Made my order! :) Soon, soon. Took me 1.5 hours with how slow the MS store is right now.

I dunno, man. The soft touch finish Lenovo put on the Y50 is pretty sweet. Super importantly, it doesn't get as warm as metal does even when taxing the CPU and GPU. The CPU temps on the GS60 Ghost and Y50 may both reach 90+ degrees Celsius but the GS60 Ghost will literally give you severe burns if you use it on your lap due to its all-metal construction. While the Y50 feels warm at most no matter what and is usually really cool to the touch.
It also looks pretty nice and feels comfy to the hands/wrists. And it even repels dirt and fingerprints! I dunno, I really like it. The metal finish on the lid also looks nice, and even the glossy screen bezel fits in somehow (preferably under a touchscreen that prevents scratches from appearing on it). It isn't a unibody build but it's pretty nice regardless.

The GX500 and especially the G551 are going to be all metal and will probably get hot as hell like the GS60 Ghost does. And in my opinion, both look sort of garrish and ugly. You're right about their superior screen quality though,

Ordered mine on July 13 and was delivered on July 16. The model number is 59421858; it's not the 4k one and I bought it off of the Lenovo website. I guess I lucked out and didn't have my shipping date pushed back like a month.

You mean plugging the battery into the laptop's usb and having it draw power from the USB port?
You can do that? Do you have to do anything to let it know that you're wanting to charge off USB?

better build quality probably on gx500, g551 is just a next gen model for g550, being thicker. better materials? I have yet to see a PURE COPPER HEAT SINK on any asus notebook.

g551 probably won't suffer much from heat if it's 31mm thick, they would really have to screw up purposely on the cooling for that to happen. gx500 is questionable, the hinge vent cooling demonstrated on g550jk is about the best they can get, even if they change the heat pipe orientations, and that's still pretty hot. gx500 is much more of a concern with the thinner chassis

    Hi everyone!

This is actually my first post on this site. I just got my laptop, the y50 with a 512 ssd, 4gb vram, and the 17-4710. This thread really helped me make my decision to buy this laptop.
Now for my review. The screen is actually not that bad at all, and my viewing angles from side to side are fine, although up and down does result in washed out colors. still, there is a very wide angle in which i can turn the screen before quality is really affected. this may be because I have the auo screen, though. the keys feel a bit squishy, but you quickly get used to them. As for the numpad, the 0 is annoying for the first day or two, but you also get used to it really fast.

One thing that I was used to from my old laptops were the ability to control the back lighting and sound with fn shortcuts. I was disappointed when i saw on this thread that the y50 didnt have this, but apparently nobody reads the user manual... fn + up or down increases or decreases backlight level, and fn + right or left increases and decreases the volume. Im not sure if this was mentioned in the thread, but I hope that this was helpful to someone

I just had my Y50 4K open to put in a bigger SSD and the build quality was pretty nice IMO. I love metal...no more plastic.

Well I was able to get a good deal on the touch screen model! if everything goes well it should be shipped out next Wednesday. Hopefully it is has a better screen then the base model that everyone is saying is so horrible. I wanted to know what SSD you guys recommend to replace the 1TB hybrid drive that comes with it. Also what type of memory I should consider to upgrade this bad boy.

The only think I don't like is the Shift key is on the small side. I use a BT keyboard with it most of the time anyway. I love the soft touch finish.

Actually the notebookcheck review shows the g550jk gets hotter than the y50 with 850m

We can't be sure the g551 won't over heat though....

We'll have to hope the battery has the y50's power cord??

I don't understand why you wouldn't have just ordered the higher end model that comes with 16G of ram and a 512G SSD. It would be cheaper than buying them separately plus you would get the benefit of doubling the GPU's ram to 4G as well which you cannot modify later.

No one mentioned it NOT having it. And it was assumed we wouldn't have to mention it, considering it shows on the arrow keys themselves what they do when used in combination with the function key. As for the keyboard backlight, that was mentioned many times. Function key + space bar to change it. It cycles through off, 50%, and 100%.

I'm trying, really trying, after a week now to get used to the keyboard, but that half-sized right Shift key and the squishiness is making me not want to type on it at all; in fact, I just ordered a riser stand and external keyboard just to make it bearable! I've also started noticing that unregistered keystroke issue others have mentioned. In the past few days, my V and O keys became detached mid-typing, and I can't get the O key to sit flush anymore; it's slightly raised on one corner.

Also, even set to max speed repeat delay/rate, the arrow keys move the cursor left and right interminably slowly.

Hey Brian from @KlickOnline, I have a few questions for you but I do not have your email because I lack an ebay account at this time. I would be inquiring about your 4k y50's you have in stock, if you could shoot me a private message with your email that would be great.

I wonder how the Y50 can beat the MSI Ghost in FPS repeatedly in all other games on all settings, but in WoW the review states the Ghost gets 167 FPS, and the Y50 79 FPS?

Maybe because the y50 throttles the i7/does barely allow the turbo to be used, and WoW is pretty taxing on the CPU? But I´m not too sure about that

I was able to get the touch screen model for a decent enough discount that it was not worth spending the extra 400 dollars to get the 16 GB and 512G SSD. Concerning the video card, I am not a huge gamer I use it more for work and writing code. I do play some games but not enough where is going to bug me that I didn't spend an extra 400 dollars for it. I satisfied myself better by saving the money :D

He purchased from us - we ask to not put pricing on the forum as pricing fluctuates (and technically it's not allowed per forum rules).

A small correction here: There is nothing in our forum rules that prevents members from exchanging information about prices they paid for a computer or even published sale prices they've seen. In fact, that is a common and popular use of NBR forums.

What you are probably (and correctly) referring to, is that neither prices nor other promotional information is allowed in post content from members that have something to sell, or who are affiliated with such sellers. That is covered under Advertising Services in our forum rules:

Also, you are correct that we do not allow prices in Signatures, where promotional text is otherwise accepted:

The rule of thumb is simply that we do not want the forum threads to be a conduit for business and deal making or for any members to be profiteering from others (such as hidden Referral Tags in links, which we consider spam).

The help and assistance that you and other registered resellers provide to members here, is very welcome. Where it gets tricky, is when members ask you about pricing and promotions and discounts, which puts you in a difficult spot. I think you have generally handled that very well :)

I understand that prices fluctuate. I read the forum rules here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/site-suggestions-help-announcements/109941-forum-rules.html
it does not prohibit discussing pricing. If someone has a coupon code we can use on a website to purchase the notebook we are interested in, I would think that would be within the scope of this message forum. For example I believe I read somewhere earlier that you can get a 10% student discount on the Microsoft Store. I also discovered the Lenovo website has a student discount as well.

I have also seen that Klick Online has been an active member on this forum and has been quick to answer questions about Lenovo products - so thank you for that!

No shame, you're fine. As I tried to say, I think you are wearing your hat as reseller very well, and are providing good customer service here -- often having to walk that fine line. And your post gave me an opportunity to highlight these rules for other members as well.

I am just as eager as everyone else to hear the first report of someone actually getting this laptop and verifying that it is a 4K Touchscreen. Lenovo says they don't even make it (yet). And Microsoft Store can't verify an actual model number (the 8 digit Lenovo model number). So we're as in the dark as everyone else, and so are our contacts at Lenovo. Anxiously awaiting news!

I don't know why people are up in arms about the 2gb. The 860m couldn't even get close to handling any games at 4K, let alone maxing out VRAM. It's really a non issue at the moment

I put my order in earlier today and it shipped about an hour ago. Was told I could get free returns with no kind of restocking fee if I wasn't satisfied. Specs aren't 100% ideal, but the UHD Touch Display is what I wanted most. Curious to see what kind of wireless card it has.

Monitor ID is SDC4852, no manufacturer listed and I can't find anything online.

The great thing is this version from windows appears to have no bloatware. The only things by Lenovo in the control panel are:

    Energy Manager
    Easy camera
    One key recovery
    settings
    onekey theater
    user manuals
and two driver packages dated 2013

I am torn about this model also. My local store is suppose to stock it just not display it. But yes the Microsoft no bloatware is nice and they have the student / military discount.

Review this bad boy up- because im almost going to wait till the gx500 the screen sounds killer on that, but I could probably get this this weekend and not wait till most likely October.

What is the student/military discount? I cannot find it anywhere on the Canadian site. Is it only for the US store? I spoke with a sales rep and they said it wasn't part of the 10% off PCs for students.
