Yeah, I was looking into digital-to-analog converters but sometimes they can get expensive. The quality difference is unbelievable though. I was thinking about this one- Amazon.com: FIIO E17 Alpen USB DAC Headphone Amplifier: Electronics[referrer| Google[type|link[postId|483393503[asin|B0070UFMOW[authorId|5716553178370339807

It's definitely something I will have to look into once I get my Y50. Thanks for the info, I'll check out the Schiit you mentioned!

The FiiO gets pretty good reviews, a lot of people like it. I use a Schiit Modi/Magni combo for my desktop and then a Schiit BiFrost/Emotiva Mini-X with my laptop. That system is bigger, but I use it with speakers, rather than headphones. Anyways, I've found the Modi to be awesome, though it was really hard for me to choose that versus a FiiO. Some of the FiiO models also are both Amp/DAC combo, which if you travel a lot is probably much more convenient. I would definitely spring for something like that if I needed a more mobile setup.

They can get expensive, you're right. I find it is usually a good investment though, laptop on-board sound is often pretty bad IMO.

What are the odds that Lenovo ships the 4K model with Displayport? Given HDMI 3840x2160 throughput limit of 30Hz, if they included Displayport that same resolution can stream at 60Hz.

I suppose this is unlikely as there may not be space for both HDMI and Displayport and I don't see them dropping HDMI and HDMI 2.0 probably won't appear on real laptop hardware until next year.

    1. If you want a Y50 with the 7260 AC 20200552 card, just call Lenovo sales. You need to call them for a special manufacturing build order. They do not have these cards on their Web sales site. It's that simple. Call Lenovo, and you can get the card you want, installed by the factory.

    2. You can't find that 7260 AC 20200552 card, for sale anywhere on the internet! Actually I got a hit at 7260 AC - Toppreise.ch Price comparison Switzerland leading to https://www.gmce.ch/fr/330000331000/784403-7260-2x2acbt-pcie-m2-wlan-v2.html (note the ref " Référence : 20200552") I don't know if it's legit, as my French ain't what it used to be. :rolleyes2:

    3. I don't have any knowledge about the 3160 card. It may be good, or bad. Still, I think you should at least give it a chance. It may suit your needs. I only know how my stock Intel Wireless-N 1000 performs in my Y470. I've never had a problem with it. Of course, I'm stupid, and kept the Intel ProSet software. Most other users think ProSet is some kind of bloatware.

    4. If you really don't like the 3160, you need to mod the BIOS, to make an "after market, off the self, non FRU 20200552" card work. Also, it will take a few months for the "BIOS modders" to get the Y50 mods up on their sites.

    5. Read this thread for information about the 7260 card: http://forum.notebookreview.com/networking-wireless/716325-intel-7260-a.html

I know that looks aren't everything, but both the Modi and the Magni have a really nice clean look to them. Plus, Schiit is one of the really high-rated companies out there. I don't need a really mobile setup, so that could definitely be an option. I use my ATH-M50 headphones most of the time, so quality is something that I value because good headphones + bad SQ = bad music experience.
One of the reasons that I went for the Y50 was because I needed the dGPU for some audio spectrum renderings in AE for some EDM artists out there. Just tying it into the thread topic :)

    cbautis2,
Exactly where do you "employ/use" your speed?

I'm really not trying to be snide, but most users don't have a NAS, or LAN, and their ISP doesn't give them anything greater than that "72.2 Mbps" you've been snickering about. :rolleyes2:

I've said it before, modding the BIOS, just so you can install an after market card, to get a speed that you can't use, seems to be pointless. Now, if it's a matter of connection reliability, that's another thing.

I just don't want any new Y50 owners, screaming about losing their warranty, because they modded their BIOS to install a different wireless card, and now they can't send their broken machine, back to Lenovo for some other problem. :wideeyed:

I sold my Y500 to get the Y50. I wanted a slimmer form factor and better performance for gaming, but also I wanted touch. I hated the trackpad on the Y500 so I'm hoping it better than the Y500's.

Those speeds are theoretical speeds (the one you see on wireless connection status). The Intel 3160 according to Intel has a theoretical max speed of 433 Mbps on wireless-ac routers: Intel® Wireless Product Selection Guide

This is because it only has 1 spatial stream so it doesn't take advantage of spatial multiplexing ( How Stuff Works – 802.11n and Spatial Multiplexing | WiFi Jedi.com) which multiples the rate by the number of antennas attached in the adapter. The 7260, 1000, 2230, 6235 have 2 spatial streams while 6300 has 3 streams which requires 3 antennas to achieve 450 Mbps (150 Mbps/stream on 40 MHz width)

See this site and scroll down to "Comparison of 802.11ac Data Rates to Other 802.11 PHYs" to see the theoretical speed from different 802.11 protocol and the spatial streams
    http://chimera.labs.oreilly.com/boo...ml#comparison_of_ac_data_rates_to_other__phys

On wireless N, the max theoretical for 1 stream at 20 MHz width is 72.2 Mbps. I believe the 20 MHz width at 2.4 GHz frequency is the most common configuration people use since WiFi certified routers are mandated to drop the 40 MHz to 20 MHz when an interfering channel is detected: Bye Bye 40 MHz Mode in 2.4 GHz - Part 1 - SmallNetBuilder
Since Centrinos and 7260 have 2 streams, they can double that number to 144 Mbps. Thus if you have a WiFi certified N300 router, the 3160 can only get 72.2 Mbps while 7260 gets 144 Mbps on a "typical" location. On RF interference free location, 40 MHz mode will take effect and 3160 gets 150 while 7260 gets 300. The same thing applies to wireless-ac but on 80 MHz channel width. There are no consumer router with 160 Mhz width as of now.

Here's where all this theoretical speed gets translated to real speed (throughput).

In a "typical" environment, the maximum transfer rate you can get from the theoretical speeds is 50 - 55% (you can use a search engine to see some articles regarding this). The lab environment (absolute no interference and minimum noise, it goes up to 75%). That means only 40 Mbps of internet speed or LAN you can get from a typical wireless configuration and about 70 - 75 Mbps on a 5 GHz wireless N network at home environment. About 200 Mbps is the best you can get out of the 3160AC which is on par to the Intel 6300 in 5 GHz 40MHz N network.

To see a review of similar 3160AC performance (same 1 stream) check out this review of Netgear A6100 WiFi USB Mini Adapter AC600 Dual Band: Netgear A6100 WiFi USB Mini Adapter AC600 Dual Band Review & Rating | PCMag.com

the first 3 letters of the model number determines the manufacturer. a few softwares can determine the model number but that's pointless in my opinion. From the reviews of the i5 models, both panels are about the same, chi-mei is slightly yellowish. the point is, if you can't stand TN, both will suck, if you are fine with TN, then both have no problem

Damn, thanks for the video but those FPS seem way too low for a gtx 860m, it is supposed to be near gt755m sli in performance, and with a gt755m sli you can easily get close to 55 FPS with ultra settings and 4x anti-aliasing. Hopefully its not optimized yet, I can even get around 50 FPS on my y580 with gtx660m at medium!

pretty unlikely because then you would have to modify your motherboard a little bit and displayport was never the spec sheet. I don't think lenovo is nice enough to consider it.

Good god that's technical stuff right there^.
Really, you only benefit from the speed of ac cards on ac routers, right? So how many people would you say even use 802.11ac as opposed to, say, 802.11n? Maybe 40% of wireless users have an ac router. (Just a guess.)

He means optimized as in changing GPU settings to make games run faster.

What GeForce Experience does is pretty much tweak your settings. With some games, it will overestimate your GPU power and make things actually run slower. How to Optimize Your PC Games' Graphics Settings in One Click

Read this article about GPU settings in games.
How to optimize and test a videocard

Personally, I'm not a fan of AA (anti-aliasing). I think you just lose FPS for a barely noticeable graphics difference. It's personal preference. If you want to increase FPS, turn off AA. That's basically how I "optimize" my graphics.

Both router and adapter must support 80 MHz channel width to get the wireless AC. If the wireless router can't do 80 MHz, then your wireless-ac adapter will only connect to 40 MHz width which 100% of N routers that are sold today can perform. That's the only major difference between N and AC. Minor differences include the MCS 8 and 9 (i.e. 256-QAM, optional feature) which were not present in N. That's why you see router's like Belkin "AC1000" which is basically 300 Mbps N 2.4 GHz + 650 Mbps 5 GHz AC (2 streams 80 MHz 64-QAM, missing the 256QAM because it's optional) or Netgear AC1450 which is a 3 stream router than can do 450 Mbps 2.4 GHz N + 975 Mbps (64-QAM). There are more differences but it's too technical for me to understand.

Hope this helps people when buying a cheaper AC routers.

As for the red question, I doubt that 40% of people with routers have wireless-ac. In my location, out of 44 radios my Intel 7260 can detect, only 1 has AC. You can probably see more AC radios in wealthier places.

IMO, if the Y50 comes with the 3160AC, I wouldn't risk bricking it by flashing a modded BIOS just to get the 7260AC. Having a 5 GHz capability is enough for me since it's less prone to interference thus allowing faster speed and wider channels and most importantly, stable and lag free connection.

Wireless Driver and router firmware are a different matter though. No matter how good the environment is, if the driver and router firmware is buggy, expect poor WiFi performance and stability regardless of bands.

since you guys are all talking about the pricing for 4k, lemme just put the specs for toshiba p50t the 4k one for price comparison. I'm not comparing any performance b/c we all know you can't compare r7 M265x with 860m.
    toshiba p50t 4k
    4k sharp IGZO IPS touch
    i7-4700HQ
R7 M265X (trololololol amd, can this even beat 750m?)
    16GB DDR3L RAM
1TB hybrid drive (didn't specify cache but I assume same as y50?)
    7260 AC
    optical drive

this is $1800 or $1600 after discount, but let's just say this is $1800

the non-4k FHD version has similar specs except with only 12GB of DDR3L, 7260N and GT740M, with $1450

4gb of DDR3L is like $50 on the market, wifi card is about $15 of difference, GPU...? supposedly m265x is about 750m, and amd is known to be cheaper than nvidia, so let's just say it costs $35 more to make things easier. after that, we still get around $250 of difference between the FHD and UHD version.

ok, supposedly, let's make that how much it would cost to upgrade from FHD to UHD

let's take this FHD model of the y50 here:
860m with 4gb of vram (very likely to come in standard for 4k because more vram actually helps)
16gb DDR3L (price bundles ya know)
    4700hq or 4710hq, doesn't matter, only $10 of difference
    1tb SSHD
    this one costs $1350

since we are almost certain that the 4k display will have a PLS panel, let's put it this way.
samsung claims that PLS will be up to 15% cheaper to produce than IPS, and let's assume it will be 15% cheaper

    with everything else the same,
this means the upgrade from FHD to UHD, if we use the example of $250 from toshiba model, will cost $212.5 more
thus, we can estimate the base model of 4k to be around $1560

HOWEVER, keep in mind that toshiba uses IGZO IPS, which is more expensive than normal IPS, and lenovo is pretty competitive with its pricing, we can expect prices lower than what I estimated above. if we are lucky, we might even be able to see the base model of 4k to be like $1500 or even lower. if this is case, then we can talk about affordable 4k experience, otherwise, glhf

Favor to ask - can someone create a "Y50 In Stock Thread"? I can't create threads as a retailer, and it'd be a good place to put not only when we have a new Y50 in stock, but people can post where it's in stock anywhere else as well .. so not looking to create a thread just for ourselves, but we would be able to make use of it as well and people could subscribe to it .. and again, when other retailers start to get stock or users find good prices, they could post in the thread .. I think also that will reduce some of the posts in this thread and help keep it cleaner.

There is a reason that a "retailer" can't create a thread. It's to prevent this type of "marketing".

    Read the forum rules.

Well at least I read it that way.

It depends if the Y50 has the NGFF form factor like the Yoga 2 Pro. If it's mini pcie. It might but I'm on the other side of the coin since those FRUs are for Thinkpads. You have to try it to see.

CPU Temps hit 89C with OC'ing at +135 core and 280 mem w/ AA on in CSGO and mostly maxed out settings.

Throttlestop was at 34T. Brought it down to 30T and temps stayed at 84C.

One issue I have been having is the game will consistently freeze for a full 2 seconds every few rounds... not sure why.

I've read the forum rules inside and out - I don't see anything wrong with this suggestion. People keep asking in this thread about finding it in stock somewhere, if other retailers are stocking it, what we have in stock or incoming, etc - and we are giving the users of this forum an excellent, special price that is available no where else. I know it's a fine line between "marketing" and whatnot, and I've been in communication with mods about this as well. I'm not asking for a "Klick Online Y50 Thread". Creating an in stock thread for this item, based on the hundreds of comments and questions people are asking about where they can find it, when they are shipping, if other retailers have it, etc - would again, accomplish what I laid out in my prior post - keep this main thread a bit cleaner, and provide a place for everyone to post where they found it and where stock is at. Again, just trying to help out. If not, no big deal - will keep answering questions in this thread.

If I can get my hands on a y50 with 4k along with the 512 GB ssd with a "custom ordered" 7260 (someone said you can call lenovo?) For 1800 or less, I'm sold. This is contingent on the 4gb GPU being maxwell (95% confident it will be) and the 4k panel being PLS (this is still up in the air)

Also, wasn't there something about a Toshiba "p55t" model with 4k as well? That one was supposed to start at just 1499 if I recall

considering the FHD ssd version is only $100 more, it might as well be possible. the problem here is not the cost of 4k from samsung, since we know upgrading from FHD to UHD isn't ridiculously high and that's with IGZO IPS, but rather how aggressive lenovo will be with their pricing.

admittedly, lenovo did seem to get somewhat cocky after y510p, thinking people will take their crap regardless of price, and that wasn't helped with the sales of y50. hopefully lenovo takes some serious consideration and keep 4k within reasonable price range

EDIT: to pulse123, I hope you don't mind when I used your pics for my review on another forum. I asked you first but you didn't give me a response, so I used it and I cited you clearly. sorry for that and I hope you are fine w/ it!

Another thing I'd like to know is what exact model the ssd is. Someone way back in this thread said its sandisk from a rep, and the only 512gb sandisk ssd I know of is the x210, but I don't think anyone takes what the reps say seriously these days...

You know how people say the perfect or more accurate downscale from 4k is 900p? Well what is the similarly best downscale from 1080p? How does the formula work?

Accurate downscale refers usually to an exact number of pixel ratio, for instance pixel doubling. 900p is pixel-halved from 3K. Both 1080p and 720p can be scaled with an exact ratio from 4K. As for 1080p, the next lowest resolution would be 1920/2 = 960 x 1080/2 = 540, also known as quarter HD, qHD.

Does anyone know if Lenovo will deliver to Japan? I was planning on possibly ordering one once I get back to the States this summer, but it's looking like by July there may still be difficulty getting the exact model I want. Might be easier for me if I just wait a few months and have it shipped to me here.

Thanks for the response. However, I wasn't wondering about the manufacturers were chi-mei/innolux, auo, or boe. I was curious how you knew that the non touch were cmi and auo, and that the touch models were boe.

    Thanks.

I can't even watch a high bitrate 4K sample on my desktop computer (i7) without stuttering. Can the y50 even decode heavy 4K properly? My understanding is that there is no gpu hardware decoding for h265 yet. I did see hardware decoding options for 4k in vlc but ticking those boxes isn't enough for smooth decoding...

    Edit:
    Here's the 4k sample I'm refering to

So for those really looking to upgrade to the ac 7260, there are actually quite a few vendors online that sell the card with the specific FRU of 20200552 which should not give you the unauthorized card message. One example is

    http://www.eafsupplychain.com/Product/LV-20200552

If you search in Google "Lenovo 20200552" you'll find some more, but I think that one is the cheapest. I'm assuming it'll still be very expensive though for people in the US though :(

It depends on the hardware, the player , the decoder and the setting. I use MPC-HC with MadVR on my 4K laptop.
I have not try any h265 video yet, but 4K video with bitrate up to 60Mbps can playback almost smoothly with after proper tweak.

One thing I think you forgot to include in your calculations is the price premium for touch. The model you're talking about with a touch screen is currently $1399 after the discount. And we know that the 4K version of the Y50 will be offered with touch. I don't think we know whether they'll offer it in a non-touch version.

I was going to point out what Xepher2014 pointed out. That Toshiba has a P50t model with 4K, 4710HQ, 12 GB RAM, and a Blu-ray Writer for $1499.

So if Toshiba can sell that version for $1500, and Lenovo wants to be competitive, then they're going to need to be probably no more than $1600 for a similarly-equipped model.

Thanks for the tips. Didn't know about madVR. I tried it with mpc hd x86 + latest lav filters, but I get the same results (stuttering / frame drop) as with vanilla vlc with the sample provided earlier. Oh well...

1600 for the lowest possible 4k model perhaps, but remember that the r9 m265 doesn't hold a candle to the 860m...

Ugh if only we could know definitively if the 4k screen will be IPS/PLS or not. That's the only reason I'm waiting for the 4k :(

On an entirely different note, I don't see any reason why anyone would get the dell xps 15 that people were hyping a few pages back over the 4k Toshiba p50t that costs 1499
