Has anyone successfully gone to windows 7? This is the hardest transition to windows 8.1. Not sure if I actually want to keep it or not. But has anyone run into issues by downgrading to windows 7?

So I just received my Y50 4710 with "internal" blue-ray drive, and guess what? It came with an external drive.

They note in their review that the model that they reviewed is a prototype; there might be a small chance that they upgraded the display for the real thing. The HMM shows three different FHD screens in their FRU list on page 93. We can only hope that they are using a different screen than what is in the Bulgarian review.

    Hmmm some additional thoughts.....

This screen looks like vomit, worst screen I have ever seen! My T410 had better color accuracy! And the trackpad blows!

I know I am being harsh but I have been using a MbpR the past couple weeks and I sorta like it.

Take the performance benchmarks and divide all the results by around 3-4. 4x the resolution, 4x the power is needed for the same performance.

I'd have to agree with you, I'm kind of regretting my purchase now. After using it for a few hours, I'm not too happy. My 2007/8 MBP looks better, and feels better... even in its current state of decay :(

Why the heck would you compare it to the screen on a $2000+ laptop? There's $950 separating the base Y50 from the base Macbook Pro. Might as well compare a Toyota to a BMW 5-series. There are clearly going to be tradeoffs everywhere.

Can anyone help me with this?... The native resolution on this computer is 1920 x 1080, but everything looks kinda small to me. So, I changed the resolution to 1600 x 900 and now everything looks the way I want, but the quality isn't the greatest. Is there any way around this?

    That's...that's insane.

Um. Hmm. I mean. My laptop hasn't shipped yet...I figured the screen would at least be better than the one on my 5 year old Dell XPS M1530. It...it is, right? Better than the ancient screen I've grown used to for five years?

What about my current desktop monitor, is the Y50's as good as this: http://www.amazon.com/ViewSonic-VX2...402623345&sr=1-1&keywords=viewsonic+led+1080p

I wouldn't take those measurements THAT seriously. From videos and pictures of the Non-Touch Anti-Glare Y50, I think it's pretty clear that the screen is mediocre but not absolute trash. It's fine for most gamers, though definitely not for graphics professionals. Personally, I'm happy I decided against getting it: the screen on the Touch model looks nicer. But opinions on even the matte screen seem mixed instead of universally awful.

I had a dell 1750 from about 4 years ago and honestly the color on that screen is much more vivid than this screen and doesn't look as grainy. Kinda wanna return it and get another dell but I don't know what else to get

The screen is not bad at all.
I use an MBP 13 too and don't really find anything bad with the colors and sharpness in comparison.
The matte finish really is extremely useful and makes a world of difference even indoors.
The only thing at fault is the poor viewing angles, but that wouldn't matter if you sit head on in front of it.

Are you kidding me? The color and sharpness are worlds apart the Mbp is way way better in terms of screen, I know pictures cannot do justice but you should be able to see the color difference between the two

    Now for the positives....

The keyboard is solid with a nice feel, Lenovo has always been good in this department.
Battery life I got 3h 25m running full brightness HD video, not good but not terrible either
Speakers, while they are not too loud they do sound great
WiFi - Works great most of the time, I do get dropouts but have became used to this with prior Lenovo products
Heat - This baby runs cool, I am in Las Vegas and it is 100 degrees outside running Skyrim in Ultra I peaked at 73c and the fan is hardly noticeable.

Crap. Was that with your Y50 at full brightness and maxed contrast? The color is so dull and muted, and the clarity is not nearly as good...

With all these new purchases, has anyone tested out the fps they're getting with and without the a/c adapter?
For me the only true lingering problem is how with the laptop is not connected to the battery, there's a massive frame rate drop and I look at the nvidia control panel, nothing switches there when I plug in the battery or remove it and I even switched everything to prefer high performance.

    That is what I'm saying,
If you look at them head on, it will not look that bad.
The pic you've taken is from an angle so the colors looked washed out.

Same wallpaper and both laptops at full brightness.
    Shot head on.
You can see that the difference is not that profound.
If you turn down the brightness a notch or two on the Y50, the colors look even better.
But still in the end you are comparing an IPS panel to a TN, this difference is expected.

If you can tweak the colour settings, you can make it look better.
I found that the "Picture" setting in the one key theater has the best colors.

I find it hilarious that there are people who read 100 times in this forum about how the screen is, see quite a few video reviews and pictures of it, then BUY the y50 anyway just to say "omg the screen is awful"

I think what he meant is since 4k is 4 times more pixel than 1080p, so what you could do is
take any 1080p test result and divide it by 4 to get the idea of how good/bad it runs 4k.
Although I doubt the benchmark runs on linear scale like that.

Hm, I recently ordered a Y510p instead of the Y50 because I foresaw this kind of stuff while it's still new. I really hope Lenovo didn't give me one of the new Y50 screens instead of an old Y510p one.

the angle might have contributed to the loss of colors/sharpness of the Y50 and even considering that you're comparing that to a macbook.
everybody knows that macbooks have one of the BEST if not THE BEST screens around.
that's the compromise you have to accept for having a laptop that is way cheaper.
you can't expect to get one device that is way cheaper and yet more premium. that's just not how the world runs.

still torn if the 2GB vs 4GB of VRAM would still be as negligible as it is today after 1-3yrs.

I don't see how people are defending the screen on this thing. 57% and 43%? That's awful by any standards. Yes, I realize that's a sacrifice that is made to keep the price as it is, but that doesn't make it any better. You get what you paid for.

Doesn't matter if you personally can't notice it, because there are people that can, and unless someone with a y50 finds out that the percentages are different from that review, the numbers show that the screen really is "that bad"

Hopefully the 4k version will be an improvement

I am immensely satisfied with the entire laptop.
Looks slick, Solid build quality,Zero fan noise, Games like a beast and still manages to stay cool.
And the matte display helps a lot.

The only think I'm displeased with are the poor viewing angles.
Will try to find a replacement IPS screen and install it...

    1) Might want to check your router settings and see if it's switching bands, the 3160 is not the best wifi card.
2)Most gaming laptops do that to save battery life, they lower clocks to save power. Doesn't this have battery boost to limit frame rates when on battery power?

So some people on here harping on the display had me take a second look at the laptop and do some more "thorough" research. Since I plan on getting the 4K model very soon, I looked at some hands on video and saw that the angles for the 4K touch doesn't appear to be that bad. I can't say for sure obviously but from what I gather that's the model everyone should get with screen concerns.
