On a side note, I have some technical noob questions.
1. Do you need to remove the battery first to replace the hard drive and RAM?
2. Will the Touch Screen have better quality compared to the non touch?
-
-
1. It's good policy to remove the battery whenever you work with the internal components. In the Y50's case, it doesn't look like the battery covers the screws for the hard drive, so just disconnecting it should be enough (and not necessarily physically removing it).
2. Disclaimer: Speaking in general here, I have no idea about the Y50. Glossy screens (which the touch version is) tend to have slightly worse viewing angles and will definitely have more vibrant, but less accurate, colors. Subjectively, I doubt you will notice a difference on the viewing angles & the vibrancy may be more important to you than color accuracy; in general, I would worry about neither and assume a similar, but more saturated, screen.
The big thing will just be the glare in bright light/sunlight, which will be present on touch but not on non-touch.
Edit: Oh, and fingerprints. Beware the fingerprints.

So I just found a few pics of the HK version of Y50 and we can confirm a few things
this is the FHD with 4GB VRAM AND Optical Drive
spec sheet
this is the optical drive and therefore we can be almost certain that it will be an external drive for the blu ray model. however this is only a DVD drive not a blu-ray, but since the dvd one is external, there's no reason for the blu-ray to not be. plus we all know there's no space inside
for those who are looking forward to an integrated optical drive, gg bro, not happening
AT LAST, WE CAN CONFIRM 100% THAT 4GB IS MAXWELL
on a side note this 860M has its clock speed locked at 1020Mhz, something that doesn't happen on US models, so no need to worry.
for those who are insisting the 4gb card is kepler, now it's time to wake up

I am SO glad that I waited. These two laptops alone have given me hope for end of summer (Q3) laptops. The Y50 looked very appealing at first, but it doesn't fulfill enough of my criteria as I had hoped.
-Screen isn't what I had hoped for it to be. The TN panel seems quite average, if not below average.
-Battery life. Initial estimates at about 5 hours, but given the hardware/only a 54 Wh battery, I would bet its less than 5.
-Its not small. Similar to the MSI GS60, the base of the computer is huge when compared to the screen size. This would be forgivable if the laptop had a great screen and/or battery life.
Given, the computer's specs for the price, the base model is a bargain, anything more and I feel the price/value drops off unless you get the fully loaded 512GB model, which the SDD alone would be worth the extra $300.
A quick note, the Asus NX500 has been priced at $1899  for the i7 w/ great screen (price was in a youtube video put out today, to lazy to find it lol). Rumors of lower speced/priced models have been thrown around, which I strongly believe Asus would do this as it widens the laptop's user base.
PS. The GTX 850m w/ GDDR5 is just a slower clocked GTX 860m, so in theory you could overclock it to similar/same performance.

Awesome post heibk! I knew the 4GB card would have to be Maxwell. Really happy I ordered the top model and decided to stick with it now. Can't wait till I get it!
The GX500 and especially the NX500 look really interesting too, but I wouldn't say they're really better than the Y50. Sure the screens are nicer, but the Y50 is a real bargain: I could never find the combination of processor, graphics card, and 512GB SSD it offers at the price I bought it at anywhere else. Also, it has a full keyboard with cool red backlighting and a numpad, whoch is pretty important on a 15.6", imo. It also looks nicer than the GX500, which is sure to hsve the idiotic RoG logo, and has a better graphics card than the NX500. All in all I am very imoressed with ASUS and if the NX500 was available right now I may have gotten it. But I definately won't regret my purchase of the Y50: the bang for my buck is just too good and the laptop is just too sexy to regret.BlazeHN likes this. -
Klick seems to have priced the base model at $1199+$10 shipping
Its kind of expensive for what the base model offers... am i seeing this wrong?
Coz otherwise i'd rather just put in the rest and go for the $1459 model with the 512gb ssd etc
Am i missing something? -
I don't think that is the price of the base model he gave you.
That could be the base touch screen one, as that is the only one he has in stock right now

Did you see that on Amazon? Email Brain regarding the price; they can give you a discount if you pay via paypal.
Agreed. It may not seem like much if you have a budget for that range, but $1800+ is almost twice what I paid for my base model. The Y50 is a really good bargain in my opinion. -
I just spoke to lenovo and they assured me that it will ship in 10 days max
do i trust them after all the mess that's happened? -

any idea if the Asus GX500 will have touch screen?
-
Just a thought:
Klick seems to be among the first retailers to get the Y50. Why not open one up and post some pics and reviews? With a video, your name gets out there to increase publicity, and we the viewers get our first look at at the laptops earlier since we don't have to wait for a customer to do their review a couple of days later.
On another note, even though the ASUS NX500/GX500 look to have sexier specs, it looks like it's going to be about ~175% of the cost of the Y50. I'd love to get a Y50 with better build quality, better screen, and more portability (I think?), the value of the Y50 seems hard to pass up... and for me it's unfortunately outside of my timeline of hoping to have a laptop by August.BlazeHN likes this. -
Should I get the Y50 or the Asus N550JK? I'm going to college so battery life and portability are pretty hefty factors. I know the y50 weighs about 0.7 pounds less than the N550JK but how's the battery life? I heard the N550JK can get up to 6 hours whereas some people are saying with the y50's battery 5 hours would be optimistic.

since it took lenovo half a year to deliver the laptops they announced at CES obviously new laptops are coming out from competitors by now
way to go with ASUS GX500 with better (PCI) storage, freaking 100% NTSC wide color gamut screen ZOMG, probably better cooling, still a 860m card, THINNER AND LIGHTER, AND coming out around the time lenovo's 4k y50's are coming out
granted, the y50's 4k laptops still might turn out to have around 100% NTSC wide color gamut as well? what do you think?
and how much better is PCI storage?
would be leaning toward the GX500 only thing stopping me is the flashy gamer design, but with all of the goodies listed above makes you think
anyway, happy that the laptops are going in the direction of decent screens after all the smartphones spoiled us -
All these options are making me happy but at the same time crazy lol.
I really want a gaming laptop but these other sexier looking ones are really tempting, but they're probably gonna be an ez 2k+ for these better spec laptops. -
If it is PCI-Express based M.2. SSD interface , then the speed will be twice faster than typical SATA SSD.
But the price is gonna be crazy too....Banender likes this. -
Has anyone ordered the 512 GB SSD model??
what is the approximate shipping time for the model??? -
On the lenovo site, says at least 3-4 weeks. But judging from how bad they can be don't expect them to be early.
-
The gx500 does look perfect I'll admit. However, in all likelihood the price will be on razor blade tier, I.e. 2200+, something that will not compete with the y50, if lenovo has any sense with their 4k version of course. Also, what exactly is the HK version? If there's a y50 out there with IPS and 7260ac, it would be the perfect laptop for me while staying within budget

Hello guys,
Another information from Hong Kong Biggest Electronic Retailer, (Fortress & Broadway)
They are selling the Y-50 with 3 variant, the i5,i7 and i7 with 4k display.
in this region, the Wireless Card is AC7260, with 4GB of GTX 860
View attachment 112821
I hope this information can help you predict the 4K version of the laptop in Europe and USA.
Notes: I am Indonesian, come to Hong Kong just for this laptop (just kidding). I had a vacation to Hong Kong while searching for some info of Y-50 availability. The Y50 just can be found at big retail electronic store, not the small one and the stock is very limited.BlazeHN, WhiteWuf and OfficerVajardian like this. -

Anyone has any info on what that "visualmaster" tech is that ASUS claims will provide 100% NTSC gamut? It sounds to me like it will be some emulation trickery rather than "real" colour space, but I'd like to know more.
This post relates to the topic of the Y50, as it's interesting to see where the Y50 stands compared to the competition, now that it's taken so long to get to market. I haven't pre-ordered anything, and waiting for professional reviews to come out for the Y50 and other similar machines before I make any decision.. I suspect I'm not the only one

So...everywhere is getting the 7260 except Canada and the US? What the crap? These all originate from the same place. Early adopters are getting screwed with leftover stock; bet me that the card is not bumped to 7260 universally after the leftover trash runs out...
Somebody here recommended a request for a special build from manufacturing. I emailed post-sales about it. Who knows. -
If this is accurate then we have the first "real-life" confirmation that the 4K screens will be IPS.
This will make so many people happy

Funny, that's the same optical drive I just ordered from Newegg a few days ago. It's actually an LG drive with a Lenovo logo slapped on it:

Just ordered mine in Canada. Lenovo Sales Canada will not customize the Y50 for the 7260 and no one I called could even find the part.

I think that with a bit of overclock, 850m could run near 860m, I THINK...but let's wait for someone with more infos about this argument.

Since my dad and I managed to take apart and fix my broken laptop screen without any problems, I actually feel like screen replacement isn't so bad. So for anyone unsure about the matte screen, know that you'll likely be able to upgrade it yourself in the future to a better gamut and/or IPS and/or 4K panel just by ordering the part normally used on other models of the Y50 or laptops with compatible 15.6" screens. It's sure to be a lot cheaper to do the replacement yourself than buying the 4K IPS model from Lenovo, and if you're patient you shouldn't really break anything. There's no fussing around with backing up drives and all that nonsense like you have to do for hard disk upgrades, so I would classify the two as roughly the same level of "pain". The stock matte screen is looking pretty decent and does have the advantage of no glare and reflections. But if I really decide I want the vibrancy of a glossy panel I think I may just buy a glossy 4K non-touch panel and install it myself (if they're not really available nowadays they should be available relatively soon with all the 4K laptops coming out). I really don't think touchscreen is worth it: current touchscreens are significantly more reflective than regular glossy panels, they make the screen feel further away, and using them is not worth having fingerprints all over your screen. Maybe they're fun to use once in a while, but if I were to upgrade my screen I wouldn't bother with them.

As if the 860m can't be overlocked too... Computers with the 850m are less powerful than computers with the 860m, period. Both cards can be overclocked to perform better, but with similar treatment the 860m should always significantly win out. That said, for my uses an 850m would suffice and I would be super, super tempted to wait for the Asus NX500 if only it had a better keyboard. The Lenovo Y50 destroys everyone else in that department: nicely curved keys, good feedback, and of course a full numpad. Lenovo is known for its great keyboards and its competitors like Dell, Asus, and even Razer seem to have made the really dumb choice to feature Macbook-like keyboards on their premium models. Which is a huge annoyance, especially when emulator or RPG gaming. Really, the most important things a computer needs are a really strong processor, a strong enough graphics card that can run the games one plays, a good enough screen, a very good keyboard, a good trackpad, a sexy design, and an affordable price. All those things considered, I think the Y50 still wins out over the competition, including these newly announced Asus laptops. In the case with the NX500, it is the keyboard that makes the biggest difference to me.

That last part is what I'm wondering. If the connector used in the Y50 for the non-4k is lower grade/not capable of pushing 4k bandwidth that would suck. I'm assuming it would be much cheaper to use a lower bandwidth connector for the 1080p laptops, and then put in a more capable one in the 4k models. Anyone know how to check what connector is being used on the Y50 1080p model (without touch, I assume touch is a different connector altogether), without taking the screen apart?
-
Why do people love the 7260AC so much ? I heard in the GS60 topic that this laptop has wifi problems although its card is 7260, I'm not sure about that.
-
I bought the base touch model today from Klick. I emailed Brian for a discount and got $175 off the price which is now $1,175 no tax and free shipping (Lenovo's site has it at $1300 with their automatic discount). Since I live 2hrs away from their retailer, I will have it within 2 days ^_^ Klick has been very responsive to emails and are a great place to buy from to those who have yet to buy theirs. Good luck to everyone.
Will be doing an extensive video review on the touch model and how to upgrade it. Stay tuned for more!KlickOnline, BlazeHN, WhiteWuf and 6 others like this. -
ya know I never thought they would give an $100 bluray drive anyways, probably found the cheapest they could get
1. there aren't any replaceable 4k screens on the market, the best you can find is FHD IPS which I don't even know if it's available in US
2. 4k model is glossy regardless of touch or non-touch
there are a lot more to look for in a laptop. besides performance you need to look at the build quality, cooling, motherboard design, battery life, portability etc. what type of transistor and inductor are being used, length/thickness of heat pipes, size/number of blades of fans, what kind of heatsink it has, size of heatsink etc.
specs aren't everything, or else MBP and MBA would've been out of business a long time ago.
on the other hand, good thing you brought up OC.
if you can OC 850M, what makes you think you can't OC too?
there's another thread in our forum shows that OCing +135Mhz and vram +400Mhz makes an 860M close to a 870M.
so guys, stop bringing up the overclock bullsh!t, it's pointless.
860M is better than 850M regardless
remember, your laptop is only designed to handle enough heat from your stock card and only that, or maybe not even for things like HP dv6. if you push up voltage a little too high, you know what's gonna happen. -
Not necessarily true... the only difference between the 860m Maxwell and the 850M is the clockspeed. It's possible, though highly unlikely, that NVIDIA cherry picks the best performing silicon for the 860M. It's much more likely that the silicon is identical and simply sold at different levels for market segmentation purposes. With a bios flash, the 850M and 860M should perform identically.
-
I should be receiving mine today... planning on getting it running for video editing, hopefully I'll be able to do a test run tomorrow and see how the battery holds up under higher levels of stress.liteon6x likes this.
