nope, kepler version for MSI
-
a kepler one.
The y50 is in a league of its own with pricing.(HOPEFULLY) -
I don't know... The clevo w230ss in continents outside of North America starts at $1000, and has a ~$300 upgrade to make it 4x900p, and it comes default with the maxwell gtx860m...
But you are right, it is beyond ugly... -
I didnt know they sold different architectures on the same chip. -
The kepler one is on the mxm version which lenovo doesn't do
-
That's probably the case. The y510p is already in a separate league of pricing
-
It's also 13" not 15"
-
thanks for the info! Just wondering why MSI chooses both Kepler and Maxwell in their new gaming laptop line up?
-
Today, Toshiba announced a 4k vers laptop for 1500 $, so, I think my guesses are good.
Edit : "Under 1500 $"
Edit 2 : nvm, under and is 1,499$
Edit 3 : sorry, 1,499.99..

That shouldn't make a difference. If anything, shouldn't it raise the price because it would be harder to fit those many pixels on a smaller screen?H01D3N likes this.

They just used Kepler. This is because Nvidia's SMX series of replaceable cards is Kepler only, and they wanted to use the SMX card.
-
i rather think that nvidia might be selling the kepler cards at a lower price to clear off their gk 104 chips.
-
If that is true, why aren't companies like sager and gigabyte using the cheapest version to save money? Or at least give us options?
-
Smaller companies like gigabyte aren't interested in making a ton of profit off their products (although they can get expensive). They just like getting customers, and they are more centered on a better gaming experience than making their next sale.
-
Because having that maxwell gpu is what makes people buy it over the stupid gs series.
-
- Gigabyte is by no means a small company
- No company in its right mind actually believes that, although that's what Razer would like you to think if Min-Liang Tan's comments on any product launch are to be believed

-
Interesting, what GPU is it using? How much SSD?
EDIT: Nevermind.. just found it.. so..
Radeon R9 M265X , pretty much a 750M , not very exciting. And a 1TB 5400RPM drive!? Are they nuts..
So an 860M, much more expensive GPU, add another couple hundred at least for a decent sized SSD, we're looking at $1899 minimum to design and spec that laptop the way it should have been done in the first place. -
I didn't say they were a small company, I said that they were a smallER company. And I stand by what I said in the sense that smaller companies have to try harder to make better products for the people so that they can actually get sales, because if they use cheap parts then they lose the customers that they need to stay in business. And many small companies actually use the "quality over quantity" idea. Just my opinion anyway, not trying to force it on people, sorry.
-
"For all that cash you'll get a 15.6-inch laptop with a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (no word on the specific model), up to 16GB RAM, an AMD Radeon R9 M265X discrete graphics card with 2GB RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. Other niceties include Windows 8.1, four USB 3.0 ports, backlit keyboard, SD card slot, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, HDMI out, and some brand name speakers from Harman Kardon."
The product announcement didn't say anything about SSD options. SSDs are better to aftermarket anyway. -
I edited my reply, but:
Radeon R9 M265X , pretty much a 750M , not very exciting. And a 1TB 5400RPM drive!? Are they nuts..
So an 860M, much more expensive GPU (It's nearly twice as fast as 750M..), add another couple hundred at least for a decent sized SSD, we're looking at $1899 minimum to design and spec that laptop the way it should have been done in the first place. If Lenovo can manage to beat the price of that Toshiba, with a much better design i might add, I'll be astonished. -

The GE series is using Maxwell due to the fact that it goes no higher than 860M. GS are all Kepler.
-
Notebook reviews released a comparison between the Kepler based versus Maxwell based GTX860m. Check it out.
Review Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M Maxwell vs. Kepler - NotebookCheck.net Reviews -
yes you are right.. GE's are Maxwell and GS's are Kepler.. confirmed by my local MSI distro
-
Yeah since the GS60 Pro version will have 870m I think
-
Question: Some sites say the Y50 has a DVD drive, and others don't. No pictures confirm this. Does anybody think it might have a disk drive? Additionally, do you think the cooling system is better than last-gen's, or is it still crappy? I want to know because the crappy cooling system is what did my Y480 in.

No more Ultra bay. Lenovo Y40 & Y50 Gaming Laptops | CES 2014 - YouTube -
Ultrabay is not the same as a dvd drive.
Also, The one revealed during CES may not be the final product. -
Hi guys, just something that I didn't see mentioned anywhere else in this thread: it seems that the Y50 will only have an HDMI port and no VGA / MiniDisplayPort... Does this mean it won't be possible to drive more than one display simultaneously? What is the expected max resolution of the HDMI port?

But the dvd drive on previous models was placed on the ultrabay slot. And while I agree that it might not be the final product, I think that they won't include that dvd drive anymore.
This lady that claims to be from lenovo, has confirmed that they removed that drive for good. Lenovo CES 2014 Y40 & Y50 Preview (HD) - YouTube -
yes Y50 will have the dvd drive.

It may be possible, that you will only have some optional external DVD/BluRay drive. All the presamples of the Y50 didn't have any optical drive and as usual, the notebooks won't change that much if they go into production.

It does look like there's no VGA out. As for the HDMI, I think it should be HDMI 1.4, with 4k at 30Hz.
-
I bet that they can't fit a DVD drive into a computer that is already .904 inches thin (23.9 mm).
However, this picture says differently. It also says that the Y40/Y50 will start at $999.
As for cooling, my guess is expect more overheating. A laptop that thin has smaller vents, not to mention they limited air intake on the bottom by adding a subwoofer. -
Other people recently have been saying that the different numbers for pricing are because there are two models. They say that the Y40 will range from $699 to $999, which makes a lot of sense, and that the Y50 will start at $999, which is also compliant with the specs it should start at.

I was reading the FAQ section on Lenovo's y50 product page. It is hilarious!! Guys go check it out.

We do apologize however we do not have this information available at this time. Please check back with the Lenovo website for updates or contact a local sales representative for more information.

Hey guys
I'm in the UK and I've been able to use this site for info on a laptop i'm hoping to get (y510p), particularly from 'jobine', the guy with the family guy avatar.
Anyway I thought I'd sign up so that I can post this piece of information I got from the UK Lenovo customer support team who provided info on the Y50 even though I wasn't asking them about it!
Quote from email:
'The Y50, is due to be launched in June/ Mid-summer. this will be an
amended model but all options will have the dual Graphics.
There will be no changes to the exisiting Y510p'
Hope this helps

It is not hilarious. It is very frustrating. Why would they even announce a product when they're clearly not ready for it. MSI announced ghost with freakin censored names on CES and they released it 2 months after. Razer announced a new Razer Blade and it was available for pre order the day after. freakin Toshiba announced a new laptop this week and it will be released next week. Even Aorus beats them in marketing. Lenovo is just full of promises.
Im giving them till 1st week of May. After that, i'll just settle for an Alienware or a 14 incher from sager. I don't even care, I'll have money anyway when the next big 14" gaming laptop comes. -
What dual graphics? We get dual graphics? Please don't put SLI on this....
-
*Pricing, availability and specifications subject to change.
-
Dual graphics is not SLI...
Dual graphics means iGPU & dGPU...aka switchable graphics -
alienware 14 is never a good option imo
-
I just need a laptop that is 14" (so that it doesnt have the stupid numpad) and is 1080p. Thickness doesnt bother me, so it's a good option for me.
-
What about Dell XPS 15, rMBP 15? They have no numberpad. But they are not gaming laptops.
-
If you don't need the full 14", then look at the Clevo W230SS. It is better in every way to the current alienware, but it is 13". It is also much cheaper for comparable specs. Additionally, outside of the U.S., it goes up to a 4x900p display.
-
Yes, I like that particular model. It is superior to alienware 14 in every way. The only thing keeping me for buying it is the build quality. It looks extremely cheap compared to the alienware 14.
-
But will we be able to drive two external displays with only one video port?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk -
i get your point. But this is the only reason I'm waiting for y50. And I really feel they would slot it in.
I want to put 2 HDD (HDD + SDD) in my lappy. If not, I'd buy y510p.
