All Y50 Touch models on Lenovo's website are currently "Temporary Unavailable". Let's see if this means anything. Maybe the release of 4K Touch models is imminent.

Do any of u guys put a protective layer like a silicone sheet over ur keyboard. I seem to sweat alot when gaming, will there leave prolonged effects like fading of the keys?

Wow, I stand corrected. I never knew that since they always seemed to omit the non touch versions of models in the past.

I signed up to the forums just to contribute here to this thread.

ordered TD item # LCU-102411218 and received It yesterday. Listing claims it is a IPS screen. What I received was the crap CM Tn screen. On the phone right now with CS getting a return shipping and another laptop mailed to me now. They claim I received the incorrect one. Everything else except the screen checks out so my hunch is that they never fixed the incorrect listing.

When I receive the new laptop, and it ends up being the same crap what would you guys recommend? Ask for an upgrade to the 4k screen, or another laptop entirely? Anyone have any history of dealing with tigerdirect CS and how willing they are to take care of you?

    Hello,

It was confirmed a long time ago in this thread that these are not IPS screens - Lenovo, as of yet, does not make a Y50 FHD with an IPS. Obviously if you can get an upgrade to 4K, more power to you! I think that's a long shot, though. Especially since they claim you received an incorrect one - they are probably going to just want to send you out another incorrect one as it looks like they are doing.

Actually, I called the store to verify the specs and availability and the Microsoft employee was unable to apply the student discount to that laptop. Still, 1400 isn't that bad

I've been following this thread since March. Thanks to all for the great info.

I finally registered to give positive feedback on working with Brian from Klick. He answered all my questions quickly. I ordered the UHD 4GB/16GB/512GB SSD last night and got a shipping label this morning. NIIIIICE! :notworthy:

what is interesting is that the CS Rep said replacement laptop is being shipping from the manufacturer next week, they are not sending me the same that they already have in stock. Maybe it is something new? Im not holding my breathe. Worst case scenario I get the same thing, still collect rewards points due to the credit hold on the second laptop while I wait to mail back the first one.

Unfortunately this thread is near 700 pages and I was not willing to read it all so I didn't catch the known TD issue :(

for just under 1,200 including tax and next day delivery its the best deal on a laptop with these specs I could find, I just do not like expecting one thing, and receiving another.

I will update once the new one arrives, If it is indeed the same thing, I would hope TD would take care of me the third time around considering they tied up $2,400 of my funds, hours on the phone and time going to UPS for returns.

I am a casual gamer and using this laptop for my Master's in Nursing mostly. The screen is decent for everday use. That is until you play a game and see how muted the colors are and poor the shading

Is the screen of this laptop really that bad as everyone says? Should I go for this or the MSI GS70?

Lenovo dropped the ball on the screen no doubt, for what it would cost extra to place a good panel I don't know what they were thinking. Perhaps trying to sell more 4k laptops for 3-400 more?

If you are a hardcore gamer, or do anything with graphics, get something else, or expect to immediately replace the display with a better unit as people have mentioned doing. the rest of the laptop in my opinion is top notch and hard to find someone with these specs for 1,200 including next day shipping and tax.

    Lenovo y50 1TB with 8gb SSD hybrid, 16gb ram, GeForce 860m w4GB, 4700 i7, nice JBL speakers.

It is lightweight, has great battery life, keyboard is nice with backlight. the touchpad is a little touchy, but I use a usb wireless mouse anyways most of the time.

    Hey guys. Some confusions again.
    1. What is it with 45hz and 60hz. Is the fhd model 60hz and 4k model 45hz. What if we use the 4k model in fhd mode ?
    2. Does the microsoft store or lenovo site give u student discount ?

Unfortunately I cannot speak to the Y50 or Lenovo laptops in particular. But usually the manufacturer's recovery will restore to factory state, including all bloatware.

When you perform a clean install in UEFI mode (which is default on all Win8 computers) Windows Setup will create some system partitions in addition to the Windows partition itself, including EFI System partition (boot) and the hidden Microsoft reserved partition (MSR).

I personally like to keep my Windows partition small (say 48GB) and have all my data on a separate Data partition. That way, I can update and swap out the Windows partition (using partition images) without affecting my data. But it takes some work and discipline to set it up, as described here.

Did they verify that the specs that they have listed are correct? It seems suspicious that that they have a product (UHD Touch) listed before Lenovo does.

Buy Lenovo Y50-70 4K Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core i7 - Microsoft Store

So with those specs I get a military or student discount that knocks it down to 1349.10 Is it worth it? I'd been eyeing the 1150 model at bestbuy and using shop discover for 5% back (obviously paying off immediately) or the 10% BB financing offer.

Seems to me that adding the 4k monitor, a 256gb ssd, and 8gb extra ram is easily worth 200 bucks. My only issue is I was waiting to see how the G551 and GX500 are, however they seem like they will be nowhere near y50 in terms of quality. I'm in no Rush but am looking to have a laptop in 10 days or so.

I don't see why not, the only downside is no student discount on it yet. And if you have a Microsoft store nearby you can return it there if there's an issue; no need to ship it back. About to pull the trigger myself

Actually the student and military discounts are both active on it. You have to sign into your discount portal,at "Save on our selection of PCs", click see all, then click gaming PCs. It's in the list at -149.90. I'm processing the order now.

I'm curious to see if the MS Store's 4K Touch has the bilingual keyboard in Canada or not. Personally, I hate that keyboard and I'll never buy another one with it.

    Discount: $149.90
    Subtotal: $1,349.10
    Sales tax: $101.18
    Order total: $1,450.28

Order completed. Odd thing though, I used Paypal and it never asked me for verification. Maybe something to do with my old xbox account or something, but the order was completed and the random available balance in my paypal account hit 0, I didn't see the bank draft for the rest yet though. They said it was in stock so it should be here next week.

I would take any information that you get from the Microsoft Store reps with a larger grain of salt than you do with the Lenovo reps. I just got off of a live chat with them and he was completely useless. Whatever information that they get, they get it from the product page on their store or they use Bing.

Since the GPU is not listed on the Canadian MS Store, he first told me that it was an integrated Nvidia GPU and shares the 16 GB of system memory, next he told me that it was a GT 650m 2GB GPU (from his Bing search), and then . Just useless.

If someone can get a model number from MS Store, we may be able to try to look it up. I personally think it's a mistake - either a UHD non-touch, or a touch FHD .. but anything is possible!

Laptopmag.com just reviewed the Lenovo Y50 here:

Lenovo Y50 Review - Gaming Laptops

Wow Laptopmag really tore the Y50 a new one. They hated the screen and kept on commenting on how much better MSI's Ghost was. Too bad they didn't review the UHD one.

there're some serious problems with their gaming benchmarks...

"The Y50 stumbled a bit on "BioShock Infinite," hitting 42 fps on 1080p on Low, missing the 47 fps average. The P50T fared a little better with 46 fps, while the Ghost easily lapped both notebooks, scoring 91 fps. At the highest setting, the Y50's frame rate dropped to an unplayable 17 fps, which is only a tick behind the P50T. The GS60 Ghost kept chugging along at 35 fps."

    notebookcheck shows 65fps on ultra

"During the "Metro: Last Light" benchmark, the Y50 obtained 30 fps at 1080 on Low, matching the Laptop Mag playability threshold but missing the 32 fps average. Once again, the laptop was outclassed by the P50T and GS60, which notched 36 and 53 fps, respectively. With the settings on Maximum, the Y50 and P50T were on even ground at 7 fps, matching the average, while the Ghost maintained its dominance, with 12 fps."

notebookcheck gives 53fps on high and 28 on ultra

    p50t has a much inferior gpu and gs60 has a kepler 860m.

honestly, I don't know how they did this review... did they like run everything on intel graphics?

in conclusion, this review is as bs as it can get

I missed microsofts 4k touch model! If it's real it's literally everything I could possible want in a laptop. Plus I'm a student so it could be a great price... I just read the last 300 pages of this thread and I want to make a purchase but there just seem to be too many loopholes. I was going to but the FHD version and replace the monitor but since I'm going to have this computer for a long time I want to add some future proofing with 4k. I would much rather have touch but since no one has been able to replace the screen that's out of the question. I'm a freelance graphic artist so I need a pretty good monitor; I'll finish on my better screens at home. Also a heavy gamer, also going to college. 4k+touch sounds too good to be true. :( I'm bummed now. Also thanks Brian for helping out so much.

It'll be unlocked at some point. I was literally a button push away from buying the FHD version on Amazon when I thought I'd look at the 4K one last time... it was suddenly a $150 off... dropped it to just about $1200... bought it quick. No touch though...personalty I don't like touch screens. Can't find it for under $1500 now on there.

Sorry if this has been covered in the roughly 600 pages of the 659 total I have not read but.... Any owners looked into a second ac adapter? Possibly slimmer/smaller or just to have a second in a second location? Come up with any good tips? I am coming up with NOTHING!

I may have to wait a while, but wanted to check.
    Thanks!

It looks like that most of the 4k models sold by TigerDirect, Amazon, Newegg, Microsoft are including last year's i7-4700HQ processor while the two models at the Lenovo site include this year's i7-4710HQ. Does anyone have an opinion on the difference?

.1 Ghz is really not going to be noticeable .. When Lenovo had both the 4700's and 4710's, they had a $10 price difference between them, which is about how much it's worth.

almost none, unless you have OCD like me that always want the newer one
    100mhz is basically indifferent

lenovo uses their proprietary adapter port so unless you find a compatible one from lenovo, you can't use the ones on the market

I think he meant those portable phone batteries? those won't last for an hour...but you can use it for charging I guess if you plug it in...

I was just going to say that, lol. Real benchmarks have the Y50 ~5-10% ahead of the GS60 Ghost in GPU power because it's a Maxwell (and FAR ahead of the P50T). The GS60 Ghost Pro with the GTX870 is a different story but that laptop can seriously be used as a stove. I was considering the GS60 quite a lot and think it's a very good computer, but I wouldn't go for the Pro version - these thin gaming laptops run hot enough even with the GTX860. And in that case the Y50 wins. CPU-wise it's a bit of a different story as the Y50 throttles more, but in exchange it runs much less hot and feels much cooler to the touch. With ThrottleStop the CPU load can be made the same anyways so both laptops have similar performance.

The only good reason to go for a GS60 Ghost over the Y50 is the screen, imo. But that's a pretty compelling reason, as the Ghost's screen is admittedly fantastic. In retrospect I would still go for the Y50 because it feels a lot cooler to the touch (regardless of how hot its CPU and GPU get) and its build looks nicer (in my opinion). But it definitely isn't an easy decision. In a few years I'm sure there'll be thin gaming laptops with neither huge overheating issues nor mediocre screens but for now a trade-off definitely has to be made.

    I mean something like this:

    http://www.amazon.com/20000mAh-Mult...18316&sr=8-1&keywords=laptop+external+battery

This should be able to double the battery life of the Y50 pretty easily, is smaller and slimmer than the brick that comes with it. All you need to do to use an external battery pack as your AC charger is just plug it into the wall and plug the other side into your laptop. They will both charge. The models that have smart voltage controls are a bit better and easier to use.

I realized that after I posted haha, didn't bother to edit though. It'll be here tomorrow, here's hoping it wasn't an error. Although they had a LOT of verbage indicating it was 4k and touch, I doubt someone would have made that many mistakes. We'll see.

This only outputs 3 Amps at 19 Volts while the original charger outputs 6.75 Amps at 20 Volts. This is a significant difference.

Here is the original charger... it's $100...

Getting the one off the microsoft store. I'll update you when it gets here. Their website is incredibly slow right now. Shame they charge tax... I got it down to 1.35k with the student discount.

AARRRRRRGGHHHHH !!! I hate how right people are about Lenovo's complete and utter disaster with this whole Y50 thing. Goddammit ive been waiting over a month for my Y50 ( ordered June 13th ), only to find out that its been pushed back now to August 5th. Im seriously considering cancelling - and been spending the last 2 hours searching for an alternative. This is nuts man; I mean, how the hell do you run a business like this ?

What do you mean by quality? Both those laptops will likely be of better build quality and materials, not to mention will have significantly better screens.
