Nice! This should cancel out the rumor that the model has been cancelled. :) Waiting for the magic "ORDER NOW" button.

Can someone explain to me why lenovo is putting so much of its resources into making windows 8 a success? The yoga, twist, and now carbon touch are all directed at the tablet style W8 homescreen...how does this love of fingerswiping contribute to the lenovo "get things done" mentality? Does it really have a half-gloss screen? I see the "coming soon" button on the lenovo website...anyone have an idea on the actual specs...? Why would you buy this laptop over lenovo's other products?...Seriously.?

I don't mean to sound like a downer but I really don't see the potential...and I guess I don't care so long as the 2013/2014 T/X/W thinkpads are 100% newly engineered with carbon construction and higher resolution screen options, which could happen...

Lenovo has to put emphasis on the touch based device, because this is where the product road map is going with win 8. Think of MS Windows as the strong current in the water, and Lenovo is a fish that swims in it. Lenovo could swim against the current and waste all its energy/resources, but doing so it is putting itself at risk, so it is easier to swim with the strong current.

I was hoping this might have a better screen than the X1 Carbon. As the screen for the carbon was a major downer.

Does anyone know if the screen on the Lenovo Yoga 13 is the same as the one on the X1 Carbon that people are saying has the screen door effect? Just wondering because they seem to both be IPS and the same resolution..

No. Yoga uses a glossy ips screen while the carbon has a matte tn screen. Different screen sizes as well.

Ok. The reason for my question is that I have the yoga right now and the screen is wonderful. Wondering If the Carbon would be a downgrade.

Our Lenovo rep indicated the X1 Carbon Touch was going to be a semi-gloss IPS screen. I would certainly wait until the production models ship before making any judgements.

    I think you're right..

But crap, it's looking a bit too glossy for my taste. IPS is good to hear, but I hope it's at least less glossy than your avg.

    x1ctouch.jpg

Edit: Unless they changed the look of the X1C Touch, I don't think this is it.
Lenovo South Africa posted it, but it's not the first time their PR has made a mistake.

After having both a carbon (Non touch) and yoga I'd say I enjoy the carbon more. I barely notice the screen door effect. As an overall machine the carbon feels more solid. And I found I never used the tablet mode of the yoga since I already had a 10" tablet that feels more comfortable.

I remember seeing it before on a Chinese site looking up the X1C Touch, but didn't remember what it looked like exactly. Thanks lead_org.

I have a Yoga and at this point don't know if I could do without the 360 hinge. I take advantage of it often, really enhances the Windows 8 experience. I however would prefer to have the Carbon keyboard. The Yoga keyboard is the only flaw for me, serviceable at best.

I feel similarly. But I'm not so married to the hinge. It's convenient at times, and I think when the Windows app store gets better, then it will be even more usable. But the keyboard, the trackpad not centered with the spacebar, no backlit keyboard and/or thinklight, the awkward right-side keyboard layout - those things are annoying me about the Yoga. How do you make use of the Yoga hinge? I find it useful when doing light browsing on the train, but I need a keyboard to do most real work, so...

To stay on topic, I'm ready to pull the trigger on the X1CT I think

I watch a lot of FoxSoccer2Go and CrunchyRoll, the 360 hinge allows for much more comfortable viewing. Also my Yoga spends a bit of time on my coffee table in tablet mode. Windows 8 really requires a touch screen to shine, now that the Carbon is going touch it is a very viable alternative to the Yoga even without the cool hinge because of it's keyboard. I just wish more details of the X1 Carbon Touch would be forthcoming, kind of hard to return the Yoga based on "coming soon".

Hmmm, X1 Touch is now gone off their web site. Perhaps it's buried somewhere, but it was in your face Sunday and listed right next to the otehr Carbon's as Coming Soon.

This company drives me nuts with the games they play with release dates, configurations, etc.

I'm getting frustrated with waiting.. I'm on a Yoga right now, thank god Best Buy is offering returns right now until the end of January. The reality is I'm barely using the touch screen on this now, but hate to not get the latest model of the X1. Is there any reason to get this compared to the current X1, besides the touch screen? Thinking I may just pull the trigger on a non touch.

Difference is Touch and therefore a better version for Windows 8. If you don't care about Windows 8 then there may be no reason to wait. However, it may offer a better screen, glossy but IPS and not TN.

That's all I want to know, is if the X1C Touch comes with an IPS display.

I've been waiting almost a month to buy a laptop just to find out if it comes with one or not.

Not anyone I know personally, but a user on Twitter by the handle of @3cVguy. When I asked, he responded with..

@3cVguy We are a decent sized partner - got confirm today on it from a higher up rep. Announcement next week ship date within month.

So I should have said to take it with a grain of salt. He seems pretty sure though. But now TheVerge just posted this.
Touch-enabled Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 goes on sale from $1,399 | The Verge

Did they slip this out too early? I don't see it available on the US site yet. At least we know the price difference. Pretty expected and reasonable.

    x1_carbon-touch_hero_05-100016792-large.jpg x1_carbon-touch_hero_03-100016791-large.jpg

Looks like we also have shots of the actual product now. Fortunately, they stuck with the all glass, flush display. Fortunately, that plastic trim was the reason why I returned the original X1C. So it's not just the touchscreen I'm buying this for. No mention of an IPS though. I'm glad the rumors of it being the same matte display are true though. I was very satisfied with what it had.

the press release is dated 11 dec, for whatever that's worth.

i'd love some advice, please. i received my base x1c (i5/4gb/128gb) just 3 days ago and am pretty happy with it.
i have no issues with the build quality or the screen. i do have the rubbery trackpad, but i'm assuming everyone is getting rubbery trackpads at this point.

should i decide to exchange the x1c for the touch model, what is the best way to avoid the re-stocking fee?
$150 to touch-enable my laptop seems pretty reasonable.

    thanks,
    bA

If you're exchanging from a less-expensive model to a more expensive one, often Lenovo will waive the restocking fee. I would call support and have them work with you on that--in any case, you're going to need an RMA to send the laptop back in.

There doesn't seem to be official word anywhere on whether the display is the same as in the non-touch version (just with glass on top) or if it is a different panel.

Yeah, I'm afraid it might be looking that way; the news release states, "14 inch HD+ display." If it were IPS they'd tout it like how Asus touts it on their Zenbooks. Why wouldn't Lenovo boast about if it's going to be IPS? I think people are going to be disappointed if all this hype turns out to be simply an X1C but now with a touch panel while retaining all of the shortcomings of the current model.

Looking forward to reading the first test reviews but yes I don't think Lenovo had time to fix any shortcomings of the current model for the touch model.

Too bad Thinkpads are so damn expensive in Europe (or at the very least in France). Just calculated that at present currency rates the top of the line X1 Carbon is 30% more expensive in France than in the US and that's accounting for warranty and tax differences as well as the current 10% Christmas rebate on the French Lenovo web store.

I think I will wait a few weeks to see whether the Zenbook Prime Touch is finally available for purchase or still vaporware before seriously considering the X1 Carbon Touch.

Yup doesn't look like the panel is IPS, X1C Touch is available on the US site. They do offer multiple SSD options up to 256, there are 180 and 240 options. I will have to wait for reviews to find out more of the quality of the panel before placing an order, don't know why they wouldn't put in a panel as good as the Yoga's. You would assume that would be a given.

Interesting how the UX31A touch also just became available for purchase at BB (it's been showing up in the pre-release mode for a while now). More or less the same specs, but with a $1099 tag, and a 2.9lb weight (if the description on the website correct - I am yet to see anyone receive one)

I might actually be the minority here, but I am actually happy they're going with a similar display to the standard X1 Carbon. Besides vertical viewing angles (which are more rare to run into), I was pretty impressed with the display. I'd rather have it since it's not as glossy as the IPS and trust me, display quality is very important to me as a graphic/web designer.

I'm dissapointed in lack of IPS, but I also really didn't want to go below a 14" for an ultra book, and it seems as though this is the only one out there. Add the great key board, build quality and hopefully matte screen and as long as it doesn't look like colors are super washed out, this may work for me. The Asus Touch seems pretty cool as well, but it's 13.3", I know it's not a drastic difference, but it is noticeable.

Hmmm, it's available with Windows 7. I wonder how the touch screen works with W7?

If it's just the same visual quality screen with touch capability added you have to wonder whether it's worth an additional $250 and a 15% weight increase. Definitely want to see some reviews on this thing.

Wondering why it says estimated ship date is 12/21/12 until I get to the hard drive selection screen, and it changes to 12/28/12 without me clicking or changing anything, maybe because I selected the i7? What are the majority of you going to be ordering, the i5 with 4G of RAM or the i7 with 8G? I hoped if I got the i7, that they would include 256 SSD also. ugh.

No need for apologies! I just thought you may have called and were told otherwise. Lenovo is known for inconsistencies and inaccuracies all over.

It's more like a $150 increase spec for spec if I'm not mistaken. If you're more inclined to go with W7, I'd just save your money and stick with the original version. It's cheaper and thinner. The only downside is you don't get the all flush glass screen and instead have the plastic trim around the bezel that users (like myself) had problems with protruding due to weak adhesion. Though they may have fixed this problem.

Including the 256 SSD will push the shipping back to 12/28, all other SSD selections keep the date at 12/21, at least it did for me.

For me a Gorilla Glass covered IPS panel is the ideal setup for a touch screen. Hopefully there will be no screen door effect on this touch screen.
