ARCTURAR'S SHORT Y50 TOUCH REVIEW
Hey guys, so I've played around with my Lenovo Y50 Touch (base model) for a day now, and it's a really awesome machine! I'm super glad I bought it and also super glad I ordered it from Klick. It got to my house in Toronto in 5 business days and with a normal (not bilingual) keyboard and shift key.
Here are my thoughts on each component:
Design
This machine looks and feels even better in person than it does in videos. It's super thin, really light for its size, and has a super sexy design. It definitely has some style and flair, but with the keyboard backlight turned off looks clean enough to comfortably take to a business meeting. In short, its exactly what I wanted in the design department, and I personally prefer it to a Macbook. My only complaint is that the USB ports on the left hand side are too close together; two fat USB devices can't really fit next to one another there, which is a bit annoying. Luckily there is also a third USB port on the right hand side and I never need to use 3 USB ports at once. And if one of the USB devices isn't fat it's all fine. But it's a minor annoyance that they couldn't move one of the ports over just a little bit.
Build Quality
Outstanding overall. The laptop feels like a premium machine. I like the soft finish on the body and the metal on the lid. Everything comes together really well. Regarding flex: yes the laptop flexes when you press down on it hard but this is completely unnoticeable in any regular usage scenario. When typing normally there is no flex at all. It really isn't as bad as BeeHo's videos made it seem like, and seriously isn't an issue.
Screen
I don't know what you whiners were complaining about: in my opinion, this screen is awesome! So far I've only gotten compliments for it, haha. The colour gamut probably isn't super high and it probably isn't usable for professional graphics work, but for me it's perfect. I love the 15.6" size; I've never had a screen this large and the extra working space is fantastic! The display is really bright and the reds, greens, and blues all pop out at me nicely. And the glossy finish helps a lot and doesn't leave any ugly yellow tint like the matte option seems to do. Note that I have the AUO36 panel and a glossy touchscreen. I think it's a lot nicer than the Chi Mei panel, and on that note I should remind you guys that NOT ALL TOUCHSCREEN MODELS HAVE AUO PANELS! I think Xentar had a Chi Mei on his BestBuy (or was it TigerDirect?) Y50 Touch. But Klick's Y50 Touch batch are AUO, which is another reason I'd recommend buying from them even if its a bit more expensive for international customers. Based on my experience and pictures of other panel versions, I would say a Y50 Touch with an AUO panel is the best bet for a good screen for casual users. People used to higher colour gamut might not be impressed but for me it nails the mark. I was skeptical about Touch but honestly it's a pretty cool feature and I like to use it once in a while, particularly for scrolling and zooming. Oh, and while vertical viewing angles are admittedly average (I don't care about that at all, personally), the horizontal viewing angles are pretty nice. I would say slightly better than the average TN panel.
Keyboard
My first experience with a Lenovo keyboard, and it is a very positive one. Key spacing, texture, and feedback are all great, and typing is a joy. And the numpad, which seems to be becoming more of a rarity in 15.6" laptops, is awesome. I really like having those extra keys for gaming and number crunching. Oh, and the backlight looks really sweet too and is very useful in darker conditions. I don't think anyone who buys this machine will be disappointed with the keyboard, haha.
Touchpad
A bit more rubbery than I'm used to, but pretty nice and responsive. Size is nice, location is fine, and button feedback is pretty good. No issues at all. Overall, it's not as good as a Macbook touchpad but very solid. I have an ELAN touchpad, though it is my understanding some Y50s ordered from different vendors can have Synaptics.
Sound
The sound quality is legitimately amazing, taking into account that this is a laptop we're talking about and not an expensive surround sound setup. The subwoofer is super awesome and makes the bass sound great - it has a kick to it that no other laptop I've heard does. High notes sound crisp as well and even on maximum volume there is no distortion. Hats off to JBL and Lenovo for the excellent sound on this machine/
Power
Like I said earlier, I don't have any modern AAA titles and so am not the best guy to ask about those. From other people's reviews and gaming videos, it's pretty clear that this laptop can play anything at High or Ultra settings. Even the absolute newest games will play very smoothly at great frame rates with Medium settings. I personally only tried emulation so far, and it's fantastic! Miles better than my old laptop. Gamecube titles like Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime run smoothly, though it isn't quite possible to enable all the graphics hacks at high resolutions without losing framerates. During my emulation tests, which especially tax the CPU, the computer stayed cool to the touch and was really quiet. According to other reviews, this is still the case when playing AAA titles. And Visual Studio ran very quickly and nicely, even with tons of internet tabs open and other programs running in the background. Multi-tasking and speed should be improved even further when I add another 8GB RAM stick and upgrade to an SSD. No complaints power-wise!
That's it for now. Maybe I'll post more opinions later, and if anyone has any questions about my machine I can answer them. Again, this is the base Touch model from Klick: the same machine kingfirejet has. Overall, I highly recommend it!fmmsf and PsylentStorm like this. -
The screen is really bad for the non-touch models. I've heard that the touchscreens are fine though like you've said. -
Hi guys! I've been reading this forum for a long time and made a decision to buy the 4K model.
I have questions on pertaining on which 4K model and questions on improving them in the future.
I am deciding between the Lenovo Y50 Laptop - 59421856 - Black - UHD Display or Amazon.com : Lenovo Y50 4k 15.6-Inch Laptop (59425943) Black : Computers & Accessories
The differences between these from what I see are the hard drive space, processor, RAM, and price (59421856 is $1279 with student discount while Amazon is $1399)
Furthermore, (1) can I upgrade the Hybrid 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB SSHD to either a 256/512 SSD?
(2) Is there a huge difference between the 4700 and the 4710 processor?
(3) are there any more discounts that I can use instead of the student discount?
And lastly, (4) Which is worth getting?
RAM isn't a problem since it's easy to get. -
1)Yes
2)Not really you gain an extra .100 GHz
3)I got nothing for this one
4) That's up to you and your budget. -
I looked at Klick's online store. The only problem I'm currently seeing is that (for Canadian customers) between the ebates 5% cash back, a $50 coupon, and the shipping and import duties, buying from Klick ends up costing almost $300 more than buying straight from Lenovo.
Even if you just buy from Lenovo at the listed $1149 (with no discounts at all) Klick is still around $150 more expensive.
Not bashing Klick at all, I've heard nothing but good things about Klick. Just saying that from my perspective (living in Toronto), it's substantially more expensive. -
Isn't it anybody's concern in here that as soon as 2015 starts there will be Broadwell CPUs, DDR4 RAM, and 20 nm Maxwell GPUs?
I mean I am afraid of pulling a trigger on a 2014 laptop when as soon as 2015 hits most games will start shifting towards the new hardware and my laptop would become obsolete in like 1 year tops. Seems like a terrible waste of money...
When buying a laptop i would prefer it to last me at least 2-3 years before having the feeling i am starting to have a crappy computer compared to what the games demand...
Do you guys really think y50 will still be a good computer when the games start adapting to the 2015 hardware? -
Its going to take years for developers to program games In such a way. For the next 5 years or so every game will conform to the Xbox and ps4. I'll be more worried on plugs or parts breaking before it's slow.

Hey guys. Just ordered touch model from bestbuy. Should be here friday. Anyways, do you think I will get the AUO panel or Chi Mei panel. Hoping for AUO !! I guess we'll see.
-
Hey, I thought you said the TigerDirect model would have a IPS display? You were so sure too.
I know sometimes you get false info but c'mon man at least man up you were wrong about it.KlickOnline, Xentar712, liteon6x and 1 other person like this. -
By that logic you'd never buy anything, as every year or so new hardware/architecture comes out.
Besides, a laptop at this price point is outdated after 1, maybe 2 years anyway. I usually sell what I have and use that cash to "upgrade" to a new laptop.
Unless you buy a really high-end laptop (we're talking GTX 880m), you'll feel like you're lagging new games eventually. For example, the GTX 660m (gaming model) gives about the same performance as a GT 750m (the following year's non-gaming model). A year after it was introduced, a lower-rated card beat the previous year's gaming model card. That's just computing hardware for you.
And remember, 95% of the appeal of the Y50 is its sale price ($1149). At its "full" price, around $1400, there are better laptops to be had. If you wait til next year, I'm pretty sure that whatever laptop you can get for $1149 will have the same characteristics as the Y50 (namely, good price/performance ratio, but not top-notch, high-end future-proof hardware) -
Sorry if you feel that. But its screens will be here early July for all models and makes. Asus msi Lenovo ect

I hope you are right but I'll believe it when I see it.

haswell i7 is certainly going to last for at least 4 years without a doubt. the improvement in CPU performance is barely anything since 2nd gen i7. broadwell so far is only known to be more energy efficient than haswell and presumably produces less heat. how much improvement there will be is still in question.
DDR4 won't become trend for a while. think back to the transition from DDR2 to DDR3, the same or even longer transition is gonna happen to DDR4. DDR3 isn't going anywhere for a while
GPU, however, is the one in doubt. 28nm maxwell as you can see is already a huge improvement from kepler and you can expect what'll happen with 20nm maxwell. performance wise, however, is not a big issue. the first year you have on ultra, the 2nd year you cut it down to high and so forth. it's gonna with any GPU regardless so no you are not getting obsolete hardware in a year. getting out of date happens to any modern electronics, but it won't be that fast
um, no. PS4 has a HD 7850 and any modern AAA games can top on it easily. consoles can't even reach 1080P with the highest setting on BF4 and that's called conforming to consoles? unless you are ubisoft and purposeful nerfing qualities on PC, it's impossible to conform to consoles -
I started my reading a couple hundred pages back where everyone was speculating about the quality of the 4K monitor, was a consensus ever reached? Is the 4K monitor worth the extra money? Is the 4K touch screen?
Hopefully someone can help -
Considering nobody has a 4k version yet, the questions remain unanswered
-
For those that have had it for a few days, how are the fingerprints and smudges? Is it as much of a fingerprint magnet as it's been made out to be?
-
Ahh ok, I was hoping there was more recent info about the moniters used.
-
Initially I ordered Y50 FHD, I7 4700 HQ, 8GB ram, 860 4GB, 1T SSHD. I wanted to have an alternative when I spend weekend at my Wife's parents house in other city. My main computer is and will be PC. I read some information here about horrible display and now I'm little confused. I don't know whether I should cancel my order in this situation.
Before I decide I'd like to know what current user can say about temps. loudness and throttling in Y50. -
I don't think the consensus is that it's a horrible display. It just isn't a fantastic one. Most complaints seem to come from the matte version. Poor viewing angle and so-so colour gamut.
Displays are such a personal thing that the only way to know for sure is to buy it and try it out for yourself. Some say it's horrible, some say it's average, some say it's good. -
And what about throttling, loudness, temps under load (gaming, benchmarks, prime etc)?

Have a look at this review, it's pretty thorough. -
IMHO it will really boil down to what display youre used to. Like for me, Ive been using a 95% gamut screen for 3 years, it will be a big adjustment for me..

So I installed a new ssd into my new Y50 and downloaded all the drivers/software off the lenovo support website and everything seems fine. I've run into a problem though.. my graphics card isn't being detected in device manager so it's not allowing me to install the nvidia driver. Yes switchable graphics option is on in BIOS. Anyone know of a solution?
Also how do you reset the cmos? -
The model I briefly had was AUO36ED. It was from Best Buy. I'm sure your experience differs from mine because of what I've been used to. I've had a 98% sRGB screen on my laptop for over a year now, with five different machines(yes, I'm a laptop addict!). I also have two 99% PLS panels on my desktop rig, so I'm kind of a critic now. To top it off, the Y500 and y510p I had before were better panels than this generation in terms of viewing angles. So I was kind of disappointed, to say the least. I did not get close to as good of angles as in this review: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 Review. Last year's screens were 90% sRGB too - far better than the y50. Their prices went up, so I expected it to be at least as good as last year. It just irks me becasue I would have paid an extra $50 for a decent TN screen - IPS isn't everything. So to me, they totally failed on this model. It's a totally great machine otherwise and depending on how the 4k version looks I might consider getting the non-touch model so I can replace the screen. I don't think the touch model will be an easy replace at all, so it's 100% off my list. I wonder if the screen from the y500/510p would fit. I've never had to replace a laptop screen so I'm not too familiar with all the connections and compatibility issues.

Been following this post and after ordering and receiving the Y50, just wanted to add my 2 cents:
Ordered the base i7 Y50 (1080, 8gb ram, SSHD 500 gb, 2gb video memory) laptop on June 3, 2014. Was shipped to Toronto, Ontario on June 16, 2014 and received on June 20, 2014.
Unfortunately has the Canadian Keyboard (not a big fan, but I can live with it).
The screen is way better than I expected after following this post. It does have the Matte DISPLAY\AUO36ED. The screen is more than sufficient for my needs (masters research and occasional portable gaming). It is not as good as say a macbook screen but it is more than sufficient and the horizontal viewing angles are just fine. I do not use any graphics design software or can really identify colors so if you are like me and don't require that kind of colour accuracy the screen should be fine for you.
Fingerprints appeared on the cover and bottom from the moment I opened the box and continue to grow in numbers - not even worth cleaning them. I am pleasantly surprised with the keyboard and keys - no fingerprints have shown yet. The keyboard is 90% of what a standard thinkpad keyboard is like to type on (I use a T430 at work extensively for report writing and analysis).
I was going to switch the SSHD for an SSD but the performance with the UEFI bios is reasonable so I will probably do this later this year or early next year.
I wiped the drive and did a clean install of windows 8.1. It went flawlessly and automatically detected my windows serial key. The only trick with installing through a UEFI is to format the USB stick as a fat32 instead of NTFS.
I haven't tried any new games on it yet, but for the few minutes I ran wow and d3 and they work at max settings. Haven't had a chance to install any steam games and test them out. Performance will be more than enough for my needs based on what I have seen thus far. I also haven't tested the battery life. All I need is a few hours of life and I am happy so based on others' opinions it should be just fine for my usage.
Overall I am very happy with the purchase and the price/performance ratio. I was considering a lot of the other laptops in this class and I just couldn't justify the additional money for the other machines (ie. gigabyte, razer, asus). Also I did not require a 4k screen. I also do miss having an msata port, but at the rate SSD's are dropping in price soon a 1 tb ssd will be reasonable to purchase.
Thanks for the information hopefully this will help some of you make a decision based on a generic user. At this price and size I don't think there is a better laptop out there as capable. I just wish the Y40 came with a backlit keyboard and a proper processor and not the ultra low voltage units.
I did have one question for the forum:
After a clean install is there any way to get the devices and printers icons back? I miss them ;-)
Hope it helps. -
Can you please confirm you have the AU Optronics (AUO36ED) screen and not the Chimei (CMN15C4) screen? Owners of the non-touch model have all been reporting the Chimei screen while the touch owners have been reporting the AU Optronics screen.
-
Fingerprints don't show up or are very, very faint on the keyboard/trackpad or on the plate they are on. They kinda show up on the aluminum top and bottom covers, but aren't very detailed (just a slight variance in color). On the plastic around the screen and the part where the hinges connect, it gets very visible; no one really touches that anyway.
-
I have the AUO36ED on non-touch.
-
I agree with this.
-
Hello i followed your walkthrough and wasnt able to copy the file and drop it in it kept being read as a text file so i copied the new file content and pasted it into the the old and it seemed to work it started to install but then it fails any thoughts?
-
That worked, thanks! Overall I'm very happy with my Y50 purchase. Love the form factor and you can't beat the price/performance. Now I just have to swap out the screen.
-
Dude, it's worth it. I got the 512GB Crucial MX100 and got a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on it, disabled unnecessary start-up items and services... With fast startup on, it takes 6 seconds to get to desktop from me pressing the power button. With fast startup off, it's still only around 8 seconds. The 1TB SSHD is good and pretty fast. But having the SSD in there really makes this laptop shine. Applications load faster too.
For those of you who have an SSD, I usually create a RAMDisk of about 512MB and set Chrome (or whatever other browser I use) to put the internet cache on that RAMDisk. Doing so eliminates the unnecessary writes to the SSD and it also speeds up some parts of the loading too. -
Show or hide file name extensions - Windows Help
Enable the "show file extensions" thing and then copy the file over. Make sure it's a .inf file and not a .txt
Unless you mean you got through part of the setup then it failed. That's what happened to me. I had to reinstall the drivers given by Lenovo and then I would install the new ones, but WITHOUT ticking the "Clean installation" box. -
So I asked this a couple pages ago but has anyone with a Y50 with the stock 512gb ssd been able to use samsung RAPID mode with it?
-
Is it the non-touch model that you have?
-
I am also planning to buy a y50 and change the screen later. Even after doing that it'll still work out better value than competitors such as the msi gs60 ghost.
Please let us know how things work out
-
If you're talking to me, I have the matte version. If someone else, please specify next time to save any possible confusion.
-
If you own the machine, please head to the Y50 owners thread. Would be helpful if you posted your display ID for the matte non-touch version there.
-
Wow, I thought I had time to think about cancelling my order since it was supposed to ship next month but the 4k model just shipped now. Should have it in a couple days. Guess I'm getting it.
-
How long did it take you to get your shipping date since you ordered it? It's been a week for me and it's still in "Released to manufacturing".
-
Ordered Jun 12th
-
Well then. Looks like I'm not getting mine until July.
-
Any chance you could do a colorimeter check like you did with the FHD version? Please update once you receive!

hey guys it seems very odd for the graphic card, Lenovo Y50 15.6" Gaming Laptop Review - YouTube, this youtube video at minute 4:19 show that the graphic card is 845m not 860m, I recommend that you guys check the video
-
It still says 860m at the top with the model GM107, but I have no idea what that 845m below it means.
Edit: well it seems that it does exist according to notebook check, but I have not seen a single laptop with it... -
Yes, will definitely do that. If it's significantly better, I'll borrow the non-4k model for a side by side comparison as well.
It said 860M on the previous slide. Also, I don't think the 845M has 4GB GDDR5 ram. I think it's an error in HWinfo(the program they used).
