That's interesting, because the Rep I just spoke with told me "i don't know if we will be selling that resolution in north america" "all of the documentation that i have for north america (at this time) says Full HD"
This has to be the worst refresh of a model ever, the Y510p is looking like the best gaming laptop you can buy right now.

I got a little more on the screens after just finishing up a chat with a Lenovo rep:
-All current models are indeed TN panels (which I believe has already been confirmed here), even the touch screens.
-They are all also antiglare glossy, not matte (both touch and non-touch). "They will all be a type of glossy display."
-I then asked about the 4K demo models used at CES, asking if they were IPS and have since been changed (because they had looked very impressive), but to my surprise the rep said they were actually also TN panels. If that's the case, I have to say they looked pretty good in the videos floating around youtube. Maybe these won't be so bad with TN after all..
Really hoping we get to see some kind of reviews soon.Banender likes this. -
This is what I'm hoping they will have.
Lenovo Y50 with
+ 4k Resolution
+ 16GB Ram
+ GTX 4GB Maxwell or Kepler, would prefer Maxwell
+ Touch Screen
+ What ever hard drive, I'll probably end up replacing it with a Samsung 840 Evo 500GB

I know people are annoyed that lenovo lied about the $999 starting price they stated at CES, so was I when I first saw the prices.
However, when they said this they also said OPTIONAL gtx 860m, touchscreen and backlight keyboard. So seeing as these all already come on the base model I can understand the $1299 starting price. -
The reps probably don't know what they are talking about, because they would have to make really impressive TN panels to make them have the extremely good viewing angles back in CES. As we know about Lenovo's cheapness, that's most unlikely to happen. Like I said, take their responses with a grain of salt -
I'm concerned you may be right regarding the CES panels.. Those CES panels also didn't have the plastic frames around the screens we're currently seeing in pics on the Lenovo site (CES models were flat with the edge-to-edge gloss). Really looks like we might have a bait and switch on our hands... -
On another note, the y510p SLI config on lenovo's site actually has a price of $1599 before the $400 dollar 'sale', which is more than the $1499 price of the base y50 before discount. So we just need to wait a bit for the discount on the y50 to increase, to get it for the price we want.

Lenovo just really screwed up this time. I assume they are aiming for an ultra light gaming notebook because they are seeing MSI and Razer making tons of money with their overpriced ultra-thin gaming machines? For those comparing y50 with gs60 or blade, note that both MSI and Razer have all aluminum finish, thinner and lighter form factor. They are both of GREAT build quality. And those saying that the gs60 has a bad build quality, sure maybe compared to gs70, but you got to admit it will be much better built than y50, which is cheap plastic. My y510p is easily bent.
I am not saying I don't love my y510p, but the Y series supposed to blow competitors out of the water with AFFORDABLE PRICES! The y510p and y410p even beat Clevo in terms of performance/price. The y50 on the other hand doesn't even have the performance/price of its predecessor! And those comparing the y50 to Apple, I can only laugh.
The 512gb ssd DOES NOT justify for y50's outrageous price! The mechanical hard drive can be easily swapped out without voiding the warranty, and ANYONE can do that after a few videos in youtube, its fun. I have a 500gb Samsung 840 evo inside my y510p which I'm sure is faster than whatever Lenovo provides. I got the 500gb 840 evo for 216 usd (240usd - 10% paypal discount).
Lenovo went with a relatively thin notebook this time, but it just isn't as thin or as beautifully as gs60 or blade with aluminum chassis, nor does it justify for its pricing. The y50's form factor is similar to that of the ge60, but more expensive. Lenovo, really disappointing. What happened to the great values for Y series gaming notebooks? Sure, you want to make it a "premium ultra thin and light gaming machine", but let's face it its cheaply built and we expect great prices! -
Second this, and Y50 is as heavy as those non-ultrathin laptops, GE60 has the same weight as Y50 , and it has optical drive with it.
-
No warranty options for the Y50??

If you look at the video of the CES y50 exactly at 14s
Hands On of the Lenovo Y50 - YouTube
you will notice that the upper part of the screen in no way turns black as to indicate it is TN
BUT thinking that everything you see in CES is definitive would be foolish. -
You are comparing a laptop that had just come out to laptops that are already existing in the market so Idk what to say. Instead of complaining things that you clearly don't even know enough about, why don't you just wait for the price to go down?CyberTronics, bva91, amraa_kaze and 2 others like this. -

Really disappointed with the pricing. Definitely picking up the Clevo W230SS over it. Was holding out to see the pricing on the Y50, but as is... they haven't even released pricing on the 4k display yet... 2rich4me.

When did Lenovo go live with the Y50 on sale? I just saw it's up now for $1,449 on the top-end package (before any custom selections).
Lenovo Y50 Laptop | 15.6" High-Performance Gaming Notebook PC | Lenovo (US)
The processor is Intel Core i7-4700HQ Processor (2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB) which is good given some of the speculation during the Y40 launch.
However, I still don't see a model with 4K listed...so I guess the launch is not yet complete. Could this mean details from the conversation with reps above is still not final with regard to TN vs IPS?

What are your opinions on the GIGABYTE P35G v2-CF2 vs the Y50?
-
If it had touch screen, I would of bought it in a heart beat. -
I'm quite concerned about the battery life on this thing. My y410p has a 72WH battery(hwinfo says 74wh), It seems foolish to put a tiny 54wh battery in this i7 4700hq + gtx 860m computer.

2. Either chip can be soldered or MXM. MXM is just the GPU and vram on a PCB with a standardized connector.
These rumors that got started where vram size and MXM placement or not to differentiate Maxwell and Kepler are simply false and mean nothing. -
But it's still unlikely that Lenovo will get GK104 chips when they have GM107 already, I'm just saying. Switching chips won't reduce cost -
-
Ships within 3-4 weeks?
Wasn't it "10-12 days" before? -
-
Yea that's what we talked pages ago, we just have to wait till the laptop is on Xotic or whatever. I bet the price will be very good.
Maybe the y50 is same like it but...we can't say anything yet.

Regarding the displays.... as someone mentioned before... the tn panels were really good in the y510p... and I was under the impression only sharp made the 4k panels right now.. and that's an ips ....

Graphics - Up to NVIDIA® GTX-860M 4GB (Maxwell)
This is from the Tech Specs (updated?). What do you think?
They also finally removed integrated optical drive from the features. -
errrrrmaaaaaahgeeeeeeeeeeeeehrd!!!!!
only thing left to test are the screens, if they seem good even though they are TN, then my mind is set
better yet, if the 4k screen is ips from sharp, then i'm definately getting it -
was just checking up on the differences between wireless-ac 3160 and 7260
Intel® Wireless Product Selection Guide
here it says that the 7260 has 2x2 Stream capabilities as opposed to 1x1 on the 3160. Anyone know what this really means in terms of how it can affect gaming? -
make that $1,499 touchscreen and i'm getting one! haha!
-
still don't get it

i'm still waiting for someone to post a review of the unit.
I hope that CES Prototype's got a TN Panel too. cause if that's the case, we wouldn't have much problems with the viewing angle. -

What as of now would be the biggest regrets of buying the base model when looking at it in about 3-4 months later?
From what i read the
1: few/confusing details so it's kind of a blind buy, and
2: 4K screen is lost,
3: 2GB version of the Maxwell card.
4: 3-4 Weeks wait time
If these are not an issue would this be a good buy or should everyone hold off for now? Especially since the price difference for 4k is unknown.
Also this or the N550JK? -
Anyone know how these are for video editing? Nothing too intensive, I have a beast PC desktop for editing purposes, but I'm looking for offline/onsite editing or being with a client showing roughs. The $1299 Y50 model looks pretty good.
Also how's the resale value on these Lenovo Y series? I had a 2010 13" Macbook Pro that sold in minutes, but my current Alienware m18x r2 has been up for sale for over a month... I know can't really compare since there's a price difference.
Thanks -
I still can't decide between GIGABYTE P35Gv2-CF2 and Y50.. halp!
