Do you know how long it would take for shipping/delivery to Canada? More specifically Edmonton, AB?
-
there is a way to work around it but it's sort of complicated, I may be able to explain to people if I have time. the main problem is lenovo not nvidia

Being that we don't know exactly when they will be here, really can't say. But from the time it ships - usually about 10-12 days .. it all depends on how fast it clears customs.

So is this something that can be fixed by Lenovo or will we have to work around it?
Or would you have to wait for a newer driver, or just stick with an older one? -
Someone please compare the touch screen display to the non touch display already.
-
A trick that would most probably work is by editing the inf file of the driver.
You have to add the vendor and product id of the gtx860m in the laptop to it using notepad.
Search on google ,you'll get a better idea

Okay well I get mine tomorrow, so I will be doing some googling then and hopefully by then maybe heibk201 can explain more in depth, if he has the time.
-
Alright thank you
I guess I'll stick with my June 26th delivery estimated date for now
-
Kind of hard to do from a consumer stand point. The only way would be if you owned both of them or knew someone who had gotten a hold of the version you didn't have.
-
i opened up the issue few pages back. had a chat with a rep confirming if they really have that model, she said that it is just a website error cause they're currently updating the page.
-
I've been having this issue with my laptop where everything will just freeze for a second or two, and then resume.
I feel like it has to do with the speed of the HD. I thought it was just in CS when I had this issue but it actually happens when browsing the internet too. Really frustrating. -
Nice!! Would you mind sharing where you bought it from at that awesome price? I'm looking into getting one.
-
That's weird....what makes you think it's the drive? Do other owners with lenovo laptops and similar drives report the same issue. Please let it be just you!
-
It looks beautiful. I'm buying that particular model tomorrow. Could you do me a favor by telling me if you see any light bleed on the display on a solid black background?
-
Err... I am also very curious about this potential issue. Anyone else experiencing this? :/
-
Open up the task manger and continue what your doing. When it freezes again, see if there is a process causing it. Usually a 1-2 second hang is due to a process in windows acting up.
-
I know there is some praise for the Y50 keyboard, but I'll say it is a bit thin.. still very nice but takes some getting used to.. I guess that is due to the slim form factor and that being the only way it closes properly..
-
Is the touch display also a TN screen? Hopefully it gets the IPS treatment for those of us who don't mind the 1080p screen.
-
Hey I got my 4710 standard y50 yesterday but I can't find a way to update the nvidia drivers. Anyone find a solution for this?
-
Wow first person to get the i7 4710HQ?
-
sudden periodic freezes are usually due to wallpaper change. try disabling it.

Thin? Could you please elaborate on that?
Does the body or screen flex? How sturdy are the hinges? -
Lots of y50 models on Canadian lenovo website have disappeared. Does lenovo in Canada don't sell those models anymore?
-
No the frame and everything is hella sturdy.. Hell you could probably use the laptop on a construction site.. I am saying the depth the keys are thin though.. They keys are very thin, much more than the y510 that I tried out at microcenter..

The screen is really not that bad (from the video at least).
I don't understand all the hate against it...

I noticed in the comments you mentioned that it gets warm. How warm? Have you gamed on it yet?
-
I just found the video on YouTube. I referenced Jason Leem because it was his video. Sorry about that
-
It's okay, sweet pea.
-
The video doesnt show the viewing angles. (To me at least, viewing angles are important) According to people here and photos, its pretty crappy.
-
Where did you order from?

You have to send an email to Brian to get a quote and let him know you're a NotebookReview.com forum member and they'll likely have a bit of a discount for you. But you have to order directly from them and not go through Amazon or eBay, otherwise they have to pay fees to those sites and then they can't offer you a discount.
-
Wow. That really doesn't look good. I was really looking to get this laptop but that may be a deal breaker. How big is the "sweet spot", the area you can look at the screen and have it look good? How much did you tilt it between pictures? Thanks!
-
This is only the vertical angle tilted backwards.... (the y50 display is really poor at this angle... So are most tn panels..)
The horizontal viewing angles seem to be good... The thread has lots of images.... Would be better to check all those and not just the worst comparison before you take a call

First of all, I can't find N551 anywhere, just the G551. Did you just assume it exists or will exist in the future?
I am also torn between ASUS and Lenovo, but both have things I like/dislike unfortunately. Think I'm going to start my own company and call it LenSUS and start producing proper laptops. No I'm not, but if I did here is how it will look like:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. at least 1080p decent ips non-touch 15" display
2. not too flashy gamer looks
3. at least 850m gddr5
4. good speakers
5. obviously no defects like not properly working cooling/wifi/whatnot
There isn't a single laptop out there that covers at least all of these minimum requirements. Either it's not ips (y50) or it's ips and has flashy design (GX500) or it's ips touch (NX500) or it has defects (XPS 15) or worse: it's a combination of a few factors like being touch plus crappy speakers plus gddr3 (N550JK).
Closest one checking all the boxes is the ASUS NX500 considering ips is more important than weather it's a touchscreen or not. So here my compromise: I would have to have that touchscreen (more weight, useless feature I won't need but have to pay for).
Other runner-up would be y50 4k considering it will have a decent ips panel.
Am I missing out on an existing laptop or am I just being too picky? -
nope
GS60 Wifi issues on some models, runs hot and noisy
RB 14 not 15, runs hot and noisy
Considering that Y50 costs like half the price of competing laptops i would buy it +200$ ips screen for home use then sell the laptop early 2015 for a broadwell cpu/maxwell gpu laptop
it's simply the tech is not there yet, laptops like RB or GS60 would improve a ton if they were using maxwell gpu/broadwell cpu, we are almost there, dropping 2K for a laptop that you almost can't touch while gaming and noisy as hell is not cool in my book
Only reason Y50 is not so noisy duo the fact its gpu is maxwell and it's not as thin as other laptops, while the GPU is running cool, the cpu gets very hotBanender likes this. -
yeah that's what i was thinking also but it's not confirmed yet if the 4k y50 will have ips, and even if it does there is some chance that it will be a crappy ips screen
so guess it's: wait-and-see, buy-and-sell -
A German article on notebookcheck.com mentions it but doesn't really say anything else about it. If it exists, it certainly falls in line with previous generations and the model numbering scheme. It's probably a 1.1 inch version of the NX500 with either a nice panel and standard sound or a standard panel with nice sound. Probably a N550JK slightly tweaked. It's probably not interesting enough to make anyone's article.

I recieved a updated ship date from Lenovo on the touch 4710 16gb. It went from an estimated ship date of 6-30 to 6-19.

Anyone able to do a 3dmark benchmark yet?

i was in the same position looking at everything you want, the sager 7358 (clevo w350ss) is the best fit for this(notebookreview just did a review on the eurocomm version 'shark 3'). i ended up buying the y50 because xotic pc doesnt accept paypal/credit card from international address. and seeing the new asus i dont care 1 bit about 4k screens, its just a gimmick, and didnt feel like waiting 3+ months for another computer

Has anyone else ordered the Y50 that included the optical drive (model # 59421847)? (for reference, it had a i7 4710HQ processor, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860m 4GB) From what I've seen on this thread it appears it wasn't a very popular option. If someone receives a model with the optical drive I'd be interested to see what the external drive is like.
(Also, side note, Lenovo fixed their Y50 selection up a bit. Now it's fairly similar to how it was before, except that it lacks the model with the optical drive) -
like I said, if you dig 50 pages back you'll find out, I've posted about all of the things you were talking about, you just have to keep digging
-
Well, I've actually been following this thread for a while before I posted (since about the 350's), but I hadn't seen anyone receive one of these specific models (maybe I just missed it). I do recall that someone (you, I guess) posted a photo of a Lenovo external drive that was actually just a rebranding of an LG one, but was that the drive that came with the laptop? While the reps disagree on some things, they all agree that the drive can indeed read and write Blu-ray, which the normal Lenovo one apparently couldn't.
So have you received one of the models I mentioned, then? -
1. that is the dvd drive and the blu ray drive will be a similar drive, the point is that it's just gonna be another external drive
2. no but others did -
Ah, yes, I see what you're saying. I was actually more curious about the quality of the drive, so that's why I asked. I'm actually currently talking to a sales representative and she says that the reason they removed this model from the store was that they realized it was an external drive (as opposed to the advertised internal drive).
Ah, interesting. I shall have to go find those posts, as I must have missed them. Thanks. -
quality wise, I don't think there's any problem with external drives these days. the bad ones are eliminated by competition already
