Can anybody who has gotten their Y50 throw in a usb drive with ubuntu 14.04 or something on it and see how it works in the live environment?
-
so that's just nvidia boost, I see. also have you opened up the backlid yet and check the heat pipes? is the cpu connected by 2 heat pipes or only 1? and at last is it ok if I borrow your pics and post on other forums? I'll cite you
I am very concerned with the cooling for CPU, as it doesn't look good at all if it's over 90°C... -

My laptop shipped while I was out on vacation. Looks like it should be getting here on the 3rd. I'm excited =)
-
Would someone please define the word "shortly" for me? Thank you!
sorry... just waiting waiting waiting... I'm starting to think maybe this is all a big prank! -

I also ordered a base Y50 direct from Klick that should be here on the 3rd as well. If any of you guys still want something by then (pictures/videos etc) let me know. I bought it for my cousin so I'll have to ask him first
But I currently use a Dell Precision M6600 with an RGB IPS screen if you want comparing to that. Although I'm sure with Pulse's pictures you get the general idea of the laptop already!

Dude, he was running two stress tests SIMULTANEOUSLY. He deliberately maxed the CPU 100%. Holy crap, sir, the temps are fantastic!
-
Has anyone tested the battery life on moderate usage yet? Would 5 hours be a realistic standard for the battery life?
-
even so, a notebook with a standard passing cooling shouldn't go above 95C under double load, that's just a standard, over 95 is certainly below the standard
-
What will use 100% of your CPU and GPU at the same time? Nothing. While gaming it was normal, so I think it is ok.

I apologize in advance for the iPhone recording done by my brother. Here is the long awaited unboxing video:
<iframe width='560' height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/WpF8c7vm-IE" frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe>
I briefly played some CSGO at the end on max settings. Temps were low and the fan made minimal noise.
The sound is incredible on this laptop, too.

I'm saying that double stress mark is simply a standard to measure how good a laptop's cooling is. Over 95C is a little unsatisfactory, but doesn't mean it's bad
-
I've only had it a day, but temps seem fine. Screen is solid, especially after fixing that one setting. Build quality is ok, bit more plastic than I thought, but it doesn't flex or seem cheap. Weight is kept down because of it. Quite a bit of bloatware that I'm steadily trying and removing. This is my first gaming laptop and playing full blown COD on a portable device is just awesome. Still have to download the 360 controller software so I can play Grid. Really want to try that hooked up to my LED TV.

I can't believe I almost actually ordered from Lenovo, I ordered my y50 yesterday and i just got an email saying it shipped out (and its staurday wth), could be here as early as june 4th. Lenovo est. ship date was the 10th.

@pulse123
just a few questions
1. how do you think the speakers compare to gt60?
2. how much did the CPU throttle? how much clock speed did it drop?
3. again, can we have internal pics PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
thanks bro -
Thank you mattstermh
Will you do a video or tell us the temps and fps of Battlefield 4 when you're free?

Yeah, BF4 is installing. It should be done in a couple hours.

I look forward to hear from BF4 benchs and temps! :thumbsup:Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015

Thank you look foward to it
Hows the laptop running so far?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk -
Running real well, can't complain at all.
I will say, though, that I feel that my previous Sager Np7330 was a bit more responsive (and faster). But just slightly.
Certainly does not outweigh the heating issues, noise issues, and awful audio of that laptop, though. -
Dayuuuum this thing is dope. I'm assuming near same temps?
-
Great video sir thanks for the effort. The box is surprisingly slim!Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015

can you post us some pics of the motherboard? PLZZ bro, thanks!
-
Vertical orientation recording, noooooo!!!
Joking, thanks for the uploading
I like how even the USB 3.0 port are red color instead of blue, make it even cooler looking, also the laptop looks very slim and sexy as hell

Cancelled my order will wait for a local reseller to get stock.

Guys, I really like the Y50 and continue to follow the saga. I need some advice though and would appreciate any of your thoughts. Essentially I'm trying to decide if Y50 is my future laptop or if I should be re-thinking based on the list below.
My goal is to get a small/light laptop 14 or 15" but as fast as possible.
I am willing to pay more so lets ignore price in the equation for now.
I want:
- high build quality.
- all SSD storage
- 16GB RAM
- a good graphics card and a great display. I'm not totally set on matte. I want touch.
- I'd prefer 4K but if not close.
- I want to connect a large external panel at least 32" UHD
- Need HDMI out (otherwise Ethernet, at least some USB 3.0 audio jack etc).
- I am not going to game much at all on this machine but I will watch videos.
- I will develop software (compilation and linking will benefit from SSD, RAM and certainly CPU).
- I want latest in wifi (AC)
- I'm comfortable with basic mods like swap SSD in or wifi-card
- I care a great deal about a really nice screen - I've been waiting for the Y50 4K.
- I would prefer no numpad, but can live with one.
- Not sure on internal DVD, lower priority at best
- I like the Lenovo keyboard feel (keys) and have a DELL now which is satisfactory.
Any and all opinions based on the above welcome, thanks in advance for any input.
Now I'm going back to enjoy the Y50 posts
Should I be considering another laptop considering I am willing to pay more and don't 100% need the kick-butt GPU? -
Is there any reseller that sells the top end non-touch model? All the resellers I see are selling the baseline models.
-
You sir can get the 14" Razerblade, it checks pretty much all your boxes.
If you don't mind GPU so much there are a few (but not many) other good screen resolution laptops out there like toshiba though I don't even remember their specs anymore since i so fanatically had y50 in my mind for the past couple of weeks.bitstr3am likes this. -

If you don't care about money, get the new Dell XPS 15. Or wait for the 4k Y50 and spend less. That's pretty much it.
-
I took apart the back to look inside. This will probably be the last set of pictures I'll take of this laptop. Thanks for all the interest and I wish you luck in your laptop purchases.
Overview:
2 heatpipes to GPU, 1 heatpipe to CPU.
2.5" drive bay and cat5 port: (Click spoiler "show" button)
2.5" drive size:
Seems to be 7mm - something to keep in mind when buying SSD's or replacement hard drives. The base model 2.5" is a hybrid drive. Its performance sits between SSD and HDD. Boot times are fast after a couple of restarts, but it still slow down to HDD speeds when you do things it can't predict. If I upgrade anything it would be the 2.5" drive.
Notice the screws are angled - this is to make the flat screws match the curvature of the back lid.
Interesting cat5 port. It has "claws" that extend to grab onto cat5 connectors when plugged in and retract when not in use to stay flush with the curved back. Note that it's not part of the back lid and is made of plastic and textured to look like metal.
-
Hey dude. Is this Ethernet port empty from your previous pictures? If that's so , it's quite a deal breaker.
a EDIT - looks like there is one here in this latest pic. But if you clarify that would be great ! -
hey pulse, do you remember how much the clock speed dropped when the CPU throttled? thanks for the pics btw
-
I didn't remember exactly, but I think it dropped to somewhere around 1-1.5Ghz. It was significant enough to quickly drop the temperature in a couple of seconds. I'd wait to see temperatures from the person with Battlefield 4 for a good real world current gen game test.
-
Yes there is an RJ45 (Ethernet) port.
-
I am wondering if you can replace the original hard disk(7mm) with a 9.5mm 2.5"HDD or SDDBlazeHN likes this.
-
Oh that's great ! I might have missed it. Which side of the laptop is it at ?
-
wait 1-1.5Ghz is that the lowest it dropped to or is that when the temp is stable? the picture of the double stress mark shows that your voltage is about 0.833V and the standard voltage for 4700hq is ~0.879V. so are you sure it dropped that low...? btw thanks dude!
-
In that double stress test image the CPU throttled for a couple of seconds, then increased to max once it reached what it considered a safe temperature. You can tell by the dip in the temperature curve in FurMark. The 0.833V was its voltage at max load - because at the instant that image was taken the CPU wasn't throttling. I'm unsure what its voltage was when throttling, I wasn't paying attention. I did notice in Task Manager that the CPU graph dropped to about 50% during throttle, so that's how I came up with the 1-1.5Ghz number. The normal clockspeed of the 4700HQ is 2.4Ghz. So 2.4/2 ~= 1-1.5Ghz.
-
so you didn't really factor turbo boost right? and 0.833V was the normal voltage for the CPU? thanks again dude!
-
If you allow me a moment fine gentlemans. I propose a toast for the 400 pages of uncertainty, rage, anticipation, stress, disapointment, drama, fights, Sherlock Holmes style'd investigation, debate, heroism, rejoice, epicness, reward and cheer that make this y50 tread.
Cheers!
-
Intel Turbo Boost only happens when you don't need to use all cores (so there's [thermal] room to boost a single core). Prime95 seemed to use all 4 cores, so there was no Turbo Boost happening at all during that test.heibk201 likes this.
-
then what is with 38W TDP when theoretically it should be 47W at full load...? the double stress mark pic shows the tdp to 38W which is why I thought that was the throttled period
