Does any one in this thread managed to replace the stock touch screen with an IPS touch panel?or heard about someone did it? I found a maintain manual released by lenovo helpful with introducing the model of all the parts that are used to build a Y50,.However, I can't figure out the specific unit of the touch screen panel so I couldn't find any information about the compatible panels.
Anyone can share any info about this issue?

The place I always buy replacement screens from is laptopscreen.com but they don't even have the Y50 listed yet, so I sent them an email request for the different Y50 screens. I'll post back here once I get any info from them.

Which display do you have (Chi Mei or AU Optronics)? Given other reviews, I'd wager the AUO, since the Chi Mei apparently has appalling viewing angles (there is no way to have the entire screen with no colour shifting - there will always be some colour shift somewhere on the screen).

Those who are content with their displays seem to all have the AUO version. Some have also admitted their past machines all had average displays, so they don't see much difference with this one.

Which makes sense. Unless you've been using a superior display, you wouldn't know any different.

Also, TN displays typically have around 2ms response times. Modern IPS displays now are around 5ms. Which is normally not noticeable, depending on your usage.

And if you read some of the reviews, certain people have found the display so bad they returned the laptop for that one reason. It really depends on the individual.

Blessed are those who are content with this display, because then you have a great laptop at a great price.

Unfortunately for me, I'm used to my desktop Dell Ultrasharp, and an Alienware 14 with that great IPS display. So I'm not getting my hopes up. I might change out the panel if the rest of the laptop hits all the right buttons for me.

What kind of FPS are you getting in Diablo 3?

I'm amazed no one has complained about heat yet. I've run BF4 for an hour at medium settings and the thing feels like it could melt my F2-F12, and top number row keys. Also, I get a random 1-2 seconds of full-on-freeze lag every 30 minutes to an hour.

Maybe something wrong with your machine? There are some movies on youtube an no one complains. One movie even shows measured temps on hole laptop surface after hour of playing BF4. It was warm but not so warm/hot You described.

Hi, so I just got my Lenovo y50 touch and I was wondering if the GeForce gtx 860m is already in use and is there a way to stop using intel graphics card? Sorry i'm not a techy guy.

I'm actually not sure which display mine has - I'll have to check that tonight - but from my experience it really isn't bad at all...the keyboard layout bothers me a lot more. I'm used to my Dell 2408WFP at work, as well as an ASUS VE278Q at home - so I'm not comparing to junk monitors by any means. One thing, I don't see reds and greens perfectly (partially colour blind) so that may play into me being okay with the colours - but the white looks perfect to me.

I get a max of like 115FPS when there isn't anything going on on-screen, and I think it dips down to just under 60FPS when things get really crazy (with 4 ppl spamming abilities and tons of enemies). I should double check those numbers though since I wasn't paying that much attention...all I know is it plays really smoothly and that's what really matters :)

You should be able to access the settings just fine on the pre-installed NVIDIA control panel. I haven't updated my GPU drivers at all and this option is still available in the NVIDIA control panel.

that's fine, starting 340.43 you don't need this anymore, lenovo's 860m is already registered by nvidia. so whenever you are updating for the next patch, you should be able to just install it right away whether or not you used my instruction before

I'll be swapping out the HDD for a SSD.

For those who have done it, are thinking of doing it, or a just knowledgeable about SSDs...

Which of the two would you personally buy? The prices are in CDN, all-in after taxes, shipping, rebates, coupons, etc. I live in Canada, so I'm sticking to Canadian retailers, otherwise I'll get nailed with customs duties.

    $241
Buy the Seagate 600 Series 480GB SSD at TigerDirect.ca

    $261
Crucial MX100 CT512MX100SSD1 2.5" 512GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.ca

I personally wouldn't buy anything other than Samsung SSD's (I bought an 840 for my Y50) but if you are going to buy something else get the MX100. And it's cheaper on Amazon.ca (use pcpartpicker to find the cheapest price ( Crucial MX100 512GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (CT512MX100SSD1) - PCPartPicker Canada)

hey guys, i am kinda sick and tired of waiting this laptop to come out, and I don't think the 4k display would be better than the other competitors like asus g750 and aw 17, should i just go with aw or asus, or just wait patiently which I feel the right thing to do but very hard.

The Samsung drives are a bit too expensive for my tastes. Close to $50 more.

I'm trying to stick to $250 all-in, so a sale price of around $220 or so. I have to pay 13% sales tax here.

I don't do any real work on the laptop other than gaming, so top performance isn't really a concern for me.

So I have been patiently waiting for a review of the 4k production models. I know they are coming soon but I have been waiting since CES.

But now the Lenovo Website - Is not listing any y50 4K models at the present time. Anyone have any information?

    All I want is a ultra high res (4k preferable) 14 / 15 Inches - i7 computer quad - 16gb of ram.

At the rate things are going the Asus GX500 will be more available / reviewed before the Y50.

Thanks- I just had the original y50 page bookmarked and it just dropped the UHD 4k models. My bad for not looking harder.

Maybe this is Lenovo distancing the Bad TN screens of the 1080p models with the UHD Models.

Just cant wait for the first review / look / impression.

Has anybody seen the UHD Y50's on other sites, yet? I want to know where to go for the 7260 WIFI card. Last time, I pounced on the highest model of the Y50 touch before seeing the better deals/components from third party vendors.

The only other 4k version I've seen is by amazon and Excaliburpc. I'm not sure which WiFi card that has because I didnt see one listed. however, that version is still a bad deal IMO because it only has 256gb ssd and 4700hq instead of 4710 as well as only 2gb vram all for only $100 cheaper so even if it has 7260 the lenovo model would still be more cost effective

can someone tell me if this laptop is meant to last ~4 years? Im looking at other computers with relatively similar specs and some that are even inferior but have way higher price tags. This leaves me with some doubt that maybe the build is not well or it wont last very long. Even the lenovo t series are much more expensive when they have comparative specs.

You'll get the most reliable laptops from the thinkpad line or just form a desktop. The Y50 is going to be fast but it doesnt have the thinkpad durability.

Absolutely, yes. The build quality and temperatures are fantastic on the Y50, and the card should see you gaming on benchmark-worthy AAA titles on at least low settings (probably medium, or even high with reduced res and some tweaking) four years from now.

EDIT: I'm basing this off of the fact that my 5.5 year old Dell M1530 can play current games at lowest settings

    Greetings Folks,
I have come here with some information about the display of lenovo y50.

about 8 days ago, i asked a lenovo sales rep about the display panel of y50 with uhd. The rep was not so sure and said it might be tn panel same as the non 4k models.

Today , i asked two reps about the y50 4k model display panel. Both of them were pretty confident it is an IPS display. One of them took saome time and gave me confirmation too.
This is a good news to all potential buyers as the display with definitely be better than the avg tn panel . the question is by how much ???

I wouldn't trust anything a Lenovo Rep says. They often have no idea.

Not their fault, just poor communication from the company to its employees.

the chinese 4k model is out and a reseller posted a couple pics

btw I think it comes downscaled to 1080p because otherwise there's no way the texts can be this big EDIT: nvm lenovo just jacked up the text size to the maximum

all 4k panels are glossy so yes you can see that glare but you also get brighter colors

color checks? for those who have the fhd models you can compare

the guy himself said it's an IPS display, which we know is impossible because samsung doesn't make IPS so it's a PLS display, but you get what he means and he's most definitely correct because obviously he's the one who has the models. from the viewing angle test we can say pretty much for sure it's PLS indeed.

that being the good news, the bad news would be the amount of glare in this display. even for me, who prefers glossy over matte any day is kinda surprised with the reflections

IPS is PLS. PLS is just what Samsung calls their IPS displays, as far as I know. Probably just a marketing gimmick.

there's a small difference. samsung claims PLS are cheaper to make and have faster response times, call it marketing bs you want but those are differences. on a spec sheet for samsung you won't find IPS, so to prevent people from complaining later that they see something other an IPS, I put this out clear

Thanks for sharing. What is the website source of these images?
The 4K Display looks really, really, really good. I wouldn't worry about the reflections, it is normal to get such reflections on the glossy screens especially on dark colors (black-blue), the Touch version may reduce reflections a tiny bit because it will include an infinite touch layer, will see. But overall it looks gorgeous.

yeah I just posted the source. citations these days...

I own a glossy display and I typically don't get that much glare. unless I put light directly at it usually I had no problems with reflections. this is probably because the conditions the photo are taken

Hi guys, I have a question for you. I haven't read all this beast of a post 'cause I've been reading the one about MSI GS60 for past 2 days and my will to read another one twice as long kind of left me, so I've only skimmed through this one. If somewhere in here was this asked and answered already, feel free to just direct me to that page, but I've tried to google this and nothing came up. So finally for my question: what kind of SSD Lenovo uses in these Y50 laptops? Is it any good, or is it some cheap PoS that would be better to replace ASAP?
