It is a matte screen, probably the same as the non-Touch X1C, with a protective film which adds a bit of gloss.

I would guess the opposite. It's a gloss screen to which a matte protective film is added.

Is there a competitor to the X1CT? The 14" screen in a 13" form factor is one of the unique things about it, other than being a Thinkpad.

There is the 13.3 Asus Zenbook Prime Touch aka UX31, limited to 4GB RAM but full HD touchscreen and up to 256GB SSD. Build quality seems highly variable.

There is the 13.3 Aspire S7, limited to 4GB RAM but full HD IPS touchscreen and up to 256GB SSD. Extremely thin and light but external battery is needed for 6+ hours of realistic use. The latest tests are very good except for the noise. But like most ultrabooks the i5 seems to be the better compromise than the i7 for noise, heat and battery life.

The Dell XPS 12 has a smaller screen (12.5) but full HD, IPS and 400nits, it is supposed to have a great keyboard and of course it is a convertible.

Hopefully soon the announced Samsung Series 7 Ultra (13.3 and 15 I think) will give the X1CT a run for its money with way bettter full HD IPS touchscreen, up to 16GB of RAM, a discrete graphic card and a keyboard that is supposed to be excellent.

Dell Latitude Latitude E6430s, HP EliteBook Folio 9470m, Toshiba Portege Z930 are all interesting business notebooks with high quality build. I can't imagine them not being refreshed with touch soon but we'll see.

I complained to Lenovo both via email and phone and got the ThinkPad 14W Ultrabook Topload & Standard Sleeve Set - Brown and Lenovo Slim USB Portable DVD Burner for $1 + tax each. Paid $2.30 in total and scored both as gesture for waiting so long for my order in New Zealand.

Man I'm almost starting to wish mine gets delayed. :D For the people that got theirs shipping date pushed back, what was the status of your order when that was happening? Mine says "released to manufacturing" and I wonder if this means anything at all, or not.

Just received the shipping email as well with a tracking number from Lenovo for the X1CT itself. Looks like they are sending the Topload/Sleeve and External DVD burner with the same shipment as it says 3 pieces in the tracking details @ 9KG. Delivery date is set for 31st January.

I did too. Looks like they are back on track shipping these things. Funny thing is that two hours before I got an email saying that its delayed and if I wanted to cancel it. Then I get the tracking #.

Have had 2 orders In Production for over a week, both had same Estimated Ship Date updates (latest to today, 1/24/13). 1 ordered on 12/14, the other on 12/26.

Today, 1st order is Shipped, while 2nd order has now moved out 3 days (vs. the 1 day at a time that has been happening for the last week +).

So, happy and sad but looking forward to getting one and praying that it works right!

I requested price quote as well, they gave me an email address to send a screen shot. I can't find the one I originally had, does anyone have one I can use? Worried they aren't going to honor it.

Sounds like X1CT's are finally going to start making there way out to those who have been waiting. Two important tips to keep in mind as you start using the laptop.

    1. Disable "Edge tap filtering" under Mouse Properties/UltraNav/TouchPad Settings/Smart Check Settings. The TouchPad will appear sub par until you do when it is actually a very good one.

    2. Download the Eye-One calibrated ICC file from the X1C Color Settings thread. The default ICC is too "cold", so unless you like a lot of blue you are going to want to change it.

Here is something I came across after doing a "refresh" through Windows Recovery:

If you are having trouble connecting to wifi make sure that the drivers don't have 802.11n disabled. Both the Lenovo and Intel drivers defaulted to this for some reason. I wasted a lot of time on this one trying to figure out why I couldn't connect to my AP when I could before.

I have a question from those who got UPS email. From the last 3 days, I haven't seen any update over UPS website under my tracking number . Today when i contacted UPS, they say that's because only billing and label is created till now and the package is not physically picked up by our facilities yet. you should contact shipper to finalize the package for us. So it means that shipping is not done by the Lenovo and they just prepared a label. I hope it's not again another phase of delaying at this stage. is this same for every one else or do you see updates related to the package shipping progress?

just received my x1ct this morning. however, i have a feeling they sent me an x1c instead as the sticker on the box reads "Thinkpad X1 Carbon."

for those who have received an actual x1ct, can you confirm that the label should read "Thinkpad X1 Carbon Touch?" thank you.

i didn't want to open the box as i thought i'd have to send it right back.
well, i decided to open it and it definitely is a non-touch carbon. exactly what i was afraid of.

now the nightmare begins. customer service is telling me that i didn't order a touch and they want me to place a new order. they won't honor the original price and won't guarantee priority shipping. it'll end up costing me about $350 and probably take another 6 weeks of my time.

    not sure what to do....

That's very unprofessional bossiness. In your order below the system details do you have "Display Panel: X1 Carbon 14.0 PHD+ MT", usually all the X1 carbon orders are numbered as "3443CTO" while ordering and you may only know from display detail that it's multi touch enabled.
If your order clearly indicate +MT, I suggest you do not return current one and insist on replacement. when the correct model delivered, you will be asked to return whatever shipped by mistake.
If your display is as it was ordered, I think it might work if you call sales department and speak to the person who placed the order (If you didn't order online yourself). they can direct you to that person based on the order number and he or she is responsible for this mistake.

My tracking information is in and my X1CT will be here Monday morning.

My system details state: Display Panel X1 Carbon 14.0 PHD+ MT. I will report back if I don't get a touch. As stated by ali.precioso, if it states "MT" in your system details you should have all of the proof you need that you ordered the Touch version of the X1C.

yeah, the problem is, my ovp page does not say MT. i was scared that this exact thing would happen, so i called several weeks ago to confirm that i was getting a touch panel. the rep said, "i know what you're seeing on the site, but when i look up the order on my system, i can confirm that the panel is a touch panel. don't worry." famous last words.

i ordered online, so there's no one to claim responsibility. it was just a glitch in their system. i do have a screenshot from my checkout page, though, that clearly states MT.

Since the order was X1 non-touch, the after sale department did it's correct job to send you this model. but you should call and complain ta a manager in sale department about the misguiding information provided about your order during past weeks.
If you don't want to stay with a non-touch model, I suggest you to check your credit record and see if it's sill a hold in your account, usually it takes several business days to be charged for your purchase, If it's still a hold, ask your credit company to dispute Lenovo charge and go ahead with return policy, since you have this right. While placing the order for X1CT, keep the current one if you need it.
I have a quote confirmation email of $1267(before tax) for X1CT/i7/8GB/128GB and can forward to you if you needed.

Exact same here. I chatted to a rep who claimed that they are shipping fine right now and the delay is just a "mistake on the website". I'm pretty sure he was just making it up. So if mine doesn't ship on Monday 28th, I'll at least try squeezing some credit or freebies out of it. To the people who managed to do that: was it over phone or chat? Which one you think is more effective? I'm also afraid if I threaten to cancel the order, the rep will just say "ok". Can that happen or do they do their best to convince you not to cancel?

Ali.precioso is it possible for you to send that quote to me as well? i was promised that price when i initially bought the system but now my p.o. says 1451 in change, it would be greatly appreciated....and a general question: has anyone received their X1CT with the i7 processor yet?? or are the only shipped carbon touches with the i5?

    Good news, bad news.

Good News: My 1st order tracking info says it went from Shanghai to Anchorage today.

Bad News: My second unit, ordered 12/26/12, just had its projected ship date moved out 12 days. It had an expected ship date of tomorrow 1/26/13 a couple hours ago. Now it jumped to 2/7/13. Something's happened, and it is not good. Until today, both orders were neck and neck, moving only a day at a time over the last 2 weeks.

    Just adding another data point.

Ordered i7/8GB/256GB on 12/23. Original ship date of 1/3. Moved to 1/20 --> 1/6 --> 1/14 --> 1/17 --> 1/20 --> 1/24. On 1/24, was moved out to 2/7. Today, was moved back to 1/27. Fingers crossed about it shipping tomorrow, but I don't have my hopes up.

Also, does anyone have a price match screenshot for i7/8GB/256GB? If so, could you PM it to me? Thanks!!

To anyone who tracked their order and have already received it. When you saw the status:

Louisville, KY, United States 01/26/2013 3:09 A.M. This shipment is warehoused until it is released by Clearing Agency.

How long after that did you get it?

Wondered if anyone could chime in, I am a student in Norway, and have a very good friend that is a student in Wisconsin, Madison. thinking of ordering the X1CT to him for student discount and have him ship it to me.

how do I do this? do I have to register it in his name, or could i register my own name and use his shipping address. thinking of future warranties and stuff. but want to use the lenovo student discounts.

the reason i buy from US is the price. it is literally 1/2 the price from norway.

I believe Lenovo does offer International warranty service. I would talk with them about it. I can see how an American could be overseas for a temporary assignment and need service for a ThinkPad. Those scenarios have to be covered some how.

I was under the impression the warranty was with the machine and not a person's name. I have never registered a ThinkPad in my name. and that is going on 10 years I think.

If I remember right it came to me really fast once UPS started tracking it. I actually hoped it would take longer as I was out of town at the time.

I ordered a custom sleeve from sfbags, shipped today. I will post thoughts once it arrives.

OK.. Lenovo is officially a sneaky, shady, terrible company.. That being said, I'm still excited to get my X1CT.. However, I feel obligated to educate any who are in my situation regarding price matching as to what I went through in case they can avoid it..

I called them up when my order shipped a few days ago. I said that in my notes there should be something there stating that Lenovo would honor my price match.. I even sent them a screen shot of the promotion about 2 weeks ago. This was my 3rd call to get it price matched with out any luck..

They said the screen shot was not acceptable because I had to have built the computer online with the coupon and then screen capture the page. Because I didn't do so, it didn't match my current build and they could only credit me $50. The promotion was for 12%. My build cost me $1700. So it was a good amount more than $50.

I threatened to return the laptop.. They were smug and said fine, but it would cost me a 15% restocking fee. I said no way, because there was the no questions asked return policy. They said that expired. I said bullsh$t, you guys delayed my order by over 7 weeks, and that's why it's expired. They did their typical "'I'm sorry sir, but that is the policy." I asked if I found a comparable coupon if I could use that screen shot now. They said no, because the price match has to be done within 21 days of the order. My response again was bullsh$t.. You delayed my order by 7 weeks, and told me that i could price match at the time of shipping, even when I tried to do it 14 days after my original order. Again, "Sorry Sir, but we cannot do that, it has been way past your order date."

I replied "You are not listening to the words I am saying.. You wouldn't let me price match it until it shipped, because your company delayed my order by almost 2 months, YOU, not ME, made me ineligable, according to your policy. " Finally after repeating that and raising my voice (not yelling), they said Ok, actually you can price match 21 days after shipping. Keep that in mind, anyone trying to price match. They may try and throw some crap at you saying it's 21 days after the order date, which for many was in early to mid December.

After still arguing to honor a price match from a promotion, they recommended i return the laptop and wouldn't charge me a restocking fee.. No thanks, I'm not giving up after all of this inconvenience... So, we landed at being able to price match on a current promotion if I take a screen shot of my online build with the online coupon.

So, does anyone have a current promotion that makes sense? BTW, my build was an i7/8G/240HD.

Ugh.. I was so frustrated with their complete disregard for their policy, and then the slap in the face of their willingness to return the laptop and lack of recognition of their lame business practices of delayed shipping dates, etc..

But.. I'm still excited to get the X1CT. Believe me I've shopped around for an alternative and haven't found one, even with the sub par screen, that matches what i'm looking for.

May the force be with anyone who is currently attempting price match. Be armed with the correct data, and a build sheet when you attempt to get it. Does anyone have a build sheet with a good promotion they can send me or reply with a screenshot that matches my build of i7/8G/240GHD?

    Thx!

    :)

Now i'm trying to build one and see if I can use a coupon code and the 240G SSD isn't an option, so I'm afraid they aren't going to honor whatever coupon because it's not an exact build to the one I ordered.

Man, that is so efing unprofessional, I can't believe they're the same company with all these corporate clients. Maybe (probably?) they have completely separate customer service for the corporate people. I am thinking of trying to bring this to tech media's attention (maybe The Verge would be interested), since all of our terrible experiences can be made into a pretty strong case against Lenovo's complete disregard for its customers (buying one of their top products!). If the word got out, it potentially could be somewhat of a PR disaster for Lenovo and maybe that would get things moving and contracts honored? I can try to look into this but then I will need everybody's help in making a "witness" list with a short concise story of each person's experience (possibly with some screenshots, chat transcripts etc as proof).

With regards to your specific problem, I have the exact same build. The problem is, I also ordered 3 year on-site warranty and an additional charger. I got an email quote that combines the coupon discount for all of these items. So the price just for the laptop is not immediately apparent. Then I have another email, where the prices are teased out separately (with the discount already applied) but it does not display the exact build of the laptop. If nobody else shows up, I can give you screenshots of both of those things and maybe their monkey brains will be able to figure it out. I have a feeling they won't WANT to figure it out. But it's worth a try, right? Oh, and the emails are dated Jan 18th, I don't know if that makes a difference.

Standing on principle is hard. It usually comes with a cost. I think at this point I would recommend ignoring the money "saved" via a price match. You have already burned up the energy associated with $200.

Enjoy the X1 Carbon or if it has a defect, send it back.

Thank you for seeing what I'm seeing!! It's really frustrating and I will totally back you with any campaign you start. I just left a chat session with someone who basically told me the same story as the phone rep. He literally logged outed the chat while I was mid sentence and said "I'm sorry but we are experiencing technical difficulties." And the logged out. Unbelievable.
