Come now, TN isn't a problem. If you get a good TN panel, you'd be pretty happy. I had a Dell 24" monitor that was a TN panel, and it was fantastic. You really had to get to extreme viewing angles before colours started shifting. And I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R last year that came with a pretty decent TN panel (CMN1720, if you care to google it). I'm typing this on a Clevo with a TN panel (LGD0259, if you care to google that one too) and it's pretty good overall.

The problem here is we have a pretty sub-par TN panel, no doubt picked by Lenovo due to cost constraints. They wanted to design a gaming a laptop they could sell (at a profit) for $1150. The display is where they chose to cut costs.

Don't blame all TN panels because of this one. In fact, I remember a time where hardcore gamers swore by TN panels.

Hey guys, should i get the touchscreen model from lenovo or best buy? For me best buy makes alot of sense because i live a block from it and they will ship it there in about 5-6 days. The lenovo model will ship in 1-3 days it says. I know!!!! not too reliable but who knows. I dont know best buys return policy but lenovos is pretty good i believe. Any one else ordering the base 4700HQ touch model let me know how long it took you to get it from lenovo. Thanks!

Yeah you definitely make good points. It just sounded better saying "deliver us from TN" than "deliver us from screen mediocrity" xD

Note to all: I've had a pretty nasty cold these past few days. You can probably tell by my posts if I'm writing while my meds are wearing off or if I'm riding high on (very high levels of) acetaminophen.

If I've been a d1ck to you, my apologies. When the pills wear off, the splitting headaches and runny eyes come back.

Now considering TigerDirect's spec sheet isn't exactly accurate, does your model actually have 4gb of VRAM?

Best buy, you'll get the slightly prettier glossy screen (just b/c it's touch) and the 7260 wifi card! Great price also.

It did sound pretty good, I admit. I myself was a big fan of IPS panels (I remember splurging $600 on my first, 20" Dell Ultrasharp back in the day). Still am. But after my few last experiences with recent, quality TN panels, I can appreciate that a good TN panel isn't necessarily a whole lot worse than an IPS, depending on your usage.

That being said, I'm in the market for a quality IPS monitor to hook my next laptop up to when on extended gaming binges. I'm hoping to snag a bargain at around $200. It's amazing how affordable a good IPS display has become.

I've ordered both the Y50 and a Eurocom Shark (Clevo W355SS). I'll compare the two and share my thoughts with the community once they arrive.

I will say this, klick has been a great service, though I am a little upset that Best Buy is selling a version with a better network card and a touch display.. Makes me think I should have taken a more patient approach then try to get the earliest model.. I would have still ordered from Klick though!

go to your network and sharing center and go to troubleshoot problems -> internet connections. if something happens, then do it says... if nothing happens, then ignore it... regardless, you should still go to lenovo's website and download the latest driver for the wifi card if there are any

Thought I'd just chime in -- not sure if this was already answered or not.
Just received the touch model from Best Buy. I looked up the monitor properties and it shows it having a Hardware ID AUO36ED.

now, let us just pray that the 4k models indeed got an IPS.

Y50 could be the perfect laptop + its price if they got it an IPS display and another HD/SSD slot.

You had the same problem as me. It only reads it as a text document file and not a "Setup information file". To fix this you have to get windows to show the extensions and you can do this by:
Show or hide file name extensions - Windows Help
After you do that, the file should show up as NVLTi.inf.txt. Delete the .txt and making it just NVLTi.inf (it says something about it being bad changing the extensions but ignore that, as you can always re-dl the file anyway if something goes wrong).
Then replace the NVLti.inf file in your display.drivers folder and it should pop up the message of replacing the OLD NVLTi.inf file, and then the rest of the process will be the same as the instructions listed in heibk's post.

    Hope this works for you.

On a side note, how come my non-touch version of the Y50 reads the display as AUO36ED and not the other one? I thought the AUO36ED was for the touch models.

    Someone PLEASE help me.

I just received my y50 and this is my first time having a windows computer. I was updating the drivers from the lenovo website when all of a sudden I lose wifi connection. Now I cant get it to connect again, nor can I find anything to do with wifi. I can connect with an ethernet cable, but that is the only way. Once again, I'm completely new to Windows so this may be a stupid mistake on my part, but help would be GREATLY appreciated.

I posted in the other y50 thread but I was ignored.

Hmm, maybe do a PC Refresh or wipe it clean again like when you got it? Go to your charms, and under PC Settings, then there's something about recovery. All the bloatware and everything will come back though, so beware.

A system restore might be another option. Again, not sure if these will work but you can try.

It has the 7260. Also the TN panel I got isn't bad but comparing it to my 95% ntsc color gamut IPS panel from my old Sager NP8130 I'd say a screen replacement is worth it. I wonder if it's compatible so i can swap them lol.

the FHD y50 uses 30 pin eDPs and you can find any lcd that's has 30 pin. 40 pin is also possible, but you need cut out the connectors and attach the new ones which I highly do not recommend

IPS doesn't automatically make it a much better screen. If it still has abysmal gamut numbers like the FHD screen then, while viewing angles will be better, the color reproduction will still be mediocre. Now, the chances of it not having better gamut numbers is slim I think, because in general IPS screens tend to innately have better gamut coverage than TN, though this isn't always true.

Don't see the point in a 4k display if the 860m can't drive it for gaming. Also I'd imagine windows being to small on a 15.6" screen.

i know, IF it has better screen (color accuracy etc.) just turn it down to 1080p res when you dont want the icon to be small, however it is possible that it is going to get blury. well i think I ll just wait and see the result of the 4k display.

Windows looks fine on a 4k. it's the 3rd party apps that can be somewhat annoying to scale. Since the 4k probably won't be until mid July, I'm going to wait and see how people's screen replacements go and decide then. I really don't want 4k if I can get around it. The QHD version of nx500 or gx500 will be my backup plan.

The main problem is it's not that easy. just turning it down when you want to isn't ideal because of all the custom scaling you have to do to get it to look right. For example, on the Razer blade, when I switched to 1600x900, everything was too massive and pretty much unusable until I adjusted the scaling. Then in order to go back to native, I would have to rescale everything. Eventually this will all get fixed but it's going to take a while.
