6t-7000

    i7-3610m
    Nvidia GT 650m 2G
    8G RAM
    1TB HDD
    32G mSSD Cache
    1920*1080p display

    price: $1,137.36

    Lenovo Y580

    i7-3610m
    Nvidia GTX 660m 2G
    8G RAM
    1TB HDD
    32G mSSD Cache
    1920*1080p display

    Price: $1,239

so which one out of these three would you guys choose as a best buy?
