Is no-one else annoyed at keyboards that don't even have the extra Home-End column on them? How on earth do people play RPGs on smaller keyboards? I'm always running out of space already, even with the extra 4 keys right beside my right hand. Or when emulating Gamecube games and you need to bind movement keys, C-stick, and D-pad? Apart from using the arrow keys, you somehow have to fit two more "arrow key-like" groups elsewhere on your keyboard and it's almost always awkward. And hard to remember where you put them (ex: was it IJKL or UHJK???) That's actually why I'm looking forward to having a numpad, lol.

The way DELL moved those keys to FN + arrow keys is super irritating because they have so much room to work with and having more keys can't possibly be a bad thing! Unless it means you have to shrink them, but on a 15.6" laptop that really shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah, that's it. Sorry, my bad.

@arcturar No, I haven't heard the coil whine myself but apparently it is a major issue. I think that the reason for the lack of home/page up/page down/end keys is that they tried to center the g and h on the laptop pretty well. That's just a total guess on my part, but it is nicely centered, so who knows? :)

These are exactly the changes I was thinking of doing. could you keep a notepad out for any issues/thoughts that you encounter that may help other, less skilled modders work on the y50?

Have you actually used it? The heat is indeed worrisome to me, but only from the standpoint of worrying how it'll affect the overall lifespan of the laptop. It has otherwise been a fantastic laptop.

So, as I am still probably going to be the first person to reieve my y50, it looks like it may be Wednesday instead of tomorrow unless it makes it to Minnesota by tomorrow. It just left Kansas and says it got it's "import scan" earlier today. Looks like customs took a while with their crap which is annoying and now it has shifted my delivery time to Wednesday. Ugh, I just want to get my hands on this thing and get you guys some answers!

Anyways, I'll keep y'all posted on it, but you may have to wait another day. What else is new. haha

Yes, I saw the pictures. I'd consider it minor even in that case. I've had zero issues with mine. The only reason I'd hesitate to recommend it is the excessive throttling from the heat.

How did anyone get tax-free from the amazon seller Klick Online? I bought mine and it had the regular 6% from Maryland +10 USD for shipping (Total $1,176.58).
I cant wait to get my hands on it, already purchased a SAMSUNG 840 EVO 500GB to swap, timothyz why are you going to change the wireless card?

Do you live in Maryland? That's apparently the only state where they have to charge sales tax because that's where they are located. If you can have it shipped to VA or DE or DC, then they won't have to charge you sales tax.

Hi guys, signed up to make this post. Been following this thread since page 30ish.

Been looking for a thin, gaming laptop.
    Here's what's important to me:
    SSD
    I want a touchscreen
Not too concerned about the card, 850m or 860m will be enough. This will be my first gaming PC as I go off to college next year and am done with xbox.

The lenovo y50 is pretty much perfect, except so far there isn't an option for SSD with touchscreen... what's the likelihood that there will be one?

The only other option I've considered is the MSI GS60 Ghost, but again this is lacking a touchscreen, but it makes up for it in build quality (aluminum) and has a good size SSD with plenty of space with the 750gb HDD as well. The Y50 scares me a bit with only 512gb of memory, would this run out fairly quick?

Also, I don't really want to push over $1500.

TL :DR, if the Y50 doesn't come with SSD and Touchscreen, should I get the MSI GS60?

With $1500 buy the cheapest Y50 touchscreen and spend the rest on a SAMSUNG 840 EVO, tough I believe you are going to loose warranty

I have played around in some old computers, but not sure I want to try and install a SSD into as tight of a package as the Y50. Maybe xoticpc?

From my experience, xotic is overpriced and isn't worth the hassle in general. SSD installation isn't too bad, the guy getting his tomorrow/Wednesday is going to do the swap. I would wait and see how easy he says it is or isn't, and go from there.

Didn't Lenovo make upgrading the WiFi card impossible on some of its past models? I was told if you replaced the networking card that the system wouldn't boot. I would definitely like to replace the WiFi card with the latest model from Intel.

Also, has there been confirmation regarding the cooling system from the pictures? I was really hoping for one of those really nice dual-fan cooling setups like in the Gigabyte p34g v2 or the Asus N550jk, and looking at the pic of the Y50's internals doesn't look to promising :(

    Please, please, PLEASE:

-bust out your cell to take several good pics of the internals
-let us know how the WiFi upgrade goes
    -measure stress-test temperatures
-if you're planning on it, results of OC'ing the 860m
    -gaming battery life

...I'm tempted to buy you Watch Dogs, just so you can report on performance.

    THANK YOU!!!

The actual physical removing of the HDD and replacing with the SSD should be completely trivial. It will be much more of an issue to get Windows 8.1 installed and running on the SSD, but that's because of the way 8.1 works and the fact that MS no longer offers an alternative to have OS media shipped with new computers.

I'll have to look into this. 8.1 is really nice for when something goes wrong and you have restore/reinstall your OS, it did it for me automatically without deleting anything, but without a physical disc or product code I wouldn't know how to install an OS on a new drive.

Gaming battery life is just pointless because
    1. No laptop gets good battery life while playing games
    2. Who plays games on battery anyways?

It's more important to know battery life for normal usage like web surfing, word docs and some videos

On the other hand, tbh, watchdog is probably just poorly optimized rather than actually demanding like cod ghost. I would suggest testing with more mainstream stuff like bf4 or crysis 3

you just shouldn't get a touchscreen!

that goes for all who want a touchscreen :p :p

i know a lot of people who have touchscreens on their laptops and all told me they almost never use it and that it's not worth the extra money

so if you are one of those who THINK you would like a touchscreen, think again

Yep, the only true UHD 15.6 laptop is Toshiba.
Despite the difference, people often mistaken QHD+ with UHD.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that you lose the warranty on your whole laptop. This is because theres a sticker connected to the screws in your laptop, and if you try to unscrew the back it breaks the sticker, meaning warranty is gone. The only people that are 'allowed' to do that are the official Lenovo guys because they have extra stickers that can go back on.

Fellow Canadians, does anyone else want to try calling Lenovo and asking what the hell is going on regarding product tracking?
I called last Thursday and they said they need 24-48 hours for the manufacturers to figure out estimates. It's now been longer, but I don't really want to call them again myself. It's someone else's turn. :p

Hey, been following this thread for a while but just signed up to let you guys know I spotted a deal on ExtremeTech for this laptop:
Unsure if it works/is worth it as I need to wait for the laptop to hit .co.uk before I can really get it, but if it is just $270 off that seems like a pretty good extra. The model it's for is the i7-4710HQ too (which sadly seems to be the one with the worst shipping dates, but ah well).

ET deals: $270 off the Lenovo Y50 gaming laptop with GTX 860M | ExtremeTech
