Anybody know when Lenovo has Summer Sales? I want at least a $300+ discount on a FHD Touch Screen, 16GB version.
-
I ordered a Y50 today. I got the 8GB touch model so I won't be learning anything new about it. But the rep in spoke to said its in 2x4GB sticks, and that the 4GB vram models are Maxwell because Kepler isn't out yet. Take that how you will. This model will be perfect for me, I'll just upgrade to an SSD later.
-
@Medlock87: can we expect a little review from you when you receive it?

Why would Kepler be not out yet? Maxwell is the new chip and not the other way around. At this point I dont think we can trust any of the reps on their replies on more advanced questions like panel type or chip type considering the wide range of replies. -
Oh btw guys I also remembered that samsung doesn't have IPS technology so theirs has to be TN...
-
I'm trying to pick between the y50 $1450 one (just confirming that is not a touch display right? If i were to wait for a touch display how long would it take?)) and the new msi ghost gs60 3k for $2000. Which one do you guys recommend (cost isn't that big of an issue). My current laptops are a macbook air and an asus k53ta.

Samsung has PLS which is essentially the same as IPS

Can anyone explain me why IPS/Viewing Angles is a a soooooo critical matter for this laptop to even be a main reason to buy or a deal breaker for some people if not present? I had the Y500 (FHD, glossy) and currently have the Y510p (FHD, Matte) and for my eyes the screen is amazing, very bright, sharp and intense colors, and I dont think the Y50 will have less than that even if is not an IPS screen. And the view angles? whats the deal with that? (
) 99% of time I see my laptop screen from front, I dont get why I need to stress so much on how it looks from the sides and such... (sorry for my dumb questions. I honestly dont get it).
For the Y50 I would like to get 1080p, non touch, 8-16GB RAM, Hybrid Storage would be ok and a price around $1100.
I got my y510p with 16GB RAM, SSHD (1TB + 8GB Cache), Anti Glare FHD and 750M SLI on 2013 Black Friday for mere $999 on Amazon, and I remember when the Y510p was new the price for SLI model was $1,299 for many months, then it started to get lower.hfm and Sacarianos like this. -
Amazon currently has a sale on the WD Black2 drive (120 GB SSD and 1 TB HDD in a single 2.5" chassis). $189.99 with free shipping.
Seems like a great option for this Y50 that doesn't have any other mSATA or other slots for separate storage options.Medlock87 likes this. -

Anyone know when XoticPC will add the Y50 or how long they usually add new laptops after a release???
-
Should be comparing the upcoming 4k y50 with the upcoming ghost pro 3k.
And the already released FHD y50 with the already released gs60 ghost (non pro.)
the FHD gs60 comes with an excellent ips panel, is thinner, is lighter, has more storage options. However it comes with Kepler GPU, track pad issues, and cost more.
Need to decided if the extra $$ is worth it.
Also, i have a thread trying to help me decide between the gs60, razer blade 14, and y50 here http://forum.notebookreview.com/wha...60-v-razer-blade-14-v-lenovo-y50-v-other.html -

As Alias said, TN is 6-bit, where the 8-bit color is just interpolated. On top of that, Notebookcheck reports that the TN used in the z510 (which the Y50 hardware manual claims to be the same) measured only 48% over the Adobe RGB color gamut.
Graphics designers, web designers, and other creative professionals (and amateurs) can't work effectively with such a poor contrast screen, and yes, they want to be able to work portably without having to lug around an external display. Even looking straight at the screen, the tones are inconsistent across the screen. Just fill your screen with a solid color and look at it straight on. A TN panel as bad as the one in the notebookcheck's z510 review unit would have some pretty bad gradient illusion and/or vignetting.
Even if you could care less about color reproduction, contrast, and consistency, such a TN panel would create big limitations. What if you wanted to watch a movie, a youtube video, or tv show with a friend in a hotel or airplane or something. The viewing experience is either acceptable for one and abysmal for the other, or crappy for both. I've helped a lot of people out with projects or problems on their laptops, and oh my goodness when they have a low quality TN (like the notebookcheck z510 review unit), it becomes a challenge to see what they are doing, unless I'm putting my face near their shoulder.
It's one of those things where once you use the alternative (e.g. S-IPS, H-IPS, etc) for long enough time, you can't go back. You get used to seeing more colors, and having better contrast. You wonder how you ever tolerated it as long as you did.
Now that I've briefly explained why IPS is kind of a big deal, going along the same vein of "diff'rent strokes, diff'rent folks", explain to me how you, and others like you, feel as impelled as you do to upgrade to a laptop with the same screen, same processor, and comparable GPU power as the one you already own? If you have the money to upgrade for ~$1100 every year, why don't you save the money, wait 50% longer, and get a computer that is 50% more expensive but with things like 4k screen, and much better components?Alias, LanceAvion, BlazeHN and 2 others like this. -
I have an 2560x1440 IPS monitor at home. After looking at the inky black and the popping colors (my personal favorite is the green of grass on an IPS) you can never use another TN panel. Its just something you notice one you see it. -

Review of the 1080p version ... check out the viewing angleslot of photos
EDIT : Looks like hes summarized the version of the review some had already posted above... !ChowMeow likes this. -
Google translated that review...oh my what a huge letdown -
And about why I upgrade, I keep good care of my laptop for 1 year, then I sell it on a very good price (while still high end stuff on my country) and then add a very little amount of money to upgrade again, it was a very big upgrade from my Y500 (very basic model) to my maxed specs Y510p. About the Y50 I'm just doing my research, but by far I think i'll pass this year upgrade, dont feel it necesary, maybe next year one. -
Anyone know when the y50 models will be released out of the US? More specifically Canada? Been following this thread for a while and I have learned a lot that convinced me in buying this laptop.
-
Are you referring to the viewing angles?
Coz viewing angles compared in that review wasnt helpful at allat such extreme angles i doubt any laptop will look good right?
-
I used to think I was fine with a usual TN display. But after reading all these posts, I think IPS is the way to go!

In this review he also listed the laptop to have an i5, which is weird because there are no i5 models? -
If anything, maybe a few pictures with some impressions. If there's still need for it by then.
I've been lurking in this thread for the last hundred pages. Lots of great information here, and (usually) great community! -

even if you are not a designer or something ips screen is the way to go
sometimes i just lean back a bit on my chair and with a TN screen the whole upper 3rd of the screen gets dark which pisses me off so hard
you cant even differentiate between like dark brown and black for example when trying to buy a wallet or something -
There were some rumors in Chinese websites about a Y430p featuring GTX 850m to be on sale bundled with Guild War 2 China server on 15th may. No idea if it is true, or might just be a "Y410p" with upgraded hardware.

i found a hate on the ASUS N550JV (notice it's the older one with the GT750 gpu not the new ASUS N550JK)
unfortunately it's on german but it basically says that the speakers suck (bad positioning of the speakers)
and that the supplied external subwoofer is just a marketing gimmick and that it's not really the best
The new ASUS with 850m has the same design as far as speaker solution is concerned.
Just sayin this cuz some people had it on their priority list.
And if you were considering the G550JK same story. Just look at the pic

I guess this means if the Y50 ships with a retarded TN display if you play a game where your team is brown and the other team is black, you'd had no idea who you are shooting at
I can see game play becoming really interesting on a Y50 if the screen is TN...

Is the Toshiba 4K laptop's display TN or IPS? Wouldn't the Y50 display be sourced from the same manufacturer?
-
Okay so the Toshiba P50T with the 4K display actually has an IPS screen. I just researched and found the following press release confirming that the display will be IPS:
http://www.toshiba.com/us/press-release/101046
With all the recent discussions about display quality, I am completely sold on getting a 4K display with IPS. In fac tI now fully understand the difference between IPS and TN and will never buy another TN display, especially for a price premium.
So if the Y50 display is not IPS I might as well buy the Toshiba now... But if it is IPS I will wait up to a month... Are we still not sure of the Y50 4K display is IPS or not?
