Can someone please tell me how good/bad the y50 1080p touch screen is if I'm NOT gaming ? .. I mainly use my laptop for work, internet browsing, and occasional photo editing or movie watching ..

It seems that my screen is also has 'ghosting' issue. For those who would like to know: initially screen was fine, but ghosting has appeared after several days of use, as well as light leaking.
And now I am slightly disappointed with this screen, probably will try to replace with LG IPS if find one.

UPD It seems that light leaking is not a problem of panel, but problem of bezel.

I have had the Y50 Touch (1080p version) for about two weeks my experience has been that it is fine for work and internet browsing. I don't edit photos so I can't comment on that but watching movies isn't the greatest (at least on Netflix). Generally speaking, it seems that the viewing angle issue with screen is amplified when viewing dark scenes whether it be in a movie or when gaming. I also think the glossy screen adds to the problem as it is very reflective and I find myself needing to adjust the angle to avoid glare. With that said, I don't notice any screen issues with bright sources like spreadsheets and web pages.

Given the option I probably would have purchased the none touch version (so far I barely use the touch screen) but I was limited to what Best Buy sells and in order to get the i7 version from them I had to go with the touch version. I am going to try an anti-glare screen protector so I can at least keep the screen at an optimal angle.

Hello, so I bought the glossy LG screen: LP156WF4(SP)(B1)

at first it didn't start at all, black screen.

I switched back to the other screen and it worked fine.

I shut it down and tried again.

Now it showed the Lenovo opening screen fine, then it showed like repeating patterns, kind of like an old tv except they were like horizontal patterns, resembling part of the start page or something.

I looked for drivers but couldn't find any.

    ?

edit: reinstalled video drivers and that didn't work.

Nah, sounds more like a hardware problem to me. I could be faulty panel/connector but it sound like a bad connection, especially since you mention that at first try the panel didn't get power then after reconnection it works but with the symptoms like of a bad VGA connector... Try reinserting the connector of the screen in the device again very carefully and exactly the way it should. Check the video guide and follow the instructions..

So i've taken it out and replaced with old one three times, old screen worked every time, new screen just black first time, then lenovo screen works fine then horizontal panels next two times (third time reinstalled video drivers). I don't know why the Lenovo screen works fine though if its hardware?

(also the first little windows loading screen works fine i think it's blue colored...)

Hmm you have a point. Maybe LG panel's connector is bad then...
I continue to think its a hardware related problem because normally the OS(Windows anyway) doesn't need additional drivers for monitors, the generic ones work fine.

I could be wrong, maybe someone that already has replaced their panel can jump in and help you out here, I haven't changed it yet..

I broke down and I'll probably buy and install LP156WF4(SP)( H1)-matte on Friday. I'll report back when/if I do it, I'm a bit uncertain if it will work ok because as far as I know there are no replacements reported(successful or otherwise) with H1 variation of this panels, just B1 and D1.

That should fit. Are you going for them higher contrast ratios?

    LG Display LP156WHA-SPA2 Overview - Panelook.com

    ^That's a great screen, but not 1080p...

What about this one: http://www.panelook.com/LP156WF4-SPU1_LG Display_15.6_LCM_overview_20271.html

Can someone post a close-up of the wire that connects TO THE SCREEN on the 4K model? I really want to compare it with the FHD model and see if it's compatible...If not, I want to see if the motherboard is even the same for both...

Honestly? I wanted to buy locally and due to some issue some members report here - I wanted the shop to change the screen for me, to be sure its done properly or at least have someone to blame in case its not. So in order to do that my choice in shops/items is very limited. I found one which offers the LG B1 and H1 version so I went for it. B1 is glossy so a big no for me, H1 is matte and the guys from the shop say it will work and since they are going to replace it I'm ok to try it.

The H1 version is basically the same as the D1, the only obvious difference I see is that apparently the H1 has lower total consumption, according to Panelook the over difference is over 1W(20%).

I'm trying to find somewhere in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area where I can view and purchase replacement panels. Any suggestions on how I might go about finding such a place?

Alright, done. You can add the matte LP156WF4(SP)(H1) as a compatible panel to the list, it works great and look awesome. I won't be posting pictures because 1) the panel is practically the same as the D1 and 2) I don't have a decent camera.

So as I mentioned I wanted the store that sells the LCD panels to change the panel for me, I preferred it given the fact some of the members here had issues after replacing the screen and that the guy from the shop has replaced probably hundreds of LCDs already and has a lot more experience than I have.
So he did something that honestly it hasn't occurred to me: he opened the laptop bottom panel and disconnected the battery(without pulling it out), actually that was the first thing he did. When I asked him why he said that if the battery is not disconnected(or pulled out on models where that's easily doable) there is current on the edp port and its risky to connect/disconnect it that way, it could damage the LCD, depending on the way one does the connection i.e. if one is lucky to place it perfectly or not so much...
So I'm wondering if the forum members that replaced their screens did that or you replaced the screen with connected battery?

Will it be compatible with the Y50 (1080p nontouch STOCK) ????
I was looking EVERYWHERE for a lower than 1080p resolution screen and that one seems awesome but says eDP (1 lane), hoy many lanes does the Y50 has?

I believe the Y50 uses a 2 lane eDP so the SPA2 probably won't work.

    Hey guys,
So I am strongly considering buying the Lenovo Y50 for my gaming computer, especially as it is currently on a really good sale on Lenovo website. However, obviously the display is pretty terrible, and this is making me unsure of my decision... the LED version is the one I'd prefer to buy as it is significantly cheaper ($250), but I've read that the UHD has a significantly better picture, which I do really care about. Now, I am not very computer savvy, and so here is my question: can you improve the Y50 LCD's display to be equal to or better than the UHD's display, simply by replacing the LCD's screen? Or, would I have to buy the UHD to get a decent colour regardless?
I apologize if this question has already been answered, I wasn't willing to go through the nearly 100 pages of posts in the hopes of finding the answer.
I also realize that to many of you this probably sounds like a stupid question, as you are clearly very knowledgeable on this topic.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Edit: I was also wondering, how/why does simply replacing the screen improve colours so much? I would have thought the colour scheme was built into the computer?
Edit 2: So after reading some other posts, I now realize that the panel and screen are not the same thing... I guess the panel must be the colour panel? Which would explain why changing it can improve the colours so much... obviously. Learning is fun!

iam not an expert but yeah.. as far as i know.. the default or factory panel is TN panel which is the panel supposed to be produce vivid contrast but lower gamut. gamut is known by the percentage, the more gamut that panel have the wider color the screen will show. the TN panel known as having very low input lag this is good for gaming. if you gaming TN panel is really good have a great contrast, vivid vibrant color and low input lag. its supposed to be matched for this kinda laptop lenovo y50. but for this problem is different the panel having really bad bad colour and viewing angle.. all the color are gone/ wash out , brightness are dim . and IMO i fell this for the first time using this laptop but after several days i used to this . and yaeh the other panel that ppls here really wanting is IPS panel, high gamut wide view but high input lag.. you can search on google about input lag.

but for me casual gamer, i cant even tell the difference. but for pro gamer thats really important.

so yeah this laptop has really goood hardware, the body design and everything but SUPER BAD screen if you been using good screen on desktop or before you are using macbook pro retina , you will find this laptop screen is really dumb.

    CMIIW.

guys please give me an advice where is the good seller, because the laptop screen.com cant use visa or master card. anyone buy for lcdtech899 ? and which screen i suppose to get ? i want the B156HAN01.2 but some one tell stories that the defect will show after several week of usage, what about the LG ips matte. please give me an advice thank you guys very much !

The UHD won't be good for gaming. The GPU isn't good enough to run games at 4k, so you'd have to down scale which is bad, and the refresh rate on the UHD screen is only 45hz, which is bad.

Just buy the non touch one (touch eats up system resources) and replace the screen. I guess remember to remove the battery when you do, not sure if the concensus is that that's completely necessary, but better safe than sorry.

I've just successfully replaced the screen on my partner's laptop with a LP156WF4(SP)(B1) and the difference is fantastic. Thanks to everyone in this thread for all the help.

Does anybody know though what exact size the screws are? I have no idea how to size screws, I normally just hunt through the toolbox until I find one the right size but I don't have any and I dropped one of them in the replacement. Everything works fine, I just left one of the top corners unscrewed, but I'd rather have all 4 screws there so I need to buy some replacements but how do I know what to buy? The local hardware store were no help when I took one in to size it up so if anybody could point me to a technical name of the screw type so I can order a packet online I'd appreciate that.

Ok, bought a replacement of the exact same model and it did the same thing.

Thennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn held the power button down extra long and restarted it and it worked. I'm sure I did that before (especially because I took it in and out so many times), maybe I didn't hold it down long enough and it just went into standby or something. Anyway, whatever. Returning the new one tomorrow.

I had both LG(LP156WF4(SP)(D1) ) and AUO(B156HAN01.2) panels (dunno about samsung panel though) and my personal impression is that AUO panel is superior, however quality control is terrible, so it may take couple of returns in order to get a good one. LG panel is also way better than standard one and quality control is better, but panel itself is not as impressing as AUO.
So if you are considering yourself a lucky person I would say: try your luck with AUO panel (you could get one from lcdtech889 on ebay), otherwise buy LG panel (could get one from aliexpress, but don't forget to mention that you want exactly this panel and not 'compatible' or similar)

UPD: I made decision to stick with LG panel in the end, just because I was tired of AUO terrible quality =)

Has anybody found a replacement cable or an adapter to solve the problem of 0.5mm pin pitch on the standard screen and the 0.4mm pin pitch on the possible replacement panels?

Hmm ... So basically youre saying that the AUO panel is not reliable in long-term, even if you get a piece which works initially ?

Isn't there any seller from which I can get a perfect AUO the first time around, even if the price is slightly higher ?

I wouldn't count on it because:

    1) God knows where Ali's Express gets their panels and if they all passed QC. For example you can buy a Thinkpad battery from an unknown Chinese vendor for 20 bucks and getting one from Lenovo for 60 but the one for 20 very possibly won't last more than 6-12 months. Of course they are always exceptions but you get my point.
    2) I'm pretty sure most people change their panels without disconnecting the battery and/or discharging any remaining power. Furthermore the AUO has the highest power consumption and needs the highest current of all compatible panels(I think it uses twice as much than stock panel) which could mean they are more short circuit-sensitive so to speak.

It's fine if you change your panel without disconnecting the battery, but just make sure it's been powered off completely for around 10 minutes and do not connect adapters

I've done it, that's how I reached that conclusion lol! 10 minutes is an arbitrary number, the reason for that would be when you shut your system there're remaining power flowing around the mobo, so not everything is completely powered down even after all the LEDs turn off. so you basically have to wait some time for that to go away. as for panel replacement, I've swapped out the panel various times without disconnect and/or discharging the battery, it's totally fine

Sorry if this has been addressed previously in the threat but I just wanted to give a heads up about bad experiences with ordering the AUO panel. DO NOT order from any company based in New Jersey. Not once, but twice I have ordered a B156HAN01.1 and received a N156HGE-EBB. The listings were from different company names but it all seems to come from the same source...same shipping and RMA slips, etc. My fault for trusting it was an honest mistake the first time but I believe these guys are intentionally deceiving customers with their listings on Amazon/Ebay. I've reported the listings but nothing has been resolved on either side. The "companies" refunded me item cost plus shipping and each time claimed "the only difference is the brands" or something along those lines which of course is BS, otherwise I would have been stuck with a restocking fee. They're unprofessional at best but more likely unethical. Even if they have historically shipped the correct panel I was directly told by their support that they no longer carry the AUO...so why advertise otherwise?

Thanks, I thought as much. Unless you did proper measurements there is no way for you to know there wasn't any power left in a circuit while there is a power source connected to it. The fact that it worked in your case does not mean it would work on everybody.
Anyway, that's my opinion, each to their own I guess..

I'm trying to decide between the B156HAN01.2 and LP156WF4(SP)(D1) to replace my Y50 screen. Has anyone found that the ghosting found with the B156HAN01.2 is a long term issue or does it go away? Also, does the LP156WF4(SP)(D1) have any ghosting or long term effects too?

Ghosting issue is permanent and could get only worse. I am using LP156WF4(SP)(D1) panel for a week or so and don't see ghosting effect. However it could be because my panel does not have this problem or it will appear in the future (really hope that it won't).
As I said before: ghosting has appeared on my B156HAN01.2 only after several days of heavy use.

I am just saying that this particular ghosting issue could appear only after several days of use, I think this point is valid for almost every other IPS panel.

I think that at this point your best shot is AliExpress, BUT make sure that you will ask about dead pixel policy and tell them EXACT part number you need.

    So just an fyi:

I bought the LP156WF4(SP)(B1) , and while in general I'm really happy with it, it does show blacks suuuuuuuper horribly. If watching a dark movie or playing a dark game it's shows them as kind of grey or something, it really bugs me everytime, really takes me out of whatever I'm doing. Anywho, like I said, happy other than that, just thought I'd share.

edit: so just to clarify, I think it's a screen brightness related issue. At 50% brightness or so it's all good in the hood, any more than that and the blacks get greyed out.

    Hi shillydwagon,
I ordered the AUO B156HAN01.2 and I am experiencing rather severe image retention. Anyone else experiencing that? Anyway I can't stand it so I am returning the display, but I was wondering if you were experiencing that on your LG model? I know you had the initial issues but resolved them, but you have probably been using it for awhile now so if you can I would like to know how it's been treating you. It would be a shame to stick with the TN panel but image retention is something I cannot handle lol

    Hello guys!
I hope someone is still following this thread. So I want to replace that ugly display. After reading like 30 pages of this thread I decided to buy LTN156HL01-101 but few moments after I got an idea - what if I just surf the web in search of reviews for THE BEST laptop screen ever (I mean I'm voiding my warranty so why hold back?) and then just buy this exact panel. Following that idea I've found that gigabyte p25x v2 has very-very nice display and since it's a gaming laptop I hope it won't suffer ghosting or anything like that. But there's a minor problem - I've found the laptop but how the heck do I find which panel is inside? I google and googled and googled and still no luck in getting close to model or SN of this panel. Can you guys help me out? I bet there are sites with information but I just don't know where to find them

NVM, I've found it - it's LG Philips LP156WF4 (LGD040E) and it's 40 pin so I can't use it. Will try to buy Samsung 156hl01-102 then

    Hi all!
    Very interesting thread!
    Did someone try the LTN156HL01?
Would it be better than a LG LP156WF4 SP B1?

    Hello!
From what I've found there are at least two models of LTN156HL01 - LTN156HL01-101 and LTN156HL01-102 and the latter is by far superior in terms of color glamut and viewing angles
Regarding LG LP156WF4 SP B1 - I was wrong about it being 40 pin. It's 30 pin connector while LG LP156WF4 SL B1 has a 40 pin one.
I've decided to give LG LP156WF4 SP B1 a try and will lay my hands on it in few days, will provide feedback

    Hey

I have the Chi Mei panel, but I don't have the yellow tint reported by other users. In fact it has a blue tint. "Picture" mode in OneKey theather makes it better and gives acceptable color temperature. Anyone else experience this?

I still have incredibly bad viewing angles and poor contrast, no changes there.

I've finally got my spare part and a courage to void my warranty and boy do I like that!
I've bought LG LP156WF4 SP J1 'cause there were neither B1 nor D1 in stock. As I can see J1 is the same screen but glossy instead of matte (which is fine by me).
Guys let me tell you one thing - this screen is simply marvelous! Original AUO TN panel is just million years away from those beatiful, deep, yammy even colors; sharp lines and wide viewing angles. I've played some games (Titianfall, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, Batman Arkham City) and they look brialliant. Just brilliant. Especially Hearthstone. You must see it guys. It's a different world. Also despite response time said to be 35ms for this panel - there are no traces, or burn-ins or anything that can spoil the fun

In conclusion - I do understand that I can't advice you to go and change that screen voiding your warranty but I really want to, because those $100-150 bucks will be the best you've ever spent.

    Hey guys,
I just replaced my ChiMei with the SPB1, new angles are awesome, could be a bit brighter. But one thing: if I just look at the HardwareID of the PNP-Monitor, it says, I still have the ChiMei inside?! Do I have to override it with some data?

    Thanks in Advance
