Hi folks - we have a lot of people that have pre-ordered the 4K 512GB SSD Y50 version from us - they will be arriving to us next week, a bit ahead of schedule. Some of you should start receiving them by the end of next week.

I thought this was addressed and the 4GB version was also Maxwell.
-
okay2, sorry guys for the bs, lol I think I kinda like have a serious trust issue, this is the last time man last time..
-
I'm actually a console fanboy, but I support this statement 100% because it's absolutely true!
BTW who here is going to receive the 4K model first? I don't care about a full review but would love something brief and some pics to follow! So I can get totally jealous!! -
So quick question. I tried updating the nvidia drivers like the tutorial showed in the earlier pages but when i do it says that the required files are missing? what should i do
-
so what are your exact steps? and can you post a screenshot of your display.driver folder?
-
Alright so here is a screenshot of the folder imgur: the simple image sharer
and the instructions i followed were that first download the driver from nvidia
second i get the error exit and place the file into the driver
third go to settings and go to recover and advanced set up
i then disable the driver signature verification
i restart and then go to the file outside of the display.driver and click on set up.
Set up runs and says i am missing the required files to continue -
hmm I haven't seen this type of thing happening before
can you try click up on set up again for a few times and see if it still says that? you shouldn't be missing anything because all you did is just replace the inf file and nothing else -
alright i did it again same error here is a picture of it imgur: the simple image sharer
-
you know what, this is probably the installer's fault. try deleting the entire folder and rerun the installer and replace the file again and see if it works
-
Ordered mine on June 18th. Order status shows ship date of July 17th. Don't know if I have that kind of patience, will probably have a different laptop by then.
Heck, the ASUS G551 might even be out by then. -
yea sorry to say but its still the same error as before
would it possibly be because the hard drive is a hybrid? -
no hybrid drive has nothing to do with this. hmm... how about redownloading everything again and try it over? there still shouldn't be any missing filesdelarious likes this.
-
alrighty! redownloaded everything and the installer seems to be functioning.
Thanks so much for sticking around and helping! -
hello friends,
Can any owner confirm if the 4k model has tn or ips panel ??
Also, is the 4k model display better than non-4k in terms of colour, vividness, contrast, viewing angles ??? -
Nobody has an answer to the above questions yet because nobody has received a 4k version yet
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk -
Oh, I can't believe they are arriving so fast, I should be a little bit more patient and wait for this 4k model.
Great laptop though , can't complain. Also you guys are selling them with great price. Great job. -
I got a tracking number but it hasn't moved yet. Also, it's being shipped via UPS "Worldwide expedited". Coming straight from Kunshan, China
-
It probably won't take that long since mine said the same and they just sent it yesterday.
-
Let's hope so. Honestly, if it doesn't ship by this Friday, I'm cancelling. I'm not waiting over a month for a laptop. At that point, I'll probably keep an eye out for one of those new ASUS (GX500 looks particularly sweet).
-
Hey Xentar, you are the guy with the y50 touch from bestbuy right? I would just like to know if that model of yours has the chi mei panel or not? And also if the display was decent enough? Because I am considering it. I would really appreciate your response.. thanks
-
I posted my impressions of the screen and the model number a dozen or so pages back. I also posted it in the other thread. It's not the chi mei panel and I didn't care for it either. It's my friend's laptop and I only got to spend a couple hours with it, so I can't offer any more info that what I already said. I ordered the 4k version and it will hopefully be here this week or early next. If the screen is much better, I'll see if I can get his machine again and do a side by side comparison.WhiteWuf likes this.
-
Thanks man, and sorry if I did not read the earlier posts. But since its not the chi mei screen I was just hoping it won't be as bad as others are stating. I will be waiting for your review then..
-
I've never seen the chi mei screen so I can't comment on the difference. All the reviews are totally subjective so it's really hard to say how good or how bad it is. I can only say that the touch model's screen is one of the lowest quality screens I've seen out of a long list of laptops that I've had my hands on in the past 12-14 months. Here's the list for reference: m11x, Y500, Y510p, TX300CA, X202E, U310, S400CA, S7-391, V7-482PG, X200CA, UX302LG, Q501LA, Q550LF, GS60 Pro(non 3k), Razer Blade 2014, Y50(touch non 4k)
The Y50 screen and the U310 screen shared very similar characteristics to me. The Y50 screen was slightly better than the X200CA, X202E and S400CA screens but significantly worse than the rest. I'm critical of color capacity, contrast and viewing angles, so others might think differently than I do.Oranjoose and alaskajoel like this. -

So far, every merchant that has claimed to have a FHD IPS display has proven to be a mistake/typo.
That being said, if somebody wants to order this to confirm, I'm sure we'd all appreciate it!alaskajoel likes this. -
It's likely 99% to be the regular non-IPS screens we've been seeing.
-
Hey guys,
How would the y50 compare performance-wise with the p27g v2? How is Gigabyte´s buildquality vs lenovo´s? -
I think in all the talk of the screen some may have overlooked how excellent the speakers are on this laptop. Easily the best I've ever had in a laptop. They compare well to the 2.1 setup I had on my desktop.
-
But this is Amazon right? there might be a small chance its IPS
someone pls confirm with the amazon sales dept!

No point in confirming with Amazon Sales - exact same thing will happen as Tiger Direct. They only repeat the information given to them, and the information is given to them by Lenovo. Lenovo evidently had original plans to make all screens IPS, but then changed and didn't update all of their material they sent to their retailers .. kind of the same situation as the Y40 backlit keyboard - the demo units they sent all had backlit keyboards, and online it said they had it, and Lenovo reps all confirmed they had it - turns out none of them had it (in the US). Unfortunately communication has never been a strong point for Lenovo. -
I see.. oh boy..

Does anybody know if there will be 4K touch version?
-
Receiving my purchase from Best Buy tomorrow. Can't wait! I pray that is not bad as everyone is making it out to be. I'm mostly worried about the sound quality through the audio port. Hopefully it will sound as good as my previous laptop with beats audio.
-
A lot of us are waiting for this. Nobody knows for sure, but they did show a 4k Touch model at CES, so it's possible, but still uncertain.
-
Well, here I am, finally typing on my Y50 Touch (#...1835).
Pros: everything but one thing
Cons: the one thing everybody keeps talking about.
First of all, I think it's worth mentioning that the keyboard is glorious. It is the most comfortable and accurate-feeling keyboard I've ever used on a laptop. That's a big deal, to me. Some people complained of missed keys but that hasn't happened to me, even when I try to replicate by lightly pressing only a corner. Just fantastic. Wow.
The trackpad is ok. Took me awhile to understand that it's built around "touch" functionality, and is meant to be tapped, rather than clicked.
The speakers, for a laptop, are mind-blowing. They are easily better than most cheap home stereos; obviously won't replace any real sound system or something expensive, but they are punchy, crisp, and loud, which is something I've never experienced on a laptop.
The temps are cool, even when gaming. I ran Saints Row 4 on max settings, 1080p for 30 minutes and didn't experience anything more than a mild warmth in the gaming key area (note the word "warm", not "hot"). Gameplay was smooth as silk, out of the box, other than some screen tearing ("max settings" = everything cranked to max but v-sync off). I don't own Crysis 3, Watch Dogs, or Metro Last Light (although I thought about the last one, given the Steam sale today).
Performance is fantastic, best I've experienced on a laptop (I've never owned any raid-stacked Alienware monstrosity). This, despite the stock hybrid. The hybrid is pretty good! Not a throw-away component at all, though certainly not as fast as an SSD. All for $1408 after tax, minus another $90 as compensation for having to wait a month.
And yet...sigh...I think I'm sending it back tomorrow or the next day
In fact, I already have the shipping labels, so I'm pretty sure I'm forced to return even if I changed my mind. The display is just that bad. It works, and it even looks nice (average nice, not top-end nice) if you look at it from a precise and unforgiving angle. Outside of that extremely precise viewing angle, the colors wash out and shift, and the legibility of everything (especially in terms of the whole gamma/brightness/contrast thing) is compromised. It is a mild nuisance that I do not want to put up with for YEARS. My old laptop, a five year old Dell M1530, has a better screen than this and it isn't even 1080p! I'm currently sitting just right, with the screen tilted back just right, and everything positioned just right, so that the screen looks really nice, and I'm sitting here wishing that it looked this nice without much fuss. If the screen had been a good TN, I wouldn't have even cared about IPS. It's just not something I want to deal with for an extended period of time.
I'll keep my eye out for a good deal on the 4k Y50 Touch, because I will truly miss the performance and style of this machine.
For what it's worth, I do not own a nice desktop monitor to compare to this, and I can't see much of a problem with color accuracy (then again, I don't know what to look for; I'm guessing this is sort of an audiophile kind of thing, where casuals don't see a meaningful difference without having screens right up next to each other) but the washed out viewing angle problem, where the optimal experience requires unforgiving steadiness and precision, is a deal-breaker.
But this keyboard though sdfkjsghiughpi;hsdo;kldmsfjkvndfvsd ahhhhh nom nom nom

There there (pats back) there is a chance that the 4k Y50 has IPS, which on paper will give a better experience than the current TN Y50.fantasticzig likes this.

I think quite a few of us are riding on this right now, otherwise, it would be a shame. Everything about the laptop seems satisfactory to me except the screen. Hell if they charged $100 more on every model I'd be fine with that if it meant higher quality screens, somewhere along the likes of the MSI GS60 FHD screens. The price point would still beat just about everything out there except clevos.

I made a topic specific to the Y50 display since so much discussion is about it. PM me with any details or images you want me to place in the first post.
It is so people can quickly refer to what we know so far instead of being told to refer back to upwards of 100 pages. -
The IPS screen on 4K model is confirmed by Lenovo.
Official annonce on Lenovo site (Japan).
Lenovo's first 4K display deployment "Lenovo Y50" debuts -
Any Canadians dealing with complete BS shipping dates? My Y50 is estimated to ship 7/18/14, which is 1 month since the day I ordered. I can't tell whether this is a horrendous joke or not. Waiting this long for a $1000+ order is completely unacceptable, unless there is a backorder on parts, in which case they should've notified customers. Does Lenovo usually pull this crap? I've seen people on NBR waiting for over 2 months on an order and ended up cancelling it. If this is the case I'm better of getting something during August sales.
-
I placed my order on June 18th, at which time the estimated shipping times were 7-10 business days. After placing my order, the initial estimated ship date was July 17th on my order status page, with estimated delivery on July 24th.
Yesterday night, they changed the estimated ship date to June 25th (today), with delivery July 4th.
I'm giving them til Friday. If it hasn't shipped by then, I'm cancelling.
To be honest, with the poor screen reviews and the bilingual keyboard, I have a feeling I'll end up returning it anyway. But I really wanted to be able to judge the screen for myself - maybe I'd get the AUO panel and be happy with it, at which point I could deal with the keyboard. -
Complain and demand a 4k touch screen!
-
Huh weird. I ordered mine on the 17th and it still hasn't changed yet.
They must love you more
-
I received mine last week - it initially had an estimate of a month to be manufactured and delivered...but it came in just over 3 weeks. Not terrible, but wish it was faster. Here's my opinions on the machine:
Pros:
- Keyboard feels incredible
- CPU/GPU are very powerful for such a small machine
- Light and thin (much more so than most other gaming laptops)
- Very high quality build/feel (I've taken it apart as well, and I stand by this)
- Screen actually looks quite decent in my opinion...I've seen far, far worse (as long as you have it at the right angle)
- Power connector is nice, similar to a USB shape but different connection (this is coming from all Dell machines...those power connectors are horrible beyond imagination)
- Plays Diablo 3 RoS very smoothly at max settings (maybe 25% slower than my GTX 670/i5 3570k on my desktop)
--- When a ton of stuff is going on on-screen, it does slow down a lot as expected, but it's manageable - and settings can be turned down to reduce this
- Taking the machine apart is extremely easy, even the battery can be replaced pretty easily
--- Coming from Dell machines I was a bit nervous about this, but it's about as easy to do as most of the Dell's I've worked with
- Battery lasts a reasonable amount of time (5hrs with average stuff, >1.5hrs for gaming with 30fps cap), provided you setup your power settings appropriately
- Doesn't get very hot at all.. absolute highest I've see is 72C on CPU and GPU
--- Compared to +85C on my Dell XPS 17
--- Also the heat can only be felt above the keyboard (closer to the screen) so it's unnoticeable
- Screen hinge is nice and smooth/sturdy
--- Some of the Dell's I've dealt with were horrendous.. so much play in the hinge, it literally made me cringe (rhyme intended)
- AC WiFi is awesome, provided you have an AC adapter - I don't have any experience with non-AC routers yet with it but it should be perfectly fine
Cons:
- Keyboard is the bilingual one, and apparently Canadians can't get the English US keyboard unless they order through the US site (and get it shipped to the US)
- Screen viewing angles
- Hybrid HDD isn't nearly as fast as an SSD, but a bit faster than most HDDs
Overall I love the machine, and have even grown used to this terrible bilingual keyboard...which really surprised me. I've replaced the Hybrid drive with an SSD (as I planned to right off the bat) - this thing is ridiculously fast.
I think most of you will change your minds about the screen when you see it firsthand - not to mention - IPS displays tend to have a slower response time and than TN displays, so I think they made a decent choice. Sure, there are better TN panel displays, but this one isn't horrible by any means. Colours *seem* accurate, brightness can go higher than I'd ever want it to, and the viewing angles don't bother me since it's easy to get the right angle quickly.gh0st2311 likes this.
