This is actually the main reason I ordered the touch version. It makes the laptop look nicer. I don't want the touch screen functionality, I already have a tablet. If you want a better look at the glass to glass screen look at videos/pictures of the Lenovo Yoga 2.
-
Which is the touch version on the official Lenovo Y50 US page? Somehow I cant see to distinguish which is touch and which is non touch. Also is there a 1 pound difference in weight between the touch and non touch?
-
They separated the two different versions already.
One category literally says "Y50 Touch" - These are the touch versions.
The other just says "Y50" - meaning non touch.
And if you looked at the specs the Y50 touch is 5.7 lbs, while the Y50 non touch is 5.3 lbs.
It's all on the website. -
US is 120 V at 60 Hz & UK is 240 V at 50 Hz. But generally, with modern laptops, that's not something you need to worry about. If you look at a laptop's AC adapter (the brick) you'll see that it says something like
INPUT: 100-240 V ~ 2.5A, 50-60Hz
OUTPUT: 19.5 V === 4.61 A (This varies a lot by laptop)
Most modern laptop AC adapters will accept anything in the 100-240V range without issue, and Lenovo's should be no exception. So all you should need is an adapter (not a converter).

This is an example of various adapter plugs
http://www.laptopdvdrw.com/image/cache/Adaptors/Others/Adapter Plug-500x500.jpg
The third, rounded prong on the bottom of the US cord may or may not be present, as many laptop plugs are now just two prongs. There's no real difference between the two, but I don't know which this laptop has. All adapters should be equipped for either. I suggest just getting a universal one, that works for any country; they're quite cheap on Amazon.
Even something as simple as this will work:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/eFuture-Uni...24845&sr=8-8&keywords=universal+power+adapter
You'll need to take it with you everywhere, though, unless you buy a replacement AC adapter for UK plugs when the Y50 comes out there.Metazoick likes this. -
The y50 and the y50 touch are listed as separate laptops - if you go to the y series page you should be able to see them both. The non touch weighs in at around 5.3lbs and the touch at 5.7lbs, making it less than half a pounds difference between them.

Ah, thank you so much! I'm glad I wont mess anything up due to getting the US charger, you're a lifesaver. -
Mine made it to Alaska! Updated delivery shows tomorrow. Guess we'll see. Just for info, I ordered the base model about 2 1/2 weeks ago. So far, Lenovo's been on the money, early even.

Thanks for the help. I was going via google straight to the Y50 non touch page so didnt realize there was a touch version listed. So the touch screen model is $150 extra with no other difference other than the .4 pound weight increase I take.

I just did a quick comparison of the two most basic models and the only noted differences are the weight, cost and the touch (obviously). There may be extra differences with the screen though (such as not being matte etc) but there seems to be no other hardware differences.
Yay! -
Tommorrow is the big day...I'll be ordering from klick!
-
The screen on the touch version is definitely not matte. I don't believe there are any other hardware differences between the touch and non-touch models other than the glossy touch screen vs the matte non-touch screen.
-
Nemesis and timothyz you two will have so much rep power by the end of this week

I'm just about to grab it (though it'll still be a while to arrive due to the Atlantic being in the way, so by the time I get it I wont have anything useful to add). I just wanted to check it, well, worked first. I'm already excited, I've been following this laptop for far too long.ian3 likes this.

I'm so close to doing this, but since I'll be doing lots of mobile video editing I was really looking forward to the 4gb card / slightly faster CPU... but I'll need it for a project at the beginning of July so I may have to cave. Ahhhh!
-
Can an owner describe the range and speed of the stock WiFi card? Some people in this thread said it was garbage and I want to know if it is a necessary upgrade. Thanks!
-
If you're doing video editing the 4gb may be helpful, but if you're talking about the 4700 and 4710 the difference is negligible iirc (though the stupid magpie part of my brain still wanted the higher number). But I received an email from Klick earlier today and they should be getting the 16gb 4gb laptop mid next week hopefully, which is more expensive but should give you what you need?
EDIT: Think I misread, thought you were waiting on a 4gb model to become available from a different retailer rather than wanting the 4gb 4710 model to have faster shipping from Lenovo, my bad.ian3 likes this. -
I'm living with no desktop or laptop at the moment. I'm forced to live on my tablet for entertainment until my Touch 4GB GTX and 4710HQ arrives in June. The agony of waiting until mid June lol I hope it pays off in the end and I hope it arrives before my graduation as a gift to myself XDian3 likes this.

I ordered mine on 05/26 and am expected to receive it 06/25. You may be able to receive it just in the nick of time.
-
Yeah I think getting 4 GB Ram and the 4710HQ vs the base models is not that big a deal.. I think I'm going to regret the optical drive more.. If they actually were able to implement some sort of slick slot loader blu-ray drive like Apple uses then I might kick myself!!
-
Oh wow, video editing is the one thing where the 4GB card will trump the 2GB card. Still, is it full-quality (as in original, full raw files) or scaled-down editing and rendering? You might be able to get away with the 2GB card.
-
Yeah, I'm sad about the integrated drive too (as one of the last people to still buy actual CDs), but it isn't likely to be integrated from the looks of things, and finding out if it is and then waiting for a model including it to be available to me, plus the extra cost? I'd rather just grab an external USB one.
-
I feel like Lenovo is causing a lot of people to buy the external Blu-Ray model because they think that it is built in. They really could've fit a slot loader if they really wanted to before they designed the Y50. I think that these are more useful anyway, plus they're like 20 bucks if you find them on sale-

Anyone knows what model Tim received?
And Plz give us some pics~

Searched the thread, but couldn't find a good answer to this. Google isn't much help either.
I'm not that familiar with the real-world differences between wifi cards. If I stuck with the 3160, instead of upgrading to the 7260, what be the actual difference in things like browsing, streaming, or MMOs? I've never actually compared wifi cards head to head, and I know the 7260 is faster, but does it make a difference in general applications? -
All I know is it will be better than the wifi card in my 2012 Y500 which has wifi cuts every now and then which is annoying when I have 10 tabs open. All my phones and tablets connect fine to and I even put an extender to no avail. I hope the y50's wifi card is better.
-
I believe that the 3160 is 1x1 AC while the 7260 is 2x2 AC. It's a cheap upgrade and will further "future-proof" (isn't a great term, sorry) your Y50.

Aaaand I just took the plunge! The laptop will be in my hands in the first half of june (probably). Very happy I went for it.

Klick or Lenovo?

Klick, Lenovo don't ship international, plus Klick have 1-2 weeks shipping time so I'll probably get it quicker than some Americans just ordering will get theirs from the actual site haha.

Alright, update 2,
I have been using it for a bit with the SSD, and it's of course really really fast.
I haven't swapped out the wireless card just yet, I am going to do that and then post some pictures regarding the internals.
Speaking of internals:
There are no warranty voiding stickers for replacing the HDD, ram, or wireless card. Just to clear that up.
For disassembly, all screws on the bottom need to be removed and there are some clips on the side with the ethernet jack near the usb ports that need to be "unclipped" nothing serios, just caution must be taken to not damage them.
The heatsink however, is the same as we've seen with the i5 models. There is no difference and I don't expect there to be any difference until we get a refreshed y50 in a couple months.
The stock wireless card is not bad, I haven't figured a good way to test it, but it doesn't drop connection or anything like that and has overall good range and signal.
Some side build quality notes, after reassembly, I noticed some light seeping out beneath the indicator lights on the front. I might not have tightened the screws enough. We will see.
There also seems to be a bump in the relative center of the touchpad. I'm not sure if this will go away. It's minor and hard to see and doesn't cause any problems with use... I don't really notice it.
Will report back. Sorry for the wait, I had to run some errands and I am just getting around to this.LanceAvion, ChowMeow, H01D3N and 7 others like this. -
As for the touchpad, do the left and right click areas sink when you press them? This was a huge Y510p issue.
Thanks for the update too. -
It was the base model y50, i7 4700HQ version.
Though, after upgrading to a Samsung EVO 840 and prepping to put in an Intel 7260 AC wireless card, it's really not that base of a model.
If you want to know anything else, let me know. pics coming soon. -
They do sink, not quite as much as the y510p,but still a good amount, was the issue that they do or don't sink?
Also this touchpad is quite different feeling than the y510p touchpad, it is made by ELAN not Synaptics, so that is probably why. -
The issue was that they sank to the point where you couldn't actually click the buttons. That's good to know, thanks.

Just a note for anybody buying this with an international currency - I'm in the process of actually paying and the paypal exchange rate is much worse than google alone says (gives only 1.61 USD per GDP rather than 1.67, and this change is apparently across the board as far as currencies go). It bumped up my laptop by about £20/30, which isn't that much but still annoying for just converting the cash. If you can find your bank fees for doing it through the card rather than through paypal it apparently tends to be cheaper, though my bank is using paypals rate so not for me. Just a heads up to anybody that may be affected!
-
You think there will be a refresh in a couple months[/U? I thought refreshes usually happened once a year? If it's just a couple months until getting an even better system, I might cancel the order and wait...
-
The only refresh until the 2015 models will probably be this i5 model. Lenovo doesn't do twice a year refreshes on its Y series, unless you count the Y510p going from GT 750M SLI to GT 755M SLI. -
I mean a couple months by like 8 months. So, it's not really worth it to wait, it could also be upwards of 12 months, you never know with Lenovo. -
Even if there is a refresh (which won't be soon as others have said), I think its safe to say that it will be minor like how they updated the GT 750M in the Y510p to 755M -
can you post some pics of the internals including the heatsink?
-
timothy do you plan on doing a battery test on moderate usage soon?
-
Just a couple of questions again. You said the screen was a bit disappointing, how do you compare this display to y510p?
Also of you did get the 4gb model, can you confirm if its Maxwell?
Any other disappointments you could tell us about?
Thanks -
Timothy, would you mind testing durability by dropping it from a 2nd story window? I'd like to make sure it passes the toughness test.
Just kidding... But definitely wanted to give a big thanks for taking the time to provide all the info, it's much appreciated. We're all frothing at the mouth here. -
He got the 2GB version.
-
Cool! Some fps from battlefield and crysis would be really appreciated!
-
Man if someone could leak a version with the optical drive or atleast confirm it's external, that would be great..
-
@heibk201 He said pictures are coming, we'll just have to wait. He might not be in the same time zone as a lot of us, so as for updates it could be anytime.
@shahmeer I noted that too, about the 750M to 755M, but I don't think that will happen with the Y50. There could be potential for a Y510p update with something like 850M SLI, but I don't know.
@timothyz Again, thanks for the info about your laptop, the information you've given so far is way more helpful than any CES video out there.
By the way, thread stats are insane:

Just waiting for the higher spec to be available ASAP (from anyone) so I can work on the road slightly more efficiently. 1080p footage will be happy to have 4gb of vram I'm sure. I suppose the 4710 won't make as much of a difference.
Hopefully Lenovo can work out these manufacturing issues, or whatever is really causing the delay. Been waiting to replace a 2007 Macbook Pro for mobile editing and gaming, and this will be it. Dota2 in bootcamp on that machine is not a happy camper, quite literally.Banender likes this.
