I'm so torn! I have a Y470 so I'm a Y-series fan, but there's also the Samsung Series 7 17.3" that has a *slightly* larger footprint but 50% thinner profile. The 650M compares to the 660M too.
But the Y580 is so much cheaper and has blu-ray and the option for an mSata mini-SSD.
Choices choices..
-
I would also like to know peoples opinions about which is best between the y580 and the hp-dv6t laptop. I have been going back and forth on which is better.
-
First things first, this is not a review but rather my initial impressions of my Y580.
I've got to say I am mostly impressed. Though I still haven't had the chance to install any games on it since I just finished charging the battery, desktop performance seems top-notch. Not once am I reminded of its lackluster 5400RPM drive.
They managed to fit a TV tuner card in a 15.6" laptop which is all fine and dandy, but it is next to useless. What good is it if they don't even include the TV antenna? At the very least they should've provided the cable adapter, but NO.
Build quality is overall decent. Screen lid can get a tad wobbly compared to my old Samsung RF411, but build is more than sturdy enough for day-to-day travel. Laptop is almost as thick as the MBP 15 (sorry don't have any measurement tools with me). Fit and finish isn't exactly as OCD perfect as Apple's Macbooks , but I'm not complaining. The lid of my unit has some notable flaws. There the certain areas of the metal lid + lenovo logo that looks shinier than the rest. Nothing one should obsess over obviously, but something worthy to note nontheless.
As typical of Lenovo, keyboard is a joy to type on, providing solid feedback. This may be personal preference, but I rather enjoy the macbookish smooth key texture.
Speakers are surprisingly clear at high volumes, though bass is next to non-existant.
GeForce GTX 660M aside, the screen is the highlight of this machine. Vivid colors, perfect viewing angles. Though I can't say whether this is IPS, it sure is a high contrast panel.
Originally I was going to buy the new MBP but decided against it since it's a redesign. Apple always needed a revision to get things right, and this should be no exception.
Would post some 3DMark results when I have the time. -
thanx a lot cy007!
looking forward to some more information about the y580.
have fun with your new notebook! -
wait a minute, isnt it suppose to be thick
how is it about mbp size?
-
Nice. Any flaws that you think that may compromise long term endurance?
And please test battery life!
Many thanks! -
To people with the Y580, how is the cooling system on it? What are the temps like? I really want to buy one, I just don't want to be buying something that gets really hot.
-
I would like to know this as well.
How is the cooling on this labtop? -
Hi I'd stay away from the hp dv6 it has well known over heating issues. And, a lot of early buyers of the ivy bridge version got laptops with obvious build defects. Hope this helps!
-
its says in the specs that its about 1.4 inches thick. From what i understand based on a review of the y480 is that most of this and the 6.2 pounds goes to the cooling system. I am also really looking to seeing if the cooling system will be good cause after my dv6 im alittle more attentive on that.
-
Also wondering this. Can the Y580 handle some heavy work? Can anyone confirm or deny that it is a gimped 660m?
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2 -
It supposed to be not gimped, at least from what i read and saw. Screen shot from GPU-z and HWinfo would be nice
Screen is matte ?
-
I hope so, but unfortunately the screen is glossy
-
Just ordered a Y580. Going to compare it to my DV6t-7000.
Only thing bothering me is the low res on a 1k laptop. I might cancel my order and get the higher res option but it still goes for more than my DV6. -
Does anyone know when the Y480 will have a better GPU?
-
Any reviews for the y580 yet?
-
Sorry about the late reply. Really busy with... you guessed it, Diablo 3.
As I said earlier on, build quality is doesn't even touch the MBP. The body isn't entirely solid. Say if you lifted the notebook up on one corner, it noticeably flexes. Lid also flexes if you apply a little force. Not the worst I've seen in a laptop IMHO (*cough* Toshiba and Fujitsu), but obviously not the best for its price-range. With its high-end specs though, I'm more than happy enough with it to forget its shortcomings.
Can't seem to get 3DMark 2006 to run right. First run got 13376 only, while trying it again gave it 1000 more points.
-
Hmm... I thought Lenovos were supposed to have superb build quality, I guess that is only for the ThinkPads? (they just look so ugly)
Hows the keyboard and mousepad?
Already ordered mine, been released to manufacturing... -
Anyone know where I can buy a Y480 with the 1TB drive + 32GB SSD from a site that is NOT Lenovo.com ?
-
How was your heat during you d3 seasons?
-
Sorry to pile on more questions, but how was performance in D3? You try any other games as well?
-
Damn, I've been waiting out on this laptop for awhile now. Rumours that it wont actually come to the UK... anyone in the know on such things?
-
Seems like the cooling system in the Y580 is actually not bad at all:
The following is after one hour of Furmark + CPU benchmark from AIDA64:
-
my questions for any Y580 owners are .....
how is the screen quality of the 1080p panel?
sound is there any bass at all in the speakers?
how is thermal management in gaming and when not gaming
battery life ???
last but not least does it suffer from the same keyboard surround moving issue like the y480 review i read the keyboard is stable no flex but the plastic or metal surround in-between the keys does it move ?
and we need to get some pics here when ppl get theirs cuz i am seriously considering this system with a core i5 .... the new XPS disappoints me but it looks sexy just no number pad no 4th USB 3 and idk the US specs the Russian spec XPS sucks -
Assuming one can get one of the 1080p monitors available for the y580 do you think i could install it in the non 1080p y580 model with no issues?
-
yea i guess but i would just order a system with it i rather not open up a good system just to change the display and risk damaging sum-thing else but yea i should be an easy change since the display mounts and connector will be the same
-
Can anybody translate this review of the y580?
GTX660MÍæˬÓÎÏ·±Ø±¸ ÁªÏëY580ÆÀ²â_ÁªÏëY580N ÁªÏëY580NÆÀ²â ±¨µÀ_±Ê¼Ç±¾ÆÀ²â_eNet¹è¹È¶¯Á¦±Ê¼Ç±¾ÆµµÀ
It seems like a pretty full-fledged review, and judging by the pictures, it seems like this laptop performs very well. -
It's a bit much to ask for a 9 page review to be translated, especially when tools like Google Translate are available. If there are particular segments that are unclear after the automatic translation, I can help with that.
-
because china so they dont tell you the battery life
-
What are you talking about?
-
what stupidity are you speaking battery life matters all over the world -_- but yes the review neglected to talk about it their are other reviews coming any ways
-
That review is a performance benchmark oriented article, as indicated by the title in Chinese. I'm also looking for a review that mentions battery life, and will share this information when I find it.
-
reviews will take time to come out ...... especially a good review so in the mean time im waiting for trusted sources to review the system or if by the time i get my cash in august ill just order it as long as battery life is not under 3 hours with music and web surfing im good but Lenovo is offering batteries with higher capacities from the document i read up to 67 and or 72 watt hour .... from what i remember if i find the document i will link it here
-
I think the default is 72 watt hour. 3 hours should be perfectly doable, unless Lenovo really screwed something up.
-
they cant screw it up it should get 5 hours max although it should be 6
-
Ok so I just went ahead and ordered the 14". I didn't like that the HDD was 5400 rpm,
battery life was mediocre, and that the screen was glossy and only 768 lines. But
in the end, I couldn't pass up this deal....

I've never understood why it's so hard to make a really solid-feeling laptop.
-
Because I live in china and you quickly learn that nothing here makes sense.
Also the reason i wanted to know if i can swap the screen is because china so they don't sell it with a 1080p screen, although the article seems to say that it may be available in the future.
Here is a better explanation of 'because china'
emkajii comments on I laughed WAY too hard at this when we read it in class today... -
Thanks for the link villagepark, it was most amusing
I concede that my native land is indeed full of ... peculiarities.
On the other hand, let's try to not be too overly cynical about everything related to China. I am sure that one fellow or another will post a review that includes a battery life assessment. -
Deal. I made the original post because I am still mad that I am not allowed to use the 网吧 to play d3 because i don't have a PRC resident card. I think it is because the government tracks everyone's usage habits and kicks them off their games if they play too much (I have heard a rumor that this happens), but surely my passport number could also be used as a primary key in their database.
Back on topic, does anyone know what model number the 1080p panel in the y580 is? Also would any 15.6" 1080p panel with the proper connector work, or are there are differences between panels (perhaps thickness) that would stop them from being freely swappable? -
On the Y580 they offer the 15.6" FHD LED Glare Wedge 1920x1080 screen on the 45U, 4BU, and 4HU models.
I don't know about screen swapping.

I'm sad, the heat portion of that reviw showed the external temps at 58 in the center. that's really hot!
Edit: in fact idk if thats really correct because the hottest the y480 got was about 48C -
58.6C after running FurMark for an hour. Was the y480 running FurMark when the temperatures were recorded? -
in the above heat dist. pic, it shows that the Y580's cooling is pretty bad IMO. notice how most of the heat is trapped dead center within the laptop when the heat should be focused on the left side where the exhaust vents are.
-
Anyone know if Y580 comes with mSATA slot ? Would like to buy one for system+apps, but i am not sure if it will have slot for it.
-
Isn't one of the configuration options 1tb+32gb mSATA SSD?
-
is the msata sata 2 or 3?
-
sorry to say yuh asking answers cuz we don't know most likely it will be m sata 3
if not 2 ....... it should not really matter any ways ...... since the m sata will take a m sata ssd your good
