I so badly want to order the Y50 UHD now but still have some doubts about the 48hz vs 60. I am wondering how come there are no professional review for Y50 FHD yet it's almost been a month since the laptop came out. Can in be the Lenovo is just selling the laptops that were messed up (hence keyboard, wifi, audio problems) during the production now to get rid of them first? Also maybe Lenovo is waiting to get feedback so they can integrate it in the next batch of y50's any ideas?

It's only been less than 5 days since the 4k models have been shipped to customers. I've been waiting since I saw it at ces. And still am until a good review will go up.

It's time for a new laptop and I've been researching for the past month or so...yeah I'm anal about it. I think I've settled on the Y50. My job takes me to stores where I've seen 4K and 1080p screens side by side running the same content over and over and over again. Yes there is a difference but it's so small just not worth the added $300+ to me. I run an external 27" IPS monitor and that's good enough. When I upgrade next time 4K panels will probably be the norm. If I get the urge I'm sure I'll be able to find a 4K panel to install in the mean time.

well, at least in Germany, the DOS-model isn't cheaper per se. you can get the FHD-model with the 1 TB HDD and i7-4710 starting from 899€ - with Win8.1. with DOS you get the Y50 also at 899€, but with the i5-4200H. strange but so far those are the options.

Well in Malaysia i can get this dos model for RM3599 ~ 1123.46 US Dollar
    Intel I7 4710HQ 2.5GGZ PROCESSOR
    8G DDR3 1600MHZ RAM
1TB HARDDISK 5400RPM HARDDISK (its not hybrid)
    Nvidia GTX860M Display Adapter 4GB
    15.6" Full HD Screen
    Red Color Backlit Keyboard

Windows 8.1 version would cost about RM3899 ~ 1217.11 US Dollar
    Worth it going Dos version?

well, at least the Amazon.rices went right up to one grand. there is still one offer for 899€ right now. I will be watching the prices closely ...

for the question about worth it going the DOS-version: it depends on the price you have to pay for Windows. the advatage is: you get a clean install of Windows, so no bloatware and stuff. the disdvanteg: you have to do it yourself. if you think you can manage that: go for the cheaper option (most likely laptop+seperate OS).

I'm a bit weary about buying a lenovo laptop at launch. My last lenovo laptop had issues and had to be sent back to get fixed. Oh, and the first time they fixed it they messed up something else and I had to send it back again. So basically, going to wait and read reviews quite a bit before deciding.

so u are saying it is definitely better to just go the Dos version and install windows on it? Is it better to go for Windows 8.1 or just win 7?

Bought from Klick, and as I've come to expect, Brian was quick and accommodating with his customer service. They're covering the return shipping and should be sending me a new unit today. I have to say it again, Klick is the way to go if any of you are thinking of pulling the trigger on a Y50 - aces all around.

Does Klick offer the same warranty options as found on the Lenovo site? If I decide to pull the trigger on the y50 UHD version, I would want the 2-year warranty as well.

From what I was told, Klick doesn't offer any kind of extended warranty themselves, but you can extend your warranty directly through Lenovo. I'll be doing that once I get a fully functional model hah.

Yes, you can go right to the warranty page on the Lenovo site, enter your Serial Number and take it from there: Warranty upgrades and support | Lenovo | (US)

Or as recommended above by kcimpulse, Squaretrade is a good route to go as well if you don't want to use Lenovo for whatever reason.

Warranties are done through Lenovo. If you buy through Klick you get the same factory warranty as if you bought it directly from Lenovo. If you are looking for an extended warranty then there's plenty of places that will sell you one.

That's kind of my feeling as well when I first purchased the FHD Y50.. I felt as though the tech for 4K hasn't been totally optimized yet.. The main reason I want to switch the display is because it's a better glossy screen as opposed the the mid level matte screen we get.. But now I'm taking a wait and see approach as the locked 48Hz has strayed me away from getting one..

Might help you make your decision: 15 FPS vs. 30 FPS vs. 60 FPS - Bo Allen. I was down on the 48hz as well, but at the end of the day I want a pretty game on a nice display at a constant 48 fps. The 860m is not going to be hitting 60fps on ultra or high for many of the games recently out or coming out in the future.

Finally pulled the trigger and got the base model (no 4k) from Klick. It shipped quite fast! Only got to play with it for about an hour so far because I had to run over and pick it up from UPS pretty late, but here are some first impressions from an average non-techie user:

    * I purposely looked at the screen and adjusted settings BEFORE checking to see which panel I got. When I first saw the screen, I was concerned but realized the biggest issue (for me) was that the default setting was VERY dim! When I upped the brightness, it made a huge difference. Based on advice from this forum, I changed to Picture Mode, set Brightness at 0, Contrast at 50, and debated over the Gamma. For pictures/colors, I liked 1.2 because I could see more details. But as mentioned previously, this made it more difficult to read black text on a white background, so I ended up switching Gamma to 1.0 because that noticeably helped darken the text. I saw you can also calibrate color but haven't gotten a chance to try that yet! I also changed to 100% text instead of 125%. These settings helped improve the screen *immensely*. I don't care about viewing angles as long as one or two people sitting next to me can see the screen for a movie, but most of the time if I'm with people I use the TV to watch movies anyhow.

    * Before I changed settings, the screen looked incredibly bad compared to the Asus N56JR, which I had briefly. After settings, it still didn't look as good as the Asus (whose screen really popped), but it was acceptable/closer to a normal, average screen. Granted, this is coming from someone who previously had a Dell Inspiron from 2007 so I'm not comparing monitors side by side or analyzing the numbers. The colors are a little bit off compared to what I'm used to, but I'd only notice because of other screens I use, not because they look horrible. I feel like the screen at default settings was "unusable" (really hard to see with the dimness) but after settings it was "acceptable" considering the other specs. I may change my mind on this after more use. Last night I tried a few websites and watched two videos (one cartoon, one live action) and felt like the screen was fine for watching movies. It's not as exciting as the Asus screen. But at least this one is not defective. The screen is only okay, but it comes down to whether I can accept it as part of the whole package.

    * After that I checked to see which panel I got, and actually thought it might be the AU, but unlucky me, I got the Chi Mei! It was important to me to form my own impressions before being influenced by the brand. I'm disappointed that I got the Chi Mei because I believe you guys that the AU is better. But no one is able to confirm these things pre-purchase, so I'm not sure what else to do! I wish I could get the AU for the same price since those folks are getting a better deal, but since I've already returned two defective Asus recently, I can't really spare too much time to return a third computer when all I could do was "hope" for the AU screen, no guarantees. (I don't have the know-how or tech confidence to change the screen, but probably know someone who could do it for me if it continued to bother me, though then I'd worry I'd end up with unanticipated issues.) I did notice that mine was manufactured in China on 5/18, which was somewhat disappointing as I thought ordering later might possibly help me get an AU screen if they were phasing Chi Meis out. For me I wanted matte instead of glossy and the base model is cheaper than Touch or 4k (neither of which I need).

    * Everything else: I only got to type about a paragraph on the keyboard so far, but the feel is good and I haven't seen the keystroke issue yet, although usually you have to type for longer to know for sure. (I'm typing this at a work computer so it doesn't count!) My biggest concern was to avoid that defect and enjoy the keyboard since I write a lot. It played videos well, so much better than my old one obviously. Haven't tried games yet but I expect great things. It's thin and fairly light, after weighing it was 5.4 pounds. Sound has been great so far, both with and without earbuds. If I put my earbuds in and am not playing anything, I can hear something, the way you can hear a television is on even if the screen is black. I don't know if that qualifies as white noise or not, but I do not hear it when I'm playing videos. I don't hear any static. I barely used it so far but wifi has been fine. It's just nice to have a new computer after waiting this long! Hope it continues to impress, will update if I notice other things.

I just came across an issue with the audio jack though, I tried to plug in my apple earbuds, but it wouldn't fit in. I put in a considerable amount of force in it, and yet it still doesn't fit. It keeps saying "You just plugged a device from the audio jack." and "You just unplugged a device from the audio jack."
I can get the thing to stay in the jack if I push hard enough, but it doesn't go in completely. Only the left speakers get the audio while the right side earbuds is barely audible.

I just ended up putting more force and twisting and turning the connector in, and it worked I guess. It's just a really rough fit that requires some force to jam in, hopefully it improves over time.

L1ght, you're right, it was difficult to push USBs and my Apple earbuds into the slots. Both worked but I had to give it a second burst of force before it clicked in! After that I could hear stereo just fine. Good luck!

Savings of $250 off the MSRP $1799. Plus I saved more than $100 in tax. Obviously if your state tax is nil, then the savings is minor.

Hey @Xentar712 have you tried this?

Graphics — Custom Resolutions & Modes

There is a custom resolution setting within Intel HD Graphics settings for this specific reason. Intel says it is disabled on some manufactures but if you go to C:/Windows/System32 you can run the CustomModeApp.exe and gain access to setting custom resolutions and refresh rates for unsupported monitors or monitors that you want to force custom refresh rates on.

The link has all the information for enabling it and what not.

EDIT: These settings are available on my Alienware M14X (Hoping to upgrade to the Y50 4k) by choosing Advanced settings when opening the Intel HD Settings so it isnt an "Only Desktop" setting. I do not have CustomModeApp.exe in my System32 folder, but that may be because the settings are enabled on my computer?

Got my Y50 base non touch in from Klick today. Did a clean install and just got all the drivers installed. I checked and I have the chi mei panel but it really doesn't bother me. Like at all. I noticed that the whites don't pop as much as my old laptop (Acer 4820TG) but it's definitely not a deal breaker for me. I haven't done much with it yet but so far I'm really happy with my purchase.

*sigh* why does one need to own something to be able to talk it about exactly? Do you realize how many images of them have been posted? Color gamut percentages are also known. I don't understand this mindset; I would rather not waste my time ordering and then returning something, thanks. You're like those people that say sports analysts don't know crap cause they haven't played the game. Right, cause Michael Jordan is doing great as a GM

Activate it with your product key. Full retail and not an upgrade key right? If for some reason it came with say Windows 7 and you upgraded to Windows 8, you'd have to do a clean install of 7 then upgrade to 8. Probably not your case though. If it won't activate with the key just call Microsoft they will walk you through it.

It's fine if you don't want to buy something and then have to return, but if you know you are not buying it then why keep complaining? I really don't the point of bashing the screen all day when you know for sure you are not gonna buy it.

Fyi, a lot of time people say sport analysts don't know crap because they haven't played the game is because what they say is viable actually isn't, howpeople should play on paper is different from how people actually play on court. So yes a lot of sport analysts don't know crap because they are thinking too ideally

I was just about to fall asleep when the Precog alarm went off.

The Three Precogs of the Pre-Crime Division foresaw that a harmless discussion in this thread would evolve into a forum rule violation. The Precogs report that probability of this incident occurring is HIGH.

But I don't see any real violations here.

We ask members to stay vigilant and watch out for any signs of such an impending violation. But above all, to remain calm in case the violation SHOULD occur and simply report it to... well, that would have to be the Crime Division, since Pre-Crime failed to intercept in that case.

Pre-Crime Division thanks you for your cooperation in this matter, and for being a loyal citizen.

So after some digging around I found that some users have been successful with disabling optimus through modding the bios. However, it seems that only some computers are capable of this. If the nvidia card is directly wired to the display then if you are able to get a modded bios that let's you disable optimus you should be able to force the nvidia GPU to run all the time.

However some computers have the Intel GPU hooked up to the display instead and the nvidia GPU essentially buffers through that. If that's the case even if you were to mod the bios to disable optimus it wouldn't work because the nvidia card needs the Intel card to work in this case.

If the y50 falls in the second category then we are at the mercy of Intel and hoping they release 60 hz drivers. If its the first though and the discrete GPU is wired to the screen a modded bios should do the trick.

    Got this info from here

    http://superuser.com/questions/282734/how-to-disable-nvidia-optimus-on-a-dell-xps-15

This also confirms 100% that not being able to go over 48 hz or any custom resolution is a driver issue and not a bandwidth issue

    Just Intel being annoying

Yea I just got a Windows 8.1 pro iso like everyone had been saying and booted it via USB. I just looked up my key using Berlac Advisor but when I tried to use it to activate Windows I would not work. Did I use the wrong iso or something?

No, he's just telling the truth, I've had one with the Chi Mei panel and promptly returned due to the poor quality screen.
    1) washed out colors
    2) very bad viewing angles
Overall it was a pretty decent laptop but the I couldn't overlook how bad the screen was considering I value screen quality, not that I'm a screen snob but if I'm going to be staring at a screen all day I better like it and the LENOVO screen was not good.
There is no need to call someone out if what he posts is true, some people can get over how bad the screen is some cannot. End of story.

I had the same issue. The install didn't find my embedded key, and the key I found using a key finder didn't work.
