Base model. Ordered on the 23rd, I was impressed with the shipping speed since it was right before a holiday weekend and I live on the opposite coast!
-
I love hearing people talk about how quiet this laptop is. A quiet, portable gaming laptop has been so hard to find I was starting to think it didn't exist.
-
That's what I mean, lol. If I cancel my order and buy a different model at this point I would be even more screwed regarding delivery (like you guys). XD
My online tracking updated last week to say June 19th Estimated Shipping Date and June 26th Estimated Delivery Date. And when I contacted Lenovo by email after that, the rep said my Shipping Date is June 18th.
But I was maybe the first person in Canada to purchase one from the Lenovo Canada website (I ordered within 2 hours of it appearing online) so I wasn't hit by the backlog that badly. Who knows when the rest of you will even get Estimated Shipping Dates. XD -
Just curious, for those of you who had ordered the $1249 model with the Blu-ray drive, did you receive a cancellation email now that it's not on the website? Will that model not be available after all? Thanks! (Oh Lenovo... lol.)
-
Man...I really wish I had ordered the Glossy Touchscreen model now...A bad screen would suck and would make any game running at apparently "Ultra" settings still really ugly. I really don't want to cancel my order though...At that point I might as well wait for the 4K Y50 since nobody else in Canada even has an Estimated Shipping Date yet and I would be bumped back to the end of the list...
I want to see more footage of the Anti-Glare screen! Can someone please put up the same image on the Y50 and on their older laptop and take a photo showing both side by side? Preferably a few different images showcasing different colours and also one with the Start Tile Menu. It would make the decision a lot easier for a lot of us.
Anyone think I can contact Lenovo directly and have them switch my model directly at Manufacturing without altering my promised delivery date? I'm kind of skeptical it'll work, but it would pretty awesome if it did... -
I ordered that version, and contacted a Lenovo rep as soon as I saw that the model had been taken down. The rep told me that it should not affect my order (which I placed on the 23rd), but that they would contact me if something happened and I had to cancel. Well, they've not contacted me yet.
My estimated shipping date is the 17th. I'm going to be slightly nervous until then, though, because I'll be wondering whether they're going to cancel it.
About the internal vs. external DVD drive: several sales representatives have told me that it is internal, and several have told me that it is external. Based on the interior photos of the Y50 I'm assuming it's external. However, all the reps agree that it can read and write Blu-ray, which will be really nice. -
Word of note to those of you who ordered models with the 4710HQ processor. I ordered the baseline 4710 model on May 15th with expected shipping on the May 29th. Last Friday (5/30), my ship date was pushed back to June 29th. So, I placed an order for the baseline 4700 model, just to see if it would somehow ship first. Well the results are in... the 4700 shipped today. The 4710 model is still scheduled for the end of June, which means I get to cancel it in a bit (yay).
Basically, if you ordered a 4710 version, Lenovo is having some serious trouble either integrating them into their laptops or has practically zero inventory of the processor. I would have advised canceling your order and placing one for a 4700 model, but they did just up the price on all of those versions this week, unfortunately. -
I'm preparing for a video review. I have a full script and everything, I just time to record and upload it. Probably will be uploaded Saturday.
-
Did you get it already?
-
Well if the screen comments are to be believed its better to go with the glossy one. If you just ordered yesterday try contacting support to see if you can switch the order without altering ur delivery date by much.
-
No i just speculated the reason why the G550JK seems to be pulled from most places and OOS.

GUYS! take a look:

The prices have changed and there is a gtx 880 version??! does anybody knows about this? is that gtx 880 a typo (i hope not

Will I pay the new price or still only be charged the original price? I wouldn't be very happy with a $300 increase...
-
It's impossible let me say Impossible...... Did I mention impossible? For this laptop to house that GPU without turning into a barbecue grill. -
If you've already ordered then you'd be charged the price on your receipt. The only real difference is they removed the baseline 4700 model. My guess is they already have enough orders to exhaust their stock of the older processor.
-
True... but what happened to the optical drive version? there was a perfect pick (at least for me) with 8gb ram, 4gb vram and optical drive.
Is it still available? If not, guess i´ll wait for the asus g550jk -
How about the Asus Q550LF? It has an i7-4500u (dual core :/) CPU, but it also has an Nvidia GT 745m and 8gb of ram. Considering you don't play games, the GPU should suffice. However, the biggest selling point, considering its price, is the gorgeous 1080p IPS screen! I recommend buying a refurbished model from Newegg, but you can see it in person before you buy if you live near an Amazon.com showroom (aka Best Buy). They have it on display.

Wow so much ripping on Asus' keyboard of all things? I honestly don't see the big deal around it. Looks fine to me. As long as there isn't flex and the keys feel good while typing, I couldn't care less what it looks like. I understand the aesthetics being personal preference, but for me I don't mind how it looks at all, including the wasd red glow.
Like I said, it's all personal preference. Don't like the ROG, theme? Its a GAMING laptop. Also, a blu ray drive IS a handy thing to have, compensating for the slightly thicker and heavier build.
The y50 has 2 big potential problems for me right now
-Potential low quality 4k TN screen
- ac 3160
If the 4k screen is TN, you can bet that I won't be giving this laptop a second look. The 3160 is also another thing that lenovo just decided to tick people off with, especially considering other models in other places have the 7260. In addition, even if the 4k panel is PLS, the Asus g551 will still very likely have a better quality IPS screen, perhaps a bit worse than the 100% NTSC panel of the GX500.
So some of you will like the y50 better due to aesthetics and weight. For me and others out there? Ill take on the extra 1 pound in order to stare at a higher quality screen for hours and potentially have twice the WiFi speed. Looks, again are completely subjective. Also, looking at it seems that the G551 is made of more aluminum than the y50, which is half plastic from what ive heard.
This is all assuming that the G551 is comparable in pricing compared to the y50.
In addition, the N551 is the non ROG version of the G551, for those ripping the G551 purely for looks, although that model likely has the worse 850m.

Has anyone done a 3Dmark firestrike benchmark yet? If so could you post the results? Thanks.

Just a heads up, I ordered the base model y50 touch Monday night from Lenovo and it just shipped. Expected delivery is June 10th. Fair shipping speed, more so than what I expected from reading this thread. Model #59420895.

This also something I wanted to know. Reading through and following this thread now makes me feel like I have never gotten the most out of whatever computer I have had, like removing the bloatware and re-installing the questionable drivers. I always feel like there is something that I can do more of or that I forgot to do when I first get a new computer. If someone could help me out immensely and provide a list of things to do once you get your y50 to maximize its potential. Like if I should use this windows refresh, fix the audio jack driver, fix the blurry large text, and so on. Thanks.BlazeHN and SensualLettuce like this.

im in the same boat, just bought the 16gb ram version from klick and a new crucial m550 512gb, anyone have a link or recomendations on how to do a fresh instal or if not a fresh install, a list of bloatware to remove and get the os cleaned/setup before installing the ssd.KlickOnline, ScubaAddict, hadl5184 and 2 others like this.

Microsoft made it even easier with Windows 8. It is one of the great improvements they made in the OS. Here is a link with instructions:
How to refresh, reset, or restore your PC - Windows Help
I typically do a full reset. Now, since this is mostly integrated it is really easy. With Windows 7 you have to have all of the media and reinstall the OS. This gets a bit tricky sometimes with OEM keys and the like, but there are ways around that. Windows 8 just follow the step by step instructions. You can probably also do a refresh and get rid of the crap too, I don't know what that does to the drivers though.
Once that is done, I typically install Avast and CCleaner. If you don't care for Avast (I don't always use it), I just use the integrated Windows security software. It is actually quite good. Ccleaner is great just for cleaning up your programs and registry, etc.
Once that is done, I install the necessary Lenovo drivers. Typically, there aren't many I'm interested in. Bluetooth maybe, sometimes audio (though the Windows ones are usually fine) and definitely the TouchPad drivers. Hopefully they use Synaptics drivers, I'm not really sure. I find those to be the best touchpad drivers though. Afterwards, depending on my wireless performance, I will occasionally grab the manufacturers wireless card driver - windows typically has a pretty good driver that they automatically grab though. I have found the windows driver to be much better than any of the ones from Lenovo, ever. Finally, graphics card drivers straight from AMD/Nvidia. After that, you're pretty much good to go. I then go and install everything else I might want, like Microsoft Office, VLC, so on and so forth. -
despite my need for a laptop ASAP, I think I might put up with a wait for an ASUS laptop with 100% NTSC and Adobe RGB color coverage since I do more photo editing than gaming.
-
By the looks of it on the Lenovo website it seems that the 880m is indeed not a typo.. but I could be wrong.
-
you mean it is a typo? I'll bet you $1000 that lenovo's not gonna put an 880m in the y50

Seems like I'm the first to get the Touch model
Klick is the best! I got mine delivered the day after I ordered and the total price was $1175. I got free shipping and no tax.
Here are some BIG pictures. I got the Base Touch Model with 2GB GTX860m, Core i7 4700HQ, 8GB RAM, and 1TB+16GBSSD. Will be doing a video this weekend!

Hows the color/viewing angles on the glossy screen?

Has anyone received a model with the 4GB 860m and confirmed that it is Maxwell?

Im a newb but does the extra 2gb do anything performance wise?
-
Thanks for the pics. I'm a little confused about your issue with the glossy bezel vs. edge-to-edge glass, though. It looks to me like you've still got a glossy bezel. The only difference is that yours is under a layer of glass whereas on the matte screens, that layer of glass isn't there. What's the advantage to the edge-to-edge glass if you've still got a giant, glossy bezel underneath the glass?
-
How is the screen?
Any better than the matte(pics posted a few pages earlier)

Yeah, bro, that's the point!

In all honesty, I don't see much of a difference from the Y50 screen and my old Lenovo Y500. They seem to have almost the same panel. Horizontal viewing angles is average and vertical viewing angles are below average. JBL Speakers are crisp and clear even on full blast. One of the best speakers I've heard from a laptop. I would say its below the Asus N550JK's speakers though.
-
There's always a glossy bezel for non touch models and rarely is it just one flat panel. This touch model is one large panel so the whole thing is flat without a bulging plastic glossy bezel rim around the screen.
-
It gives the laptop a more premium look and makes swiping easier, just
imagine swiping and keep hitting that huge border. It wouldn't make the experience consistent -
Thanks.
Well, it depends on what you're doing. As a 3D animator I'll be using this card for GPU rendering in Blender. As such, I'd like to have as much VRAM available as possible (it will also be helpful for video editing). But whether it'd give a performance difference in gaming, I'm not actually sure. I'm not really a PC gamer. -

Pricing will be decided early next week. But we'll be under Lenovo's price.WhiteWuf likes this. -
I understand why it would be desirable from a usability standpoint. I just don't understand the interest from an aesthetic standpoint, since the glossy bezel is there either way. When people were talking about wanting the edge-to-edge glass instead of the glossy bezel, I was thinking that the screen would go nearly to the edge of the lid rather than having the wide bezel. If that were the case, then I could see why people would be interested.bva91 likes this.

I seem to have a GPU Driver issue. I'm unable to update to the 337.78 nvidia drivers from the 332.50. Is this a Nvidia problem or is there something wrong with my Y50?

Everyone has this issue - been discussed on the thread .. I don't think anyone has tried a workaround yet ..
