not much for playing games. most of the 3A titles don't require much from CPU and i5-4200H is good enough for that and daily usage. however, if you play more online games such as WoW or league, which if you do, I'll be very disappointed, that puts more load on the CPU rather than GPU, though i5 4200H can handle those easily

Anyone know of any resellers I can buy the high end Y50 from? (not 4k) I've got one ordered from lenovo but the ship date is now July 10th and I've already waited a month. Also the klick ebay store ran out of the high end model.
-
there's amazon or you can email brian, which'll probably give you more discounts

We are sold out of that model, and don't expect anymore in until mid July. -

Have you considered buying the high end one with the 1TB HDD, and just swapping out to an SSD? -
Amazon redirects to lenovo for the high end model.
-
Any suggestions on a comparable 512gb msata ssd for around $250? I'm not sure which brand lenovo puts in theirs.
-
lenovo uses an OEM version of samsung evo, you can get that yourself or crucial mx100
-
I found this video on youtube comparing the screens between the y50 (matte screen), a lenovo w520, and an NEC Monitor. It's not much; you can ignore the screen capture (middle) part of the video as that doesn't show anything about the physical screen quality.
-
You're going to want to buy a normal 2.5" sata since the Y50 doesn't have an msata slot.
This is essentially the drive that Lenovo uses. It's $250 on Amazon.
Amazon.com: Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE500BW: Computers & Accessories
A good alternative would be the Crucial MX100 or M550 -
Weird I was told by a lenovo rep the 512gb ssd they use is msata. Anyway so the middle tier models have a 1TB hdd and 8gb ssd so I'm guessing it has 2 slots for harddrives?
-
Nope. The 1tb + 8gbssd is a hybrid device made by Western Digital that adds an 8gb ssd to the 2.5" drive...the 8gb is not user accessible, and is similar in function to Seagate's Momentus XT. There is only one SATA3 connector in the Y50. No MSATA.
Here's the 1tb + 8gb SSD Drive:
-
I see. Okay I might grab the 512gb EVO unless I can find a Pro version for a good price so I can have MLC instead of TLC. Thanks for the answers.
-
Not sure how much you interchange drives between devices but if you want to add more inter-compatibility you could get an msata with a 2.5" adapter. That way if you got a future laptop with a spare msata slot, you could use the same drive. Since M.2 is becoming more popular now, it might not be worth the added cost to you though. Just an option I thought I'd throw out there. I bought a 256GB msata for my y500 a while back and have been stuck with it since I returned it. But now I'm able to use it in my desktop and current laptop through the 2.5" bay.alaskajoel likes this.

Opinions on ordering form best buy? Good idea or nah?
-
So anyone know how/why best buys model is listed as only 4.9 pounds? Lenovo claims the nontouch is 5.3 and the touch is 5.7, so I'm not sure how best buy cut off .8 pounds...
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk -
It's probably a typo/mistake on the Best Buy webpage.
Speaking of the weight, if someone has a small scale and can provide us with the real (and not estimated/specs) weight, will be great. -
Also seeing that the Best Buy model comes with a "Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive". Is this external?

Yes....... -
You will be happy to learn that I don't play those games
Thanks for replying.

My non-touch (with 840 evo instead of a 1tb spinner) weighs in at exactly 85.2oz....or 5.325lbs according to my mail-room scale
-
is that with the adapter?
-
Thanks for confirming! I am wondering if the touch panel adds almost half a pound as Lenovo claims.
-
It probably does since they omit the edge to edge glass on their non-touch models. I'll weigh my buddy's when it comes in on Friday if someone doesn't do it before then.
-
um, no. The adapter adds another 19.7 oz (1.23lbs)
-
Any thoughts? I want to order it tonight if it is is actually as good as it sounds.
-
FWIW, The newegg version also has dragon...and the Nitro pro is just a 30 day trial. I'm not sure why their weight is so far off, but if you want the touch version, It appears to be a good deal if you want touch. Although, if the screen is the same (but with a multi-touch glass layer) it may be even worse. I wouldn't want this display with a gloss....it would be a reflection nightmare, and if your perfect viewing angle happens to induce reflection from overhead lights, you're busted.
-
This has to be wrong, right? The model from Tiger Direct lists an FHD IPS display:
Lenovo Y50 Intel Core i7 16GB Memory 1TB HDD 15.6 Notebook Windows 8.1 64-Bit - 59425651 at TigerDirect.com -
Yeah, I'm skeptical. It is one of the few I've seen pre-configured with 16gb DDR3 and 4gb vRam.
-
I think the only hope of IPS is in the 4k version.

Also, I'm reminded of a review @ guru3d talking about the 4gb vRam...
The only exception to this I have found is a heavily modified Skyrim installation...I've chewed through upwards of 2.5gb at 1080p with my GTX780 (in my desktop) but I've found that on the Y50, the GTX860m core starts losing steam before memory usage gets up that high on Skyrim. In other words, before you need that much vRam on this card, you'll more likely be reaching the limits of the core.pupster likes this. -
Is there a way to make it so that I can type while I use my trackpad at the same time? It's pretty annoying, any help is much appreciated
-
Does anyone here have the touch model?
-
Hey all ! I was wondering about the screen on the Y50. I know it is comparatively bad, but all I have ever used is a medium end 1366x768. What would i think of the screen? Also which is better for color and viewing angles, matte or touch? Thanks
Oh, and if Lenovo says "this unit will ship in 10-12 days" are they going to move it back on me like they have to others. I need it in less than 3 weeks -
I believe the trackpad that comes with the laptop is made by Synaptics. If that is the case, search up on google "Disable Synaptics PalmCheck". On my other laptop with a Synaptics trackpad, this allowed me to use the trackpad while typing.

It'd be nice if the threads were combined - kind of silly to have two threads going at the same time dedicated to information on Y50's ...alaskajoel, Sandbag, Incontro and 2 others like this. -
I thibk one was supposed to be an owners thread.

The computer says Elan for the touch pad. Haven't heard of it before, but it's definitely not the Synaptics I'm used to.

Hello..Is the N550JK any better than Y50 in colour reproduction?
I know the viewing angle difference (which is not a problem to me) but I read a review on notebookcheck and saw it covers only 47% AdobeRGB?? anyone knows the sRGB coverage?
I'm not sure whether I misread English isn't my first language.. -
So I just got my Y50 from Lenovo about two days ago (the $1,159 one with the 4710 i7, 2gb 860m, 8gb RAM non-touch). Now, I'm seeing pretty good deals from Best Buy ($1,149 touchscreen Y50 with 7260) and rumors of a better IPS screen on Tiger Direct ($1209 for 16 gb RAM, 4gb VRAM, possible IPS). Should I return the one I have and get one of the other models? Or should I wait it out until specs/prices are confirmed so I know what I'm really getting? I don't really need a laptop until the new school year starts in September, so I'm willing to wait a month or two if needed.
-
sRGB is 57%. The N550jk will definitely have a better screen. GPU is significantly worse though
-
Wee bit off topic here, but,
Is 60c hot for the CPU to be running? -
57%? You mean sRGB of Y50 right? I asked on the N550JK...I can't find a proper test anywhere..
Yeah GPU I know but I won't be playing very graphic intensive titles..
I don't see a reason to go for Asus unless it has a significantly better screen in terms of colour reproduction.. -
57% is for Y50. Don't know numbers for Asus but I'd think itd be significantly better tbh

Idle or load temp?
60c in itself is not hot at all (and very good if you achieve that figure while gaming). -
This has apparently been load temp on this laptop. The GPU too remains very cool. This is what impresses me the most about this laptop.
-
where did u get that tiger direct rumor
Sent from my HUAWEI P6-U06 using Tapatalk -
I saw it too on their website. I emailed them asking if its a typo or if its actually IPS. They have yet to respond. I ordered the best buy model. It'll be here the 19th (estimated) so I'll get to test that one out for y'all.

It's on TigerDirects site under specs for this laptop,
