Some people have said that replacing anything will void the entire warranty, while some have stated that only the part you have replaced will have the warranty voided. Which is it :l

Lol, I've been reading the Dell XPS 15 thread and the amount of problems people are having with it is ridiculous. Coil whine, USB ports not working properly, screen freezing, image retention/ghosting, and more...I'm really glad I didn't bail on the Y50 in favour of the XPS, haha. Sure the screen won't be as nice but overall I should have a much better experience with the Y50 when I finally get it. Judging from early reviews, it looks very solid.
-
It's already confirmed that asus put an i7-4712hq in it.
It's interesting why so many assume those two laptops get so hot. I personally tried both of them and they really aren't that bad. According to the thermal scans, it looks like the y50 has more hot spots than the new razer blade. Someone on this thread even mentioned the keys getting hot, which the RB doesn't have an issue with. I guess people just blindly assume that thinner laptops equal more heat and good engineering isn't a factor? I wish I had a y50 on hand so I could put the speculation to rest.

They may not get too terribly hot to the touch, but the GS60 Pro definitely gets hot enough to throttle badly right out of the box.
-
That's because it was built that way. The PSU on both units is 150W and limits the card from operating at it's full potential. If they had a higher wattage PSU, they would probably hit thermal limits which is undesireable. Both chose that over being bottlenecked by the 860M. It's merely a design preference. Don't get me wrong, I agree the GPU gets hotter, but I don't think the lap experience was all that bad because the cooling systems were pretty efficient. After looking at the y50 reviews, I can only wonder if that subwoofer is absorbing excess heat somehow. There's an excessive amount of heat being trapped on the left side of the keyboard and it's probably because of lack of air circulation. It remains to be seen if the cooling system on the y50 is really any better or not.

Glad to hear we have some leaks on the UHD screens people have been waiting on!
Nope. I've had zero problem canceling or even returning a laptop to Lenovo before. Even if there was some issue trying to return one of them, I could always opt to sell one on Ebay (since there clearly is a market/demand). However I highly doubt two would ship within a day of each other, so the latter scenario is unlikely. -
Shoot. The NX500 now has me wondering if I should wait or go for the Y50. $2k is a lot, but for 100% NTSC and 108% Adobe RGB coverage... swoon. Dreamboat. Augh I don't want to go through this dang wait-game again, but at least there have been hands-on reviews already!

Damn that NX500 news muddling up my laptop selections and making it more confusing!
Only issue I see is that it may have a september release date but not sure if that is just for Germany as the new report mentions or for everyone. -
Word at Computex was late August but since it's Asus expect 1-3 months after that. I've been waiting for my Padfone for 2 years.
-
I was just wondering if there is anything about the Battery life for the Y50 yet?

Bit late, but for backlit keyboards:
Y50 has a backlit keyboard.
Y40 does not have a backlit keyboard. -
the keys can be hot because the CPU is right under where WASD is. regardless of how good engineering you have, with modern tech thinner=hotter, that's just how it is -
Yes, CPU and GPU location make a big difference. So do superior cooling fans, optimum flowpaths, better thermal compounds. Thickness is not always proportional to heat, it's just one variable of many.

Ok so the wifi card isn't as bad as I first thought.. It's on par with most laptops although I may replace it in the future whenever I have the chance.. I love the design of it.. Very slick.. The only problem is that I feel they could have lowered height and width just a little bit as the screen has a huge frame around it.. It almost feels like it's a 17.3 Laptop aside from the thickness.. Or maybe since I never had a 17.3, those things are huge? It fits pretty tight in my backpack..

Probably limited by the space for the internals, and they just made the frame width & height match. I've had a 17.3 before and I'll definitely say those can be enormous though. Good to hear about the wifi card, thanks for the update.

cAN SOMEONE PLZ TELL ME WHAT ABOUT WARRANTY WHEN Y50 IS OPENED? So i cant change hdd to an ssd?
-
first post for yelling yaaaaay.
what I read a bit ago is that your warranty is void when you swap the HDD but there isn't a sticker that needs to be removed to do so, so in theory, you can put put back the HDD if you need to send it back. -
The XPS 15 is a different class from the Toshiba P50t. The Dell is thin and light, the Toshiba is much bigger. They're aimed at different buyers.
That looks awesome, except for the lack of a number pad. I sure wish they weren't trying to copy Apple on that, because IMO, that's one of the biggest drawbacks of the MacBook Pro. -
Three quick questions for everyone:
1. When everyone talks about the page numbers, why do you all have your user settings to have so few posts on a page? Isn't that annoying to have to move to a new page so often? For me, the thread is currently on Page 86 because I have my settings at 50 posts per page. It's easy to change in your user settings.
2. Why does everyone have their Tapatalk spam signature turned on? Did you know you can turn that off and then you won't annoy the rest of the world with that extra unnecessary line of text?
3. I see several people putting xD at the end of sentences. What does that mean? -
well if it isn't a delight to answer your questions
totally agree with the first two
as for nr3: xD is a smily face sorta like this:

Let's see:
1) weight: 4.4lbs vs 5.2lbs
2) bulk (goes with the first point)
3) hybrid HDD instead of full SSD
4) warranty (especially if you go abroad)
5) GPU - I take 750m over 265x any time; if you have two comparably powerful GPUs Nvidia will come on top most of the time due to drivers
Mostly it's the portability thing. 4.4lbs is a lot as it is, and 5.2lbs without having something like 860m in y50 is not really justified (DVD drive - really?).
Just to note, I am a lot more excited about Asus NX500 - Hands-on with ASUS' Zenbook NX500: The MacBook Pro meets its match -> i7, 4k, 16gb ram, 850m, 4.85lbs, premium look, 8 hours battery life, reported superb speakers -
They might be but 850m is nowhere close to 870m - take 750m in XPS 15, it works fine - no throttle and that laptop is thin (and has i7 4702HQ - yes not 4700 or 4710, but still).
-
1. default setting; no, not annoying to me
2. default setting; yes, never cared enough to turn it off. I personally think you should go after the people with 6 lines explaining their gaming rig over us lamers who don't want to change all the default settings every time they flash a new rom on their phone. -
Has anyone actually got a Y50 Touch model yet?
-
Likely not until late this week/early next.

I wonder if I can get mine before this thread hit 500 pages. The ETA is June 13th

So I had initially ordered the y50 with i7-4710, 16GB, 860m 4GB and 512 GB SSD on May 15th, but being that the ship date is still over a month out (June 20th) and seeing that Klick online had just got the i7-4700, 16GB, 860m 4GB and 1TB Hybrid version in I decided to cancel my Lenovo Order and buy from Klick. First off props to Brian at Klick for his response and level of customer service .. literally responded within 1 minute of emailing him. Initially he said it would ship Thursday but to my surprise I guess they got them in early and I got a tracking number today! Super stoked to get this laptop. Granted it will not be quite as fast with the i7-4700 and Hybrid drive, however with the difference in price I think I definitely made the right choice. I may lose some speed there but I'll have double the storage at a substantial cost savings. Not to mention I should receive the laptop this week which to me, totally worth it.
Anyhow been following this thread since the start waiting to get my hands on this beast and hallelujah I can see the light! Big thanks to Brian at Klick and if you are considering placing an order through him you will not be disappointed.KlickOnline, itzleo94 and ChowMeow like this. -
Yea well it is not like I am going to run Watchdog at Ultra seting with everything maxed out on laptop anyway, I will leave that for the GTX Titan Black back home.
At least r9 m265x can run 4k 60M video smoothly, so I am happy. -
Did anyone from Canada get their estimated shipping date yet?
-
Meh I honestly think people overblow the portability thing. Honestly, my definition of portable is 6ish pounds, 1ish inches thick, give or take some on each. I guess this is not the case for everyone, but paying a good amount more just to lower the weight from 5 to 4 pounds, or from 1 inch to .8 inches, I honestly dont see the worth in it. Portability matters, but only to a certain extent. If the y50 4k screen turns out to be a good IPS or PLS screen at say 1800ish dollars for the maximum speced one, I really think it would be a far more economical choice than either the XPS 15 or the p50t, and, although we don't know the price yet, the new Asus zenbook as well (I'm assuming its going to be at least 2000 and likely more). But alas, to each their own. I suppose I am focused more on bang for buck while adhering to certain standards set. My personal ones are IPS, at least 500 GB ssd, 850m gddr5 at least, under 6 pounds and 1 inch thick. The y50 4k if it turns out to be pls will be the best option for this.

Anyone have experience replacing the monitors in Lenovo laptops with alternates? I'm curious if it would be possible to swap in a better panel. A good 15inch laptop panel isn't that expensive.
-
Exactly what im doing after all the hassle with lenovo, klick is the way to go
-
Lenovo is such a pain to deal with currently.
I just want to cancel my order and they keep giving me such vague answers about the cancellation.
Sweet lord, I just want to receive the cancellation email so I can finally order it from Klick. Lenovo's shipping dates are beyond horrid. -
there are only a few replaceable IPS panels on the market as far as I know. the installation process is also a complete pain in the a$$Banender likes this.
-
Do you mean the screws won't line up? I've done standard screen replacements without issue. Not too bad if you're comfortable around fragile, expensive things.
-
1. it's already a pain to take the screen out
2. it's not just screws, that's the lesser important part. sometimes they don't use the same connectors and you have change cables.
I'm fine with swapping hard drives, reapplying thermal paste and stuff, screen change is just not my thing, which I believe also applies to the majority of us here... -
I had to call twice until they finally sped up the process of cancellation so i could order from Klick
-
I contact once on Thursday, then Friday, then today. They send they cannot check on it because it's "released to manufacturing" so I have to just hopefully get the email ;-;. This also kept claiming that the optical drive is 100 percent internal in case anyone wanted to know.
-
Mine is coming in tomorrow. Unfortunately I have errands to run tomorrow and I'll be replacing the HDD as well so I dunno if I'll have time to come back and post impressions/pictures/whatever.
-
Check the y500 thread. There was a guy(forget his name but he had an Alienware picture) that had access to replacement screens for that model. He was getting matte screens for all those who didn't want glossy, which was the only option at the time.
Edit: his name was juliant

IMO I think it just depends on what you need the portability for. Someone's definition of portability maybe to just to take it from their house to a friends house easily, while there are people like me who will value that 1 extra less pound since I will be lugging it around my college campus on a shoulder bag for the next coming years. I don't know if you've ever had to carry a 6lb laptop in your bag lugging it around all day, but it isn't very pleasant. People have their own uses for portability so I don't think its justified to call them over exaggerators when they think a laptop is too heavy for them.227 likes this.

Looks like the UHD Y50 has some competition in Q4 to Q1 2015.
Asus NX500 Zenbook has 15.6inch 4K IPS Touch screen with GTX850m and weighs about 5.5 pounds(2.2kg). Probably worth $2000+ USD
Aorus X3 and X3+ has 13.3inch 3K and 4K IPS screen options with 6GB of GTX870m and Raid 0 hard drive config and weighs about 4 pounds(1.8kg). Probably worth $2000+ USD
AORUS Gaming Laptop X3 -
Isnt it 13.9 inch?

If you can, please test out the Y50 Touch screen. Since that's the biggest difference between the Touch model and the non-touch Y50, I'm curious to see if the screen is any better or worse, especially in terms of colors or viewing angles. I'm just waiting for confirmation have edge-to-edge glass. Any updates would be appreciated!Oranjoose likes this.

That would make it 14inch class laptop, on the site it says 13.3 in the specifications.
AORUS Gaming Laptop X3Earlcooo likes this. -
The x3+ has the 13.9 inch with a higher resolution.
-
There's a 13.3 X3 & a 13.9 X3 Plus Version. Pricing for them is unknown, but evidently this site was told "estimated street price of between $2,299 and $2,499 is not out of the question for the Aorus X3 Plus." ( Notebook Review X7/X3/X3 Plus). Seems like both the X3/X3 Plus & NX500 are probably in a different price category than the Y50, like the Razer. Also, if you're worried about Y50 temps, I wouldn't even want to see what the Aorus X3's will look like, especially if they're still using a Kepler card.
-
Yeah it will probably be very hot also I don't get why you need frickin 6GB of VRAM either >.> I guess those and the Razer Blade along with the MacBook Retina are in their own category.mattstermh likes this.
