Who says that 850m is worse than 750m? The 850 gddr5 is very close to the 860m gddr5, and the ddr3 is at the same level of a 765m, it crushes the 750m

$1329.99 before or after tax? I got hit with almost $100 tax! (USA buyer)
-
I think ill pull the trigger with the 1399 model with 512 SSD. Do you guys recommend adding the extra warranty now or would it be better to do it later with a rep?
-
The amazon link is not sold by amazon actually but still a good price nevertheless

Anyone got a delivery date from UPS yet?
How long did it take between them creating the label and posting the actual delivery date?
Also once UPS posted their delivery date was it more or less time than Lenovo had estimated with their delivery date. -
35% difference is "very close?" Jesus people need to stop overlooking the difference between the 850m and 860m. And I have yet to find a model with an 850m that is Gddr5

I was looking at the model that was put on amazon for 1099 and says ships in 6-10 from a third party vendor, and that made me super confused because how is that possibly if people on here say that they haven't even got theirs yet. Could this be reliable or would it just be better to order off lenovo for 1150 and wait the 3-4 weeks it says?
-
I ordered mine, says 1-3 days to ship. We'll see.
-
Did you order from amazon by any chance?
If so, did it say shipping location? -
There were some posts saying that some pages back.

For me the current y50 would have been perfect if it had an msata slot...that's the main deterrant right there.
In my country the laptop resale market is non-existant so that's another reason to wait.
And the last reason....I have so much on my plate right now atleast until spring next year that I don't really need it.... come spring though I'll be jonesin' for a new rig.

Hey guys, I would like to share a good(probably) news for you.
The hmm.pdf shows us that the 4k version of Y50 will use a LCD panel named "SDC LTN156FL02-L01 UHD G S LED1 NB LCD"
Then I got something from google(search "LTN156" and find a database):
LTN stands for SCREENS FOR NOTEBOOK! NOT TN panel!
156 stands for 15.6 inch
F stands for 2160p, but I am not sure about that. But it seems like that A for 768p, H for 1080p.
Well, the most important thing: as far as i am concerned, all of the TN panel use T after the resulution code. And most of the samsung panels which has L after the resolution code is PLS PANEL!Sandbag, bva91, ChowMeow and 1 other person like this. -
Can you post a link to where you found that info? I've googled this before and haven't found anywhere that says LTN stands for Screens For Notebook. And while the first letter after 156 does seem to indicate the resolution, I haven't found anywhere that indicates an L in the next place means PLS.
-
Is there any reviews on this laptop yet?
-
if you would read at least 1 last page before posting you would know the answer...H01D3N likes this.

Global Panel Exchange Center - Panelook.com
a database of panels
btw, LTN may not only for notebook, but at least not for TN panel. For example, a panel named LTN101AL01-701 is base on PLS while the panel named LTM230HT10 is base on TN.
hope that you can dig out more -
35% is between 850m ddr3 and 860m, i was talking 850m gddr5 vs 860m, the diference bewtween those two is only about 10%
-
Why even post this if you can't give a straight answer! C'mon man!
I've been waiting for reviews for this for a while too!hfm likes this. -
Chill dude, read the forum before posting. Everyone wants reviews, you have to wait for reviews, and when we get our Y50's, we will post info.
-
No problems from me pal, we just have enough snarky posts with no need to fill this thread with more.
A simple better answer would be " it hasn't been released yet" . Not everyone wants to read almost 300 pages to get a simple answer. I know that but some new members don't and everyone that's interested in this laptop isn't always up do date with tech/laptop news.
That's all , peace brotha!

When I look at the different models on Lenovo's website it doesn't say touchscreen on any of them so are none of them touch? I swear when I looked before some were listed as touch. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am confused.
-
Well the only model so far that I've found is the ge60 apache that has the gddr5 850m, and the apache is overall not a high quality laptop based numerous sources. People seem to be caught up on the n550jk and g550jk, which have the ddr3 versions, and hence a 35% performance drop in graphics performance compared to y50

Hi folks, been lurking for a while now.
I wanted to confirm this so I contacted Lenovo Canada over their chat support service. Was talking to a sales rep. I showed this post. He then took about >5 minutes to get back to me and said that, "It comes with the normal keyboard".
I'm confused.
txpro, I'm curious as to where you got your info?
As an aside, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, I believe the Y510p for Canada came with a bilingual keyboard. -
I contacted lenovo canada online chat support and asked "Does the y50 come with a bilingual keyboard?" She replied "Yes"
I remember the y500 came with a bilingual one, which is why I returned it.
Ask them what a "normal" keyboard is -
So I just finished chatting with a rep, and as we know by now, these answers should be taken with a grain of salt, but here's what I was told:
-SSD options will only be sold with Non-Touch models.
-Surprised reading here that the warranty would be voided if you swap in your own SSD, so I asked about that and the rep confirmed doing so would indeed void the warranty.
-4K models will arrive "by next month" and will also offer touch.
-Display panel on 4K will be TN. -
thx for the infos...
something tells me i don't care anymore about ips... one of the things that did sink in to me was the fact that TN has better refresh rates for gaming which is a world for first-person shooters etc. etc. etc. anything that requires a quick reaction... pretty much almost all games
REALLY the ONLY thing left now is to FINALLY get some first-hand god-damn reviews! If the TN panel happens to be actually not so bad then i am sold! (there are apparently different quality TN panels, for instance i have an acer aspire 14" intel hd 3000 laptop and the screen is so disgusting on a slightest angle change... whereas the y510p's turned out to have pretty satisfying tn panels according to numerous reviews)
As for 4k... i don't even think a review will be enough. We would need to see it live and decide if it's worth getting. Anyhow 2014 is truly a transition-year... not just by the DDR4 ram, broadwell cpu's and 20 nm maxwells but also 4k resolutions with limited usage (almost no media/software for it atm) and trial-error hardware. If you can afford to wait 1 more year you should do it... -
how many more times do we have to tell you that the of majority of w.e. the rep said about the specs is just BS?
-
At least once, maybe twice please.
I decided to ask a few questions and figured why not share my answers disclaiming from the beginning to take them with a grain of salt... Regardless, I thought it might be worth throwing out there for the sake of discussion anyway while we await more info and reviews.. And maybe, just maybe, this guy happened to know what he was talking about. Before the Y50 dropped, reps were insisting the FHD panels would be TN, and it looks as though that held true. A chance that could be the same with 4K displays, no? -
God, everyone on here is getting so worked up about this! Seriously though, the guy was just offering up what he found out from the reps. If you think about it how many times have the reps been explicitly wrong? Most of their answers are "we do not yet have that information" anyway, they don't often give us wrong answers. And at this point, Lenovo is pretty much throwing stuff out there as they go. I wouldn't be surprised if the touch models only have SSD, as most "gamers" looking for SSD would not buy a touch screen laptop (Disclaimer: I said MOST). TN is cheap; Lenovo is cheap. Not surprising if 4K is TN. And yeah I can personally confirm that the warranty will be voided from personal experience. With some companies, even adding RAM will void your warranty. I know that this is the case with Acer.
-
Likewise the reps also told you the 4gb gpu is kepler. they said the FHD panels are TN because the early models are actually released. if you read a few posts earlier we were just decoding the model number for the 4k panel and you think reps can be more right than the model number? at this point what the reps said is just pointless, the only thing we can do is wait for the actual release of the 4k ones.
wrong answers? kepler gpu, internal optical drive and SLI y50 (that was the most hilarious out of all). the problem you are forgetting is that it doesn't matter if lenovo is cheap or not, there is only a limited number of brands that manufacture 4k displays and so far we haven't heard any that uses TN panel for 15.6". even if you bring up cost, samsung claims that their PLS panels will be cheaper to manufacture than IPS panels -
Ordered my y50 two days ago. I chose the non touch model that had the "web price" of 1799 but after instant savings was 1,409
-4th Generation Intel Core i7-4710HQ Processor (2.50GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
-NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 4GB
-16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
-512GB SSD
Im very excited.

Either you don't know what the phrase "take it with a grain of salt" means, or you just prefer argument for the sake of argument. By using that phrase, I clearly acknowledged and warned that what the rep said could turn out to be doody...
Secondly, reps claimed the currently released models would be TN BEFORE they were released.
And thirdly, I've been following this thread since page 1, and saw those very posts you were referring to with the model numbers. Again, I tossed my post into the ring to further add to the DISCUSSION, not claiming one item to be true or false, while we wait for said releases...
How about instead of wasting your time going out of your way to scold people for posts YOU happen to consider nonsense, you pass them over and leave them for those who find them worthy of their time (as those people already appear to exist)?BlazeHN, bva91, H01D3N and 1 other person like this. -
So I am upgrading from school's W530 to something I can play games on more than everything low and having low frames all the time. Money is not a big issue, but is the 1800 web price one worth it if I can get it for 1400? I will do absolute minimum of video editing.
It's either 1100 for the basic one or the best one, because the memory and graphics upgrades are "worth" 200 and ssd 100. I will throw extra 100 for ssd but not sure about the 200 for something I will probably use maybe once. I know I can buy separate SSD and change it, if it will be possible but I have no experience with it.
Thoughts? -
if you have followed this post since page 1, then you should have saw countless posts discussing the panel and countless "what the rep said" posts. there's no point of adding an extra one and instead of posting unreliable info, you might as well just wait. I've seen too many people that gave up on this model because apparently they asked the reps and "learned" the it will be a TN 4k panel. please guys, let's get over with "what the reps said"
PS: I use "take it with a grain of salt" the most frequently in this thread so if you have read through all 290~ pages, you should know whether I know what it means or not.
If you know how to swap out the hard drive and don't do much photo/video editing or play game mods, chances are you'll never need that extra vram and the manufacture's ssd.
the extra 8gb of ram...? well indeed DDR3L ram is on the expensive side and for future proof having more than 8gb is reasonable, but 16gb is a bit of an overkill and the other stuff that comes with it jacks up the cost too much, so I would say it's not worth it. the best options as of now would be the basic model of the touch/non-touch depending on personal preference. the upgrades don't make much sense for the FHD models -
Ordered my laptop on the 16th (item # 59421845). A base with an upgraded processor. At that time it was one of the only items that was, "ships in 10-12 days". Three days later my expected ship date changed from May 30th to June 30th. Just checked the model on the website, it says "Ships within 3 weeks". Kind of funny, my expected ship date is past Lenovo's current advertised date. My question is do you really think I will have to wait until June 30th? Never dealt with Lenovo. Is this common practice? Thinking of throwing in the towel and ordering the Gigabyte G35 V2 instead. More expensive but it sure seems like a good alternative. Thoughts?

This is the last bit of thread space I'm going to waste on this argument: You've clearly had enough of the "rep" posts. That's all well and good. I chose to contribute another with what I don't believe was covered here "rep-wise" in the Touch/SSD discussion. People here have voiced they'd like to see that option, and I personally would as well, so I thought, hey, why not.
Since I already had the rep's ear, I chose to add the other questions and figured why not share them here as well (oh, the horror!). As far as the 4K panel goes, we won't know what it will be until it's dropped, so as far as I'm concerned, a rep asserting it will be TN even if he turns out to be wrong (oh no!), is fair game here. I won't be looking to drop an 'I told you so' if he's right, in fact, I hope he's wrong... Feel free to drop a post rubbing my face in it if it doesn't end up TN if that makes you happy.
If I was here preaching the rep's word is gospel saying "the dream is over, we'll never see IPS or an SSD in a touch model," which I'm clearly not, I would completely understand your gripes. And to expect anyone to associate every post to their posters and keep a running tab on who said what, well that's just ridiculous - though I am glad you know the definition of the phrase despite your choice to ignore my use of it. While I have read through the entire thread (and passed over the lot that I didn't find interesting or of particular value...), I couldn't really tell you who said what on any of them without looking back ..until this happened....
Anyway, if you'd like to beat the dead horse any further feel free to PM me and we can hash it out there. I'm just trying to contribute to the thread with items that may prove interesting/helpful to some here and appreciate the same efforts from others. This time it didn't help you - sorry for that. I just think our time is better spent discussing or ignoring rather than playing Post Police. Don't we have mods for that anyway? -
We haven't gotten our Y50's yet. There is actually a 50% chance that we will get Kepler, think about it. According to your logic, the reps are "absolutely wrong." Since reps told me that the GPUs are all Maxwell, and they MUST be wrong, it's only logical that I would get a Kepler card, right? And as I said before, I talked to 4 different online chat reps and 2 official email reps and all of them told me that the optical drive was external. SLI Y50? Probably an updated SLI Y510p. They aren't wrong; they just made the mistake between Y510p and Y50. Updated SLI models have been released in other countries. China even has an Erazer Y510p model. I think it will be called the Y530p now or something, at least that's what I've heard. Yeah, Samsung can make the panels cheaper. That doesn't mean that they will sell the tech to other companies for cheaper. I still wouldn't be surprised if it is TN. You even said that there are limited companies that make the 4K displays. Basically that killed your reasoning, because that means that Lenovo is even more likely to use TN.
-
Yeah well, have fun being reported heibk201. This is a freaking thread about the Y50. All information is accepted here. If you think that you can do a better job managing this thread, go and start some own on another site. If you aren't going to deal with other peoples' opinions, just leave. Thanks.
-
Good choice on the model, that's actually the best deal I think. I don't actually think that you will have to wait that long, lots of people have had their shipping times improving. Personally, I would definitely go for the Lenovo Y50 over the G35. I don't know about you, but Lenovo, being a big name company, has a lot better options for servicing parts if anything goes wrong. Plus, Lenovo has world-class customer service (personal experience). If you can wait a couple of weeks, I would definitely stick with the Y50.
-
I ordered mine on 5/2, within a week of it being available *I think.* The website said "ships in 10-12 days," meanwhile my order status page showed that it'd ship 5/22. It's the 24th now and not only has it NOT shipped, it's been delayed for another whole month. My order status page now shows an expected ship date of 6/23. I received this email a few days ago from Lenovo explaining themselves..
Just wanted to make sure this is known for the people expecting quick shipping times: It's taking them two months to get my laptop to me. So, you know...don't get your hopes up. -
Placed my order on the base model 5/8 and it was shipped out on 5/24
Lenovo estimated delivery date is 6/2.
UPS label has been created but has not updated with a firm delivery date yet. I'm guessing it won't be updated until Monday and I'm hoping for some luck on receiving it on 5/30. (Friday instead of Monday)
There was someone here that said theirs shipped out 5/22 and that they'd post some pics/review/youtube video.
I'm thinking this will happen before the end of the month. -
Was about to pull the trigger yesterday but I think I will wait till at least one review comes out confirming all the speculation.

Hello I am in high school and have been saving up for a good gaming computer and I have been researching the Y510p for months and was wondering what yall think if it is worth saving up more for a Y50 or Y40 or if i should just get a 510. And also I was wondering if you all know why the Y40 doesnt have nvidida graphics and if those graphics are worth it.
-
Just got an email from Amazon saying my order has shipped. One step closer to it being here by 2 Jun.

Seeing as you are in high school, you probably want something that has a good battery life and is portable. The y510p doesn't really match those criteria.
The Y40 is being marketed more as a portable notebook (albeit one with pretty good gaming capabilities), and this is probably why it has worse graphics. The Y50 is being marketed as more of a serious gaming machine.
However, in the end it all depends on your preferences. You can look up some benchmarks of the Y40's graphics card. If you think its good enough for the games you want to play, I would say go for it. Just be aware that it probably won't run upcoming games (WatchDogs, GTAV etc.) at the highest graphics settings at 1080p, and also has worse cooling than the Y50.
Basically, if you have the extra money, I wouldn't go for the 510p. After that it depends on your preferences. -
So I've been following this thread for a pretty long time, and as I read, I got sure that the 4GB version would be Maxwell.
Now there was a kerfuffle a few pages back about it being Kepler, and now I'm scared again. Is there any definitive proof that it will be Maxwell or Kepler at this point or is it all just Lenovo reps.
Oh and will it really matter that much if its Kepler (in terms of performance, I know power usage and heat output will be higher).
EDIT:
Anyone who has this question go here:
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50/#techspecs
It says that the graphics card is Maxwell. -
At the beginning there was a rumor that the 4GB version was Kepler. People started bombarding the chat reps with that question, and within a few days, the Lenovo site was changed to specifically state that both the 2GB and 4GB models would be Maxwell. To me, that was enough proof that they would both be Maxwell.
