We're only getting one - you'd better order now!

.... we will have a decent amount in stock, but the base model sold out in less than a week after we received them. We expect this to probably be roughly the same as well.

Unfortunately no ETA on those at the moment.

As a side note to everyone - I'm probably the only person on Earth that uses Yahoo Mail anymore .. Yahoo decided that it would randomly delete all the contacts from my Y40/Y50 mailing list I put together. I figured it was a temporary thing as it happened 2 days ago, but it hasn't been fixed. So rather than go about asking everyone to email again, I'll just post updates on this thread every now and then, as long as the mods don't mind.

I was pretty set on a Y410p, but this laptop is too very sexy to not get.
Hopefully my parents can get me this as a grad present. Class of 2014 yay.

I don't think the question was ever answered about the wireless card. What's wrong with the 3160(can't remember off the top of my head) card? I was expecting the wireless card whitelist, but shouldn't the 3160 perform better/the same as the 2230 and 7260-N that were used in the Y410p/y510p(on 2.4ghz)

It's really not that "accepted" by the Lenovo community.

WWAN and wireless card BIOS whitelists? Lenovo, CO... - Lenovo Community

To be fair, it's not just Lenovo that does this. After a lot of research, I found out that Lenovo is not the only OEM that whitelists the BIOS in their laptops. HP/Compaq as well as DELL and other manufacturers built a whitelist of allowed vendor ID's into their BIOS.

Poke around on the Lenovo forum for a little while. Then, you'll be able to tell others to "Teach your grandmother to suck eggs."

So I realize that in all likelihood the GPUs are maxwell, but has anyone actually confirmed it through the actual laptop with both the 2gb and 4gb GPU versions?

For whoever asked: I don't know if it's Maxwell, but the GPU has 640 CUDA cores.

THANK YOU!!!! Please do a BF4 test with fraps on or something, do test it at ultra settings with MSAA on and then off. If Nvidia has the latest drivers out then that is also a must. Much appreciated! 2gb card is indeed maxwell.

I bought a mazer. Yeah, I spelled Mazer. Figured it would hold me for at last 6 months before my stipend comes in from USC. Plan on getting a sensei or an Ec1. They look great. The rest of the money was spent on an external drive and other notebook atuff.

    Hello guys,

After almost 3 months following this thread, i am gladly able to pull the trigger. I am an indonesian, but currently i am travelling to hongkong. Yesterday, in broadway ( one of the biggest electronic retail store here) i saw the advertisement for y50 i think it is differ from the european or american model. But they have 7160 built in from the box. For more clear info check the picture below.

And yes, i bought this one, the i7 . I can't wait tomorrow i am coming back to mu country and try everything this laptop have.

I hope the total cost of the 4k version is around 1800 with ssd. At that price point I would say itd definitely be a good deal. 2000 would be too expensive IMO especially with the crappy ac 3160

yeah i am also looking forward to 4k prices but it would certainly be interesting if additional things get implemented like 7260 ac! which according to some people in here is possible with lenovo!

though honestly i am not too worried about the price, it will cost what it's worth. What I am more concerned about is the fact that even if the prices turn out to be great and even if they were to like implement 7260 ac and what not, the screen will most probably be glossy :-/

which is totally understandable but sucks for those who take the 4k screen just for the ips panel it has and really only just want matte ips screen

here's to hoping that there will be two versions of 4k, touch and non-touch, with touch being glossy and non-touch matte!

What is so attractive about a 4k screen to warrant such a steep price increase? Most people will probably find the icons/text too small or scale up just for regular use, the GPU is not powerful enough for any meaningful 4k gaming and even some of the more popular software programs out there do not support such high resolutions. So why are so many people so excited about the 4k panel on this particular laptop?

    like stated already:

because of the speculation that the upcoming y50 4k version laptop will probably have an IPS/PLS panel

the currently released y50's are a dealbreaker to anyone who does not want a TN panel laptop

    that's why mostly

if you can look at this screen and tell me in the face you see no problem with it then i understand your ignorance:
    http://i.imgur.com/z1AlnJG.jpg

if lenovo were to offer an ips/pls panel y50 on 1920x1080 resolution that would be THE laptop of the year

notice how the color green of the stock-app box at the bottom half of the display looks like on the tilted TN screen compared to the color green store-app box at the top half of the display

here is how it should look like tilted on an ips screen:

For some it's hype, for others it's the lack of and IPS screen on the 1080p model. I think the price is going to be too high for many though. $1800 would be too much in my opinion and would make the competition look like a bargain. The GS60 3K is $2000 and would be really hard to pass up if their prices were that high.

Yeah but with laptops, its usually very personal use and you can always tilt the screen to where the viewing angles are not a problem. I don't know, unless there is a major difference in display quality all together then personally, that high of a jump in price is not worth it, especially on this laptop. Then again, the picture quality might be a lot better on an IPS panel, in that case I might consider it, though I highly doubt it as lenovos TN panels are usually pretty high quality.

that's like saying who needs washing machines when you can wash by hand or
why do we need cars when we can walk or
why have a mouse when you can use the trackpad or
why have a 15" screen when you can have a 13" screen

I don't think the personal viewing experience will be all that much better - even in 4k. Movies and most games are still going to be 2k, so all you're going to see is sharper text, pictures and icons. Sure the viewing angles *might* be better, but if you don't care about that then IPS is going to look very similar to Lenovo's TN panel(assuming they use the same screen as last year - it's the only one I've seen). Even if the 4k screen is IPS, there's still a chance the experience is going to be worse. Some IPS screens are still prone to horrible viewing angles, IPS glow and backlight bleed. If Lenovo doesn't cheap out, that might be what people are going to have to deal with.

    Um, no.

There is a steep price increase when it comes to the 4k display on this laptop, whether such a steep price increase for the supposedly described benefits mentioned here is worth it is a totally legitimate question, especially within the framework of a "budget" gaming laptop. There very well maybe diminishing returns for the probable price hike.

It's not just a matter of preference. 4k is a new technology and costs a lot to have. It's also kind of pointless until more software actually uses it. So for now, it's a tradeoff because you're paying a lot of money for something that looks pretty, but you probably don't need and you'll have to deal with early adopter issues like scaling problems.

you are missing the point, i don't want a 4k display, i want an ips display and the only way of getting it through the y50 package is by taking the 4k display version

now sure you have to pay a premium for that, but like i said it is indeed like arguing why buy a washing machine when you can wash by hands - a washing machine also costs but gives you benefits

one thing that you guys are right about is the quality of the supposedly upcoming y50's ips display as not all are necessarily good but i think since they were out for some time now that a NEW one should be of a good quality especially being on a company's 2014 flagship laptop

again: i am willing to pay a hefty premium for an ips panel and would've prefered it came as 1080p but since it's only supposedly coming in UHD then i might as well take the UHD while i'm at it and use it at 1080p resolution

There is no going around it, unless you take another laptop like GS60 which i don't want due to it's gamer-looking design (i need mine to be take-to-work play-at-home and i don't want it to look too flashy when i take it to work) and i don't want the asus N550JK cuz of other reasons etc

Don't assume the screen will be great just because it's the company's flagship product or you might be in for a letdown. The razer blade has mediocre viewing angles and some apparent ips glow. I personally expected more and was a little disappointed.

Is anyone else having a problem with the Wifi card? Also does anyone think that the stock HDD is slow? I'm not sure I want to put in SSD in it because I would want something atleast 512GB in size and those run about $400..

Alright folks - I'm trying to find why the 7260ac Wifi card wouldn't work for the Y50. In the hardware manual:

    Lenovo Y50 Hardware Maintenance Manual

on page 91 #12, it clearly lists the 7260 which means it should work. Not sure why it wouldn't. Am I missing something here? Perhaps Timothyz had a different version? Can someone please confirm?

Forget about the whitelist. They only work on the Thinkpad laptops. Just wait for a modded BIOS so you can get the 7260AC.

Can you please provide a link or evidence? Sorry, I'm a "trust, but verify" kinda person. Sure, I can just go out and buy it and try it out, but since I don't even have my laptop yet, it'll be a long while to wait. I'm just hoping I can get some insight on whether I should even be looking at purchasing the 7260 card and hang on to it while I wait for Lenovo to get their act together on shipping.

How much does the IPS 15.6 1080p matrix cost? Isn't it cheaper to buy it seperately and then replace the crappy tn on your y50? Than pay extra big buck for the 4k.

Question for you knowledgeable folks: in your experience, how much more/less reliable is Lenovo's internal shipping estimate system versus the online order status page?

A couple reps (one online and another on phone) both quoted me a 6/17 shipping date instead of the 6/30 shipping date posted online. Funny thing is that the 6/17 shipping date was previously posted online as well but got updated/extended last week. Is the online status date controlled by the manufacturing warehouse (meaning more accurate)?

    Thanks folks!

Speaking of pages... we went through 30 pages in the past day. I'm thinking a Y50 Owner's and Information Thread could me made, and then this thread could be used for potential buyers? Just an idea, it would be easier for people to stay on top of the info.
