Hello.. I just registered to the site because I have been lurking this thread for a bit.. The reason is that I bought a Y50 model.. It was the version with the DVD/Blu ray and 4 GB 860m.. I'm not sure when it will actually ship but I was told by a rep that would be 6/11.. Now on my ordering page it has what I assume is the dreaded bugged 10/13 shipping date that can't be true. I'm still concerned about two things.. Mainly with my particular version.. I'm hoping my particular model with the optical drive isn't bulkier than the other versions as many people in this threads suspects it has to be external.. With that, I kind of regret not just going for the cheapest model as I thought the chassis could support some kind of slot loading optical drive similar to other small laptops on the market like various MacBook Airs.. Anyways I will still be lurking for the most part, but I really hope I get my laptop shipped soon..

Nope. It says on the Lenovo website that it will be Maxwell.

A mistake is something wrong isn't it? THey are still wrong for mixing things up.
How does a limited number of companies manufacturing 4k kill my argument? If no one makes TN 4k panels in 15.6" then how is Lenovo gonna use it? If samsung wants to stay in the market then they'll be competitive with their price, that's common sense.

I'm just saying people should get over this "what the rep said" thing. I'm still faraway from getting banned if that disappoints you, at least not before jinx :p

You should check w/ customer service for dates or if you want to cancel the order since the base model is now on amazon w/ cheaper price and more reliable shipping time

I did chat with a rep and he said it would ship on the 11th of Jun which is much better than the date listed obviously.. Is the Amazing listing separate? It says directly from lenovo's website/store when I checked..

You may be the one of the first people to get their laptop on this forum!

I can't believe there is not even a single professional review of this laptop out there. Don't companies usually send out review samples before actually releasing the actual product?

Guys for the Blu-Ray model on the website it says an integrated drive, now correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that mean that the optical drive will be an internal feature not an external one?

Yes, it should mean that the optical drive is internal, but from the pictures we've seen of the internals there just isn't enough space.

This is more of a general lenovo question, rather than one concerning the y50 specifically but I still remember the time when one could configure a machine on their website (mostly because it was not so long ago..). Is that trend gone?

I'm okay with the i7-4710/860m 2gb version of the y50.. but if I could get an i5 in there instead and save some $ that would be nice..

I was actually not being sarcastic. I share your frustration, as I have voiced a rant post a few days ago about this issue.

As far as your question goes I've always thought review companies get one before consumers but it doesn't seem to be the case this time.

I'm supposed to get mine on 6/2 the latest and I seem to be one of the first people to be receiving a y50.

Maybe there will be a professional review out a few days prior?

At this point I doubt it but we can hope.

So, I'm quite desperately searching for reviews of the Y50, and I ended up on taobao looking at comments.
    And I found this : T2im7fXNFXXXXXXXXX_!!496873953-0-rate.jpg
Oh. My. God. Why did they have to do this to a perfectly fine black laptop? :(

Anyway, looking through some photos of the screen, it doesn't look that bad ( I'm used to an old acer 1366x768 so my standards are pretty low)

    Link (chinese I think) : °üÍêÃÀÆÁLenovo/ÁªÏë Erazer Y50-70AM -IFI 2G¶ÀÏÔ ¸ß·ÖÆÁ ÏÖ»õ-ÌÔ±¦Íø
I can't get google translate to show the comments, but chrome translates them.

    Here Y50ÒѾÈëÊÖ(¸üÐÂͼƬºÍ²¿·Ö¼òµ¥µÄÅÜ·Ö)_ÁªÏëY40¡¢Y50ÂÛ̳ it says
"Added, ran 3DMARK forget screenshots. P points 4800 points. Did not run X minutes, because I did not pursue the extreme.
Master Lu finish 3D temperature display CPU 71 GPU 73." (google translate) , how is this temperature?

    Here ¡¾ÂÛ̳ÍƼö¾ÏúÉÌ-ÌìÇ綫·½¡¿ÁªÏë¹úÐÐY40¡¢Y50¼Û¸ñ×ßÊÆ 2014Äê5ÔÂ16ºÅ¸üРËÍ1ÄêÑÓ±£_ÁªÏëY40¡¢Y50ÂÛ̳ 8799 Yuan for the 4k version, which is about 1400$ ?

If anyone that understands chinese would like to dig up some more infos, here's a link to the forum ÁªÏëY40ÂÛ̳_ÁªÏëY40ÔõôÑù_ÁªÏëY50ÔõôÑù_ÁªÏëY50ÂÛ̳

... less portability, weight, price etc. etc.

For me the sweet spot is 15.6" because it is portable while still having good performance.

Anyways, can we please get back to the fact that A NEW FRIKKIN MODEL OF THE Y SERIES MAY HAVE JUST BEEN LEAKED?!!

Perhaps different colours are going to be released as well as a Y70?

I really don't get the reasoning of a laptop over 15" (its a laptop, its supposed to be portable) but i guess all to their own devices.

I'd think 17.3"inchers" appreciate the extra screen real estate.. I know I do! Also, I move a lot so having something gaming-worthy with me is a definite plus..

I'm not one to speculate but aren't these photos old? I get the impression they are from some pre-y50/40 release.. Couldn't the y70 shown be just a project that never made it? It does look like a (paper) prototype..

Its definitely after the Y50/40 announcement, not so sure about release. Also, I also think these are pure speculation, and the 'Y70' is a dummy (why would they have Y70 followed by a question mark on the projector screen if they had an actual model with them?)

Lenovo does make some laptops in orange, so the orange Y40 might happen. If I had to guess, I would assume that these photos are from before release, when they may have been in the planning stages.

On another topic, one thing that I really don't know much about is the performance difference between the 2GB and 4GB card. I get that the 4GB card is better, but is is $200 better? I do a lot of audio spectrum visualization renderings with video overlays for DJ's (After Effects CS6), so I really don't know if I should just pay the extra money for it and not have to worry about maxing out on VRAM.

Plus, are we really taking Lenovo's word on the 4GB card being Maxwell? I get that the OEM's can configure the cards, but every site I check lists the 4GB card as Kepler or doesn't list one at all. In this case the 2GB card would actually be better.

Now you've put another spot of uncertainty in my mind

I guess the only thing that we can do is wait for someone to get their laptop and have them see if it is Maxwell or Kepler, it would really suck if it was Kepler :(

    EDIT:
The Gigabyte P34 v2 also has a 4GB 860M listed as Maxwell, so there probably are 4GB Maxwell cards. Whether Lenovo has them is a different question.

For any of you ordering the base model, do you happen to know if the hard drive can be swapped out? I'd ideally like to replace the 5400 drive with an SSD (or the entire thing). If so, what adapter is it?

Yeah, you can swap it out with a standard 7mm SSD. You shouldn't need to buy an adapter, most come with them. Samsung EVO 840 SSD's are pretty easy to do, and they get really good reviews. Kingstons are good as well, here is a link to one - trust me, it's a good deal.
Amazon.com: Kingston Digital 240GB SSDNow V300 SATA 3 2.5 (7mm height) with Adapter Solid State Drive SV300S37A/240G: Computers & Accessories

You can find the Samsungs cheaper if you get a 500 GB or higher SSD. For the 240 or 120, they aren't the cheapest.

Did the same thing. I spend a lot of time looking at them and base non touch vs touch is around $200 and a difference between base non touch and upgraded graphics and memory is also around $200. $1330 for upgraded touch vs $1100 base non touch. That's $230 for a $400 "worth" of upgrade. Pretty good deal.

I can't find any sites that list the 4GB 860M as Maxwell. If you are seeing MXM, that doesn't mean Maxwell. Do you have the URL of where you found the Maxwell P34? It's not that I don't trust Lenovo or anyone, its just that they list "Up to 4GB NVIDIA GTX 860M series graphics" right below "integrated optical drive."

Just for reference, and too keep everyone updated as I should be the first to get my y50. (5 days before that other guy with a deliver date of June 2nd) my base model y50 is scheduled to be delivered on the 27th (The tracking says it is supposed to be delivered then, not Lenovo, it has already reached this side of the world so it should be accurate).

My planned upgrades at this point, which I will be perfroming in order:
-500 Gb Samsung EVO, this I already have and I will be putting in nearly immediately
-Intel 7260 AC m.2 NGFF wireless card, this will be getting here probably Thursday or Friday
-16 Gb ram upgrade, may or may not be doing this as I am unsure if I need it, will be more likely if there is a single 8gb chip in it already

I will be posting pics and my first impressions tuesday night in addition to temps and such, but those may come later.

Let me know if you guys have any pressing questions that I would be able to answer tuesday night.

Its confirmed doing any of that will void the warranty. You are okay with that?

Should I trust the shipping dates? I mean end of June sounds like a stretch. I remember getting my y500 in 6 days after i ordered :/

guys the y70 pics apparently comes from an event in which lenovo invites some y series user to visit their labs. WHAT YOU SEE THERE ARE ONLY CHASSIS, CHASSIS DESIGNED BUT NOT ACCEPTED INTO PRODUCTION

THEREFORE, THE Y70 IS ONLY AN ABANDONED MODEL

I guess I'll answer what I can now, the rest will have tto wait until Tuesday night.

I should be able to confirm all of those Tuesday night, and yes it is the 4700mq, I really don't care about the extra .1 Ghz and any very minor other differences.

When I first clone the drive to the SSD I can do some download tests and see if there are any pressing issues; it should be overall not too bad. I will be testing it on both 2.4 and 5 ghz, but not AC as I don't have an AC compatible router.

I'm totally fine if I void the whole warranty though I'm pretty sure it only voids the warranty for the parts I replace, and not the whole machine. In the case I need to have it repaired (I actually work at a Lenovo authorized repair location, short story, my campus has a laptop program with Lenovo and I repair T series models on the regular) I would either RMA the specific part or replace the swaped components before I send it to Lenovo.

can you also test the sRGB comparison of the screen and the battery life? also as I've read on tieba that some erazer models had build quality issues in which the gap of trackpad and the screen wedge is too wide, so be careful with those...

This is for everyone contemplating on the 4gb one being maxwell or kepler : If you have gone through the whole 300 pages , there has been a lot of discussion on this topic. To make things clear , the 4gb kepler only comes as MXM , i.e a Mobile pci express module , making it removable and upgradable. Now, MXM can't be in laptops as thin as these. Also , looking at the pic of the internals of the laptop , the card is soldered thus expelling the possibility of it being kepler. For anybody who further wants to clarify it search for "mxm" in this thread.
