Anyone saw the newly announced Asus NX500?

4K, IPS with wide gamut, display port, 850m ddr5, quadcore i7, huge battery... If it's anywhere close to affordable I'll go with that one and gladly take the excellent screen and battery over the slightly worse GPU and lack of numpad.

Hands-on with ASUS' Zenbook NX500: The MacBook Pro meets its match

It seems to be a MacBook Air/Pro competitor, so I'm expecting the price to be over $2000 USD.

In this news (google translated from italian) here they talk about a 2000€ price tag, but it's just their guess. It's 19mm thick, so heat might be a problem.
Another new laptop that looks very nice, although with a VERY high price, is the Aorus X3Plus. 3200x1800 13.9" screen, i7 quad, 870m, 73 Wh double msata for 2200$ and up

Anyway, on topic, on the amazon.de listing there is a spec sheet: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/A19P%2BweeVJS.pdf (4k 512GB model, 1499€ ;)
Under the display section, it says In Plane Switching, which should be IPS right?

The only thing that I am waiting for is someone to confirm the 4GB is Maxwell (I know that there's been loads of discussion about this but I want to be absolutely 100% sure and not be disappointed if I get it and find out its Kepler).

On a separate note, does anyone else get the impression that this thread is going stagnant little by little. I used to log on and be like "Yes! New information and discussion and pics and possibility of this and that" but now whenever I log in its just like "Ugh. Screen. IPS. Laptop comparison". idk Why I feel this way but I just do.

I need some opinion and help on my purchase.
Should I get the base Touch Model with 2GB GTX860m or the non Touch with 4GB GTX860m?

I don't have experience with a touch screen for a laptop but I'm intrigued on how much will be used in everyday use. I will using he laptop for gaming and photo editing (Battlefield 4, Crysis 3, Warframe, Titanfall, Photoshop, Sony Vegas, Youtubes). I don't care about RAM and hard drive since I'll be adding those in myself.

It's kind of personal preference, but I believe a lot of us went without touch screen for one of the following reasons: we don't actually use it in real world setting (the laptop doesn't fold back, so you can't treat it like a tablet), it likely decreases battery life, it weighs .5 lbs more, desktop programs still aren't all optimized for it, and it's a glossy screen not matte (which you may prefer).

Ahhh sadly i cant fork out 2k for it, i think in terms of price and performance ratio y50 still takes it, even with the avg screen.

    2 Questions for owners:

    1. What is the battery life like
    a) Movies/Gaming
    b) Not gaming/browsing/work/etc..

    2. What is the performance of the Wifi, I do not care so much about AC, I don't even own an AC router, let alone have enough bandwidth to use it (I only have 50mb down/10up), I don't network in my house much via wireless (almost completely wired). I just want to know if the card has been dropping at all and/or has good signal.

    yes - should be IPS.
One line above it is also written "UHD IPS".
The 2k models haven written there "FHD TN".

So at least the german 4k model seems to get an IPS panel :)

Well...now I'm torn. If the 4k model is coming out "soonish" with an IPS display and an integrated Blu-ray drive (don't know if anyone noticed, but the Lenovo site, or at least the mobile version specifies "integrated" now, so I assume a super-thin slot loader is confirmed) for under $2k, I may want to cancel my order and get the better one...sigh...decisions, decisions!

BTW, does everyone feel comfortable about temps or has the hive decided that the simul-test done several pages ago that resulting in throttling is still scary?

on the model description from the manual, the Chi-mei and AUO panels have AG while the BOE one has G. AG means anti-glare and G means glare. since it's touch model, then it will most likely to glossy and therefore the BOE panel

in china the i5 non-touch models also come with either chimei or AUO

They always said "integrated DVD drive." That doesn't mean that they will actually have an integrated drive. In fact, we have pretty much confirmed that it will be the exact opposite and will be a bundled DVD drive.

Hi guys! My dad and I managed to fix my current laptop screen, so woot! The problem did indeed seem to be with the screen wire, which we unplugged and plugged back in, though we also blew out all of the dust and cleaned all of the internals to be sure. We also taped the flimsy plastic band on my lid so the wire shouldn't get unstuck again. Not the most elegant solution, maybe, but it's working great so far.

As a result, I decided to just stick with my Lenovo Canada order of the top Y50 model (with SSD). Hopefully it actually ships on June 18th like Lenovo promised. The Dell XPS 15 looked pretty damn attractive as well and I very strongly considered picking one of those up instead. But I was ultimately turned off too much by a few things, most importantly the coil whine. It seems that 90% of owners have this coil whine issue with the XPS and it is basically unfixable. For such an premium computer to have an annoying whine that even cheap computers don't have is ridiculous. 2 years down the road, I would probably regret not waiting 1 more month to not have to deal with the whining. Dell is apparently working on the issue and should have non-whining motherboards in the 2015 version. That is sure to be a very, very nice computer but I definitely can't wait a whole year for a new machine. I don't even want to wait a month. Add onto that the smaller keyboard without a numpad, a significantly weaker graphics card, and only 32GB SSD instead of 512GB SSD (on the only affordable, discounted model I was looking at), and the Y50 seems like a better option regardless of screen quality. The pictures and reviews posted in this thread really made me feel a lot better too. The screen seems good enough quality for me and is an upgrade over my current screen. And the lack of overheating or loud noise are great too, especially compared with the XPS' whining. If it turns out the 4GB GTX860 I ordered is Kepler I may get pissed and bail but it almost certainly is Maxwell. Anyways, I should know soon enough. Thanks to the guys who helped me make the decision.

I am a bit confused as well. I currently have a y580 which I love, but it's warranty is about to run out in a few months, I have already extended the warranty once so they won't let me do it again. Should I just stick to the y580 and run it to the ground? Or do you guys think I can get a decent resale price if I put it up on ebay or something? y580 is still a pretty powerful laptop, If I can offload it for a decent price then I probably will purchase the y50.

Called Lenovo this morning to check on my order for the baseline 4710HQ model, which I placed on May 15th with estimated 10-12 days to ship. They said the shipping date has officially been pushed back to June 29th.

Generally, I feel there's few situations where you'll max out both components to see those kind of temperatures. I feel comfortable with it, personally, since I didn't expect a ridiculously well-cooled laptop given the form factor. I wouldn't overclock anything in this laptop without watching it carefully, but I'm comfortable with it at stock.

I don't think lenovo will offer 4k touch only because it's not a good marketing strategy and back in the original poster, yes the one from january, it said 4k will be offered in both touch and non-touch so I don't understand why they wouldn't. it would be stupid if they don't, and I think we know lenovo wouldn't want to lose potential buyers here when it's only a matter of adding a digitizer.

@xepher2014, thanks for that reminder, makes my calculation even easier then. if it only costs $50 more to do all those upgrades (blu-ray, graphics, etc.) from the $1450 FHD model to the 4k one, then we might as well see the 4k models to be $50-100 more than normal models. it all depends on lenovo's competitiveness

EDIT: after seeing the zenbook nx500, did no one see the problem here?
core i7 + 850M? either they would have to be really chill with the 850M or we can be certain it would be an undervolted processor like i7-4500U. yes I know maxwell is cool, but keep in mind this is 19mm, even thinner than GS60

Aw man, I hope my June 18th shipping date doesn't get pushed back. :(
Klick doesn't have the SSD model, which I really want. And I slightly prefer the Canadian keyboard to the American one for the larger Enter key.
Hopefully since I was one of the first to order from Lenovo Canada the backlog won't affect me too much.

Is this some sort of update to the y50 (and also evidence that the y70 exist) ?

The size seems to match the y50 ( aside from missing a 2 before 63.4 )

Yeah its pretty weaksauce. So I started a "science experiment" and placed an order for the baseline 4700 model today, which has an estimated 5-7 days to ship. Going to wait for one to ship and then cancel the other one.

News from Lenovo - this comes from manufacturing so it "should" be reliable (but don't hold me to that!) - literally just got this info a few minutes ago ..

There will be three UHD Y50 models for the US website - ONE UHD Y50 model should hit the Lenovo website mid-late next week (not decided which one, nor do we know how much of a lead shipping time there will be). The other two will be in 3-4 weeks time.

    Models offered:

    i7/8G/1TB+2GB Gfx
    i7/16G/1TB+4GB Gfx
    i7/16G/512GB SSD+4GB Gfx

I have NO other details, no info on pricing, etc. Just giving a heads up.

You're not worried about delays or annoyances or horror stories with returns? I'm paranoid about sending a laptop to return, having UPS lose it on the way, and then ending up with no money, no laptop, and UPS and Lenovo both saying it's not their problem, lol. I've heard some scary tales. :p

It looked strange that they would already leak a new model when the current model has just started shipping

I doubt these will be available by then - I'm guessing they will still have a 3-4 week shipping time once they are announced, so I'd bet these would be received in July .. I anticipate getting at least 2 of the 3 models, but a lot will depend on pricing as well. I'd say the 512GB version is pretty much a definite that we'll get.

Ooohh. This brings back the speculated Y70 I've been hearing about. So it looks like Lenovo didn't trash the Y70 but is preparing it with the next architecture with Broadwell. You mentioned a better graphics card as well so I'm speculating a GTX870m+ will be in it. I doubt it will ship this year, maybe Q2 of 2015 at least.

Ah. I would have come to the same conclusion. However, it appears that the CMI, AUO, and BOE models are all listed as "AG", presumably meaning "anti-glare."

    y50LCDparts2.PNG

You got me excited about the touch exclusively being BOE.

Is there any way that the existing Y50 owners can verify which LCD model is in their device?

    Thanks.

Razer blade and ghost pro cool an 870m + i7 just fine and they are similar thickness. I'm sure an 850m will be ok. Chances are the MBP refresh will have that same card.

I've been looking at the y40 and y50 for a long while now, to upgrade from my dell studio 1558 which is about 4 years old.

I had some questions and was hoping someone might know the answers:

How is the screen quality? I was very happy with my the one on my dell and hoping to get an IPS this time but if not, if it is at least as good as what I currently have I would be happy (15.6” Full High Definition (1080p) High Brightness LED Display with TrueLife)

How is the SSD? I am looking at the 512gb SSD version, but wanted to make sure it was of good quality, otherwise I might as well get the cheaper version and buy an SSD elsewhere. In my current setup, I have replaced the optical drive by a second HDD, would there be any hope of doing such a thing on the y50 that has an integrated optical drive??

I will mainly use this laptop to do everything at home and sometimes on the go. I don't play games but often do image post-processing.

Any recommended sources to buy the laptop in Canada?

That's not what I was getting at. My point is they operate just fine. I know they get warm. Realistically, they both don't really get all that hot though - I guess it depends on your toleration. My point was, I really doubt asus is undervolting their expensive cpu to an Ultrabook level just to keep it cool. They should be able to cool them both just fine, as is.

N15P-GX seems to be the Kepler version of GTX860m

Since all of you know that Y50 comes with Maxwell, well, I prefer to believe that the table is fake.

The screen will be at least as good as your current one, likely a bit better (making assumptions from Dell's WLED TrueLife's that I've seen, but I don't know the color gamut of your notebook.). Everyone who has received one so far has been content with the screen. But you can see for yourself with the pcis on pages 388 & 390.

Alternatively, if you'd like to wait till next week, possible IPS 4K panels should be going up as options. They'll take 3-4 weeks to ship, though, so earliest anyone will have one if is likely mid-July.

No one has one of the models with an SSD yet, but I believe someone said it was a SanDisk. We still can't confirm that model of the y50 has an integrated drive (rather than an external), but if it does, it's likely a small slot loader.

As for Canada, you'll have to either get it from Lenovo (all keyboards there are bilingual, if that matters to you) or ask Klick (3rd part retailer, [email protected]) to ship northward.

    Thank you very much.

    I'm still undecided though! lol

I guess I'll try to wait a bit longer and see the reviews. The y40 + 512ssd + 16gb ram for $1299 is pretty tempting but that is a lot of $. Either that or the y50 base model which I'd upgrade later on.

If I understand correctly, none of the available models have backlit keyboards (yet)?

my bad then, I misread it as G for some reason.

the point is asus is probably gonna stick with the safe way and put something i7-4500U instead of a standard voltage cpu.

razer blade and ghost pro are admitted to be briefcase nukes so yeah, of course they are operating fine, but they do get hotter than others. if asus wants to risk it then sure they can do w.e. they want, but I'm saying that asus isn't gonna risk their top end model to be another nuke

All y50 models have adjustable backlit keyboards. Only some y40s have backlit keyboards; I don't know which, or if any of the available ones do (I haven't looked; y40 thread might know).

As a side note, Lenovo has said you void your warranty if you place an SSD yourself. That said, there's no warranty sticker on the HDD, so if you do replace it, you can just swap the 1 TB it comes with back in before you send it off for warranty. Klick was offering a discount to NotebookReview Forum Members on the y50, though they're currently out of stock of the base model till next week. Email Brian about it.
