let's hope HP will do something less stupid and make their marketing goals for envy and inspiron series a bit more realistic and dell better not fk their new upcoming gaming series up when it comes out because these will have heavier impacts on lenovo. although we see gigabyte, msi, asus and even razer as competitors for y50, lenovo probably focuses more the biggies like hp and dell. if these two can be a little competitive in this area w/o the whole alienware bs, then we can really see some discounts for the y series

I don't necessarily disagree. Now that they're starting to get their offerings and prices out, the picture's not looking all that bad. It's really just been the unforthcomingness of the information. That part is the part that to me is really unforgiveable. They've been talking about this machine for at least 5 months, and even up to now, all the specs and information are not fully released or confirmed. That's the part that really irks me. But otherwise, it seems to be a good deal... provided we ever find out how much the 4K version will cost, and once we can confirm how poor or decent the screen is.

yeah ik, dell has literally nothing to lead the market. when gaming laptops were the trend, dell bought alienware and screws their reputation up. when ultrabooks became popular, dell started doing it and made ultrabooks look like crap, only to make macbooks look even better. the only thing dell has some dominating power in is workstations, which has quite small market shares.

ok if you have known lenovo you will probably get used to that. their after sale customer service has some good reputations but their sales reps are just some indians that know even less about computers than some newbies here. when newer models of y510p were available on Amazon in the beginning of this year, their reps can't even find any info on those models as they said they don't know anything that's not on their website. so yeah, it's not something to be aggressively mad about, it's been like this before.

listen man sales reps are sales reps regardless of them being from india, china, europe or america.
if you expect gamer/enthusiast level info from reps........hahaha
I've learnt to be pragmatic. when dealing with them, coz even before i've picked up the phone i know its mostly pointless. better check here instead.....
well anyways just dont be dishin indians in particular. all right man??

lol im not gonna defend indian BPOs just coz im from there.. if the Service is bad... its bad... :)
While the general trend is to link India to BPO services... its not the only thing we do :D

Also i think the details they are expected to know are more streamlined to general customer queries and nothing as specific as discussed here..

I was hoping to find out the SSD model from the Hardware maintanance manuals... but they've only listed the 1TB HDD and the 1TB HDD+8GB SSHD! .... no ssd model details :(
But interestingly there were 500gb hardisks and the Tech specs did say upto 1TB.. wondering if there lower models than the $1149

i wish some more details were out so there would be something to discuss !

EDIT: For those who were comparing the Asus N550jk to the Y50 a review of the N550jk by xoticpc is out ! :)

    GUYS!

Don't know if anyone has spotted this yet but if you pause this video of the y50 from CES at 0:31 you can see it say geforce gtx 860m for y50/y70... Biggest hint yet for a 17 inch version?

Again, since I am not too familiar with video memory, we know that 860m will be on par or close to the performance of the SLI gt755m in the y510p, but are we talking about the maxwell variant at 2gb or the kepler at 4gb? Since the SLI in 510p would have 4gb vram.

I am not 100% sure but the 4GB version should be Maxwell.

As people have stated before, the amount of video memory will matter if you are playing at higher resolutions or a heavily modded Bethesda game. 2GB should be fine for 1080p.

That's good to hear, but how would a 2gb 860m compare to the 755 sli from y510p, I play a lot of battlefield 4 so was wondering if 510p sli would be a better buy right now especially at the low price.

You forget that with the new consoles out, new games will start using more video memory out of the box than we have been used to for many years.

It's not just a question of 1080p, it's also how detailed the textures of the game are. I will go for a 4GB version if I can.

It really shows off the problems of having a glossy screen.. I wish they would offer a matte version. Also, the design of the laptop is.. well, it's not as ugly as the MSI laptops, but it still has a bit of that "80's sci-fi movie" to it. Would be nice if they just skipped that and played it straight and sleek.

Still waiting to see final specs and prices here in North Europe, but if I buy the Y50 it will be in spite of the physical design.

Using it would be like making love to a girl with a quite nice body but needing to put a paper bag over her head.

    Just my personal opinion :)

That's bizarre if you think about it. Glossy screens look horrible with fingerprints on them. So let's make sure all the touch screens are glossy?

I realize this, but is this the 2gb maxwell 860m or the 4gb kepler one? I am interested in the 2 gb maxwell 860m vs the gt755 sli.

That's true. Buying the 2GB or 4GB version will ultimately depend on the budget. I can only go for the lowest 2GB model.

Good thing there are choices :D

I wish Lenovo didnt design the back with those fake vents....feels gimmicky :(
I would've preferred matte over the brushed aluminium... but other than that i think it looks good :D
The red and black combo is great :D

Yup the G550jk looks great too :)
Wish it had an 860m , and im sure Asus will charge higher coz it has the ROG symbol...

This is the 2gb maxwell version...

The 2gb maxwell is actually 10% faster than the Kepler version... the Ram wont affect performance unless you're gonna do some really taxing graphic oriented stuff as mentioned above...2gb is more than enough :)

It's been said at least 10 times in this thread already. 2gb maxwell 860m will be about the same as gt755 sli (depends on which game, but should be very similar). But it will be cooler and wont have any "problems" that sli has. I would absolutely choose 860m (2gb or 4gb) over 755m sli. Besides, new (upcoming) games will probably use maxwell technology better than keppler.

So the 4gb kepler isn't really much of an upgrade over the 2gb maxwell? Is there any confirmation that the 4gb will be kepler or maxwell? Or are we still hopeful for a 4gb maxwell?

Due the price difference, I would probably opt for the 2 gb vram, especially if the 4gb version is kepler.

Some say it is keppler, some say it is haswell, the truth is, nobody knows for sure. So until there are some reviews to see, you cant be sure of anything.

Interesting website you found there! According to the website (using Google Translate),
    • "The reverse side contains only fancy ribbing that goes from the speaker grilles." indicates that the two rear vents are not actually for the fans but just gimmicky?
    • "The graphics card has its own memory 4 GB GDDR5 connected via a 128-bit bus, and at a frequency of 5000 MHz data transfer rate reaches up to 80 GB / s" and also the GPU-Z screenshot showed that the GPU is a 4GB GDDR5 MAXWELL.

Wonder how will the fans work actually...

The 4GB version IS maxwell (btw its kepler and maxwell, haswell is the current CPU architecture of Intel), you can see a GPU-Z image of the 4GB maxwell in the aforementioned review:

Lenovo Y50-70 Touch: prvnà pohled, video | Lenovo Blog CZ

See how the image says 640 shaders? the kepler 860m has 1152 shaders, the maxwell 860m has 640 shaders ergo Y50 has maxwell case closed.

    EDIT: 1 minute late

Ha ha... Lol Googled y50 > search tool > time > last 24 hrs

Yea I was really hoping the rear things were actually vents....

Though he could've also meant that there are no ports and there is only fancy ribbing (for the vents).... But I think that's just being too hopeful lol

Very interesting find, a few things that surprised me

All the MSI reps in the video at CES said it was aluminum. While this is not a deal breaker it is kind of a let down. At least its good to know that it sounds well built. It seems that just the cover and bottom are aluminum.

Very interesting. Thought for sure that was a speaker. I'm glad though. I will probably never used the built in speakers.

Seems that all models will have the i7

Just my luck. The thing im most concerned about was translated the worse.... BUT, it sounds like you can hear the fans while idle... Anyone knows Czech?

I think he meant that there is a grill of cooling next to the sub woofer....
Edit : Actually you're right I think it's just cooling and no sub woofer...

And that's a pre production model.. Most people did say the lid and the bottom are aluminium.... And the keyboard was a soft touch finish metal... We can still hope for some aluminium :)

I'm not sure what he said about the cooling part at all... Was a mess lol

Vertically upward I guess, no idea. Probably a bit like Macbook's. Many people in a Chinese Y50 discussion board were discussing when the photo of the internal parts was leaked and were saying the same as well (as in the location of exhaust vents).

Last generations were plastic and this one won't be different, only the cover is made from aluminum.

Ad to LenovoBlog.cz article: They didn't tell anything surprisingly new thanks to them we know some informations now and they told on Twitter that they post some game tests in a few days (hope so)! Rear "subwoofer" is grill with additional cooling system and noise is very good when office and internet browsing but it can be loud when it's under full load (just don't know how many decibels).

Sorry for my English, I'm Czech :)
