All the Lenovo reps now say external, so when they all have the same answer it's more reliable. That model doesn't ship for at least another week or two, but maybe foreign reviews soon?
UPDATE
Lenovo apparently offers their own external DVD drive. Maybe a bundle sort of thing?

Are you guys aware how much VRAM Watch Dogs needs to remain at 60 fps at 1080p High-Ultra settings? People with 2GB GTX 770 are frustrated all over different gaming forums.
y50 with 4GB of VRAM is very desirable at this point, especially since this is marketed as a gaming machine. Watch Dogs doesn't even look that impressive, albeit optimized poorly for PC, so all these definitive replies on this forum about how one doesn't need more than 2GB of VRAM is misleading to say the least.227 likes this. -
I'm in the Same postion as you...trying to upgrade my 2007 Macbook finally so I can use After and Primere more efficently but this whole shipping issue and delays are killing me and not a single unboxing review or performance review isn't helping with my decision to purchase this laptop
Damn You Lenovo haha

Yeah if it's external then I'm glad I didn't order it.. Can get a superior one independently..

It has been stated by many reviewers that the game is terribly optimized. Total biscuit has dual gtx titans and cannot get 60fps on max. If you think 2gb of vram will help out a gtx 860m then you are mistaken. If you take the time to read vram discussions elsewhere, you will see that most, if not all, games do not require over 2gb of vram (if they do the gtx860m isn't enough powerful enough anyway).
Now, games coming out in coming years may need more vram, but as above, if you need that much more vram, the gtx 860m probably won't be fast enough anyway.H01D3N, Banender, ArgentWren and 1 other person like this. -
Correct me if I'm wrong please, but the issue here is not having enough VRAM to load higher quality textures not the card being fast enough , though that has a lot to do with optimization, amount of VRAM is the underlying cause in dipping in frames. The current gen consoles are holding current games back in my opinion, so since a lot of the talk here is about "future proofing" their system, one can't be so definitive as some have been on here saying that 2GB extra VRAM is not needed unless for video editing or heavy modded games.
-
and yet we are still not the most active thread, while the most "active" threads have been inactive for quite a while
yes watchdog is just a game w/ the crappiest optimization. this is one game which you need an i7 and need more VRAM to play, although the graphics are really just so so. if you have anything less than a GTX 770, don't even try to play it on ultra b/c it will fry your vram right away.
console gaming is the opposite of future proofing, it's not even capable to catch up to modern mid range graphic cards. console's GPU is at max a radeon 7790, which is worse than a GTX 650ti and therefore worse than an 860M. future proof? BS consoles need to hurry their a$$ up so they don't fall behind.
on the other hand, I agree that if you are playing something with that much demand of vram then you'll need something better than an 860M -
Watch dogs is a garbage gta clone that's filled with memes from 2002 and overall not pretty to look at or very fun to play. Overhyped unoptomized mess. Who cares.
-
+1 -> people who claim that 2GB vs 4GB does not make any difference on 1080p are just blatantly wrong. If you run games with heavy textures (even older ones - like Skyrim) or they are new or poorly optimized you may hit the ceiling and than no raw power of the GPU will help you.
-
Its supposed to be a Blu-Ray player as well, so it probably won't be that.
And anyways, if the Y50 comes with external optical drive, I would cancel the order right away. You can get a cheap ~$30 dollar dvd drive from most electronic shops (this won't have blu-ray capabilities but tbh, who actually has blu-rays?).Metazoick likes this. -
You are correct, more vram could help in Watch Dogs' particular case (skyrim heavily modded etc.), but the vram is only part of the equation being affected by the optimization problems. At this point in time there aren't any good benchmarks that I've found (mutliple gpus using different vram variants) to make a decisive conclusion as to wether the extram vram would help, or even if the gpu's power itself is a factor as well. It's probably a combination of several factors.
The main argument people seem to be making about the vram is that the gtx 860m running at 1080p is rarely going to need to extra vram in "normal" gaming situations, and thus are recommending other users to not waste the $100+ extra. It's defiantly a nice option for some who do need it, though.ChowMeow likes this. -
Does anyone even have one of these yet?
-
Assuming you are referring to the Y50, yes, timothyz has it, he posted twice about it after he got it. It should be in the last ~5 pages.
-
Apple doesn't even sell a laptop with an optical drive anymore.
Two people here in the thread had them delivered today. One has posted a few details about it. The other only said that he got it and that details would be forthcoming. -
Nice, as I continue to use my Asus G750JM the more I'm interested in the Y50. The biggest issue I have right now is the screen. The viewing angles are really bad.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk -
If that's a big issue for you, you should probably look into a laptop with an IPS screen. Unfortunately, the 1920 x 1080 versions of the Y50 only have a TN panel, and the specs on the upcoming 4K screen have yet to be released.
-
I wish there was an IPS "gaming" laptop around $1500-$1700
At least I don't know of one.

MSI GS60 Ghost has PLS matrix witch is Samsung's IPS matrix. Price of it starts about $1650 in my country (but without OS and SSD, only HDD 1TB).
Guys, take some photos of the screen!
Sorry for my English!

i must say i am disappointed... i am not surprised but i am disappointed none the less... about the screen
guess all those folks stating "my y510p has excellent viewing angles so i guess y50 shouldn't be much worse" didn't know what the hell they were talking about if the above review turns out to be true... of course side-to-side viewing angles are ok but it's really the vertical viewing angles that really annoy me
i guess i was hoping for the TN vertical viewing angles to be at least average, not poor to average
So what are my options? Buy the 1080p anti-glare TN panel y50 or wait for allegedly IPS 4k GLOSSY panel y50 that may or may not arrive in a couple of months?
i hate TN and i hate GLOSSY
i think i'm considering jumping off this train... luckily i waited for a review before pulling the trigger
sorry for all those who don't mind viewing angles, but for all those that do - what will you do??Oranjoose likes this. -
I'm in Taiwan and the waiting is too long since Y50 isn't released yet.
Perhaps I should buy GS60 instead with US$1600

I've a question... and an idea
Did anybody ever consider sticking a matte film on their glossy laptop screen? Much like you can do on your smartphone
Wouldn't that solve the issue of matte vs glossy preference say if you were to buy the glossy 4k display and want to turn it into matte?
Considering doing this... that way i will have everything i need (an IPS matte display laptop - if the 4k y50 turns out to have an IPS panel that is) -
Yes you can do this, but only on glossy screens (obviously). Glossy screens are usually more expensive, and the Y50 doesn't have a glossy screen, so this idea doesn't apply to it. I know there are matte screen covers for monitors, haven't seen one for laptop screens though.
-
the y50's upcoming 4k version most probably will have a glossy screen and that's the one i was (obviously) referring to
did you just wake up or what? hehe -

Yes, anti-glare filters/screen protectors are not uncommon, but you lose a small amount of brightness and the color temperature may be affected. The problem is finding one that is cut to fit your bezel or using a generic one that is close enough. -
You could always get a large one (e.g. 17 inch) and cut it yourself
Woops. Well I guess this is what I get for staying up all night and revising for exams
-
off-topic: doesn't that point to the fact that it's better to not stay up all night studying but instead get a good night's sleep for your exams?
-
You've got 3 options; procrastinate or study. Wait, who are you trying to kid, of course you'll procrastinate until the last moment
So now you've got 2 options. Your exam is in 7 hours. You could:
1. Revise all night, but be absolutely stoned in the morning
2. Go to sleep, become christian for a day and pray to god that the exam is easy.whistle likes this. -

the power cord attached to the laptop seems kinda stupid though.... wth is that?? bulging out like that lol
worst power cord i've ever seen on a laptop!
didn't realise it until now -
Question: is the surface around the touchpad soft touch or is it aluminum like the Y500 and Y510p? And is the trackpad still crappy like the y500 and y510p?

Yay, pictures! Are you happy with it overall?

Just made an account , Cannot wait to see Pro Review on Youtube about Lenovo Y50
Planning to order one thru Amazon Soon , -
This was my review of the Y500 and surprisingly I was the first to review it after 2 months it was released lol Lenovo Y500 SLI Full English Review and Benchmarks - YouTube.
I plan to do a video review on the Y50 touch with 4710HQ and 4GB GTX860m. Hopefully it'll come fast and I'll be the first again. -

One of the stickers even advertises their 4K screen .... IMO that's really dumb. -
Mine will be delivered tomorrow (standard model, nontouch, 2gb gpu, 4700)
The only camera I can find is my smartphone... which may or may not have issues uploading a video to the web.
We'll see.H01D3N likes this. -
BTW what were the vertical viewing angles of the y500 according to you?
you're youtube video didn't include this lol! im going insane -
How would you compare the trackpad with the y510p? I always found the y500/510p trackpads to be mediocre. Is the friction any less on the y50?
-
Yeah, I've told that to everyone who complains about glossy on here
-
Anyone else think that the new GTX sticker is so much better than the old one?
Thanks for the pic by the wayBlazeHN likes this. -
A matte film WOULD work, but if you're putting it over a 4k it seems wasteful. If the only reason you'd be paying so much extra is the IPS then sure it'd work, but last time I checked pretty much none of the filters don't impair the screen at least a little, slightly changed colours or in some cases I've seen a small blur etc. If you can find one which has literally no effect other than it being matte, which you may very well be able to do at this point, then it's a good option - otherwise you're paying a lot for a perfect screen you're going to somewhat cover up.Banender likes this.

The ultimate product for glossy and IPS haters. I posted this one a long time ago, but here it is again. So it's a "privacy screen protector." This means that anyone out of a 35 degree range (I think) cannot see what is on your screen. This is pretty good because who wants someone to see exactly what is on your computer screen just as well as you can? Plus, it's reversible. One side is glossy and one side is matte. I think it works with touchscreen too, but I'm not totally sure. Notice its the #1 laptop screen protector on Amazon.

Wow the one for 999€ on German Amazon is a sweet deal! What kind of SSD is used? Does anyone know that? A rep on the Lenovo chat of the US website said all Drives, HDD+SSD and SSD are by Seagate, but the rep didn´t seem to know it for sure...
-
I just checked German amazon and there are a lot of models on there - but none of them are in stock, and they might only start selling them when the y50 officially comes over (in july/august at a guess), so if you were looking to buy it right now it may not be great. As for the SSD I can't help you out, I had a quick look around and found nothing. I'm pretty sure timothyz in this thread got +SSD iirc, possibly somebody else did too, so you could always ask them?
EDIT: Just on live chat with them now to find out - a product specialist said that the HDDs are Samsung, the SSDs are intel but this depends on the size of the SSD, the MicroSSDs are intel (I'm assuming this is the SSD in hyrbid models but I'm not 100%) in this model but some full ones are Samsung.
