How long does it usually take for Lenovo to send the Y50 to shipping? I ordered mine 3 days ago through Lenovo Canada on phone and there's still no estimated shipping date on the order status page. Getting really impatient :(

For all the other Canadians out there, the Lenovo Canada site has put up 3 UHD models.

Personally, I'm going to wait for someone to review the 4K version before I pull the trigger on either this or something nicer.

Very interesting. The 5-7 business days estimated delivery date has to be absolute bs though. Lenovo Canada still hasn't delivered any base models to my knowledge and people ordered those ages ago. The top 4K model with 512GB SSD looks like a pretty good buy and I would probably go for that one if I hadn't already purchased from Klick. Notably, however, it lacks Touch while costing roughly the same as Klick's base Touch model + 512GB SSD + 8GB RAM stick. The more I think about Touch, the more I feel it's a pretty cool addition that no Macbook can boast of and that can make things like scrolling, rotation, and zooming feel extremely natural regardless of touchpad quality. In any case, I think Touch functionality and an extra 30 minutes of battery life (due to lower resolution and TN instead of IPS) are more important to me than a 4K resolution or slightly more accurate colour reproduction or better viewing angles. Coming from my 4-year-old apparently 50% sRGB 13.3" TN screen laptop, I doubt I'll be disappointed by the 15.5" FHD glossy display on the Y50.

Plus getting the Y50 from Lenovo Canada would take ages and would be frustrating to no end all over again. Trying to purchase the matte 512GB SSD Y50 from them was a nightmare and I'm glad I dipped. Oh, and I'll have the superior American keyboard instead of the silly bilingual one all Canadian laptops have!
My base Touch Y50 is now at my house (!) so I'll have a chance to confirm all of my speculation soon enough; can't wait to get home and open it!

I don't think enough people are factoring in battery life into the equation, to be honest, or maybe nobody else here cares about it. The battery life on the Y50s with TN panels is already just barely enough to watch a regular 2 hour movie (on max brightness) without having to plug in. Lenovo really should have included a 6-cell battery instead of this lame 4-cell one. But at least the computer can be used to watch a movie on a bed without annoyance. Ad the Y50 Touch is very bright which is also great for movie-watching. Now, a 4K display would burn that same battery noticeably faster and a 4K IPS display would burn it significantly faster. Based on what I've heard, maybe as much as half an hour. I watch a lot of movies so the difference between 2-3 hour battery life and 1.5-2.5 hour battery life is pretty significant to me. If the 4K display is indeed IPS it could mean even a typical-length movie would get cut off at the end unless you plugged in. Which would be EXTREMELY irritating! And having to turn down brightness to watch a movie is super lame and reduces the experience...That's the time maxed brightness is most important, in my opinion.

Anyways, when people actually get their 4K Y50s we can all run battery stress tests and compare the numbers. But the FHD TN versions are definitely safer bets if eeking out some extra juice is important.

    Hey There,

I'm in the same boat, I was ordering through Lenovo Canada but between the delays and the bilingual keyboard I cancelled. Where did you order your Y50 from if not Lenovo site? I'm having difficulty finding any alternatives anywhere close to similar in price range.

With the extreme rarity of decent reviews for this laptop I cannot wait for you to give us some more info.

    Thanks

I don't know about others, but watching movies isn't my primary goal when I have this thing unplugged. I'll have it plugged in for that. My main uses when this thing is on battery would be non intensive tasks like work or internet surfing. 2,3 hours, honestly doesn't really make a difference to me. Still all crap battery times. Gladly trade in 30 mins for a higher quality screen.

Also, your complaint about turning down the brightness seems rather counterintuitive to your argument. You complain about that, saying it would "reduce the experience." So having terrible color reproduction and discoloration near the edges doesn't detract from the experience...?

I got mine from Klick's Ebay listing ( link) and it's arrived in 5 business days despite being an international delivery (I live in Toronto). They have one more Y50 Touch base model left right now, as well as some other Y50 models. Ordering from Klick is definitely much more satisfying than ordering from Lenovo. They shipped it out on the day I ordered and I got to track the laptop as it moved towards me, lol.

If you buy from Klick though, definitely email Brian (KlickOnline here on Notebookreview) and ask for a Notebookreview member discount. I got my Y50 Touch at a significantly lower price than it is currently listed for. I understand they raised prices because their stock started decreasing but I'm sure he could give you a deal. He will also answer any questions you have super quickly; Klick really has great service and isn't sketchy at all.

I'll be posting a short review in the next few days!

Honestly, super accurate colour reproduction doesn't bother me in movies. It could be because I've never experienced a wide-gamut display, but I find that one gets used to slight colour differences very quickly when using a single display (like I do when watching a movie). It's not like reds look like greens or vice versa, lol. I was worried about some colour muddiness on the lower-quality matte screen (due to the cheaply done matte effect), which would indeed annoy me, so I dipped on the Non-Touch Y50 and got the glossy Touch to be safe. Do I care if the red I see is actually slightly darker or lighter than the movie-makers intended? No, not really. As long as it is bright and pops out at me. A ton of movies purposefully alter colour appearance anyways (sepia tone in The Godfather II, for example) and another tiny adjustment really isn't noticeable to me. Same goes for games. You guys are making it sound like colours will look completely random and unrecognizable, lol. That really isn't the case...

Would I prefer a high gamut display? Sure, it would be a great bonus. But it's not worth it if I completely lose the ability to watch movies unplugged on my bed, lol. Of course, this is all my personal preference and opinion.

Anyone knows any external battery that would power the y50 for a bit longer :D obviously not for gaming... For standard web browsing and watching movies etc!

    Cool. :)
I noticed on the Ebay listings it says Klick is currently away and not processing anything until July 30th. Hopefully if you email Brian he can still respond to you before then though. I usually got responses within half an hour. I very, very much doubt you'd be able to get a Y50 from Lenovo Canada sooner anyways. They're ridiculous. And ordering from Klick or from the US in general gets you the normal American keyboard, which you said you wanted.

The estimated shipping date doesn't work in Canada (check RFD.) As for an estimated shipping date; I ordered mine June 3rd, they keep pushing mine back (I last checked via CS and got a shipping date of June 26 (it was June 24 a week earlier.)) The CS rep said that they were having a parts shortage and since that was (now) resolved they are starting manufacturing (BS!)

Just wanted to make a correction - it's June 30th, not July 30th. Our shop is closed for holiday next week .. I'll still be around to answer emails and process orders during that time, but we won't be able to ship anything until June 30th / July 1st.

    Here's hoping!

Yep, being Canadian != French speaking. I realize companies build laptops with bilingual due to Gov't kickbacks but really... they should understand the demographics of their consumer base in each location and that the vast majority Canadian laptop users HATE bilingual keyboards. It just costs them business that I'm sure out-weighs the gov't kickback.

Hmm I think its not a choice but mandatory that the keyboard be bilingual? Or at least the documentation?

Edit: It probably varies province by province, but I guess they figured if they are to do it bilingual for one province, might as well do it for all.

    1. it actually doesn't whether they used a 4 cell or 6 cell. gs60 used 6 cell 52whr battery which is no better than a 54whr 4 cell battery. the reality is they both suck LOL

    2. all 4k models are glossy, and on battery you can just tune it down to 1080p. it's not like the res matters when you are on battery, because you'll be limited with what you can do anyways.

    3. just a suggestion, maybe watch movie more on plugged...?

I am still having doubts on the gtx 860m with the 4gb vram, I know it has been confirm in a youtube video that it is definitely has a maxwell architecture but I just can't believe it, can someone just change the gm107 code which is the code for maxwell? I trusted notebookcheck.net and most website confirmed that there are 2 different model of gtx 860m which are kepler and maxwell. So it is just seems weird or fishy or something. Anyone agree? Because it is 128 bit so the max vram amount must 2gb right? I read this is some website. And some people would say kepler simply wont fit, is it make sense? Did anyone already did a benchmark on the 4gb vram version?

    @KlickOnline:
Right, June 30th is what I meant, haha.

    @heibk201:
    1. There's no way battery size isn't a factor. All else equal, more cells is better to have. Obviously crappy 6-cell batteries exist, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be even crappier with 2 cells removed. What I don't understand is why gaming laptops can't include larger, higher quality batteries like on a Macbook or a Dell XPS 15. It's like they decided that since no laptop battery can handle gaming for long anyways, they might as well use a super crappy, cheap battery. But laptops are used for much more than just gaming even if they are technically "gaming laptops".

    2. I know all 4K models are glossy; so is the Y50 Touch. What's your point? Regarding changing resolution: doesn't it take more battery power to light all of the pixels on the 4K screen anyways? How does scaling solve the problem of needing to individually light up more points? Scaling is done by the OS but the screen itself still has to light up every pixel regardless of what resolution you set it to. Anyways, the biggest battery eater should be the panel type, if it is indeed IPS. The two pros of TN panels are faster refresh rate and less battery consumption - both are pretty damn important for a gaming computer like this that already has lousy battery life and for which image retention/ghosting and/or lack of responsiveness would be extra awful.

    3. I do watch most of my movies plugged in. But have you never had girlfriend or friend over and wanted to watch a movie on the bed or sofa or patio somewhere else that doesn't necessarily have a plug within reach? Even when other plugs are within reach, it's so much nicer to not have to do bs like unplugging from the plug behind the desk, pulling out the charger from there, carrying it over to the bed, plugging in the laptop, and then repeating that whole process in reverse when the movie is done. What a pain...And if the plug is in an annoying location it may force wires or something on the bed that you then have to deal with and worry about accidentally unplugging. Come on, agree with me that not having to plug in the laptop in situations like that is a lot nicer.

    @Hooydonk:
Not that bs again! Stop being silly dude. The 4GB card has been confirmed Maxwell numerous times by the core count. It is 100% Maxwell.

The "light" comes from the backlight, which is where the majority of power is used. The backlight for the 4K screen should consume nearly equal power as the 1080p screen, unless there's a difference in TN vs IPS pixel efficiency that I know of.

The actual power used to change the state of the pixels should be minimal. The only place where battery usage would be affected should be the actual processing power used by the CPU and GPU that is needed to draw 4x the pixels. I still feel like the impact will be minimal, and well worth it.

I'm going to assume TigerDirect's site has typos and does not have IPS. Altctrl still needs to verify, but Tigerdirect now has model 59425944 which claims IPS screen and 4GB 860M, while Newegg has the same model with only 2GB of vRam.

@acturar if watching it with people is a concern I honestly you'll be much more bothered with the TN aspect of the screen. 2 people are not going to be able to look at the screen head on, so at least one person is going to be looking at a distorted picture...

Ha, give me a break. If the laptop is 1 metre away from three people sitting in a line with their heads all 1 metre away from each other, the person in the middle will have a perfect, direct viewing angle and even the people on the sides will have viewing angles of ~45 degrees, well within horizontal viewing angles for this laptop. And who on earth sits 1 metre apart anyways, lol? Realistically, even people on the edge would get viewing angles of <30 degrees. With two people the angles would be even lower/better. And even better if it's your girlfriend and you're cuddling. ;)

Did you guys never watch movies with other people 5-10 years ago or something? Even back then it was really easy for 3 people to see a laptop screen at once if it was placed a metre away. And on TN screens with technically lousy viewing angles too. You guys are all making a mountain out of a molehill here (haven't heard THAT expression in a while).

Simple trigonometry, folks. No you won't be able to see the screen from ridiculous angles when it is 1 foot away from you, but the viewing angles in any sort of normal content viewing scenario should be fine. Only the vertical viewing angles are bad, really, and nobody is going to be stacking friends on top of one another when watching a movie, lol. How many people do you invite to your movie nights?

It all depends on how you think you'll use it. Vertical viewing angles are more important to those who use their laptop in places other than their lap. For example, bringing it into the kitchen to watch something while you cook or using it on a workbench while working on fixing something. I use my laptop for things like that enough that I would find it frustrating having to adjust the angle every time I stood up or moved significantly in another direction. Especially working in the garage with my hands dirty, I don't want to have to touch my laptop more than I have to. If you're just playing games on your lap all the time, viewing angles won't matter.

Okay, that's the first good point I've heard regarding viewing angles in this thread. In the "moving around" scenarios you described better vertical viewing angles would indeed be beneficial. For me, my laptop is on a desk ~98% of the time, on a bed or chair (for movie watching) ~2% of the time, and on my lap almost 0% of the time. And I absolutely never move around constantly while using it in any of those three scenarios, apart from adjusting movie watching position sometimes. But I don't mind adjusting it a bit in those cases. You make a good point for whoever uses their laptops like you described though. First point on the subject that makes sense, lol!

Anyways, I'm not saying everyone who prefers IPS over TN is an idiot, lol. I just wanted to point out that TN panels have some nice benefits too (refresh rate, battery use, cost) and that some of the supposed cons you guys are whining about really don't matter at all to a lot of people. Personally I would take a high-quality 95% NTSC TN panel over a high-quality 95% NTSC IPS panel for this particular laptop if both options cost the same amount. I think the extra battery life I'd get would be worth any cons. On a laptop like the rMBP or the Dell XPS 15 where battery life is so amazing it is literally never a concern, I'd take the IPS. But neither option is always terrible: what's important is the gamut and panel quality, really, instead of necessarily the panel type.

When I run the setup from the International folder, I get the same error.

I followed the your instructions and the video posted as well.

    >Download driver
    >Download your file from mega
    >Copy mega file into display.driver
    >Restart with disabled drivers
    >Run setup - same error

I even checked my device manager and the mega file to make sure they had the same matching numbers, which they do.

There is one thing I noticed while doing all of this, this might not even be anything, but I'll mention it just in case.

After watching the video posted, I noticed after he had downloaded the mega file, there was a gear logo on top of his file, and when I download it, mine doesn't have that.
Second, I noticed when I past the file into the display.driver, it doesn't replace anything. I tried doing this about 4 times, and only 1 of those times did it give me a message saying to replace another file.

It doesn't look fine to me at all, which is why I switched to the Y50 Touch. But the ugliness isn't caused by TN vs IPS or FHD vs 4K: it's the matte finish that is the culprit. Basically, it's cheaply done and so causes the yellowish tint and reduced brightness. Looking at pictures of the Y50 Touch display, the only issue it has in common with this matte screen are theoretically low colour gamut and bad vertical viewing angles. Neither of those are deal-breakers to me, and I like the high vividness and brightness that the Y50 Touch has. Its whites definitely don't look like yellows.

Probably the matte screen can be configured to look better as well, like some people have done and demonstrated. It really isn't completely terrible, though the lower-quality matte finish does do it in a bit compared to glossy displays or nice matte displays like the Y510p's. I didn't want to deal with it and just picked the glossy Touch version, which should be just fine for my uses.

Is Lenovo using both Elan and Synaptics trackpads? According to this review ( Lenovo Y50 15.6" Gaming Laptop Review - YouTube), the trackpad is Synaptics, however someone else on this forum said their trackpad was Elan. If I am not mistaken, Lenovo used a combination of Synaptics and Elan trackpads on the Y500 as well.

Mine is most definitely Elan. Ordered directly from Lenovo web store.

I wouldn't say I don't care, but I think people are blowing this pretty badly out of proportion. No, it's not the best screen, and no it doesn't have the best viewing angles. It does seem like there's a good circlejerk of people here "confirming" how bad of a screen it is when many don't even own it.

I own the Y50 Touch. Not once have I even considered returning it while in use. Yeah, the vertical angles is pretty bad, but then I adjust it and the problem is solved. Someone pointed out this would be an issue when watching a movie while they're cooking; that makes complete sense and is a very valid point. But everyone else? 2 people next to each other can't watch a movie on the Y50? Are you kidding me?!

It's a very good laptop with an OK screen. If you're not moving around, or you're not into any sort of video/picture editing, I can't see how this laptop would be an issue unless you're looking the PERFECT laptop. In that case, there are other laptops that you should have been considering in the 1st place. That being said, I'd strongly consider this selling/returning this laptop if an IPS screen version came out, but in no way is it worth preaching post over post of how bad it is.

As far as the screen goes, I think everybody has a point. What it boils down to is that the screen is average at best. A lot of people, myself included, find it very usable and that's fine. While others find it a downgrade because they're used to better/great screens and that's fine too.

I think the one area we all agree on is that Lenovo could have spent just a little more on screen quality. In other words there is definite room for improvement.

So if having an excellent screen is a big issue for you, then unfortunately the 1080p Y50 isn't for you. That was a business/design decision made by Lenovo and you have every right to respond to that with your wallet. I hope the 4K screen works out for you, because personally I think the rest of the laptop is pretty well designed.

I think a lot of the "preaching" is either in response to someone asking how the screen is, in which case, some people here legitimately think its a bad screen, and are just offering their honest opinion, or are responding to defenders of the screen, which I don't see a problem with either.

I don't think we are just randomly bashing the screen for no reason. If people can say why they think the screen is fine, why can't people say why they don't find it satisfactory?

In regards to the screen, laptop screens are incredibly easy to replace. If it bothers someone that much, why not just replace it?

    Not to mention the warranty...

If the display and digitizer are not glued together I think you could replace it. In case these are glued together I found this panel with digitizer, but I'm not sure if the digitizer interface will work with Y50 (It should be standard right?). 15 6" Touch Digitizer LCD Screen for Acer Aspire R7 571 R7 571G B156HAN01 2 IPS | eBay

They can when they bring up some good points like Xentar did instead of just repeating sRGB gamut numbers someone else posted and making up bs about viewing angles (every time you repeat the viewing angles argument they seem to get worse and worse and worse until two people can't watch a movie together?). Most of the whiners, you included, don't even have the laptop and are judging entirely from pictures of screens taken in different lighting conditions and without proper colour calibration. You're also judging the Y50 Touch display quality from pictures of the Y50 Non-Touch display, which is even more absurd. People who may be thinking of buying the Y50 might enter the thread, see all the bs you've posted about sub-20 degree viewing angles (roughly what's needed for two people to watch a movie comfortably together), and incorrectly get turned away. If you actually bought a Y50 and was an unhappy customer I would understand all the endless bashing. But you're a not-well-informed speculator, basically, and might have already turned people off from purchasing this nice machine.

I promise it's not bad. If you can use a screw driver and carefully unplug and plug a cable in, you can do it.

It's one thing informing people about a laptop's shortcomings, as Xentar is doing, and another thing entirely to make up melodramatic bs like you are.

ah so you have one of the problems that there's one other guy had before. He had the same problem with you and what I told him to either just manually delete the original NLTVi.inf file and add the new one. you can try that it's better if you post me some screenshots of your Display.driver folder

They also might've been correctly turned away and been saved the trouble? Who are you judge how people might or might not have reacted to the screen?

I've posted like 2 posts total in response to you so I don't get why you're getting all worked up lol. My comment about the movie watching thing might have been a wrong one, but I've honestly seen laptops where it was actually difficult for two people to watch a movie without *any* distortion. It was still watchable, yes, but it was definitely worse than viewing it straight on.

Do you think the average consumer will know to calibrate his screen? Ill be the first to admit that I've never done such a thing, and have never found a problem with screens (that I've owned) until I saw this one. Granted, I havent owned a large amount of laptops or monitors, but like you said, I've only seen pictures and whatnot of this so far, but I've not been pleased with them. You honestly think the chances are high that ill change my opinion if I order one and view it in person? I recall someone saying it actually looked worse in person.

There's a saying called numbers never lie ( also a show on ESPN). Honestly, I don't see where your getting this notion that people are repeating gamut numbers mindlessly. They have been said in this thread a couple times yes, but all to back up arguments... Do you disagree with the statement that 60% sRGB and 45% AdobeRGB are below average? Hence, does that not make this a below average screen? Numbers are the only thing that are inarguable. Opinions, perspectives, etc, are all variables down to the specific person.

It wasn't my intention to stir up any verbal brawling. Have I resorted to calling your opinions "bs?"

Discussions dissolve when emotions get involved.
