Is this product advisable for a matte screen?

Someone recently said on this forum that all the Lenovo reps now agree that the Blu-Ray drive is external... unfortunately the one I asked yesterday disagrees; he checked with a supervisor and confirmed that the Blu-Ray drive is INTERNAL... not that I necessarily believe him but just FYI, they're not all on the same page yet.
I don't understand how/why they would sell a model with a Blu-Ray drive and not specify that it's an external accessory rather than *part of the laptop*... if that's the case, they will end up with so many returns for that reason alone!! One of my "must-haves" was an internal optical drive (along with a higher GTX gaming card) and it's getting hard for me to even find what I need for around $1200 or less.
Thanks for the reviews/pics Timothy & Nemesis! -
Yeah, both my sales reps swore up and down that it was internal as well. I'll be sort of disappointed that I didn't get the optical drive if there was a slot-loading Blu-Ray option.
-
Can I just ask why an internal optical drive is a must have? I used to consider it one too but I've come around to an external one - unless you'd be using it on the go so much that a portable one just wouldn't be practical?
-
Sure, no prob. At first I didn't think I'd need an internal optical drive but the more I thought about it the more I realized that dragging an external around with me was not really convenient. I have a housemate and since we share the TV I will often try to watch DVDs in my bedroom instead. I want to be able to lie on my bed and watch them, or bring the laptop out to the kitchen table and watch stuff while I'm eating... just like I would a tablet... and the external DVD player is just annoying and makes me less likely to want to bring my laptop places, less likely to consider it truly portable. Same if I bring my laptop to a friend's house or on trips. There are still lots of things I can only get on Netflix discs (not instant) or from the library. So to me it's a worthwhile feature.
whistle likes this. -
you can download practically anything within an hour with modern internet connection...
or you can copy it on your computer while making food and come back... voila you have it on your hard drive...
or you can connect an external hard drive to a wifi and put everything on that harddrive and access it wirelessly over the wifi... -
If you use them a lot for DVDs I could see why - I mainly only use mine for ripping CDs so it doesn't need to be in use while I'm listening to music etc. Although when I did need it still plugged in it probably wouldn't get in the way, and if rested on the keyboard I could move it about just as easily. If you're worried about size there are some small ones out there - you can easily pick one up the size of a slightly thicker plastic jewel case. As for the netflix - I'm assuming you don't have American netflix if you don't have a good range for instant? It'd be pretty much no effort to tell the site to show you the American listings like I do, in which case you'd be able to get way more on instant and have to rely less on discs.
-
I like to research things but I'm not super techy... didn't think it would let me copy Netflix DVDs onto my external hard drive for example, figured they'd be protected? Even with the American Netflix I have TONS of stuff on my DVD queue they don't have on Instant yet. I need a service like Netflix/Hulu because it's too expensive to buy tons of TV series individually, especially when I don't need to own them and only want to watch once. If there are other solutions I'm open, but wasn't aware of any other legal ones. It would be great to not have to be reliant on an optical drive considering the market, but I wasn't sure if it would work for me in a practical sense.
-
if you have netflix why don't you just stream it online?

I need to help you guys if you would agree with me that the GIGABYTE P25Wv2-CF5 the best choice for you its not heavy and its not big its really good looking laptop with very powerful performance! 1500$ worth your money with amazing design and run cool also so powerful little monster! lol Nobody cared about viewing angles back then because it was the end of the world. I'm looking at my Y500 now it has great horizontal viewing angles, however, the vertical viewing angles aren't good like most laptops. I don't care about it though because I won't be using my laptop in that weird angle.edwardamin13 and BlazeHN like this.

Hehe. You have to start your post with warning warning warning??

calling it a "weird" angle is kinda disrespectful (not that i really care). Just for reference, and i know this might be too picky to some people, but when i lean back in my chair i already have to deal with this so called "weird" and unusual (sarcasm) angle
like i said, you have to be picky to care (and too lazy to constantly tilt the screen back so the picture is good again) but it's not at all an unusual situation to the point of calling it "weird" -
Ever heard of fullstops? Also, this laptop is fat as heck, and in my opinion it looks much worse than the Y50. Also its not even out yet, so how do you know that it has good cooling? Finally, the base model starts at $1600, while the Y50 starts at $1150.
I think everyone on this forum knows that the Y50 won't have the cooling of an AlienWare 18, but theres a trade off to be made between performance and portability, and I think the Y50 lands right in the middle without being too expensive -
I am trying to help some people who don't know what to get hehe, I hope my message warning lol will help some one iTS COME WITH 1tb and 128gb I think its so fair to get laptop in that specs don't you think?
-
I really don't want to be disrespectful here but I have no idea what you're saying.
Wait, I deciphered a bit. Yes the specs are good for that laptop, but really that and the Y50 are in separate categories. Y50 is for portable gaming, while GIGABYTE P25Wv2-CF5 (who comes up with these names!?) is meant for not-so-portable gamnig.BlazeHN and PsylentStorm like this. -
what thread is this bro?

I think you just helped people get more confused. -
@PSXQ8
I also forgot to mention the fact that you linked the main XOTIC PC Laptop page instead of the 'GIGABYTE P25Wv2-CF5' page
.
-
Is this a XoticPC marketing campaign for Gigabyte P25?
Nvm, the link landed in the XoticPC main page!

Yes I know because based on the old old version 770m and you getting GTX 870, HHD1TB SSD 128GB
For people who want to get the y50 1450$ one and the GIGABYTE P25Wv2-CF5 if you go to CUSTOMIZE Drop the cpu to 4700 model You will get it for about $1490.00 after the CASH DISCOUNTED PRICE
$1445.30 so its better don't you agree?
The Gigabyte is not fat not true only 1.51" (h) 6.17 lbs better cooling better storage better GPU! and design very well good!
while the Y50 5.29 lbs 0.9" Good design less gpu, less storage, heat of course! hehe -
Are there any benchmarks on this better cooling claims? Is the Panel IPS? Coz there still seems to around $350 difference even if you drop the processor 4700 to cut down on the pricing.

This is a Y50 thread. The Gigabyte is a lot more expensive than the Y50. I'm fine with people discussing laptops, but your post sounds like...an advertisement of sorts.
No offense, but your first post(or any posts that are longer than a link) sounded like a teenager who can't really english, who thinks he found the best laptop for the money, and who is simply excited to get his new laptop. If you are excited, good for you. I just feel that the gigabyte and the lenovo y50 aren't really comparable as the base y50 is still a couple hundred dollars cheaper than the base gigabyte.JaneL, WhiteWuf and fantasticzig like this. -

Just found this video and I have to say the G550jk looks beautiful. I was thinking of just waiting for next year, but this looks very enticing:

you know typically I don't like to dis on a laptop that much in favor of another which makes me look like a fanboy, but just to make someone stop spamming, I'll do this just once.
1. P25W v2 comes with only 8GB of DDR3 ram while the highest price model of Y50 comes with 16GB of DDR3L that's already $100 more of value
2. you can look up the price and I guarantee you a 512gb ssd always costs more than 1TB HDD +128 SSD, not to mention the majority of people here don't even need 1tb
3. although the ac 3160 is as crappy as it can get, it's still better some "stock single band wireless card that only goes up to N"
4. 870M? have fun cooling that, gigabyte isn't asus
5. 1.51" isn't fat? what happened to the days when people are complaining the n550 is thick? 6.17lb is .88 lbs heavier than the y50, it's pretty noticeable
6. warranty? ever thought of that? if we are disregarding the warranty and design, why don't we go clevo all the way?
7. cash discount? you mean you have to mail them a money order? hmm how reliable is that I wonderH01D3N and krzysiekhusarz like this. -
The thing that I don't get is that the Gigabyte and the Y50 are only comparable if you're looking for a 15.6" gaming laptop with a 860M or better. To me, that's where the comparisons end. The P25Wv2 is a half inch thicker, almost a half pound heavier, with a Kepler (albeit stronger) GPU. For those looking at the Y50 touch, the P25Wv2 doesn't even have that. As others have mentioned, the price range puts it in a different ball park.
The problem is that you're touting the Gigabyte as a competitor to the Y50, and for many of us this is simply not the case. So far NO ONE has agreed with you, so I think it's safe to say you can drop your case. -

I have tried to be respectful, but as someone else has stated, your english writing style is a bit immature. However, since it is indeed a second language to you, I canunderstand why.
Apologies if I have insulted you in any way.BlazeHN, PSXQ8 and fantasticzig like this. -
Post above is right; you're not casually mentioning something in a Y50 thread, you're actively advertising it. Go to the relevant thread for your laptop or start one.
That out of the way, let's look at what I got when I purchased my Lenovo Y50:
Model #59421835
Core i7-4710HQ
15.6" 10-point Multitouch
MAXWELL Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M 4GB GDDR5
16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
Hybrid 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB Solid State Cache
JBL stereo speakers and built-in subwoofer (with Dolby Advanced Audio surround sound)
Backlit keyboard
UNDER 1" thin
5.7 lbs
-$1399
MINUS STUDENT DISCOUNT (which they don't verify, by the way; you can even just tell them you're planning on going back to school) = $1325.
THEN, if you're slick, you call them back and tell them you want to cancel and buy from a third party vendor to avoid tax and get faster shipping, and they are (currently) docking another 5% to retain you!!!
= $1259
That is a lot of bang for the buck. I'm happy with my purchase, and looking forward to getting my laptop! And an update from Tim!!!!
-
If you are willing to sacrifice about 25-30% GPU power and about .3-.4 pound increase in weight the G550JK or the N550JK are good choices with a much better screen.
No comparisons on cooling yet but the N550JK cooling is pretty good and near silent as per reviews/user comments. Hard to imagine that the Y50 would be able to match it let alone surprass with a thinner chassis and a more powerful GPU.
I still feel that Lenovo dropped the ball on the Y50 and the addition of an IPS panel would have made it a near perfect gaming laptop in lots of respects.Banender and PsylentStorm like this. -
Yep, agree with you completely on this. I am in no way anti-Lenovo (I have a y580p and a y510p!) and the 860m is much better than the 850m for sure. The ASUS checks a lot of boxes for me at this point though including the internal optical drive, the IPS panel and the overall design.
Plus the wifi on the y580 and the y510 are, frankly, excrement. The weird thing is I have the identical wifi card (intel n2230) in my old ASUS U47vc and never had a problem. -
Well its always frustrating to see that the 'perfect laptop' is always out of reach by a few inches! I mean going over the N550JK/G550JK , if they had swapped the DDR3 850M to a DDR5 850M, i am pretty sure performance would have been within 10% of the 860M thus making that the near perfect laptop to buy.
Sigh.. Sometimes i feel these manufacturers torture us with these decisions by not incorporating all the common wanted features in one laptop.
Coming back to topic, is the Y50 battery user replaceable? -
I think your are right most people can't afford MSI or gigabyte, Y50 is a good laptop not the top though the buck yes not for me I was just trying to help that its all, My point is that people who can AFFORD LAPTOP LIKE MSI, RAZER BLADE AND GIGABYTE THE SLIM ONE IS NOT GOOD FOR COOLING.... HERE FOR HELPING PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO GOT CONFUSED WITH LIMITED SPECS WHICH Y50 Does not have GTX 870m and doesn't have IPS, AC 3160 seriously? 1TB with 8? why too confused Lenovo? Gigabyte better quality though not cheap its made for high performance gaming though the color is sexy yellow and the specs it just beast! and stay cool... good lock with Asus N550 or Y50
-
Some Tech Noob Notebook Consultant
Y50 battery isn't replaceable without a lot of work.
More money = more performance
Mind = blown.
Aorus x7 (albeit 17") is slim and powerful, while also having a pretty good cooling system.
Now someone post more new Y50 pictures so i can keep dreaming.itzleo94 likes this. -
Anyone know why the y50 is so cheap in europe?
It's 899 euros for the 4710hq/860m maxwell/8gb ram basic version (the 1350$ us version).
Equal spec'd MSI apache is 1200 euros, pcspecialist/schenker resellers are at 1200 euros as well, asus has the nerve to charge 1400 for the same specs. Seems weird how the y50 has equal pricing as america.
Also whats the difference between a 4710mq and hq? -
I didn't want to comment... but did that guy really just talk about the colour as a factor in comparison?
-
I understand english is your 2nd language, but logic shouldn't be. of course you'll get better cooling, if you are comparing MSI GS/Razer Blade/Gigabyte P34G v2 to a brick. Likewise, I can argue that G750 series kills the the crap out P25W, what's your point?
better performance? have fun with cooling
better quality? very funny
color? where's your backlit keyboard? I can tape the chassis anytime into a different color
AC 3160? p25w is the one to talk with its stock N card?
if you have money, you can always go for better options, if you don't, p25w is nowhere near a better deal than y50 -
i just want to point out that the 899 euro model is listed as "without operating system". Could this be the reason for being 100 euros cheaper?H01D3N likes this.
-
Some Tech Noob Notebook Consultant
899 euros is about 1.5k usd. Big difference
Lenovo is known for good price-performance laptops. -
lol, the design, the specs, everything about it is a knockoff of the Y510p.

I realize English is your second language, so we don't expect your English to be perfect. But allow me to teach you something. In English, punctuation is extremely important. And the most important punctuation is the period, which tells the reader when one sentence ends and the next begins. Your posts read as one giant, run-on sentence and the reader has no way to decipher when you intend to end one thought and begin the next.
The reason people are telling you you sound like an immature teenager is because that style of writing is common among American teenagers who are uneducated and don't understand the importance of punctuation. So it's common when reading a post like that to immediately dismiss the poster as uneducated and immature, because that's the way their writing style makes them appear.
So, bottom line, if you want to post in English and have people take you seriously, learn to use the period at the end of one sentence and then capitalize the first word of the next sentence. Just that one little tip will make your posts infinitely easier to understand, and then people won't assume you're an idiot teenager. -
Thank you,
-
You're thinking pounds.
899eu is about 1220dollars.
http://www.amazon.de/Lenovo-IDEAPAD...TF8&qid=1401384592&sr=8-1&keywords=lenovo+y50
It has windows 8.1 as well. It's ridiculous how it's 300-400 euro less than everyone else with the exact.same.specs.
the 999eu y510p has a 256SSD+1tb 7200rpm hdd which blows away the hybrid, seems tempting but then I'm kind of worried of heat issues and that the 755m SLI can't be overclocked, even though it apparently is "stronger" than the stock 860m maxwell.227 likes this. -

Yes, I think you are right. Most people can't afford MSI or Gigabyte. The Y50 is a good laptop, but not the best bang for your buck. I was just trying to help, that's all. My point is that people who can afford laptops like MSI, Razer Blade, and Gigabyte will buy them because the they are good. Slim ones don't have good cooling. Please help people like me who get confused with the limited specs of the Y50. The Y50 does not have a GTX 870M or IPS. Also it has AC 3160, seriously? 1TB HDD with 8GB SSD partition? Why is Lenovo so confusing with their specs? Gigabyte is better quality but not cheap. It's made for high performance gaming. The color is cool and the specs are great. And it has good cooling. Anyway, good luck with the Asus N550 or Y50.
