Alright- can't wait any longer with college
coming this fall. Going to get the 4710 y50 from the lenovo website
-
No 4k touch screen? That may be a deal breaker for me and/or others. I would easily trade the external DVD Drive for that.
-
Anyone know if I could replace the 500gb sshd in the y50 with this?

Lots of people, myself included are waiting for the top-tier 4K Touch version, meaning the i7 4710, 512SSD, 16GB RAM, nvidia 860M 4GB and hopefully along with the Intel 7260 Network Card.
If some of the current owners can report some solid real-life battery stats, like times on Internet Browsing, Video Streaming, Movie playing, gaming etc, will be every appreciated. Anyone is getting ~4 hours of generic use on the Y50 as Lenovo is officially reporting? -
Almost what I'm looking for, except I don't care as much about the SSD. I'm planning to replace it with a 2TB since I know it's gonna get full real fast.
-
which part are you having trouble?
-
Damn a 2tb ssd?

like I said many times before, the model number indicates it's a PLS panel so your rep is right. For anyone else who wants to see a similar panel, just look at gs60's display
-
Which GS60 because the 3k panel isn't that great apparently.
-
Hey! anyone know if this case would fit the lenovo y50? Thanks in advance!

My impressions after a couple hours with the Y50:
I like the design - it's pretty slick to look at. It's not too heavy but not light like a typical Ultrabook. The keyboard types well, although I typed better on the Razer Blade. It's similar in keyboard flex with the Ghost Pro, which is still good. The trackpad is an improvement over the previous models. It's not as good as Asus or Razer's trackpads but certainly better than what MSI did with the Ghost Pro. Mine felt a little loose like there was a little play in the trackpad - I think it might be a defect, it's tough to tell.
The screen is the worst on a laptop I've seen in a while. I said this earlier and I stand by it. I played Skyrim for about an hour and constantly noticed the discolorations in the corners of the screen. It was more apparent on black screens but I could notice discoloration with pretty much any texture that contained black. The center of the screen looked fine, it was mainly the edges. I thought IPS glow was bad, but this is worse. After playing for an hour, I went back and played Skyrim on my Q550LF(the backup laptop). It was as if my trusty $600 laptop was worth $500 more because it looked incredible in comparison. The *only* thing I can hand to the Y50 is the response time seemed a little faster, but that's a typical advantage of TN over IPS. Other than that, the screen just plain ruins the laptop in my opinion.
I was impressed with the heat dissipation and the noise. Comparing to the Ghost Pro and Razer Blade, the Y50 is FAR quieter. I used the same save in Skyrim that I tested the other two laptops and I barely noticed the fan changing speeds. It got warm but nowhere near as hot as the RB and GS60. Obviously, this is an 860M and the others are 870M, but the performance was close enough that I would prefer the Y50 over the other two machines if it game to gaming experience, heat and noise alone.
The sound on the Y50 is far superior to the Razer Blade and the GS60. The speakers are louder and the subwoofer helps prevent the tinny sounds typical in many laptops. Some people could give two craps about this but there are some, like myself, that would prefer to not wear headphones if possible. While I like the sound, it's not the best I've heard by any means. My Q550LF still blows the Y50 away in volume and fullness of the sound. I went back and forth between the two today to be sure and I liked the Q550LF each time. I did a bass test on both machines and the Y50 was able to hit as low as 100 Hz. The Q550LF was able to go as low as 65Hz. This is a little unfair because the Asus subwoofer is external and the laptop has 4 speakers, but in my opinion, I would still rather use the external sub if it meant better sound. Still, the Y50 sounds awesome.
Not many other thoughts since I didn't have it for very long(it's my friend's laptop, not mine). In the end, I can say without a doubt now that I will not be buying the non-4k version. To me it's a step down from the y510p and that's a pretty thick laptop. I'm basing this off the screen alone since I think it's trash. There are much better options out there and I would rather deal with my Q550LF for another year rather than have the Y50(yes a 745M GPU). Hopefully the 4k version has a better screen or I'll be settling for the N550jk or waiting for the GX or NX500.fragpic, LanceAvion, liteon6x and 2 others like this. -
the base one with 860m
-
Q550LF has good screen but bad performance and vice-versa for Y50. Comparing the screen alone is just pointless.
Do advice your friend to properly calibrate the screen too since you didn't.heibk201 likes this. -
Soo... does anyone know if it's possible to fit a 9.5mm HDD inside this thing?? Really tempted to get the WD Black2 Dual.
-
you can't, unless you can get a sand paper and sand 2.5mm off the case
-
There's an extra bit of foam padding that kept the 7mm enclosure in place. Could it not be squeezed to allow a thicker HDD?
-
It is possible.
-
3 things my friends
1. Can someone please confirm if the y50 4k has an ips or a tn panel ?( the confusion is killing me )
2. Even if the y50 with 4k is an ips, does it have better display ?
3. I have a 2nd option to get an msi gs60 ghost pro with 3k but i dont have enough money for it and have to wait. Does the 3k msi laptop has better screen and better display ? is it ips or tn ?? -
1. From the screen model number, it indicates a samsung pls display which is Samsung's ips
2. The closest you can look forward to as of now is the normal gs60's display
3. gl with the heat -
I will also be very interested in battery tests. For me, I would like to see a battery test with just Word and perhaps around 10 tabs open on Chrome or IE. I would expect at least 5 hours since Optimus should delegate those tasks to the Intel GPU. I would also an HD video looping rundown test. (I would really appreciate if multiple people could report these with battery saver enabled and with high performace selected).
-
Plat, I am confused with one thing: so is the 4710 y50 display considered a 4k model? Obviously since 4710 is in the 4000s it would seem so but after doing some research on other threads and articles, I am starting to doubt what the numbers represent.
Also, would it be appropriate to install a samsung Evo ssd despite my model already having a 512ssd? Thanks -
4k refers to the resolution a monitor
4710 refers to the processor which is of the fourth generation -
As it was shown earlier that the ssd model is a Samsung evo, has anyone tried Samsung rapid mode on the ssd versions yet? Just want to confirm that it will work

*not my video* -
Thanks so much. So that means on the lenovo website non of the models there are 4k while it's satellite providers have 4k configured models? Wouldn't it, like others have thought, be better for lenovo website to hold the main attraction of 4k models while distribution it's older models to satellite providers? I really want to have keep the lenovo for a long time so I want it to have good specs of its time but because of college coming up I might have to make a hasty decision. What I want to avoid is to find out shortly after receiving my model that 4k res models are released officially. Now I know that a screen shouldn't be the ultimate decision but I wouldn't want my vision to be impaired because of the poor and distorted display. Everything else seems very respectable: the sound specs, processor, graphics processor, battery life ( for college lecture durations), fan noise and heat for its price value ( in my primitive tech mind).
-
So are you happy with the laptop overall? Or is the screen such a deal breaker that you hate it entirely?
Seeing as I doubt you'll be constantly comparing the monitor on the Y50 to others constantly. -
so, the 4k version will have a significantly better display ???
-
Well.. define significant..? It will be definitely better if its IPS, but if its a poor kind of IPS (low gamuts) it wont probably that significant as well..
-
Ahh, so this is exactly what will I expect in my case since the other laptop has a 95% gamut screen like mine does.. hmmm.. nice video
-
Oh lol I forgot to mention this isn't my video, I just found it on YouTube.
-
Yes I know the performance is worse , my point is I could not use that screen for my daily use machine. Maybe if it was 2008 still but I think we're past paying good money for crap screens.
I used a colorimeter calibrate it. What way do you suggest because that is how professionals calibrate their screens? Manipulating settings through software is not calibrating and will ultimately crush your contrast ratio.
Another thing I forgot to mention is that the touch screen's model is AUO36ED while another user reported a screen model of CMN15C4, which is probably the matte version. It's possible non-touch users have a better screen. -
Color comparison:
Lenovo Y50 Another Color Monitor Comparison - YouTube -
The screen is probably the single most important part of any computer. It's what you're staring at whenever you interact with it.
-
Since you have to wait for the GS60 anyways, wait for the 4k y50 and see what people think. People should have it in about a month. I'm not sure if the 3K GS60 panel is PLS like the non-3k version but reviews pointed out the 1080p panel had better color accuracy and the 3k panel.

You could always pay a higher price for similar performance laptops with a better screen. The main selling points of Y50 are performance-packed, slim-profile, good cooling and cheap price. You can try looking for a similar laptop with a better screen in the same price range if screen is that important to you, or you can also replace the screen yourself which in a China forum someone already replaced with an IPS screen.
Also, the screen is not really that bad especially for those who had a TN screen on their last laptop. It's only significant if you've accustomed to a much better screen and compare Y50 to that.bva91 likes this. -
You can always get a similar performance laptops with a better screen from MSI, Clevo/Sager, Asus, Gigabyte etc if the screen is your #1 deal-breaker and you're unsatisfied with Y50's, but at a cost of higher price.
Alternatively you can replace the screen by yourself, too.
Every laptops come with pros and cons, it's impossible to find a perfect one but you can always find one that suit the most of your needs.bva91, heibk201, PsylentStorm and 1 other person like this. -
I see your point but the fact that it has a cheap screen no longer means it has a cheap price to me. Now I would look at it as overpriced, especially coming from the Y510p prices. To each his own though. If you like the screen, that's great for you and you have a lot more tolerance than I do. My only point in posting what I did was to give some options for people to compare it to. Sure more expensive laptops have better screens, but so do cheaper ones. And there are more coming out in the coming months that will most likely have a better screen. For some people, this will be their laptop for the next 3-4 years, so it might benefit them to be informed on what they're spending their money on. I look at my screen daily, so I found it somewhat important to me.PickleHead5314 and fantasticzig like this.

Hey so I've been following these threads for several months but joined because I have a question.
The screen on the Y50 sounds god-awful. My question is, is the Y40 screen any better?
And how much worse performance wise would the Y40 be? -
Oh I agree, it is indeed about what you're willing to sacrifice at this price point.
For example, you can get a Clevo for about the same price, with the same specs, but a much better screen (I got a Clevo builder to price match the Y50). In that case, you're giving up the slim, sexy looks.
For me, I'd easily go with the Clevo, as for me, screen > looks/thinness. For others, it would be the opposite.
The key thing is for people to know what they're sacrificing. It is important that people know that at this price point, you aren't getting a perfect laptop. People were excited about the Y50 because the specs/price/looks seemed too good to be true. People need to understand that in order to achieve the current price point, Lenovo sacrificed a few things (namely screen quality). -
I know I've mentioned this before, but for those who are ok with foregoing the slim, sexy looks in exchange for a better screen (not to mention no bloatware, and a better wifi card), look up the Eurocom Shark. The exact same configuration will only cost you an extra $34 (for the shipping). The Shark is a Clevo, so you get all the ups and downs that go with those.
I'm really not trying to get a Lenovo vs Clevo war started up, but for those who really like the specs/price but are dissappointed with the screen (and don't care too much about looks), there are alternatives.
In the meantime, I'm still waiting for my Y50 to ship. -
How would one go about changing the screen? Would the new screen have to be made by Lenovo, or could I buy one made by another manufacturer?
I really like the design, looks, thermals and keyboard of this laptop, and the crappy screen is the only thing that is making me think twice about getting one. It would be a great comfort to know that I would be able to change the panel if necessary. -
i'm so tired of waiting, god the irony...
-
There was no need for LENOVO to use a below average screen, they could have charged a little extra on the base price ($50)and everyone would be happy.
LENOVO did a disservice for early adopters and would be in a better position if more people were satisfied with the screen , now people will be hesitant and might look elsewhere first.
They might also have sacrificed future sales.fantasticzig likes this. -
I personally agree. I'd be happy to pay $1200 instead of $1149 for a better screen.
But my point still holds - in order to get this laptop for $1149, sacrifices had to be made. At this price point, you can't get these specs, a great screen, slim form factor, no bloatware, stable wifi card... -
A few pages back people were saying the problem was the non touch one and that the touch one was decent because it "popped more" lol.
Touch or not, if youre getting the FHD model, expect to be disappointed with the screen or best case scenario, tolerant of it. I think there's been enough testimonies at this point to make that statement.fantasticzig likes this. -
I posted this a while back but I was also interested in the y50 initially. I'm not a gamer so the graphic card wasn't the high selling point for me, but I do a lot of image post-processing, so a very nice screen was important. I ended up going with the N550jk. I don't have it yet but the screen definitely seems better than the y50. Its maybe not as slim but close, and you can fit 2 hdd in there by removing the optical drive. Just thought I'd mention it again in case others might have seen this model.
Although all this talk about bad ips screens has me wondering how good the one on the n550jk is. I guess I'll know soon enough!
I had second-thoughts now that the "new" y50 with 4k will apparently have ips displays, but I imagine the costs will be too high anyway, plus I have no interest in such a big a resolution for a small laptop. -
Can you please mention the downs of a clevo? I still havent decided to go with y50 or sager...
-

Just a heads up for anyone buying this, be careful of any case you decide to get for it. I got this one and the laptop fits, but it's a pain in the a** to get it in and out and the zipper is hard to pull around the laptop.

I'll probably end up getting a 17.6" case, unless I can find a roomy 15.6" laptop case.
